Now that the Survivor television spectacle is over and done--evil Richard having snatched the coveted million bucks--legions of fans are undergoing Survivor withdrawal. What to do with our Wednesday nights now that we can't watch a bunch of unwashed folks eat rats, scratch bug bites, and scheme behind each other's backs? How about recreating a Survivor scenario in your living room? Load up on sand, rice, and rodents, invite a few friends over (you can vote them out by midnight), dream up a few immunity challenges, and play the Survivor soundtrack to fully capture the effect of the island contest. With the new-agey drums and chants of the main title theme, "Ancient Voices" (the extended version included here!), the pomp and circumstance of "Big Drama," the thrilling trill of "Survivor Yell," and the suspense of "Tally the Vote"--all culled from the show--you can recall the best days of the Tagi and Pagong. --Tod Nelson

It is good to be able to listen to music from survivor. Highlights for me are I Can see it and Island Council.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Survivor .......2006-08-10

Exactly what I was after - this cd of the Survivor series music is great. We used it for a team workshop and everyone commented on how good it was to have the actual music from the tv show.

3 out of 5 stars Mixed bag, but a satisfied owner........2006-02-21

Since I haven't been able to find any of these tracks on iTunes or elsewhere for individual purchase, I have to give this album a recommendation.

Overall, the music lacks significant cohesiveness in tone to make it really compelling as a whole and sometimes employs curious instrumentation and style, but individual pieces like Voices of Heaven and the main theme (Ancient Voices) are emotively powerful in their simplicity despite the use of what sounds like "sampled" sounds in place of natural instruments like the strings in Ancient Voices.

The CD does a better job than many soundtracks in including key musical moments that should be there even while it is understandably constrained to include the almost glaring departures from the kind of atmosphere you'd expect from music for such a subject.

All the stand out tracks are here: Ancient Voices, I Can See It (think, the reflective waterfall-idol-tossing ceremony from Outback), Voices of Heaven, and the foreboding tribal council backdrop Tally the Vote.

Four fantastic tracks with other nice cues is enough for me to give this album a thumbs up. If you have a favorite cue or two, chances are it's here.

5 out of 5 stars Great Survivor soundtrack.......2005-09-09

This is great. I organized a Survivor theme party for my office and used this soundtrack (I was Jeff!). Folks loved it -- added great atmosphere to the party.

5 out of 5 stars SURVIVOR IS HOT!.......2005-02-16

Well done Russ Landau & David Vanacore! This cd is absolutely brilliant!! The tribal beats and world rythym are complimented really well by the various vocals on the tracks (especially 'My Tribe'). Both 'Ancient Voices' and 'Ancient Voices-Extended' are incredible pieces of music and are without a doubt the best tracks on the CD (Though 'Tally The Votes' and 'Survivor Yell' are right behind them). 'Buzzed' is a little annoying (It's the same flippin' beat over and over again), but you've still got 18 others to choose from. It's amazing; you just put the CD into your player and you're transported right back to Pulau Tiga, (though it's a pity Colleen isn't here with me! What can I say; she's hot and so is this disc!) Even if your not a fan of the show, or you've nver seen it before, this CD is well worth the price, purely because it's GREAT MUSIC!!

Album Description

Michael Landau is perhaps the most widely respected session guitarist of all time having played with Miles Davis, Chaka Khan, Mariah Carey, Quincy Jones, Joni Mitchell, Diana Ross, Rod Stewart, James Taylor, The Jefferson Airplane, Seal, and a host of others.. This double CD live recording captures Michael Landau's critically acclaimed guitar ability as it was showcased at an LA club during 2006. Landau makes his instrument do the talking on this 2 CD set, performing some of the most incredible sounds and phrases ever recorded on a guitar.

3 out of 5 stars Virtuoso guitarist but............2007-02-08

If you're looking at this review you probably already know that Mike Landau is one of the most recorded guitarists in the history of music. His name is near the top of any list of best guitar players by those in the know and he can play any style with great feel and tone. Despite his awesome credentials I feel this CD lacks the immediate listenability of similar releases by his peers. For example, Steve Lukather is another guitarist with similar credentials but in the past few years has released a much more rocking collection of songs with his live band "El Grupo" (ironically featuring a Landau cut) and then backed that up with an outstanding CD with his regular band Toto. Don't get me wrong, I do think that this music is brilliant but would really love for Landau to show the world that he can rock too! Please release a CD that's full of songs that I can play loud while driving my car fast!!

