It is not just the timbre of Norah Jones's voice that is mature beyond her 22 years. Her assured phrasing and precise time are more often found in older singers as well. She is instantly recognizable, blending shades of Billie Holiday and Nina Simone without sounding like anyone but herself. Any way you slice it, she is a singer to be reckoned with. Her readings of the Hank Williams classic "Cold Cold Heart" and Hoagy Carmichael's "The Nearness of You" alone are worth the price of the CD. Jones's own material, while not bad, pales a bit next to such masterpieces. They might have fared better had she and producer Arif Mardin opted for some livelier arrangements, taking better advantage of brilliant sidemen such as Bill Frisell, Kevin Breit, and Brian Blade; or if the tunes had simply been given less laconic performances. Jones has all the tools; what will come with experience and some careful listening to artists like J.J. Cale and Shirley Horn is the knack of remaining low-key without sounding sleepy--sometimes less is not, in fact, more. --Michael RossAmazon.com

The daughter of famed Indian sitarist Ravi Shankar, Jones grew up in Dallas with her mother, and her work is firmly rooted in the dry Texas soil. The youngest in this survey (she was born in 1979), Jones burst on the scene in 2002 with this debut album of nine original songs plus a handful of country and pop standards. Renowned for her sweet and soulful set of pipes, Jones has often been compared to Billie Holiday. There's also a touch of Roberta Flack and Emmylou Harris in there.
Come Away with Me is an honest-to-goodness country-blues recording that you can sit back with on the front porch rocker on a brisk autumn afternoon. Sort of like an early James Taylor, Jones mixes a little bit of country, folk, and soul into a collection that's the perfect antidote to today's insincere fare. The public must have sensed the same thing, because it bought this CD in boxcar loads, and in 2003 Jones walked away with eight Grammies, including album of the year and best new artist.
The title track, written by Jones, is the first new song I've heard in a long time that's utterly believable. "Come away with me and I'll never stop loving you," she begs, and it's as though she's singing it to you, personally. To Hank Williams's "Cold Cold Heart" she brings an R & B feel, petitioning in anguish to her lover man to come back, body and soul. "I've Got to See You Again" is an exquisite modern torch song in the same vein, while "One Flight Down" is an upbeat tune with chord progressions right out of Paul McCartney's Wings songs, like "Carry That Load." She ends with Hoagy Carmichael's "The Nearness of You." Close your eyes, let Jones's words envelope you with their soulful caress, and you'll sense that she's a lot nearer than your living room speakers.

Norah Jones blew everybody away with her jazzy, country-tinged, Grammy-winning debut CD, Come Away with Me. On this recording, Jones doesn't mess with her trademark formula. Under Arif Mardin's cozy coproduction, Jones is supported by her writing partners, her Handsome Band, and some special guests (country legend Dolly Parton, Levon Helm and Garth Hudson of the Band, and jazz drummer Brian Blade, to name a few). Jones's Texas-twanged vocals and her sparse acoustic and electric Wurlitzer piano lines enliven the CD's 13 tracks, from the light and lively single "Sunrise" to Tom Waits's "The Long Way Home" and the bouncy duet with Parton, "Creepin' In." Jones's soul-baring piano/vocal rendition of Duke Ellington's "Melancholia," retitled "Don't Miss You at All," proves she's a true Blue Note artist with unlimited potential. --Eugene Holley Jr.Amazon.com

