Weapons for Peace - Version 1.0.......2001-10-19
Upon first listen, I got the impression that these guys are not screwing around. Jimmy's banging style of drumming is reminiscent of the John Bonham school, but still has lots of dynamics and extended fills. As for the two-guitar line-up, Jason's "tricky stuff" (with lots of cool effects) layers perfectly with Phil's gutteral, raunchy riffs, and when they play riffs in unison, it creates a definite wall of sound. Rick's vocals are mostly sung (rather than screamed), and are full of the angst and joy that make rock music what it is. Tony T's bass supplies the rumbly, thick rock foundation upon which the structure is built.
All four songs on Version 1.0 are pretty much straight-ahead rock tunes, but each one has its own twist. The lead-off cut, "You Said", is a no-nonsense 4/4 jam with lots of grand pauses and rhythm guitar cadenzas. The last tune, "Paradise", starts with a 4/4 intro and switches to triplet feel for the verse, goes back to 4/4 for the chorus, and the bridge before the last chorus features some killer extended drum fills. The middle two tunes, "Don't ever" and "Tendencies of Me" are triplet feel songs with thick guitars that build and release dynamically throughout. "Don't Ever" has some nicely placed vocal filters, and tasty guitar work that all leads up to the full-on chorus. "Tendencies of Me" lets Rick's crystal clear vocals cut right through, and features a quiet, spooky bridge that brings everything down for the final wallop.
I have seen these guys live, and if you get a chance to see them, take it. You will be witness to a finely-tuned, all-business show that is hard to find at a club-type venue.