4 out of 5 stars guitargod.......2007-02-04

I think this cd is excellent. The only weak area is the vocal.I'm not sure who is singing on this cd,but this person schould never sing, not even in the shower!Micheal's guitar is fantastic. The remainder of the music is great, but again the vocals ruin this cd!With a good vocalist this cd is 5 stars all the way!

5 out of 5 stars Mike Landau - Live.......2007-01-10

Being a diehard fan of Landau for several years now -- this is a MUST OWN cd, if you claim to be a "Micheal Landau Fan". Rooted in his blues / rock mojo Landau delivers, cool collection of tunes -- add this to your collection immediately!!!

5 out of 5 stars Tone paradise.......2006-11-08

This cd is pure tone paradise. Mr. Landau is a wonderful player, and the band is fantastic (I love the keyboards work from Scott Kinsey). The first cd is more rock/blues oriented, and the second cd have a more jazzy oriented side. Both sides sound great, and Michael Landau shows why he is considered a master with a guitar in his hands. A great live fussion cd.

4 out of 5 stars A more mature Landau............2006-11-06

I've been a fan of Michael Landau for a number of years now. He's another one of those west coast studio electric guitar masters who's played on a ton of albums by the who's who of popular music and is a musician's musician but still manages to evade the greater spotlight of popularity on his own. For whatever reason, the trend lately has been for guys like him and Scott Henderson (who also, coincidently, released a 2-disc live album on Tone Center records last year) to record their solo live shows to display just how talented they are. This collection is no exception. In my opinion, his previous solo studio efforts sound like a "Guitar Hero" trying to be serious, but this endeavor seems to be a bit more ambilateral. The new material (to me, at least) has a much wider scope of feeling and a more palpable appeal than his previous work. There are some interesting changes in arrangements to some of Landau's previously recorded material and his guitar playing, as always, is impressive. On the critical side, his vocals leave a bit to be desired but that is the achilles heal of a lot of instrumental "players" (me included) and it's a minor gripe because his vocal performance is, although imperfect, genuine and acceptable. If you are new to Landau's music this is a good introduction but you'll want to go back and listen to the Burning Water and Raging Honkies stuff (along with the hundred or so platinum albums he's played on) to get the whole "experience" (Hendrix comparisons always come up). I have to say also that in regards to the actual recording this is perhaps the best overall sounding record that I've heard come out of the Tone Center label. The recording, mixing and mastering were well done. If you are a new listener or a long time fan you'll dig this record.

5 out of 5 stars Listened to this soundtrack from the age of 7.......2005-12-16

When the movie came out, I was about 7 yrs old, living in California. As I heard the theme at the beginning of the movie, I knew I had to have the soundtrack. I have probably listened to it a million times since then, and it nevers gets old or less hauntingly beautiful. This is a soundtrack everyone must have. The Grand Canyon Fanfare/End Titles track is amazing, especially due to Howard's use of french horns. GET THIS SOUNDTRACK!!! YOU WILL LOVE IT!!!

5 out of 5 stars amazing james, amazing.......2004-05-10

i think is all said by the first reviewer(great review), i don't know how much time newton howard plays in this cd but the time he does is just one of the best moments of music i've listened to in my whole life. You won't be tired after hours playing the main song. I follow james and by now this is the best in my opinion. Just get it.

5 out of 5 stars Once you hear it, it will never let you go........2000-09-08

A single E minor note in the bass, followed immediately with a short, quick arpeggio by an electric guitar which fades off into the distance. A choir begins to sing a haunting sequence of chords, accentuated by conga drums. After two such sequences, a synth bass pattern fades in, gains strength, and blends in with the choir. This bass pattern is not unlike that heard several times in "The Fugitive", which would be made two years later. The drum kit and electric guitars jump in periodically with accentuating chords of their own. This pattern continues until the music does a complete 180 degree turn and becomes livelier, signaling the start of the slow motion TV basketball sequence.

