It is rare enough to mention it, NAZCA comes from a French area which doesn't usually fit with rock music, that is the island of La Réunion ! Yet this is one of the best melodic hard-rock groups of the country. The mini-CD "Reaching Your Soul" was published in July 1997 and surprised both the national and international press. Dennis WARD (VANDEN PLAS, ANGRA…) joined the band in the studio and helped recording the first album "The White Wheel" in January 2001, that will finally be published two years later on the Brennus label. The German audience, which is known to be very hard to please as far as heavy-metal is concerned, seems already conquered. It's a real discovery you shouldn't miss !

Amazing 1st album.......2004-06-27

This is a very promissing debut album from a band that is working in 2004 between Paris and Reunion Island to record a 2nd album.
The singer (nicknamed "blanc blanc") sings in english and has a superb voice close to Toto's Steve Lukather's voice or some powerful scandinavian hard rock singers. This CD includes a beautiful instrumental track called "Strange" : it sounds like a Van Halen track.

The CD contains lyrics and pictures of the band.

I'd say all the tracks are very representative of the 70's and so the track selections are impeccable. The sound qualiy is okay but given the quality of what's out there at the moment, it would be ideal if this whole album could be given a proper remastering treatment to clean up the sound.

Rare music from a rare artist.......2004-12-06

I first heard much of the music on this CD when I went to see Michael Parmenter's modern ballet production "The Race" in 1992 in Auckland, New Zealand. I enjoyed the music so much I bought a cassette of the music from the stand by the ticket office. Unfortunately, the cassette did not include all of the music from the production. Much later, I found the Downes' "Pavilion" CD (released 1993 on White Cloud) which contains alternate versions of some of the music from the cassette, plus some additional music that was not part of the original ballet. I have to confess that I prefer the versions from the orginal production. This "Rusted Wheel of Things" appears to be a re-release of the music from the Pavilion CD.

(Interestingly, his "Saltwater" CD contains one piece from the ballet production that is not on the cassette or this CD.)

How to describe this music? Well, it has celtic and ambient influences but overall I find it more like the soundtrack to an organic sci-fi story. Beautiful music. I wish Mr Downes would spend more time producing melodic music like this and less of the experimental "texture" music and video productions. Still, if this is all we get from him, the world is better off than if he had not written it, and I thank him for it.

British Library Ms Add.14905-Robert ap Huw (son of Hugh) Ms (1613), the 24 Measures of cerdd dant.
These 24 measures, studied by Welsh harpers, seem to be closely related to the Gaelic harp tradition of medieval Ireland and Scotland. Indeed some of the measures are today found in the classical music of the Great Highland Bagpipe or Piobaireachd (pibroch) and some of the melodies played by Bill Taylor do indeed resemble Piobaireachd. It has long been felt that this ancient form of pipe music may have emanated from harp music. It is indeed fortunate that the Scottish Highland Bagpipe has preserved these elements of ancient Gaelic music for us. Consequently, the music on the Two Worlds of The Welsh Harp is anything but weird, foreign or long forgotten as mentioned by earlier reviewers!
A word about the ms. itself, it is actually a music book and into it, Robert ap Haw copied his teacher's tunes or settings of tunes. He certainly was not the composer as indicated in "product details", page 2 of 6. His tunes are perhaps centuries older than his instructor.

Stunningly unique!.......2002-08-20

Being a student of harp for many years I was amazed to find a repertoire different from anything I had encountered before. It introduces listeners to a musical aesthetic long forgotten. Mr. Taylor has done a masterful job in presenting works from the Robert ap Huw MS. a work which has long challenged musicians and academicians alike. If you are interested in the harp this is a must-have. Masterful!

An incredible demonstration of the Welsh harp by Bill Taylor.......2001-02-20

I purchased this CD while researching the Welsh harp in history for a book I'm writing. Mr. Taylor's ability to play the harp in its original form and to play music from the time period brings this lost instrument to life and gives listeners a taste of what the music would have sounded like in medieval/renaissance Wales.

I highly recommend this CD to anyone who is looking for harp music with a historical touch.

weird but worth it.......2000-11-10

I'll tell you the truth...I bought this CD because I like Carol Thompson's stuff on Dorian. It is NOTHING like Mrs. Thompson's stuff. Mr. Taylor has made a very unique recording. This disc sounds weird-but in a very good way. It sounds foriegn at first and then grows on you. I recommend this stunningly singular recording. Get it and be blown away.
