5 out of 5 stars Best of the Goos.......2007-02-28

(First of all, I think the reviewer below me has this album confused with another one.)

I don't mind the Goo Goo Dolls today, but they're just another mainstream band compared to this album. Hold Me Up captrued the band at a transition between the extremely thrashy punk-inspired music of Jed and First Release and the more melodious, radio-friendly kind of music they would play from Superstar Car Wash on. This was the best time of their career. Their songs are catchy here, and yet they're still not watered down. Both Robby and John are at their best. Unlike Dizzy Up the Girl and all of their albums since, this doesn't sound like a Goo Goo Dolls who are yearning to play something more dynamic. This sounds like a Goo Goo Dolls who know exactly what it is they want to do, and they do exactly that. This album was a part of my childhood. I listened to this album at the same time as Dizzy Up the Girl. The difference is that Dizzy Up the Girl never stood the test of time. This album did.

I just wrote this on the spur of the moment. Perhaps later, I'll write a better review. In the meantime, just know that people who consider themselves fans of the Goo Goo Dolls because of their radio hits should educate themselves, and this should be their first album.

Recommended songs: ALL of them.

2 out of 5 stars This is Where The G.G.D.'s Sold Out .......2007-02-07

As the title states, this was the end of the line for the goo's being a unique, passionate, relevant indie/punk band. The style, sound, and songwriting on here is a complete 180 from their first 2 records. There are a few decent ones, that is why I gave it a '2'. Unfortunately most of it veers towards the overrated watered down mainstream pop crap they put out to the present and the same type of stuff you heard on the radio over and over and over. They were still on Metal Blade for this release but you wouldn't know it. Johhny took over most of the songwriting and singing duties and it shows. From this record on, the material was saturated with overly cheesy ballads, ala Johnny. It is what made them successful, but in alienated me and other hard core fans who knew this was not the same band that used to make music from the heart. Each release after this got worse and worse, even though some of 'dizzy...' was decent like this. Please do not buy anything of the g.g.d;s after "jed" as it is just pathetic how fast this band turned into a made for aor radio sellout so quickly.

3 out of 5 stars Goo Finally Holds Up.......2006-08-03

It was in 1990, when the rock group Goo Goo Dolls released their third album: HOLD ME UP. The record was intriguing. Mainly for the fact that the band was still in their experimental sound stage, and the music they produced was fairly decent. Johnny Rzeznik was definately the leader of the group. This is quite apparent with his fast paced scale based guitar licks and inversions of his chords. His performance was still in a progression, for Rzenzik still had to learn how to keep in time with his other band members. The rest of the band members needed work in this aspect of their musical performance as well. There are points within the songs that the players loose time and the piece slows or rushes. There are other times when the players get off in the beats within their rhythms they are suppose to perform. What stands out about this record is; Goo Goo Dolls still have their originality and are obviously having fun experimenting within their genre. Rzeznik's lyrics like always, are an admirable trait, and fit well with the pieces' style that the band performs. HOLD ME UP is classic Goo Goo Dolls sound, the style the band performed before hitting the Mainstream. It is a record to give attention to by Goo Goo Dolls fans because this is the album that the band's sound had progressed further than just hard, grudgy, and wailing rock.

Stand out tracks include:
"Laughing"
"Just the Way You Are"
"There You Are"
"Hey"
"A Million Miles Away"

3 out of 5 stars Vintage Goo is Gritty Good-3.5 Stars.......2006-07-14

This is the album that Johnny referred to as their "real" first album. It's an enjoyable listen if like a more garage/jangle/rock sound. I personally enjoyed it when I first bought it back in 1999 and still listen it to it today because of surprisingly, its simplicity. There are no violins, piano, or other additional instruments in most of the songs. It's just guitar, bass, and drums. The song writing and delivery might not be as good as Superstar Car Wash or A Boy Named Goo but the rawness and lack of slickness adds to its blemished appeal. Surprisingly, Robby's voice sounds much better on this album than Dizzy Up The Girl (DUTG) and latter albums because his raspy voice compliments the muddy sounding guitar, bass, and drums.

Some fans whose first exposure to the Goo Goo Dolls is DUTG, Gutterflower, or (shivers) Let Love In might not enjoy this album because of its lack of ballads like Iris and it's harder sound. But longtime fans who longingly wish the Goos will get back to their Buffalo rocking roots will treasure it.