So begins the Main Title of "Grand Canyon" by James Newton Howard, composer of such dramatic scores as "The Fugitive", "The Devil's Advocate", "A Perfect Murder", "Outbreak", and the theme from "ER."

The first time I saw the movie, I couldn't get that haunting synth bass pattern from the theme out of my head. After the second time, I was that much more determined to find this recording. Most of the cues on this album are for the more climatic action sequences in the film (the shootings, finding the baby, the dream scenes, etc.) But the album does have its bright points. The Warren Zevon song, "Searching for a Heart" is here, heard as Roberto is saying goodbye to his summer girlfriend from camp. And at the end of the album, the "Grand Canyon" theme, played triumphantly by a brass section, resounds with the knowledge that if we keep hope alive, good will forever conquer evil. A very touching album.

4 out of 5 stars Another under rated score from James Newton Howard.......2000-09-05

James Newton Howard is a teriffic composer. He has written some magnificent scores such as Waterworld, Wyatt Earp, Dinosaur and The Postman to name just a few. Grand Canyon is no exception. It is reminicent of some of his other scores by its use of the brilliant L.A Master Chorale to give the music great depth (much like Dinosaur and The Postman). Grand Canyon is in parts quiet and mystical and sometimes bold and sweeping. It also has moments of tension like that of the score for a thriller. Overall it is a great listening experience.

5 out of 5 stars black comedy rossinian style.......2003-03-30

Fra Diavolo is based on a true character although the plot of
this opera is totally ficticious - it is a black comedy about
a highway robber - the music is rossinian in style with florid
arias and many group ensembles with every singer pattering at
the same time but recitatives are replaced by spoken-dialogues
as is the custom in french opéra-comique. It takes a first-class
cast to pull it off and that is what we get here although most
soloists are in their twillight years. Nicolai Gedda at 58 re-
mains amazingly suave and dexterous as Diavolo - Mady Mesplé
(52) is charmingly girlish and very agile - Jane Berbié (52)
and Rémy Corazza (50) are delighfully funny as an english cou-
ple recently robbed - the rest of the cast is excellent. It is
well conducted and recorded - it comes on two super-bargain CDs
with a synopsis but no libretto which may be a drawback for non
french-speaking people - otherwise it is highly recommandable.

Although she's not averse to doing new material (she appeared in William Finn's Falsettoland, for instance, and let's not forget that brilliant bomb called Nick and Nora), Faith Prince is a living embodiment of Broadway's golden age. From her star-making turn as Miss Adelaide in the 1992 revival of Guys and Dolls to superb performances in the recent revivals of Little Me and The King and I, Prince always is perfectly attuned to classic material. In this short-lived revival of the 1956 musical Bells Are Ringing (directed by Tina Landau, whose previous musical-directing experience was on Floyd Collins), the singer reprises a role created by Judy Holliday and once again proves her versatility. The duet with Marc Kadisch on "Just in Time" is particularly delicious, doing full justice to that beloved song. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars 1956 recording still wins over 2001.......2006-08-11

I have always loved the 1956 Original Broadway Cast recording. The orchestrations and singers' musical talent and vocal inflections are brilliant. I was thrilled to see that there was a 2001 revival of this play, and looked forward to hearing the score captured with 2001 recording technology. Unfortunately, where the 1956 cast and orchestra shine, the 2001 version is completely without a soul. The 2001 orchestra sounds as though it must have been one of those "orchestra machines" they are using now in some productions-- there is no warmth or artistic interpretation to the music-- just notes being mechanically played off a page (or computer code I guess).

I also didn't understand, as I did in the Broadway Cast recording, why the female lead would have any attraction for the male lead. In the 2001 recording, answering-service girl Ella Peterson works for Jeff Moss's answering service. The short amount of dialog during the song (changed from the 1950's wording) sounds like he is having her cover for him while he juggles his various girlfriends. He sounds patronizing in his delivery. Then she sings a song about how she's fallen in love with this guy? Then later when pursuing her, he just sounds needy and annoyingly shrill instead of the genuine and confident interpretation by Sydney Chaplin in the 1956 recording.

If you want the soundtrack to this wonderful play, I recommend the Original 1956 Cast Recording with Judy Holliday and Sydney Chaplin (more genuine then the movie's Dean Martin in my opinion) playing the two leads. After hearing the 2001 version, the 1956 CD sounds surprisingly rich and stereophonic.

