4 out of 5 stars Nice listening.......2007-06-27

This was special music from a special time in music history. My whole family litened to it.

5 out of 5 stars A BLAST FROM THE PAST !!!.......2007-05-23

Flappers, Vamps and Sweet Young Things offers twenty marvelous tracks that give us great insight into just how much women enjoyed their new found romantic freedom during the jazz era of the 1920s. These recordings may have surface noise but they remain enjoyable to this day and this is one CD you'll listen to over and over again. Just one listen proves it all!

The CD opens with the upbeat number entitled "I'm Gonna Meet My Sweetie Now;" Jane Green performs this with all her might and the musical arrangement remains timeless to this day. Jane's voice is rich, warm and vibrant--awesome! The CD then makes a complete about face for the next track entitled "Am I Blue?" performed by Libby Holman. Libby sings of a lonely woman who wants a new romance in her life now that her man has suddenly left her. Libby Holman delivers this with panache and sophistication, too.

Other gems on this CD include the then extremely popular Helen Kane singing "Dangerous Nan McGrew;" this number is about a woman who makes her own rules and enjoys men strictly on her terms. "Maybe, Who Knows" features a young Kate Smith singing magnificently about her life after her man has left her; and Mildred Hunt delivers the classic "Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone." "Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone" lets Mildred Hunt sing of how she doesn't want to be bad mouthed now that her romance with her man is finally over. Mildred also sings the opening verse before the chorus of the song which is something you don't always hear; this enhances the beauty of the number.

Sophie Tucker belts out advice with "If Your Kisses Can't Hold The Man You Love;" this number lets Sophie tell women to go out and make the best of things with a new romance if their man leaves them. She even encourages them to cheat on their men if they discover that their man is unfaithful! The bold advice represents the new freedom women experienced during the 1920s jazz age. The Brox Sisters also perform a number about a "Red Hot Mama" who enjoys her life and makes her own decisions about her romances with men.

This concept album wraps up nicely with "Ya Gotta Know How To Love" performed by Esther Walker. Esther sings of a woman taking control of a romance. This was a bold, revolutionary theme for the 1920's; but women enjoyed their new found freedom and there was no looking back once women discovered the joys of power.

The liner notes tell us the difference between ladies who were "Flappers," "Vamps" or "Sweet Young Things;" there is some discussion of the type of lady who was a "Red Hot Mama" too. The liner notes give you all the song credits and recording dates along with an essay about the female singers on this CD and how the lyrics to these songs celebrate the exuberance of the 1920s. The art work is excellent, too.

I highly recommend this CD for fans of early jazz and female singers from the 1920s; and people who want to get acquainted with these fine songbirds would do well to use this CD as a starting point.

Let's hear it for the roaring `20s!!! Great job, everyone!!!

4 out of 5 stars Some roaring '20's some boring '20's.......2007-02-10

Like most compilations there are some great songs, some good songs and some stinkers but over all it is a fun CD. The songs cross the spectrum from women in love in the infectious "I'm gonna meet my sweetie now" to the heart broken "Moanin' low" with a strong dose of get over it in Sophie Tucker's "If your kisses can't hold the man you love" You can almost taste the bath tub gin while listing to Red Hot Henry Brown. I gave it an extra star for having both Helen Kane & Annette Hanshaw.

3 out of 5 stars '20s Girl singers .......2007-02-09

What were once called "girl singers" are featured on FLAPPERS, VAMPS AND SWEET YOUNG THINGS. The 20 songs span the years 1924 to 1931, with only three being from the pre-electric recording era. Condition of source material is spotty, which is to be expected with antique 78s. Fine print-sized liner notes comment on all tracks.

This collection gets a middling rating for a persistent usage of lesser-known songs and B sides. Many of these ladies had far more entertaining records. Recommended mainly for completists. (3½ stars)

5 out of 5 stars HOORAY FRO THE BROX SISTERS!!!.......2007-01-28

I am a fan of the Brox Sisters, and I was so happy to find a CD with them singing on it! They are so spooky! In their movies they always come out dressed like a three-headed monster! They have great voices and they were really popular in the 1920s. They were the first poular sister team, I think. They came before the Boswells. Hooray for Bobbe, Patricia, and Lorriane Brox! There are also some nice clear recordings of great artists like Annette Hanshaw, Ruth Etting, Sophie Tucker, Blossom Seeley, and others. Once again, HOORAY FOR THE BROX SISTERS!!!