A 20-track collection from the Reprise years that tries to cover too much ground. Very Good Years sweeps from the early 1960s to 1979's "New York New York," focusing on the most obvious Sinatra standards. The watchword here isn't art but populism. That's not a problem, really--but it means that serious fans (or those aspiring to be) will be better served elsewhere. It would be a fine introduction for the casual music lover, but so would any decent collection. For a compact Reprise-era sampler, try either this one or something from the Greatest Hits series. --Gavin McNettCustomer Reviews:
Classic Sinatra.......2007-06-14
Best of the Best.......2007-05-29
Let's be Frank about This.....................2007-05-16
This man is an absolutely incredible and astounding vocalist. Perhaps, one of the very best in the 20th century. You just have to listen to him, the cool smooth sometimes swingin', sometimes the serious and somber timbre of his vocals. What makes him so special anyway? It's how he phrases the lyrics, how his soft blanket of enunciation and knowing the right emphasis to use creates a very high standard that others hope to achieve. It is hard to define Sinatra so that you'll understand. But, if you're not too familiar with him, then this c.d. will help make it clear. It's everything: his vocals, the band sound, the arrangements. This is so fine- and so very classic and quality. Let's pour a drink, relax, and listen to Sinatra. So easy and wonderful on the ears.
Of course, as you would expect, this C.D. is filled with songs by the greatest songwriters of all time. Cole Porter,Johnny Mercer, Rodgers, Cahn-VanHeusen, Sondheim. We have exceptional compositions here. Plus Frank's later hits, "Strangers In the Night", "Summer Wind", "My Way", "New York, New York". The c.d. is a joy with great renditions by Frank. I especially like "The Best is Yet to Come" with Count Basie and his Orchestra. So cool, so jazzy, so Frank.
This is a great starting point by merely scratches the surface of his excellence. I suggest getting the box set of "The Capitol Years". That is his essential classic phase with arrangements by Nelson Riddle. You just can't get any finer music. Take my word. And even then, there is much more about him to discover. The best IS yet to come.
In conclusion, your Metamorpho, from time to time, needs to forget the rat race out there. Frank is a refreshing oasis of sound in sometimes a desolate music scene. He will always be this - for the ages. His legacy is cemented and will always be the best as more generations discover him.
Jazzy, suave, essential - this is Sinatra.
Very high marks for this one.
Now you must excuse me- Frank calls and a martini awaits me.

When Jimmy Buffett eventually becomes the subject of a college course--and given his enduring popularity as a singer-songwriter and author, you know he will someday--here's what'll be on the final exam. Boats, Beaches, Bars & Ballads is so named because the four-CD collection divides Buffett's collected works among those categories, giving each disc a theme. From early classics such as "Biloxi" and "Come Monday" to more recent fare known only by the Parrothead cognoscenti, this set is the perfect accompaniment to a cool drink and a hammock on a summer afternoon. What kind of cool drink? Well, that'll be on the final, too. --Daniel DurchholzCustomer Reviews:

Johnny Depp and director Gore Verbinski hatched the idea for Rogue's Gallery while filming "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest"--that idea being to cast genteel rock superstars like Bono, Lou Reed, Bryan Ferry, Andre Corr, and Sting to reinterpret gritty seafaring standards for an exhaustive 43-track double-disc set produced by Hal Wilner. Throw in a bunch of credible folk stars (Loudon Wainwright III, Richard Thompson), their offspring (Rufus, Teddy) and a string of other curious characters (Jarvis Cocker, Antony) and what results is one of the strangest compilations in recent memory, if not exactly the most historically authentic or, well, digestible. Nick Cave embraces the role just a little too hard on "Fire Down Below," while Ferry can't help but sound like he's singing for the cast of "The Love Boat," but cut through the chaff and there is some real bootie here: Bono's "Dying Sailor to His Shipmates," Jolie Holland's "The Grey Funnel Line" and "Boney" by a mysterious tramp called Jack Sh**, which must be some kind of anagram for Johnny Depp. --Aidin VaziriAlbum Description
While working on the two "Pirates Of The Carribean" films, Johnny Depp and director Gore Verbinski became fascinated with the lore and fable of the pirates and sailors who ran the high seas. Enter legendary producer Hal Wilner, who brings his knack for matching maverick musicians with extraordinary material. Artists on this double disc set include Bono, Sting, Nick Cave, Bryan Ferry, Lou Reed, Richard Thompson, Lucinda Williams, Jarvis Cocker of Pulp, and many more. "Rogue's Gallery" offers a look at the hardships, the horrors, the lusts and lurid depths, and the crystal beauty that led men to the sea in ships for hundreds of years.Customer Reviews:
Fun--but not great.......2007-07-03
I won't belabor the song content or the production value. I think the most notable reviews have got that down pat, although I'm not marking down as far as they have because I'm giving points for originality being a fan of Spike Jones and some other truly demented people.
One thing to note: this is not a CD you'd buy if you were looking for something to amuse your kids. Some of the content is very bawdy and Mom and Dad would have some serious 'splaining to do to the little pirates. There's both some language and some situations that are more twisted than a Hangman's knot.
aaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrghhhhhhhhhhhhh!.......2007-06-09
Disappointment would be an understatement.......2007-06-04
Hal Wilner should stick to whatever genre it is that made him know enough to be approached by labels, because he clearly has no understanding, and less enthusiasm for *this* genre.
If you love lively music from the maritime era, you can only be bitterly disappointed by this collection. Out of 43 tracks, I found 15 that were salvageable. Sort of.
I've already tossed this onto the pile to go to the resale shop. It wasn't worthy the cost of shipping.
Zzz..........2007-04-04
I appreciate what was attempted here (contemporary artists paying homage to sea chanteys in the spirit of our romanticized version of the pirate era) but it just doesn't really work. The effect is similar to what would be achieved if the London Philharmonic Orchestra attempted to play rap "music" with Luciano Pavarotti rhymin' while flashing gang signs.
another set of hopes are smashed.......2007-03-29
It is VERY sad that these same titles, could not have been produced for quality. They sound like a nightmare.