4 out of 5 stars Just Gives You GOOS Bumps LOL........2005-10-26

Hey everyone at amazon.com. The Goo Goo Dolls are one of the best bands in the world any album of theres is a plus to your cd collection. Anyway Hold Me Up is one of there earlier albums that still retains there orignal hardcore punk sound from the 80's. This is a big part of the goo goo dolls as some of the tracks verge on what you here now on albums like Dizzy Up The Girl & Gutterflower. Back to the point the best track on this album are 2. Just The Way You Are, 4. There You are. But in fareness the stand out track on this must have album is Two Days In February. In conclusion i hate the people that say goo goo dolls older albums are there best as this is not true there music was good back then but it has evolved so much now the "Dizzy Up The Girl" and the "Gutterflower" albums are there best to date and the cover version of Supertramps "Give A Little Bit" is also cool. Don't hate evolotion!!!!

3 out of 5 stars spirituals lite.......2007-06-05

Yes, they can sing. But can they sing spirituals? Yes. But do I want to hear them sing spirituals? NO. White people singing spirituals is boring and tired.

5 out of 5 stars Elijah Rock.......2007-02-03

If you like sacred acapella, you're bound to like "Go Down, Moses," performed by Chicago Acapella. This group does such a fantastic job of achieving a clean, beautiful blended sound. And frankly, I don't care if they are mostly white or if their performance is not "authentic." It sounds heavenly, and that's all that matters as far as I'm concerned.

My favorite track on this CD is "Elijah Rock." Although the composer is listed as "anonymous," the arrangement performed is actually that of the late Moses Hogan. I have yet to come across a recorded performance of Hogan's "Elijah Rock" that does as much justice to the piece as Chicago Acapella's. Their sound, blend, dynamics, pitch, rhythm- everything you need in a choral performance- is spot on here. All of the other recordings of "Elijah Rock" I've listened to do 1 of 2 things (if not both) very quickly- rush the tempo or go flat. Chicago Acapella does neither. In addition, the sound editing and engineering are as good as one could expect. By the way, this is available on iTunes for $9.99, with individual songs for sale. I only bought 2 songs on this CD: "Roll Jordan" and "Elijah Rock." Not that the other songs are bad, they're all well-performed, but these 2, especially "Elijah Rock," are the ones that I can listen to over and over again and never get tired of.

3 out of 5 stars Pretenders.......2003-11-27

You wont find a picture of the singers for this cd on the cover. I was miffed when I found out they are mostly all white. You couldn't tell from the name of the group, or the politically correct use of the term African American instead of negro. I was just hoping for the kind of nuance you hear in African American church choirs. This choir mimics the Negro spiritual ok, but you can't help but wonder how much better it would be if they used actual African American singers and direction. The real thing is always better than the pretender. Nevertheless the voices are proffessional so I did get something out of it.

5 out of 5 stars It's a wow!.......2001-11-17

We've all heard "Go down Moses"...at least we think we have. This NEW version brings NEW beauty to an ancient favorite. The arrangement is superb. The voices are superb. The effect is superb. An amazing and moving experience.

If you've never heard Chicago a cappella, this would be a wonderful first exposure to a group so musical, so diverse, so entertaining that you'll wish to revisit it often.

5 out of 5 stars Soulful and moving.......2001-08-07

What great ensemble! Whether you love spirituals or not, this recording is sure to impress you with the amazing vocals. Each performer brings out their own personality, but also blends into a unified whole. And the arrangements are a lot of fun!

Having earned his composing stripes after the 1960s, John Adams had the pioneering work of Steve Reich, Philip Glass, and Terry Riley close at hand as he ventured into his trade. And, while minimalism's historical continuum helps place Adams, he used Reich, Glass, and Riley (among others) only as a starting point. And here's proof: a 10-CD retrospective of nearly all Adams's recorded compositions on Nonesuch Records, the label that also issued Steve Reich 1965-1995 and Kronos Quartet: 25 Years. Adams's Harmonium, a choral work of startling energy and effervescence, appears here in a new recording, as do distillations of both The Death of Klinghoffer and Nixon in China, two path-clearing operas. Over the span of a career covered by Earbox, Adams has returned minimalism to traditional instrumental ensembles as well as to projects that at once advanced a political commentary and took that commentary back to orchestral audiences. And so, in far less time than his predecessors, Adams created works that now play like standard repertoire pieces: The Wound Dresser and Shaker Loops and the Violin Concerto--all of them are here. What these works demonstrate is a fierce creativity on the one hand and perhaps a hunger for commercial advances on the other. Adams may at times be a bustling free thinker, but he sounds ever conscious of what audiences are listening to. As for the works themselves, they remain every bit as daunting as when written.

Some may object to particular selections. I Was Looking at the Ceiling and Then I Saw the Sky, for example, hardly ranks with Adams's best work. But this box isn't a mere best-of; it's an almost-all-of. At times terrifically American--especially in the news-aware operas and their narrative pragmatism--Adams well deserves a major box set, and its coverage is appropriate to his varied, stylistically diverse output. As with any large-scale retrospective, Earbox--which fairly bristles with Adams's new composition, Slonimsky's Earbox--has spots where fans might balk at the quality of the composer's writing. But it's got a fantastic accompanying booklet along with its many hours of inarguably modern and thoroughly listener-friendly music. --Andrew Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars Moved to tears.......2004-03-18

Never before in my life was i moved so intensely and directly by classical music. I put the first cd in my player and a few minutes later tears are flowing. I find myself dancing and moving to a rythm i already seem to know. Wow, i just have to share that.

