The U.K.-based Sneaker Pimps combine standard rock guitar parts with trip-hop beats and clear white-soul vocals, and, when strumming an acoustic guitar (as on the first single, "6 Underground"), the trio is virtually indistinguishable from Luscious Jackson. While using electronica's signifiers--jungle's rattle, trip-hop's dark churn, ambient's synth washes, hip-hop's samples--Sneaker Pimps never stray far from the comfy world of the pop song. Becoming X's opener, "Low Place Like Home," is only one step from Alanis, while the rousing closer is as breathy and sunny as the Cardigans. --Roni SarigAlbum Details

Dark, sexy, and some cynical bubblegum? Yes please........2006-12-08
It may well be Dayton's vocals that sublimate these recordings into perfection. Although ample credit is due to the solidity of the foundation on which her part stands--the downtempo grooves between the smooth, driving drums and the dark, languid bass--Dayton's voice puts a sheen over the sound that is remarkable. You can almost picture a cyberpunk angel singing about her fall from grace. Yet Dayton is most apparently human in her lyrics. Although Becoming X is riddled with clamor over its sensual nature, it also tackles numerous subjects ranging from pop star subjugation, failing religion, and alienation.
Chris Corner's additions to the album as principle composer are the second greatest feature of Becoming X. As with the dynamic vocal/lyrical ideas, the musical compositions found here cannot be placed into a single box. Starting with "Low Place Like Home", a piece which feels as vindictively cynical as it does spooky, to the alluring, airy sounds of "6 Underground", to the acoustic bite of "Post-Modern Sleaze" and the lonely "How Do", Becoming X features an admirable range of sonic expression and emotive vocabulary.
If you've been looking for a way into the realm of trip hop and electro-pop, this is definitely one of the best routes to take. Alternatively, if you've grown tired of other artists that are either too heavy, wall-of-sound or too focused on hip-hop influences and circuitous synth beats, this CD is a unique escape from those. Either way, it is virtuosic in its context and entirely worth checking out. If, when you first listen, you can feel the tug of Kelli Dayton's bittersweet vocals or Chris Corner's blackhearted grooves, you won't want to pass this up. Once you've tasted Becoming X, you'll never want to give it up.

If you're here, you're getting it.........2007-06-30
This is really good stuff, I mean really good. The production quality is excellent and the substance in this music must be heard to be appreciated. I didn't get to this place in music easily and can certainly understand people that don't "get" this style / sound, but if you do, you are in for a treat.
As the first song opens with a snobbish little hammered dulcimer bit that builds with some grove and then just flat out assaults the listener with technical, massive blasts that demand as much from your volume knob as can be tolerated.
This band breaks away from the norm and gets you to another place.
The Physics of Fire - Best Metal Album in Recent Years.......2007-05-21
The first thing I can say is that this album is a lot different from the first. While the first seemed to sort of carry on in the same death-metalcore style previous trekked out by legendary band Living Sacrifice, this CD definately heads in a more progressive direction. All I can say is that the lineup change with adding Kenis in on lead guitar made them go where few (American) Christian metal bands have gone in recent years. While the last album was somewhat lacking in technically challenging lead guitar parts, The Physics of Fire is chock-full of guitar solos and licks that would make any lover of Steve Vai, Rusty Cooley, or John Petrucci cry.
I can also say that the mixing and production quality on the CD is a step up from the first. Terminate Damnation's mixing and whatnot, while excellent, was done in more of a style that suits metalcore bands such as As I Lay Dying and August Burns Red, while The Physics of Fire's mix and production reaks of Opeth and Scar Symmetry-esque dynamics.
Another thing to note about this album is something not seen very often - it's a concept album, which I believe adds greatly to the value and integrity of the music. Every single song on the CD intertwine with each other to tell an epic story, with 4 of the songs creating the 4 part "The Physics of Fire" Suite.
I'd also rate this album high on playability...This CD has dominated my mp3 player, my Winamp playlists, and my car stereo ever since i picked it up on release date.
Go out, get this album, and prepare for the horns to be upped instantly.
Song writing and vocals take a step backwards.......2007-05-20
What I really liked about the 1st album seems to have disappeared. The vocal variety has pretty much gone with Jason pretty much belting out an angry shout more akin to Hardcore/Metalcore bands. There are no low growls (like in "one man parade" and "elegy"), no high pitched shreaks like in the opening to Elegy and through it. His main vocal style remains unchanged but with fewer changes in pitch, less growls etc. Even the vocal mixing is different, lacking the richness and depth of Terminate Damnation. Vocals are now rather flat and one dimensional with little overlaying of low and high together.
I normally love clean vocals (the new Dark Tranquility album - fiction is brilliant with Mikael Stanne's vocals haunting beautiful) but Alex Kenis's vocals sound weak and fluffy, syrupy sweet. Please either find a strong singer or forget the clean vocals.
The production seems muddied compared to the crisp, clean production style of the last album. The symbols are not as crisp and sharp as TD with guitars sounding hollower and flat.
Alex Kenis tries hard with his leads but honestly, they all sound pretty much the same with too much fretboard gymnastics and little feeling. Far too much hammering and not enough pinching or plucking, no wa wa pedals, with the tone sounding too soft (to cover up the sounds of his hands moving on the strings?) and never changing. Compared to TD (Terminate Damnation) leads (No Fall Too Far- lovely use of wa wa pedal and great feeling, Ex Nihilo - fits the rhythmn perfectly but not long enough :-), Into Oblivion - the acoustic lead is a thing of beauty) nothing comes close to them on POF. Unimaginative and repetitive....repetitive....have a said that before?
I really miss the style of songwriting of TD. This new album just doesn't have the slower, heavier mix of the old one or the change of tempo's. POF is overall faster without the brilliance of TD, no outstanding track like Elegy. Nocturne is the instrumental on POF, which is nice with guitar and piano but not as well written or absorbing as "Night's Sorrow" or "Denouement" and more repetitive than them both.
I really was excited when I heard BTA had a new album out but I confess I was worried when I heard about the band changes. It happens all the time, band gets new members and sounds different. This road is well worn with BTA packing their bags and now making the journey of change, evolving into something i'm not sure I like.
Well cya fellas. When you find out that the grass isn't greener on the other side and you miss home, i'll be here waiting.
Bringing it with fire!.......2007-05-16