English singer-pianist Jamie Cullum comes into view as an already heralded jazz-pop artist, signed to a million-pound contract and riding a CD that's already registered double platinum in the UK. The "jazz" label doesn't hang that comfortably on the 24-year-old Cullum--he's more in the mold of polished lounge swingers like Bobby Darin and Buddy Greco and has more in common with, say, Billy Joel (definitely a "New York State of Mind") than any traditional jazz artist you might mention. An ironist who covers both Cole Porter and Radiohead, he's aware of the contradictions that he embodies. Those contradictions drive the title track as Cullum's lyrics plumb "twentysomething" uncertainties ("Maybe move back home and pay off my loans/Working nine to five answering phones") while moving to a mock-primitive chanted riff that's pure '50s hip. What surprises most is Cullum's emotional and musical range, and the way he combines methods to create depth and complexity. "Blame it on My Youth" is delivered with the heartfelt delicacy of Chet Baker, while his reading of "The Wind Cries Mary" suggests that Jimi Hendrix might have just about invented smooth jazz. "I Could Have Danced All Night" explodes with playful energy and creativity, launched with scat singing over a rhythm pounded out on drums and piano wood. Cullum has energy and talent to burn, plus a postmodern knack for layering idioms that signals a welcome direction for jazz-pop. As "Lover, You Should've Come Over" attests, he can also project an emotional intensity that breaks through the clever arrangements. --Stuart BroomerCustomer Reviews:

Buy a different Buble CD!.......2007-05-23
Here's what Buble said about this fiasco: "Totally Buble" is not an album that I wanted to be released. They were songs I recorded for a film called "Totally Blonde" many years ago before I was signed to 143/Reprise Records. The decision to release it as an album was made by the film's producer, and I had no control over stopping him.
Also note that Buble's other tunes are great for swing dancing. These songs still work, but they are not nearly as much fun. Listen to the real Buble who can afford to produce good music, not the one who had to record soundtracks for lame movies to earn a living.
Oh yeah, the whole album seems to be only about 12 minutes long!!! The songs sound more like sample clips! I only recommend this CD for the hard-core fan who already owns every other recording Michael Buble has ever made. Perhaps these recordings would have turned out better without the obnoxious female jazz singers in the background. I hope this was informative.

Fits the Mood of the Show.......2007-06-16
Aye, the opening song (the best cut) is WAY too short: I thought like the Geico theme song, "Remind Me," there was surely a longer version. Still even at just over a minute, it's worth buying. Very moody, but very worth listening to!
Not bad for a TV soundtrack.......2007-06-02
About all that really stood out for me was the theme song, #1 "A Place in Time" (really the only reason I even bought the CD) and I think I remember #11 "Salvation" being used at some point. The rest of the selections don't mean much to me but they're a good fit and if you like one you'll probably like most of the rest. The worst piece was #12, the instrumental version of the theme- instrumental adaptations rarely work well and this was no exception.
Another great TV soundtrack........2007-05-10
1) A place in time : apparently the show's theme,nice but a little too short. 4/5
2) This is your life : oh my god! masterpiece! love the band and this one is one of their best by far. 5/5
3) falling by the wayside : really good follow up to this is your life. 5/5
4) into the fire : the same .5/5
5) worry about you : a changing a tone but for the best. It's one of my favorite band and fav song. 5/5
6) how do you say goodbye? : on the verge of into the fire and falling by the wayside. 4,5/5
7) she will be loved : masterpiece but doesn't fit at all with the rest of the CD exept maybe the newt one,shy baby. 5/5
8) shy baby : great discovery on the CD and a great song with a beautiful voice, all little folk to chill. 5/5
9) do the buildings and cops make you smile?: normal follow up to the rest of the songs. 5/5
10) cheek to cheek: same as she will be loved exept that we can't relate it to any other song from the CD.4/5
11) salvation : not a fan of the show so don't really care about this one but it's nice, way to short but nice. 3/5
12) a place in time: another score which is a remix of the theme song.Should have been sang. 3/5
If you're a fan of the show,well buy it cause it's really good,if not,buy it anyway,it's a really good CD,trust me.
