5 out of 5 stars You need this one!.......2004-08-22

Words cannot describe the power in this Poi CD. There is so much "white light" energy throughout the entire set and the vocals will not let you down! God's Gallipolli is my favorite song off of CD two - makes you wanna get up and dance with them...Jackass Ginger, Platetectonic and Complicated are all booming with bass, violin, horn, and Frank Orrall's amazing deep vocals - even if you are not a die hard fan of Poi, this is one CD for every person with an ear for good music not to miss!!!

4 out of 5 stars Big Chicago band busts out with this one.......2003-02-08

It's hard to categorize this big, loud Chicago band, but on this live 2-CD release they could be considered a sort of cross between Sly and the Family Stone and Santana with house and techno elements. Which of course, makes them unique. Not many bands attempt to blend horns, strings, keyboards, guitars, percussion and vocals and fewer still succeed in doing so. PDP has been a Chicago favorite for years. Disc 2 especially has as much energy as you'll ever get on a little piece of plastic; if you're not moving to that; you're beyond help. Check out the monologue on "Shu Zulu Za", Frank Orral's snarling vocals throughout, and especially the last two tracks on Disc 2, "Platetectonic" and "Complicated"; the latter their best-known number. You'll wish you were at the concert! Pop it in your CD player, turn it up and protect your fragile valuables!

5 out of 5 stars Next best thing to being there.......2002-12-11

If you have not been fortunate enough to experience Poi Dog Pondering live, this will give you a taste of what you're missing. I've seen Poi Dog twice, and this 2-disc set is almost like being there. Poi Dog has so much energy onstage that you can't help but get wrapped up in the music. The live versions of their older tunes still keep a little of the old flavor, but they definitely adapt well to the newer dance rhythms Poi Dog has embraced over the past few releases. And the songs here from Pomegranate and Volo Volo surpass the studio versions. This is my favorite PDP disc and one of my favorites in my collection.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Sampling.......2002-09-28

This is the record that sold me on PDP. When I lived in Chicago PDP was absolutely huge there. I couldn't help but fall under their spell. This set shows the various sides to the band. The second CD just burns throughout. It lifts your spirits and makes you want to dance and sing along...

4 out of 5 stars Lightning in a Bottle.......2002-09-12

There are two reasons to buy this album: You must hear Frank in the beginning of the album say "Hello my friends, thanks so much for coming." It sounds like he's welcoming people for Sunday mass--priceless. Secondly, I've introduced these guys to at least a dozen people and every single one has become a fan to some degree. Warrants mentioning. Plus, gotta love that album cover!

4 out of 5 stars It's impossible to derscribe in words why I like Monk's stuff so much.......2006-11-06

I feel that in many ways, the only way to properly review Meredith Monk is not to write text, but to insert a wav file that would reveal me howling in glee or anguish in reaction to her recordings. Indeed, this is how Meredith Monk uses voice herself, for even when she does use words, she often uses them in most abstract way possible, playing more with their sounds than their meaning.

_Mercy_ is no different. Monk explores the possibility of voice in ways that no one else has. Her work is so playful when it comes to sound and voice--her pieces insight a little laughter, a little joy, and sometimes just plain awe. I was a little dismayed to hear her voice being synthesized and sampled a little in this recording, for I always thought that her work was strongest for NOT using electronics but allowing voice to have its own natural depth. Pieces like "Shaking" make it clear that, in Monk's musical world, voice is as much an instrument to be arranged as piano or percussion.

The I Ching says that before a brilliant person begins something great, she must look foolish to the crowd. I have turned many a friend off from Monk just by playing some of her work, but I remain a big fan, listening to her musical oddities with a pleasure bordering on rapture.

5 out of 5 stars Otherworldy Music.......2003-10-22

Downtown New York is famous for it's post-modern stew of approaches to the arts. A downtowner is likely to be a musician/artist or a poet/performer and the idea of one person controlling all aspects of a production isn't all that far-fetched. It's a new twist on the old Wagnerian ideal of gesamskunstwerk and perhaps the one figure that best represents this is Meredith Monk. Known as a dancer, choreographer, singer, and composer, Monk's work is complex and never complete without the visual element, based as it is on movement and striking stage pictures. Yet musically, she is a powerful force in her own right. Her conceptual frame work is based around her voice and exploring extended vocal techniques from world cultures and has developed from her early solo explorations, through the marvelous work with her vocal ensemble and even to her mega work opera, Atlas.

Mercy is the latest work to be recorded in the Monk canon, and it is a beauty. The piece is conceived for her vocal ensemble with the addition of a trio of multi-instrumentalists. Monk's process with a composition is interesting. She will supply sketches to her performers and then develop the work through improvisation, much like the process used by many modern dance troupes. The material is based on familiar musical modes and superficially has a resemblance to better known minimalists like Steve Reich and Phillip Glass. Except that with Monk, the improvisational element in the piece gives the works an internal life that goes beyond mere process music. Each piece is a journey, with a wonderful mix of the familiar and the surprising. The acuity of the vocal ensemble is astounding. They have all worked with Monk for many years and have assimilated her vocal techniques while each of them brings something original to the process. The result is a haunting recording, gently breaking over the listener like waves, but with a reservoir of deep emotion.