4 out of 5 stars Living Things Live.......2006-05-17

On hearing Matthew would be playing in Toronto, I ran out and bought a copy of "Living Things". I was disappointed to the point where I thought I would skip his live show. Luckily my wife insisted we go. Matthew looked a mess. The band was 3 guitars, a bass, and drum. The volume and the feedback were way up and they burnt through blistering renditions of almost all of "Living Things" plus his other big hits. From that moment on I have loved "Living Things". So if you find "Living Things" disappointing you need to just catch Matthew playing it live. It will rock for you after that.

2 out of 5 stars Very disappointing to say the least.......2006-01-31

I am a huge Matthew Sweet fan, but this album doesn't make the grade. The music just feels lifeless and there isn't one song on here that caught me with the usual Matthew Sweet "hooks". I have seen Matthew play several times, I own every stitch of material he has ever released and consider him a "pop" music genius, but I seriously doubt this one will ever make it to the CD player drawer again.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not his best.......2005-09-10

I've been a fan of Sweet even before the Girlfriend album (which I still think is his best), and this one has some fantastic songs on it, but overall, I still don't think it ranks up there among his best. Even the last one, Kimi-Ga-Suki is better. Still worth buying, but not essential unless you're a longtime fan like me.

2 out of 5 stars "Living Things" feels "lifeless".......2005-06-15

Living Things is very disappointing. The previous CD, Kimi Ga Suki Raifu, was such a powerful collection of songs, written and recorded with such clarity and immediacy, a rock classic that is truly one of his best efforts alongside Girlfriend. Living Things is touted as Sweet's return to a fully produced, thought-out album. It even has Van Dyke Parks...so it must be a slice of Wilson-esque classic pop, like In Reverse...right? There's only one problem: the songs. Living Things rings very hollow musically, and lyrically it is hopelessly bleak, the actual opposite feeling of the album's title. This is not a sunny pop album, it is a dark series of resignations on the hopelessness of life, with almost none of Sweet's humor to balance out the darkness. It just feels like a bad head trip. I have listened intently to this disc, in various settings and states of mind, and have come up short every time. The material is lacking a heart, a center of gravity. Yes, it has all the external elements of Sweet's pop sheen: the overlaid vocals, the guitar textures, the power pop grooves. On the surface, it all sounds attractive, but underneath all the layers is empty, bleak music. It feels like "Matthew Sweet by the numbers."

Moreover, Living Things is supposed to be a more "produced" album than Kimi Ga Suki, and yet it feels sloppy and unrehearsed. Only a couple of the songs have a proper "ending" or even a fade-out. Most of the tracks sound like demos, with haphazard sloppy endings where the music abruptly cuts off as if the band were only rehearsing the song and decided to quit before the end. This is not a well produced album, to be honest it sounds unprofessional. And the fact that there is no booklet, no lyrics, also shows that Matthew wanted to put this CD out "on the cheap," which shows some disregard for his fans, in my opinion. Girlfriend, Altered Beast, 100% Fun, In Reverse, all of these discs have always had some form of lyric booklet. Even with Kimi Ga Suki Raifu, there was a booklet with liner notes by Matthew, a sense of personal involvement. But on Living Things, nothing. Just the tracklist and personnel. I detect a disinterest on Sweet's part, a lack of concern for our reaction to the sloppy song endings, the redundant material, or the lack of any liner notes or lyrics. Matthew seems essentially absent from the whole operation, from the packaging to the songs.

One reviewer compared this album to Altered Beast, which also had a more densely layered production style, a more "experimental" album than, say, Girlfriend. But at least Altered Beast still had a very high calibre of songs: Dinosaur Act, Ugly Truth, Time Capsule, Life Without You, Reaching Out, Falling. There is nothing on Living Things that stands out as a memorable song in the end. It all sounds like a series of hooks and textures that don't go anywhere. Another example of a more "produced" Sweet album is 1999's In Reverse, which has the Spector/Wilson "Wall of Sound" production on some tracks, but again, it works well because Sweet wrote a solid collection of SONGS for that album. Hide, Split Personality, I Should Never Have Let You Know, Write Your Own Song. These are all true gems in Sweet's catalog. And once again, Living Things fails to produce even ONE song that rises above the surface exterior in order to make a lasting impression. Really, I cannot think of even one song that stands on its own merits. "You're Not Sorry" and "I Saw Red" are probably the "best" tracks, but even those songs only sound like hollow imitations of much stronger material by Sweet on previous albums. He's covered all of this ground before, with much better results. For an album called "Living Things," it all sounds lifeless, a collection of dead shells. Attractive containers with nothing inside.

3 out of 5 stars Not the Matthew Sweet I expected.......2005-05-09

When I received Living Things, I thought I was going to hear more songs similar to Kimi Ga Suki which I bought for like $30 as an import as it was only released in Japan. Yes I took a chance but turns out, Kimi was a great album even if he produced it in his basement. It has since been released in the US.

