5 out of 5 stars One Great CD.......2006-11-06

A couple years ago I heard the song In the Shadows and I loved it. I was disappointed when they never had any other songs that I know of in the U.S. About a year later I saw their CD Dead Letters at a used CD store and thought it was worth the risk. I loved that CD and it was well worth the $4.00 I paid. When I found out they where releasing a new CD I was very exited. Their new CD is great and I love the included bonus tracks. I bought this CD full price and it was still worth it. The CD is so good it is hard for me to choose one good song. I highly recommend this CD for any fan of The Rasmus or any other bands smiler like A.F.I or H.I.M.

If you're an American, most people you know have never heard of The Rasmus. If you're reading this, there is a good chance that you are only hearing of them for the first time. Upon listening to this album, as well as their 2003 release Dead Letters, 2001's Into, and numerous tracks from their other CD's, dating back to 1996, the first sentence of this paragraph is going to seem utterly ridiculous.

Remember when rock used to be catchy? Remember when singers sang, instead of growled and belched, even in hard music? Do you miss hard rock songs that you can't help but sing along with? Welcome to The Rasmus. Pick up this CD, as well as their previous two (at the very least), and prepare to be amazed. Each CD these guys seems like a best-of collection. Each song sounds like it could be - and should be - a hit.

Lead singer Lari has a unique voice, as scratchy and full of character as it is angelic. He doesn't just sing the melody, he hits the notes. He must have perfect pitch. Nobody else sings like this. Nobody else could. Not in rock & roll, anyway. Mechanical precision, yet dripping with soul. Even if the songs sucked, you'd owe it to yourself to check out this guy's singing.

But the music doesn't suck. While definitely rock 'n roll, it eschews the typical blues based progressions of rock & metal for classical structures and melodies - and not always minor key arrangements either. These guys are fun. And serious. This isn't cock rock, nor is it butt rock. This is something new. This is the kind of rock you turn up to 11 on the car stereo, while at the same time, you can totally imagine a classical arrangement of each song, with strings replacing the crashing guitars and impassioned vocals. In fact, it would be damn good classical music.

The best part about discovering the Rasmus at this very point in history, is that they have an excellent back catalog. There is nothing like finding a band that, somehow, has escaped your attention for a decade, and used their time spent in obscurity (to you, at least) creating a discography that you eventually come to fall in love with.

Early material from The Rasmus had a ska sound, while their more recent stuff takes on a harder rocking, pop-metal sound that showcases their excellent sense of melody, song structure, variety, and lyrical depth. Fans of H.I.M., 69 Eyes, Lacuna Coil, and other pop-goth bands probably already know about The Rasmus. If not, check them out ASAP! And if that list of bands didn't look familiar to you, you've got at least 4 new favorite bands (including The Rasmus) to check out.

5 out of 5 stars The Rasmus ROCKS!!.......2006-10-19

I not only own the US release of HFTS, I also own an import copy, if that tells you how great this CD is!
It's very rare that the US is treated to extra tracks that Europe and Japan are not, in fact, this is the only time I've ever heard of/seen it happen!
The music on this CD is nothing less than phenomenal. The balance between heavier rock songs and melodic ballads is just about perfect, my favorite so far being "Shot" and "Keep Your Heart Broken"... and the lead singer's (Lauri Ylönen) voice draws you in and traps you in a different world. It seems like he's singing only to you.
I highly recommend this CD (and any of their previous albums)... and if you don't buy it, you'll never know what you're missing!!

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite CDs of all time!.......2006-10-19

This cd is a MUST have! I've been a fan of the band for 3 years, and I think that this cd is the best one that they have. It's combination of hard rock and melodic vocals make this one that you can play over and over.

5 out of 5 stars BUY THIS CD TODAY!!.......2006-10-14

The Rasmus - The most talented band there is, unique sound, overall great music. My husband is from Finland and I only started listening to The Rasmus since August this year after meeting them on a plane from Paris to Helsinki. They are the most laid back group of guys, so down to earth, and their nice character makes them so great by itself! But seriously, about the CD - you can't have a favorite song on here without picking ALL of them. I have the European release of this CD and the US release by far kicks its [...]! Buy this CD, you won't be sorry, it'll be the best [...] you've ever spent!!