As always with a Monk work, it's a shame not to have a visual document for this piece. As DVD and CD-ROM technology get more and more advanced, it seems to me that this kind of work would be a no-brainer for technology. A DVD of the work might be more hypnotizing...in fact, if the work was recorded especially as a DVD, as opposed to a recorded live performance, this might be the best way to experience Monk's haunting work. That being said, this CD is a lovely, if only partial, document. ECM and Manfred Eichter have once again recorded this in their trademark sound.... spacious and dark, with an ambience that is as much a part of the music on their label as anything the performers do. This is marvelous late night music...deeply calming and emotionally moving. It is also one of the best introductions to the unique work of one of New York's most interesting post-modern figures.

5 out of 5 stars Meredith's Beautiful Music..........2003-01-11

....A masterpiece of stunning beauty....one of her greatest recordings.... full of passion and seasoned with grace.... 'Mercy' is a great place to start for anyone curious about the music of Meredith Monk.... and if you are a long time fan, it will rocket to the top of your fave list... it is recordings like this that make "hearing" such a wonderful thing.... a treat for your hear holes....

5 out of 5 stars Moving and Intriguing.......2002-12-21

In this work Ms. Monk again demonstrates her unique creativity and why she received the MacArthur Foundation 'genius' award. There is simply nothing else like her work. This disc captures much of the performance of 'Mercy', which combined Monk's vocal compositions with Ann Hamilton's visual art. Monk's work is moving and intriguing. For those interested in exploring the voice as art, I readily recommend 'Mercy'.

5 out of 5 stars Meredith Monk as I've Always Loved Her.......2002-11-10

Gorgeous. Magnificent. Breathtaking. Haunting. These are the words I use to describe the best of Meredith Monk's music, and this cd is the best she's done since... "Turtle Dreams"? It's mysterious and exciting and instantly recognizable as Meredith Monk. I've been listening to it non-stop for a week now, and I can't get it out of my head. As soon as it's finished playing, I want to hear the whole thing again from beginning to end. A Masterpiece.

Madonna's Ray of Light spliced with Deepak Chopra's celebrity-studded Gift of Love disc is perhaps the commercial counterpart to Isabelle Pascale Granet's intriguingly erotic Sanctity. High-minded, deep-bodied, and soul-searching, spoken word flows forth in both English and French, combining with sensuously syncopated dance beats, lyrical chant, and Granet partner Ben Arrindell's ambient-jazz grooves. Granet's words are sultry and whispery, seducing the listener; proud and fiery, celebrating the sacredness of sex and spirit; and on "I Must Speak (Of What I'd Rather Not)," her delivery is steeped in a river of sobs, as healing comes by giving voice to her wounded womanhood. Sanctity is darkly delicious, desirous, and dangerous to the powers who'd keep our passion under wraps. Be unafraid, Granet seems to say, explore the sanctity of your own vitality. --Paige La Grone

Album Description

"Sanctity" is a deeply sensuous and highly emotionally charged album. Ambient grooves and urban beats interweave with ancient chants and spoken poetry. Slightly reminiscent of Enigma's first album, "Sanctity" falls in the category of World Beat/Ambient.

Isabelle Granet's Sanctity is pure pleasure. This is the Cd I was waiting for.

When I listen to it my body becomes slave to the languorous but powerful rythm of the music. My mind seems to float and I feel relaxed, sensual, beautiful and very feminine. I have a hard time to tell which song is my favorite because they all touch a sensitive string of my body. The songs seem to emerge directly from her soul.

The first half of this album (the California Suite) is a religious experience for me. Grey Day and Light Shine both have passages that make my soul soar and my hair stand on end. It seems positively Pagan. Crank up the stereo and let it take you away.

The rest of the album is fine, but not nearly so great as the first half. Even if the rest of the album were missing, the California Suite would easily justify the cost of the CD.

5 out of 5 stars Sunbear.......2004-02-08

Amazing that no one else has entered a review for this CD. One track alone is as good as anything Jesse ever did. "Grey Day" is a lilting journey into a state of mind that can strongly evoke the feeling of being in the woods, in the fog and rain, with senses saturated, surrounded by the elements and the natural high of being in the moment, caught up in nature's dance. The haunting lyrics will stay with you and take you out of yourself for a while with the flute accompaniment. The tract is long because it evolves into a jazz set only to return to you to earth with an expanded mind. Too bad a shorter version of this tract hasn't been produced or remixed a "greatest hits" songlist. Buy this CD!

"Lightshine", the title tract,is also a well known and positive keeper from Jesse (the human songbird) as well. Plenty of poetry on this one.