Well, Living Things is definitely nothing like Kimi Ga Suki. He seems like he's rambling through a lot of the songs. The hooks that Matthew is so known for just get buried in his non-rhyming, melody-less lyrics this time around. I've only listened to it once so far and my first impression is not too good. Maybe it will grow on me but one listen to Kimi and I knew it was a great album. Living Things is too quirky and a little more "out there" than his usual songs. Maybe it's like other people are saying - that this is "experimental". I'd say it's his worst album since Earth and that was before Girlfriend. Girlfriend was the album where Matthew found his "sound". Well, over ten years of good music isn't bad I guess. I will still get his next album but hopefully it will be closer to his tried and true power pop style and not experimental.

first time i heard about the living things was on mtv2 brand spanking new music week and i first caught a glimpse of an band that would make an big impact on the way i percieve music
they had the edge of the stooges and the glam pop rock of T.REX
there single BOM BOM BOM being one of the catchiest singles this year no doubt,
but it's one of the best on the album..along with
"bombs below" "i owe" "god made hate"

the living things fuse together social/political/religous commentry, without preaching and i've long for a new band apart from the pop greenday's american idiot
to make an standing impression in the way they form their lyrics and this band have done both fused together ferocious glam punk rock and political lyrics too truly cermented an classic album and a band that will be spoken about for generations too come

classic artwork, reminds me of tyrannosaurus rex album
"my people were fair now their content to wear stars on their brows"

it's here and it could be the album of the year,

5 out of 5 stars This band could save rock n roll!!.......2006-05-12

This CD is brilliant. Live this band is even better. Take 69 Stones and slam then into Bush America and you have the cockiest protestors to ever turn it up to 11. The labum is pure salvation. You can't stop cranking it. Why aren't they huge????

3 out of 5 stars On the song "Bom, Bom, Bom".......2006-03-28

I Love this song. We need that sound come back! Bom,Bom,Bom has a T rex feel to it.Love It!!

4 out of 5 stars As close to perfect as you get..........2006-01-26

It's hard to imagine any danger being inserted back into today's sterile rock scene. Sure, there are tons of great artists out there but nothing that gets played on the radio. Do you honestly expect so-called alternative rock stations to play anything other then bland nu-metal acts that came along five years too late? If you answered yes, promptly slap yourself. And this album won't change that. It should but it won't while A&R reps are still soliciting radio stations for airplay.

That's not to speak against the quality of the Living Things as a band. In fact, they're quite talented. And they prove that on their album, Ahead of the Lions.

Beginning with "Bombs Below", the Things systematically assault the listener with a potent mix of punk, metal, and politics. From there it continues song-by-song, the band crafting their own brand of anarchy ranging from the AC/DC-gets-into-a-scuffle-with-the-Ramones anthem of "Bom Bom Bom" to the throat-shredding "On All Fours". It reaches a pinnacle with "March In Daylight", which utilizes one of the best recent hard rock riffs this side of H.I.M.'s "Wings of a Butterfly". Oddly enough, one of the oddities among the assorted chaos is "Mosters of Man". The song itself still maintains the hard-charging emotion of most of the former but it includes horns and distortion, causing it to sound like vintage Love & Rockets. That isn't an insult, either. It just stands out.

Unfortunately, for all the exciting music there is to be found, the album isn't perfect. The band stumbles when it tries to slow things down. Much like retro-rock revivalist brethren Jet, the band just can't write a good slow song. Or at least, the slow songs get buried beneath the noise and adrenaline of the heavier songs.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible album. No Talent........2006-01-12

Terrible. Bom bom bom is the only decent song, the rest is absolutely terrible. Absolutely no talent...the songs are terrible, watered down crap, no catchy guitar hooks at all, (the first song only has TWO notes). The drummer is terrible, he cant even get simple loops right, not to mention there are maybe two fills on the whole damn album. DONT waste your money. If you want to hear classic rock-revival music, listen to silvertide. The absolutley disgusting dispicable crap "the living things" puts out isnt worth the plastic its burned into. The sad thing is MTV will probably give this terrible band hours of airplay.