4 out of 5 stars a fine revival.......2003-01-04

BELLS ARE RINGING was brought back to Broadway in 2001, in an ill-fated revival that only lasted a couple of months due to lukewarm notices.

Tony-winner Faith Prince (GUYS AND DOLLS) gives her all in the lead role of hopeless romantic Ella Peterson. The role is virtually owned by the late Judy Holliday, who starred in the original Broadway run and later the under-rated movie version. Prince gives us a fresh new look at Ella, with glowing readings of "It's a Perfect Relationship", "Just in Time" and the still-delicious "The Party's Over".

Marc Kudisch, in the decidedly-wooden role of Jeff Moss, sings wonderfully in his songs including the frenetic "I Met a Girl" and "Long Before I Knew You".

This cast also includes Beth Fowler as Sue and Martin Moran as Sandor, who share the comical duet "Salzburg".

Most of the criticism in this revival was aimed at Tina Landau's direction, and the age of the book which seemed too old-fashioned for 'modern' theatregoers. Still, a great musical and a great recording for fans.

Highly-recommended

3 out of 5 stars Good only if you saw the show........2002-07-18

I loved the revival of the musical. It's classic! It's so funny and charming and unpretentious. But unfortuneately this album displays the musical as dull and lifeless. Faith Prince comes off as overplayed and "kitschy" and Mark Kudisch comes off as bored. When I saw the show neither seemed that way at all. The song "I'm Going Back" brought the house down on Broadway, but I often skip that track when I listen to the cd, I'm sorry to say. Luckily, the big hit from the show "The Party's Over" is still as beautiful as the first time it was written-- and Thank God. It's a good play... a good cast... and has good music! It just comes off as very poor and dull...

4 out of 5 stars Have "Faith" in These Bells.......2002-06-29

Let's face it..."Bells Are Ringing" is hardly a substantive Broadway classic. It's theme is dated, as are its notions of the male/female relationship, and many of its references remain staunchly in the 1950s conventionailty of its genesis. But you know what? These shortcomings are equally some of this shows definite charms. "Bells..." is a quintessential example of the Broadway musical's prime years of the 50s and 60s. It's light, entertaining, funny, hummable, and just plain fun. There's none of the "sterm-and-drang" that would come post-Viet Nam. This new recording, quite frankly, is a vast improvement over the original for one simple reason: the two leads can actually sing. Judy Holliday was a marvel of an actress, and this show was tailored to her abilities, but her raspy voice actually detracted from the cleverness of these songs. And Sidney Chaplin, poor soul, was a hapless singer even at the best of times. This time out, Faith Prince reinvents the role as her own and displays both the musical and comedic flair that make her such a unique presence on the legit stage. If only she received more roles of this stature. Can somebody please tailor a new vehicle worthy of her talents? Mark Kudisch brings a pleasing baritone and an effortless energy to his role, and the two play off one another beautifully on this recording. Although some of these songs have dated somewhat, it's still a thrill to hear them delivered as if they were just composed. Of course, "Just in Time" and "The Party's Over" have justifiable reputations, but there are more goodies behind the hits. "It's a Perfect Relationship", "Hello, Hello There", "Drop a Name" and I'm Going Back" are all lively and delicious musical cotton candy, funny and fun to hear with these performers. What makes this CD so good is that it's one of the best produced original cast recordings in years. The singers sound like they're right next to you, adding to the intimacy and personable nature of their characters. There's none of the bobast and canyon-like distance so typical of the post-Lloyd Webber age. Here, you feel like you're listening to a couple of old chums and you're just aching for them to find each other. Of course, you know they will, but their musical journey is still a hoot. This "Bells Are Ringing" is a simple, direct, joyously ebullient lark from start to finish. It's a great addition to any Broadway collection, and a reminder of why those simple musical-comedy shows were such a treat in their heydey. Enjoy.