Soprano Dawn Upshaw's programs are always interesting, and this one's a beauty: one of Bach's most heartfelt cantatas flanked by songs and arias of Purcell. For the most part, she's in excellent voice, but with the tics that make some demur from enthusiasm: occasional swooping, thinning of the voice in the upper regions, lapses into a "Broadway" type of vocalism, and diction problems. The latter, oddly enough, are as present in Purcell's English as in Bach's German, as in the way Upshaw lands heavily on the r with a broad American accent rather than the lightly rolled r we're used to in performances of period English music. There's also some broad word-painting in the Bach, whose text, charting the soul's journey from sin to redemption, really needs no extra emoting. That said, Upshaw's fans will love this disc, and even those who prefer a different approach will enjoy it. Accompaniments are excellent: a continuo team in the Purcell, a small chamber group in the Bach. Outstanding sonics, too. --Dan Davis

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful, fervent Bach, but the Purcell songs are a bit prettified.......2006-08-24

Amazon's reviewer seems to have zoned out on how Dawn Upshaw pronounces words, missing most of the musical value here. Her singing of the Bach cantata, 'Mein Herze schwimmt in Blut,' is very moving. She is deeply involved, and her voice extracts the deep reverence and religious passion that makes this music so great. I'm not as convinced by the Purcell songs, however. Upshaw has chosen some of the most famous, and set against great singers like Battle, Baker, and Ferrier, her rendiitons seem a little shallow and prettified. She's considerably more tuned in to Bach, which is good enough to make this a memorable CD, if not her very best. Things would be much improved if the conducting by the (totally uncredited) conductor weren't so limp.

5 out of 5 stars Now that the Sun hath veil'd his light............2001-08-04

Some say angels are God's messangers. When angels communicate, surely they sound like Dawn Upshaw. Upshaw's beautiful soprano voice rises to the stars and floats back again as she sings the beautiful collection of arias and cantatas by Purcell and Bach contained in ANGELS HIDE THEIR FACES.

Shaw's interpretation of Purcell's 'How sweet it is to love' reminds me of the elation I first felt on realizing love exists. 'Lord what is a man' brings one back to earth with a lamentation about human frailty and the finiteness of human existence. "Rejoice, rejoice" sings the angel in 'Hark! How all things' with lyrics from 'The Fairy Queen' -- a text by E. Settle after Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream.'

Bach's cantatas fill the air as Upshaw sings arias in German (interpretations are provided in the text accompanying the CD). J.S. Bach's songs are clearly and beautifully articulated by Upshaw while in the backgound various wind and string instruments accompany her vocalizations. Many of Upshaw's vocalizations by Bach in German as well as the instrumentation (including viol consort) remind me of the arias from 'The Messiah' -- majestic albeit on a very human scale. For example, Aria #9 by Bach is comparable to "He shall lead his flock.." (although the latter was written for an alto voice).

The music in English by Purcell is a bit lighter. My favorite piece is 'An evening hymn' by Purcell which I would expect to hear near dusk in an English chapel. However, ANGELS HIDE THEIR FACES contains music you can play year round at any time of day.

5 out of 5 stars Picky reviewers.......2001-05-31

I've got a degree in musicology ( and am fluent in German as well), and for a while after total immersion in graduate school, found my listening enjoyment frustrated by the same pickiness that hampers your reviewer. Fortunately, that passed, and I'm now able to simply appreciate Dawn Upshaw's performance of the music we hear all too seldom. I hope that others will be able to participate in Upshaw's interpretation of the poetry behind the music, to think about the theological role of angels (not just pretty faces and feathery wings), to love this wonderful recording. We are indeed blessed that technology allows us to experience such music, such an artist.

5 out of 5 stars hark ! how well the lady sings.......2001-05-31

This is one of those little gems that becomes more appealing with each hearing. The Purcell pieces are sweet and lovely, but the Bach ! This Cantata is the glory of this CD. It's verses are of the deepest sorrow and repentance, woeful utterances for God's forgiveness, until the final aria, "How joyful is my heart since God is appeased". Dawn Upshaw's interpretation is beautiful. She captures the emotion, the longing, the spirituality and heart of the piece.

The musicians in the simple accompaniment are superb, and the entire package excellent...it was the cover art that first drew my attention to this CD...an unusual and moving painting by Hugo Simberg titled "Wounded Angel" from 1903. It also has the lovely added touch of being slip-cased, making it a perfect gift item for anyone who likes this type of music.

5 out of 5 stars Why hide from the sun when you sound this good?.......2006-11-13

As a fan of the Rasmus since their first American release (Dead Letters), I can say that after hearing their earlier stuff (Into, and Peep, not Playboys however), Hide From the Sun easily earns the title of "Best Rasmus Album" in my collection. Lauri's voice is top notch, the music is loud, every song sounds carefully written to perfection, and having five amazing bonus tracks (specifically the slow version of "Open my Eyes" and "Dancer in the Dark") doesn't hurt either. For me, this album's highlights are "Night After Night", "Immortal", "Sail Away", and "Last Generation". The only complaint I have about this album is, since "Don't Let Go" is the closing track, it fails to really take off (Despite the powerful chorus and amazing vocals by Lauri) and it feels incomplete by the end. The lyrics of the album all make sense when played over the music, and if I didn't know the Rasmus were Finnish, I would have never guessed English was not their first language. If you want to hear an album that should have won a grammy in 2005, then pick this one up.

4 out of 5 stars Four Fabulous Finns.......2006-05-31

After hearing “Sail Away” by this Finnish group, this album was a must-have for me. Fans of pop rock, goth and/or ‘80s “monster” rock will love this album, and I still can’t believe that it took me until album number six to find this group. (Their first album “Peep” was released in 1996.)