5 out of 5 stars Synthesis of Folk Music and Wisdom with an Eastern Outlook.......2003-11-28

Ever since I heard this artist's song "Love Out of Nowhere" (from her preceding Flying Time album) her music has been an important part of my life. She is a masterful (I mean simply the best that I have heard) acoustic guitar player, and an even better singer and composer. Better still, her virtuosity is never exhibited for its own sake, but always in the service of an artistic vision that ranges far beyond this place and time and yet never ceases to be personal and totally from the heart.

This album is the second of two completely revolutionary albums that blend U.S. folk, blues and pop with Eastern philosophical and musical influences. While Linda Waterfall has released six albums prior to these two, with many excellent songs, these two albums represent such a flowering of her talent that for me the main importance of those earlier works is that they have led to these two (so far) extraordinary creations. This is truly an artist at the very peak of her creative abilities, and you feel that with every word and with every note.

The breakthrough album was Flying Time, which explored the universe's incomprehensible powers of creation with gratitude and wonder, both directly and also in its manifestations within a mother's love, the differences between men and women that create the tension that makes relationships live, individual freedom, the importance of the ephemeral in our finite existence, the integrity of Nature ("Tree," written and sung in collaboration with a class of 5th graders), the artist's struggle to touch and express universal qualities ("Climbing to the High Country," my favorite song of all time), praise of the forces of destruction that make creation possible, and the constant loss of and regaining of balance that allows growth to occur.

Some of the songs on "In the Presence of the Light" continue to develop those themes. This is particularly true of the title track, an astonishing feat of guitar and vocal blending (the instrument and the voice play off one another as if the artist contained two separate identities living in constant and perfect appreciation of one another). While this interplay is occurring, the lyric paints a picture of human potential suffering and repressed but nonetheless ever-connected to a greater power:

Bargains of power and transactions of envy
Human promise wasting in prisons and factories
Body unraveling and energy failing
Still the branch is twisting, still the leaves are lifting
To the Light

"Reception" deals on a more personal level with tapping in to that same universal consciousness.

The clouds are drawing together
There is power at hand, an open place to stand
Potential reaching from above and below
With a spark, the current flows
Reach up and make it flow

Clearing a path for reception...

This song features the artist's keyboard skills, which are only exceeded by her abilities as a guitarist.

On her Web site (lindawaterfall.com) Waterfall mentions a recent struggle with cancer, from which she is now recovering, and to me (I'm only guessing) that seems to have created the kind of intense engagement with the beauty of this world that a mortal threat can sometimes bring. Particularly notable in that regard is "Cool Touch," in which a trio of unbelievably sweet voices (Linda and two of her friends) harmonize in as irresistable an expression of pure joy as I've ever heard on a recording.

I like the love sky
So blue, so tender
The beauty of this world makes me surrender
I like soft rainfall
I like to watch the people
When their sweet sleep makes them look like angels

I got a cool touch
I really do joylife so much
I like to take a happy breath of air

"Mango Mouth" expresses a similar love for the sweetness of the here and now.

"Waiting for Your Luck to Change" to me is the most poignant and direct expression of this confrontation with illness, and once again while acknowledging the down side of the situation it remains heartbreakingly positive and life-affirming while looking with both grieving and acceptance at the possibility that death is waiting (as it always is).

You've done your best
Someone else will have to do the rest now, rest now
You gave it your heart and soul
Some things you can't control

Waiting for your luck to change
Sometimes that's all you can do
Find a way to laugh today
Waiting for your luck to change
You know your luck is bound to change

The last four songs move in a radically different direction - setting poems from Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass to music. They are beautiful, but in a completely different way from the other eight songs. According to the liner notes, they were commissioned by the Seattle Arts Commission and completed around the time of the artist's illness. By the time of this album the artist had recovered and was able to perform them herself, which she does on these tracks. I think that by including such diverse material she was showing a lot of faith in her audience, and I only hope that we can be worthy of that trust!

If you like folk music, brilliant songwriting, performance and arranging, and have even the slightest inclination toward finding a spiritual path then I hope you will listen to this music, because it was created for you.

1 out of 5 stars The worst album of the year? I think so........2004-07-07

I can't believe I wasted my money on this! After being recommended the album on a popular Radiohead forum, I thought I would give it a go. I regret even searching Amazon for it now. From start to finish, this album did nothing but hurt my ears. Jittery beats and piercing screams echo about all over the place and there are absolutely no melodies or music to speak of. Basically, it's just screaming. Looped screaming, distorted screaming, echoed screaming. Every type of screaming you could imagine. And it isn't even backed by music! Just the same jittery beat looped over and over. Tick tick tick. Over and over and over again. I thought my brain was going to explode after a few seconds of this tripe.

Be VERY wary of the artist's description. It's NOTHING like you think it's going to be.

p.s. I am NOT 'Come Louder'.