5 out of 5 stars Nonesuch delivers.Again.......2002-11-27

John adams is one of the most popular living composers of"modern" classical music[I believe the cutoff point, though arbitrary is usually WWII}.I came to him late, through my husband. Modersn classical music , I said? What the hell is that?My husband kept playing bits and pieces of adams for me, and more and more i found myself amazed. and swayed. His operas have been groundbreaking{Nixon in China} controversial{Death Of klinghoffer},his compostions sublimely beautiful{shaker Loops or harmonium].HIS STATURE IS WORTHY THEN OF SUCH A MONUMENTAL CAREER SPANNING BOX SET.This 10 disc set[great value, again from NONESUCH}encompasses Adams' entire career, and though there are some misses here{I was looking at the ceiling and then i saw the sky doesnt quite fit},it is still magnificent. the Highlights are ,{for me} the Wound Dresser, Chamber symphony,Violin Concerto, of course, Shaker Loops and Harmonuim are wonderful. The true jewels here are Nixon in China, the Chairman dances and the Death of Klinghoffer, which is simply a masterpiece. The set comes with a wonderful book, which contains essay's by Robert Hurwitz {An Uncommon Man}renaud Machart[John adams as seen from europe} and Essays before an earbox by Adams himself.A Chronology and dicography are included. A wonderful study of an American original, worth the investment, Highly highly recommended

4 out of 5 stars harmonia in excelsis.......2001-11-12

I must agree with Mr. Bartlett, particularly with regard to "Ceiling." It may well be because his Violin Concerto and Harmonielehre are so powerful. 4.5 stars.
Interesting, and likely intentional, is that two names in the extensive liner book fail to mention two great and glaringly obvious precursors: Carl Orff and Raymond Scott. Without "Carmina Burana," there would be no "Harmonium." Orff has his mark all over Adams's gifted and epic compositions. Similarly, though there are glib references to "cartoon music," the polymath engineer/musician Scott is a seminal figure in American music, and casts a large shadow over the witty juxtapositions and sense of play one loves in Adams's work. In all, an excellent career overview.

5 out of 5 stars Our greatest living composer.......2001-07-22

As a composer, I'm staggered that anyone could fail to be gripped by this music.

That anyone can use the words "spoiled, overrated" amazes me. I emphatically disagree with "A music fan"'s review.

I don't think it's "mind-numbing"; I think it's spiritual and exciting. To me it's the most substantial music being created in our times.

I'm really sorry that anyone could fail to enjoy it, and really recommend others to listen for themselves.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful CD.......2000-04-02

5 out of 5 stars This Is The Good Stuff!.......2006-01-10

I got this CD from my brother and listened to it while driving 5 hours on the interstate hi-way and thourouly enjoyed every track. Joe has a very smooth style that draws you into the music. It caresses your senses and makes you want to do some toe tappin'. There are not many "blind" keyboard musicians around with a "Ramsey Lewis-esq" style anymore that put heart & soul into the music. Keep it up Joe. This is the good stuff, not too pushy, not too forcefull, just smooooooth brothers & sisters of the jazz persuasion.

1 out of 5 stars Why so much use of organ? Aaghh!!!!!!.......2005-10-12

Joe has a consistent smooth jazz style which has made all of his albums up 'til now, absolutely essential. But, i feel i should say i'm personally dissapointed with this project. The background use of organ and scatty use of organ is too prominent and i for one, absolutely hate the organ sound. (IT MAKES ME CRINGE! AAGHH!) It belongs in a church and should stay in a church and not spoil smooth jazz grooves. If Joe had not used any organ and it's definately not needed, this album would've had 5 stars! This album does has the odd moment, but all i could hear was dreaded organ on every track which spoiled the enjoyment of joe's keyboard. So, this is a big dissapointment for me. If you are a Joe Mcbride fan, i recommend you listen to this album before you buy. If you happen to love organ, you will adore this CD.

This complete 12-disc survey of The Psalms of David from St. Paul's Cathedral is both a remarkable historical record of Anglican chant at its finest and an astonishing musical experience. Contained here are all 150 psalms in their traditional English garb from the 1549 Book of Common Prayer, with revised or entirely new musical settings as published in The New St. Paul's Cathedral Psalter, edited by the choir's musical director John Scott, itself a revision of the 1875 Cathedral Psalter. As such, these recordings represent the very backbone of the Anglican liturgy, but even a casual listener will be in no doubt that they also offer music that is both contemplative and richly varied when removed from its liturgical context.