4 out of 5 stars Great tunes by a great songwriter.......1999-11-05

Henderson, though one of the giants of American popular music, was, strangely, only one of three great songwriters from his neighborhood, since Harold Arlen & Jack Yellen grew up within walking distance of him on the east side of Buffalo. All of Henderson's music is great, & much of it is well known, although his name isn't anymore (in fact, his name never was, since Henderson wasn't his name - his real name was Ray Brost). The only two drawbacks are that (a) Henderson wrote so much that even 25 songs don't cover all of his best known works (e.g. "I Wanna Be Bad" isn't here), & (b) some of the songs were better done by performers other than the ones here. The most glaring example is "Let's Call it a Day", which in this CD is performed in a saccharine fashion but which was recorded elsewhere in a much more up tempo manner, all to the good.

And one other criticism - 1920s mono recordings don't need a CD - a tape would be fine.

Criticism notwithstanding, the guy was a phenomenal writer. If you like Irving Berlin, you'll like Henderson also.

A real joy, relaxing in English and German, ala Dietrich. Don't let the youthful cover picture dissuade your decision. Keller has style and emotion. Her later concert recordings are worth checking out as well.

4 out of 5 stars A sentimental and charming caberet singer..........2000-05-24

Almost reminiscent of Marlene Dietrich, Miss Keller has an accent, which is rather charming when singing standards like "These Foolish Things," Definately a sophistocated and stylish singer, her art was it it's hieght during the art deco 30's era when these songs were recorded. Not for everybody but definately elegant.

5 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-02-05

This is a really good representation of 20th century hymn tunes sung by a typical British Choir made up of boy sopranos, male altos and the usual number of tenors and basses. The choir sings very well using good diction and appropriate interpretation. The arrangements are varied, different groups of voices singing parts of a hymn usually alternating and eventually the full choir joins in; nothing unusual in the arrangements themselves. There is a nice variety of hymns, some more interesting than others. I will comment on a few of them as follows:
The opening hymn:'Christ, triumphant, ever reigning' is a good opener in that it is quick and begins with the boy sopranos and immediately gets your attention. John Barnard's majestic 'Guiting Power' tune sweeps the words up in a wide-ranging,flowing melody that creates from them a fine hymn.
'I, the Lord of sea and sky(Here I am, Lord) is a truly striking hymn! The words of this song begin with a proclamation in the verses; this is answered in the refrain by the singer's commitment to service. This is reflected in the tune. The melody for the verses has a vigorous movement to proclaim the work of God in creation, His continuing love for that creation, and His call for service. Both the words and music are by the American Jesuit musician Daniel L. Schutte, who has served both on college campuses and in parish ministry.
'All My Hope On God Is Founded' the tune of which is written by Herbert Howells and is called 'Michael'in memory of his son who died in childhood. It is a lovely melody and the words suit it very well.
The composer Ralph Vaughan Williams was the music editor of the 'English Hymnal'. The most widely used of his own tunes was the 'Monk's Gate' which he created from a folk tune. It is subtly contrived, as the rhythm of the alleluias shows. 'Sine nomine' simply means without a name. The resulting hymn is 'For All the Saints'.

The Wells Cathedral Choir under the direction of Malcolm Archer accompanied by Rupert Gough on the organ have produced an excellent disc.

          4 out of 5 stars Dan Schutte's Here I Am, Lord.......2001-01-08

I bought this collection because I saw the song, Here I Am, Lord written by Daniel Schutte. I grew up singing this song and many other pieces from the St. Louis Jesuits and this continues to be one that has deep meaning for me. In addition, the other pieces in this collection are very enjoyable to listen to, not only for worship but for time of reflection.

4 out of 5 stars God is an Englishman.......2000-06-05

After the Anglican Communion, particularly the American branch, has completed its transformation from a church to a political-social club, at least it will be remembered for two things: the beautiful and influential language of its Book of Common Prayer (1662) and its wonderful music. The English Hymn, volume 1, is a promising start to another English music series by Hyperion. This series complements Hyperion's English Anthems series, its Psalms at St. Paul's (many volumes of Anglican chant), and its two-CD collection of "Mags and Nuncs" (My Soul Doth Magnify the Lord and My Spirit Hath Rejoiced). Volume 1, "Christ Triumphant," features hymns written in the 20th century. The styles of the hymns range from confident, pre-Great War, "God is an Englishman" roof-raisers to insipid, happy-clappy jingles, which inadvertently, I assume, parallel the decline of the church. The Wells Cathedral Choir sings with gusto and, typical of Hyperion, the sound quality is excellent. My only disappointment came when the CD ended - is this all there is to the 20th century? I hope Hyperion plans to include more than one volume on the 20th century in this series. If you enjoy this type of music, you will be satisfied with this CD. If you have CDs from the other series listed above, the English Hymn, vol. 1, and a programmable, carousel-CD player, now you can click your heels and transport yourself to Evensong at King's College, Cambridge, or St. Paul's, London!