A brutal blend of metal styles.......2007-05-12
Becoming the Archetype's lyrics may not SEEM overtly Christian, but they actually are VERY Christian, but they are just deeper and more theological than simply growling "JESUS!!"
All in all, an excellent CD!
this band does not stop short of amazing........2007-04-22
this is an album for eclectic Christian metalheads who like a variety of sounds. I recommend this band if you like Petra(R.I.P.), Stryper, Bloodgood(R.I.P), Mortification, Still Remains, Demon Hunter, Zao, As I Lay Dying, Underoath, Extol, the Showdown, Norma Jean, Flee The Seen, Kutless, Narnia, Tourniquet, Hangnail, and Jacob's Dream, and various other metalcore bands, whether Christian or secular.
Holy Awesome Metal.......2007-04-06
its funny these people. Go to a Deicide review. on there these same people i mentioned above will be complaining about the christians talking about deicide's lyrical content, saying "its just music lighten up". yeah, i say HYPOCRITE to you folks. ha ha!
and to just ignore and forget this band just because of their lyrical content is a horrible mistake. these guys are very talented musicians that make brutally heavy music, but at the same time sounding unique and original, not like half the bands comning out nowadays.
this album did take a little getting used to. you know, when you first hear an album and your like "ehh its okay" and then later down the road your like "AWESOME!!!' thats what this album was like.
my favorite songs are probably ex nihlio, elegy and the epigone. trivial paradoxym is a really weird and heavy song that just seems to go all over the place, and one man parade is an awesome straight forward rocker. the second half of elegy is just beautiful with the piano to guitar to the brutal end. they are coming out with a new album in may, looking forward to it.
its kind of hard to put these guys into a catagory. they dont really sound like anyone else. but its kind of progressive sounding like opeth and at times melodic like dark tranquility.
Yes this is a christian band. their lyricals are very meaningful and touching, so if you are a devout christian that happens to like metal this is a great band for you. and if your not christian, they still are a unique and talented band that deserves to be heard.

Unloco rule, eventhough they've kinda sold out and split up.......2005-06-16
I'd listened to this album on amazon a few times, before eventually deciding to buy it, and I have to say that, I wasn't disappointed atall!! I think it's an amazing album. Unloco are quite different, they're not too heavy, but they're not exactly like Simple Plan or New found Glory, I think they're inbetween, perhaps alternative rock, not that everything has to be in a genre, but I know that some people criticized Unloco for not being true metal or whatever, but I don't think it really matters too much what genre they are, it doesn't hide the fact that the music on this album is really good.
The music is amazing, and all of the instruments fit in so well with the lead singers singing.
My favourite tracks on the album are as follows:
Crashing-this is an amazing first song on the album, it really sets the tone for whats to come! I think this is one of the best songs.
Failure-this is a very good song. Not one of my favourites though
Hands and Knees-tackles bad relationships with parents, how many of us have experienced that I wonder. Good song.
Drowning in it-I love this song and have to say, this has to be one of the best songs on the album.
Empty-Again, another very good song. Another favourite of mine
:-)
Bruises-I love this song, although some people find it abit annoying.
Watching me slip, Becoming I and Fold are 3 more of the best on the album, each are absaloutely amazing, Watching me slip is more of a slow/sad song, Becoming I,starts off slow but the guitars are amazing, and the chorus becomes a little heavier and Fold, that's kick ass from start to finish.
Texas0 is the last song on the album, which is also a very very good song. It's similar to Watching me slip in the way that it's a slower and sadder song with very meaningful lyrics, and the lead singers voice sounds so nice!!! lol......ok, so what I'm trying to say is Unloco are a very talented and underrated band so if you're looking for a band to listen to, check Unloco out.
Also check out The Blank Theory, they're quite similar to Unloco and are cool as well :-)
2nd best bend on MAAW 2 tour.......2004-11-25
Extremely underrated album.......2004-08-15
1. Crashing (10/10) Simply awesome.
2. Failure (7/10) Really good song but loses its intensity after a few plays.
3. Hands and Knees (8/10) Another good song using their hard and melodic style.
4. Empty (10/10) BEST SONG ON THE ALBUM BY FAR. THIS SONG IS SO GOOD YOU CAN JUST GET CHILLS LISTENING TO IT. IF YOU ARE GOING TO LISTEN TO ANY OF THEIR SONGS LET THIS BE IT.
5. Bruises (5/10) Different style compared to their other songs I don't personally like it.
6. Drowning In It (6/10) Pretty good song but nothing too special.
7. Watching Me Slip (7/10) Acoustic song - still a great song.
8. Becoming I (9/10) Not as hard as the others but the melody is just so good.
9. Fold (10/10) Such a great song another one that you can feel.
10. Neurotic (9/10) Insane intro and stays good throughout the whole song.
11. Making Me Hate You (7/10)- Awesome guitar and pretty good chorus.
12. Texas (10/10) ANother acoustic mellow song but its great.
Great.......2004-06-28