The art of "pointing"--or setting--psalm texts has been essayed by many English composers, from William Croft through the Wesleys and William Boyce in earlier times to the great flowering in the late 19th century under Stainer and Barnby, with further contributions from Parry, Stanford, Elgar, Howells, and a host of choirmasters and organists, including Sir David Willcocks and John Scott himself. All are represented here. Recorded throughout in the vast acoustic of their cathedral, the St. Paul's choristers enunciate the words precisely, backed by inventive though unobtrusive organ accompaniment. Taken individually, it's possible to isolate moments when the choir seem to drag their feet or fail to give due weight to the words (Psalm 125, "They that put their trust in the Lord," seems far too subdued, for example), and the massive Psalm 119 is awkwardly split across discs 10 and 11, but overall this set is nothing less than a document of invaluable cultural and musical significance. --Mark Walker

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Recordings.......2007-06-11

In our view the changes in pointing, and excellent selection of chants, give deeper meanings to the Psalms than those achieved in the "standard?" Parish Psalter.

We found great Spirituality and a wonderful sense of Worship whilst listening to this set. This is often sacrificed for brilliance of musical performance in other recordings.

Unfortunately the "St.Paul's Psalter" is not available (June 2007) but we are told that a new print run may happen within 12 months. This would be a most valuable companion to the recordings when and if it becomes available.

4 out of 5 stars A- for effort.......2006-02-23

This grand undertaking deserves high praise, and I'm struck, listening to chant after chant, how much Anglican chant as it used to be until the changes of the 70s was one of the great Victorian contributions to English life and art. For anyone who wants to hear almost the entire repertoire of Anglican chant deployed in singing the whole book of Psalms, this is an unrivalled source. It is wonderful, too, to hear the Coverdale translation: you realize what the churches have lost by abandoning the proper & regular singing of the Psalms. So one is immensely grateful to Hyperion for putting out this recording. It's not perfect, though.

The rhythmic pacing, though a little slow for my taste, is steady and sensitive, the diction clear, and the organ accompaniment superb (Providing an expressive accompaniment to a choir singing in 4-part free rhythm, and improvising descants to the melody at the same time, isn't easy). And of course there's the cavernous acoustic of St. Paul's, very impressive in the more thunderous psalms. Unfortunately, though, the "forward" style favored for the St. Paul's boys produces a sound that's unpleasantly chesty in the lower registers and reedy in the higher ones. The poorly integrated choral sound caused by this kind of voice-production can be downright unpleasant for anyone used to, or trained in, the classic English choral style. In fact, one has to wonder why this choir was chosen for such a huge project: even allowing for the near-universal decline in standards of vocal training for boys in England, better sounds than this can still be heard.

5 out of 5 stars What can you say?.......2003-01-03

I almost hate to criticize this terrific thing. After all, where else can you get all 150 Psalms in a single collection sung by one of the world's great choirs?

How much do I like it? I bought it *twice*. I originally bought all the CDs separately, before they came out with a single boxed set. They were stolen from my car (and, God willing, maybe they converted some poor thief to Anglican Cathedral Music and got him into church). After they were stolen, I immediately bought them again.

One of the great pleasures of life is listening to the Morning and Evening Psalms while driving to and from work, and making listening a regular feature of Morning and Evening Prayer.

So what's the criticism? The sound is a bit muddy, so the words can be rather difficult to understand without reading along (which is a real problem when driving), and personally, I prefer the Psalter from the 1979 BCP instead of the old one, from the Great Bible. But that's unreasonable. They ARE a British choir after all. Those are the only criticisms.

Anyhow, if you have a taste for choral cathedral music, this is genuinely indispensible. St. Paul's has given the world a great blessing.

This CD is a rare treat for Susan Hayward fans - a chance to hear her do her own singing in the film "I'll Cry Tomorrow" based on the story of Lillian Roth, who battled alcoholism in her life. The sound quality is EXCELLENT and the CD includes extensive notes, and even includes unused tracks, such as the vocal efforts of studio vocalist Sandy Ellis, who was originally going to dub for Hayward. Many people are not aware that the real Lillian Roth was disapointed that her own voice tracks were not used for the film. But, Hayward surprised everyone with her surprisingly goodvocal range. The background music is exceptionally fineas well, and is all included here. This CD is a must-have for Susan Hayward fans - and lovers of fine film score music as well.

i didn't expect much of this album since i knew almost nothing about it before buying, but it turned out to be a great mixture of funky house (or housy funk ...) with a little touch of disco (just in the amount that won't make it a stupid retro album). very recommended if you'r looking for a house album that is neither too superficial nor too "hardcore".