1 out of 5 stars SORRY, WRONG NUMBER!.......2002-01-25

Ringing? More like clunking. Way back in '56, Comden and Green sat down and wrote a musical for their chum Judy Holliday. With Jule Stein's help, this trio concocted the classic Bells Are Ringing---a musical marvel about a telephone answering service in New York City. The original recording---recently reissued with bonus tracks by Sony Legacy---is also a classic, and belongs in every show music library. This recording of the recently deceased Broadway revival does not. The music and lyrics are still wonderful and moving and funny, but star Faith Prince is cloying and charmless. Sorry, wrong number.

Someone said in a previous review, "Vinnie shows the listener that he can play this type of music too." Maybe I'm arguing for the sake of argument, but to say that is like saying, "Hey you know what? Peanut butter has recently proven that he can hang with regular butter as a compliment to jelly." He hasn't proven anything, and he has nothing else to prove. That's what he DOES. He was one of the two guys asked to play at the Lifetime Achievement Award Ceremony for Steve Gadd, who, if you are not familiar, is only the greatest studio drummer to walk the face of the earth, prior to Vinnie. Vinnie is basically first call for any gig, whether it be Straight-ahead jazz, bop, jazz-fusion, rock, hip-hop, fusion, afro-cuban, pop top 40, easy listening, rap, country, you name it. He has played it. He was even on Megadeath's latest record. You getting my drift? If a real drummer is desired, so is Vinnie. He doesn't need to prove anything to ignorant listeners. You know, if you haven't heard him play this type of music before, then just say, "Man, I've never heard him play this type of music before. I love it, and I've obviously got a lot more music to listen to." But don't act like you know something nobody else does. He's played with Landau 100,000 times, and it's almost always this type of music. He studied at Berklee School of Music under Gary Chafee, alongside Steve Smith, who played with Journey, then everybody else, including their cousins, twin sisters, great aunts and pet sasquatches. THIS guy isn't even quite as accomplished as Vinnie in his struggle for world domination of the drum scene, and he's amazing. The only reason Vinnie isn't on every record out there is because he cannot be in more than one place at a time. Here are some people Vinnie has played with, and keep in mind, this is probably about a tenth of what he has actually done.
Sting
John McLaughlin
Megadeath
Chick Corea
Jeff Richman
Michael Landau
Karizma
Allan Holdsworth
Solo project
Frank Zappa
You know what? I don't really have time for this, and neither do you. I just looked up his discography online. Check it out. Seriously. There is so much I didn't know either. http://www.vinniecolaiuta.com/discography.aspx

2 out of 5 stars Agreed! Drums-strong, compositions-weak.......2003-12-03

For some strange reason, I had hope that this would be different than all the other "supergroup" singular outing CDs. As the previous reviewers stated, Vinnie burns on this CD as well as David Garfield but, perhaps it's my age or the fact that I've been a musician for a long time, but I look for interesting and imaginative compositions as opposed to chops displays. If you want a CD that shows how drums are and should be played then, by all means, get this CD. Vinnie once again proves he's from another planet... absolutely mind boggling. Mr. Garfield shows his formidable talents as well but, in my opinion, that's where it ends. The compositions are what you'd expect from a group that probably just spent a couple of days composing these tunes; non-melodic, predictable and when you can't come up with any other ideas, throw endless solos in. Once again, if you want a CD just to hear what Vinnie does, then this is the one. If you want a CD to listen to good music; well... maybe the next "supergroup" will be able to do it.

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Fusion Album.......2003-10-14

Today is 14.10.2003 and I own this amazing piece of music since it came out in 2000. I attended two shows from the 1st and 2nd European legs and cannot get enough of it.

"Nothing Personal" is worth only buying the album. Colaiuta and Garfield are aliens and their virtuosity is breathtaking.

On "Document", the four members do not forget to play with passion and feeling. This is not a chops feast for the sake of it. They all displays a huge deal of musicality and taste.

Neil Stubenhaus is the best and most tasteful bass player in the world. Period. (OK I admit I am a HUGE fan of ALL his recordings). He's the ultimate groove master and he swings like crazy. Colaiuta is just weird, wild, amazing... he's Vinnie. One of his most impressive recording from a technical point of view. Mike Landau shines throughout and David Garfield proves that he's one of the best guy who ever sat behind a keyboards. He's a beautifully melodic and emotional player.