Sherwood's music identifies itself as the geometric chaos.. So fractal.. So continues... The tracks are arranged in a circular way so that it keeps looping forever as far as your whirling sound system accepts digital muses!
Praising the CD will definitely make it sound as a commercial piece of art while its in reality a work of maturity and innovation regarding the techniques and the musical philosophy involved ...Becoming a Cliché is standing alone surrounded with many other Dub dreams...I can say that the feelings which are "secreted"! while listening are the same as the light reflected inside a falling water drop.. Towards a running blue...blue...river..

Though it's based on the 1978 X-rated movie of the same name, Debbie Does Dallas may be one of the most wholesome pieces of entertainment to ever hit Off Broadway. Played by Sherie Rene Scott (Aida), the title character has to do unsavory things in order to raise money and travel to Dallas, where she'll fulfill her destiny as a Texas Cowgirl cheerleader. But as "Where I Need to Go (Debbie's Theme)" makes clear (it's influenced by "My Heart Will Go On" from Titanic), this musical actually fits comfortably in the mainstream, emphasizing such classic American values as following your dream and using a bloated ballad to get there. But "Where I Need to Go" is one of only a few songs on this cast recording. The CD is more akin to a book on tape, relying heavily on the play's dialogues to fill the track listing. It might be fun to listen to it on a long cross-country drive, but in the comfort of your home, the appeal fades somewhat. If you're looking for songs that explore the world of adult entertainment, the soundtrack to Bruce Kimmel's 1976 movie, The First Nudie Musical, remains the one to top. --Elisabeth VincentelliCustomer Reviews:

A Rolling Ride - Tongue in Cheek - Visual INTENDED!!!.......2003-01-30
There are a total of maybe 4 actual songs on here. But, the spoken word is fantastic, and the visuals you create with your mind are even more amusing.
The girls, which are totally believable as a group of not too bright, but sexually charges adolescents speak in a group voice, with a Valley accent, that's just too funny. You can't help but laugh.
And the men, which are never the focus in the type of movie this is based on, come through as unimportant bystanders that just help to move the action along, but still show some small glimmers of personality that make you laugh at the genre of adult movies.
All in all, this CD is a humurous romp through the sexual discovery of an 18 year old girl pursuing her dreams. I would recommend to anyone who enjoys hearing something new, different, and that will certainly make you SMILE, if not LAUGH OUT LOUD!!!
Very Funny and totally original.......2003-01-16

Michael Nyman RULES !.......2004-07-22
Nyman is a excelent composer, his music is fast-paced, joyful and delicious.
I recomend this CD for anyone who is looking for a great minimalist composer.
Sensations mosaic.......2004-03-31
The rest of the compilation also honors the meaning of intensity. No one song in this disc will let your attention go away from the sensations mosaic this record constructs. Highly recommended.
Good start to meet Nyman.......2004-03-05
Ten years later, Nyman is recognised as one of the biggest composers of late XXth century. In part with the astonishing soundtrack of "The Piano". But I think this "Essential" album has more to offer to you.
Of course, my favourite is "Memorial". It is the most tragic music I have ever listened. It's a perfect track to describe what a word like "death" can mean. "Miserere Paraphrase" is the definition of another simple word: "pain".
Some other tracks are the purity of minimalism: "Knowing the Ropes", "Chasing Sheep is best left to Shepherds", "Wheelbarrow Walk" and "The Garden is Becoming a Robe Room" are of my favourites.
Why am I not giving it five stars? The reason: "Prospero's Books: Miranda". It is a bad way to end this album. Almost the whole album is devoted to Greenaway films: "The Draughtsman Contract", "The Cook, the Thief, his Wife and her Lover", "A Zed and Two Noughts" and "Drowning by Numbers" and the referred "Prospero's Books". The only track not belonging to a film is Stroking-Synchronising, from "Water Dances" album. This is a tremendous composition and should be the great finale for this album. "Miranda" is a dull and not creative composition, which Nyman doesn't have to be proud of it: it is too complex, too changing and breaks with the minimalist spirit. I also think the soprano and the mezzo don't play a "serious" part.
But of course, it has an honour place in my discography.