First single “No Fear” is a morbid little track which seems to be about someone dying, with lyrics like “Your final journey's just begun / your destiny chose the reaper”, but lead singer Lauri Johannes Ylönen’s haunting vocals make it well worth a listen. Second single “Sail Away” also seems to be about someone dying and/or leaving a loved one behind, while in the third single “Shot” he’s ready to die for the one he loves.

Changing from the somber theme just a bit, “Night After Night (Out of the Shadows)” is an excellent track with a catchy chorus, and is about salvation – “Guardian of my dreams / Watching me when I sleep / Like an angel you came / Every time when I screamed”

Other tracks to note are “Lucifer’s Angel”, “Last Generation” (song about a bright light vaporizing life on earth); “Dead Promises” (source of the album title); “Keep Your Heart Broken” (great chorus); and “Heart of Misery,” but they’re all pretty good.

Keep an eye out for The Rasmus when next you’re searching for great music from Europe. (4.5 stars)

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2006-04-03

A really amazing album every song is great but here's my song by song review

Shot: An obvious choice for third single and one of my favorites really romantic lyrics that really tell a story and amazingly electronic guitar riff.

Night After Night: A great song again an awesome guitar/bass blend. The lyrics are really gothy and dark " Every night I wake up crying cause I feel like dying" really well crafted pre-chorus also.

No Fear: Obviously the first single. I at first didn't like it much because it was to commercial and poppy but then i totally got into it. The lyrics are built upon a good idea but they are weak.

Lucifer's Angel: My personal favorite of the album, awesome guitar riff and the bass and drums also hold it up really good. The lyrics are also amazing and I wouldn't be surprised if some stupid orthodox Christian sued the Rasmus for this!

Last Generation: Amazing hard rock beggining and pretty catchy chorus but it drags on for a little to long. The "Dust replaced their souls part" is genius.

Dead Promises: Being a big fan of Apocaliptyca this song was an inmediate first listen for me. The cellos are really well arranged and fit in incredibly with the song also incredibly catchy chorus that really makes you think.

Inmortal: I read an interview with them and this seems to be Lauri's and also a lot of fan's favorite song. I don't necessarily agree with this though it is a good song. The chorus doesn't feel right to me for some reason but the lyrics and instrumentation are great.

Sail Away: The Rasmus were wise and chose this as their second single. Its a great ballad about death and leaving those you love behind. I love the violins in the bridge. Its a little too poppy but its still good.

Keep Your Heart Broken: A great and beautiful love song I especially liked it because I can relate to it but you don't care about that XD. Anyways the chorus is beatiful and catchy. Yet again a little too pop but still great. Probably the most beautiful lyrics on the album.

Heart of Misery: In my opinion the weakest song on the album. This song tries a little too hard to be a dramatic goth song. Its good but it doesn't meet the standart witht the rest of the album.

Don't Let Go: Really good ballad but it drags on a little too long. Long ballad. Having something like this at the end of the album is becoming sort of a cliche like Motion City Soundtrack's Hold me Down from Commit This to Memory the only album that I think overpowers this one in 2005 and also Blink-182's I'm Lost Without You from tehir amazing 2003 release. But no matter how much of a cliche this is its still an amazing song.

In short this album is probably one of the best albums of 2005 and it could be the best if it was a little longer.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best pop-metal bands since the '80s.......2006-03-31

Two years ago, Finland's The Rasmus took the world by storm. Their hit single, the disco-influenced "In the Shadows," was catchy enough to appeal to preteens, dark enough to draw metal-heads and gentle enough to make a dent in the Bryan Adams crowd.

Their latest release, "Hide from the Sun," for the most part stands by their winning formula with killer new songs and a few interesting twists.

Like "Dead Letters," "Hide from the Sun" is filled with dramatic pop-goth that resembles artists ranging from the Backstreet Boys to Bon Jovi to Nine Inch Nails. Also like "Dead Letters," Universal is promoting the new recording with an infectiously catchy first single, this time "No Fear" instead of "In the Shadows."

However, there are a few mild points of departure. Guitar riffs take center stage a little more frequently, such as on "Shot" and "Last Generation." And the upbeat ballad "Sail Away" loses The Rasmus' typical drama and grandeur in exchange for mindless, head-bobbing melodies.

While the rest of the album will not surprise stylistically, there is a wide array of incredible tracks. "Keep your Heart Broken" is a heart-wrenching love song, where "Immortal" has an emotional, head-banging chorus. "Don't Let Go" has Bryan Adams written all over it.

There is remarkably little one can say to criticize this record, but the exaggerated trauma of the lyrics can get a little annoying: "Every night I wake up crying `cause I feel like dying," singer Lauri Ylonen intones in "Night after Night (Out of the Shadows)."

Unfortunately, this CD has yet to see a U.S. release, but fans can pick up a copy online pretty reasonably.