The music on this album is a mix of pure fusion and more R&B influenced tune. The strength of "Document" lies in the fact that you do not have to be a musician to enjoy it (I am not and could not play an instrument to save my life :-). Thanks to the musician's huge experience in various styles (they played with people like George Benson, Barbra Streisand, Sting, Michael Bolton, Cher, Larry Carlton, Frank Sinatra, Seal, James Taylor amongst many others), they managed to make the music accessible to "average listeners".

"Document" is, in my opinion, the ultimate fusion album.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and melodic...........2007-05-23

Its sorta hard to describe this CD. Its a Jazz ballad with more of a Lounge feel. Its very beautiful. It's bluesy, classy, romantic yet not melancholy. I love it! Buy it now.

5 out of 5 stars portishead meets jazz.......2007-05-06

Really mellow combination of classic blues and jazz with modern electronic/techno feel. Especially like the brass, but there's not enough of it. If there was a vocalist mixed in somehow (e.g. nina simone), this would be on one of the Verve Remixed albums for sure.

5 out of 5 stars you get what you pay for!.......2002-11-27

this is, without a doubt, one of the finest live recordings i have ever purchased. if you are a fan of true guitar music played with heart and guts, you owe it to yourself to pick up this double-disc release from one of America's finest guitarists.

for those who don't know, Michael Landau is one of the most-heard guitar players in popular music today. not just rock, but jazz, country and r & b, too! as far as i can remember, he has released 2 cds as a solo artist, 4 with "Burning Water", 2 with "Raging Honkies" and one with "Blue Horn". i own all 9, and while they are ALL excellent discs, this one is, without a doubt, the most-played on my system.

his sense of timing, touch, and tone stands out on this set of 14 tunes recorded with his trio, Jimmy "flim" Johnson and Toss Panos (plus Jeff Babko on one track). from the clean tones on "that day" to the beyond-overdrive squeeze of "born in the rain", he uses all the sounds you want to hear, and hits all the notes that the rest of us only dream of pulling.....and that's just the first disc!... his melodic dexterity and sense of groove are beyond compare. Mr Landau is a true original, and in a live set like this (recorded at the baked potato), we all benefit.

do yourself a favor, buy this double disc set. sure it's a bit pricey, but like i said, you get what you pay for. and i mean that in a good way!!

    Product Description

CAPTAIN LOUIE is a family musical with music & lyrics by Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Godspell, Pippin). Adapted for the stage by Anthony Stein, from the book The Trip by Caldecott Award winner Ezra Jack Keats (who authored and illustrated 24 childrens classics, including the Caldecott Award winning The Snowy Day and the Caldecott Honor Book, Goggle), it's the story of a young boy on Halloween night who escapes into his own imagination as a means of coping with the loneliness he feels when he moves to a new neighborhood.

5 out of 5 stars CAPTAIN LOUIE, IN HIS BIG RED PLANE, SOARS........2005-09-04

THIS MUSICAL WILL APPEAL TO ALL WHO ARE CHILDREN AT HEART.STEPHEN SCHWARTZ HAS COMPOSED YET ANOTHER WINNER AND THE YOUNGSTERS WHO PERFORM,DO JUSTICE TO EACH OF THE FANTASTIC SONGS.THE ORCHESTRATIONS ARE ALSO GREAT.ALL THE TRACKS ARE SPECIAL AND THIS C.D. IS A MUST FOR PARENTS WHO WISH TO INTRODUCE THEIR CHILDREN TO MUSICAL THEATRE.

5 out of 5 stars Another stunning piece of work from Stephen Schwartz.......2005-07-15

How has the, in my opinion, often underrated Stephen Shwartz followed up his massive success of 'Wicked'? Another big budget Broadway blockbuster? Another high-profile movie? No. Instead he has given us a truly beguiling score for a small-scale family musical with a young cast.

The quality of his writing (and, indeed, the performances on this cast recording) is of just as high a quality as 'Wicked', 'Children of Eden' and the neglected gem that is 'The Baker's Wife' (check it out if only to hear the absolutely magical 'Meadowlark').

There are elements of his previous work in 'Captain Louie' (even going back to 'Godspell'), so it is guaranteed that if you like his writing in any way, you will get a huge buzz from this new show.

By the way, don't think that, because this is a cast of young people, the complexity of his writing is in any way compromised - these young people are challenged and more than rise to that challenge!

    Superb listening!
