5 out of 5 stars Mrs Henderson Presents.......2007-05-16

A very enjoyable and at times funny movie. Judi Dench gives one of her best perfomances with excellent support from the other cast members. This is a movie one could watch several times and never tire of it. AAA+++

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely infectious!!!.......2007-03-28

From start to finish, MRS. HENDERSON PRESENTS is the finest collection of solid standards and George Fenton's own recreated time-period evocations, fully fleshed and skillfully performed and recorded. The talents of singer Will Young will not go unnoticed, especially in his heartbreaking rendition of ALL THE THINGS YOU ARE.Your toes will be tapping, your lips will be smiling and you will be glad that this soundtrack and wonderful film are yours! You will be transported to WW2 England and you will be humming these tunes day and night.

5 out of 5 stars A Creation and Recreation of Nostalgia.......2006-04-23

George Fenton has put together a musical score for the completely delightful MRS. HENDERSON PRESENTS that is a combination of original music deeply influenced by the time of the film (London during WW II) and some of the best 'old favorite songs' from that time. In the film the music is always present, whether in the performances on the Windmill Theater stage or in the lyricism of the acting by Judi Dench, Bob Hoskins and crew.

Fenton includes such terrific oldies as Johnny Mercer's 'Goody Goody', Charles Harris' 'After the Ball', Noel Gay's 'Letting in the Sunshine', Frank Loesser's 'Blue Nightfall', and Jerome Kern's 'All the things you are'. He segues these pieces with his own fine orchestrations and the result is a score that not only enhances the mood of the film, but one that stands alone as a recording. The various performers include Camille O'Sullivan, Charlene Ford, Ciaran Connolly, Elise Audeyev, Frances Garvey, Frank Lawson, Joseph McMurray, Kate Power, Matthew Hart, Melody Squire, Rachel Lawrence, Sir Thomas Allen!, Sophie Brown, The O'Brien Sisters, Vanessa Barmby, Vicki Davids, and Victoria Hay.

This is a recording to conjure up memories not only of a successful film but also of a time when music conveyed a lot of emotion during times of stress. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, April 06

5 out of 5 stars Mrs. Henderson Presents.......2006-03-24

Met ALL my expectations, having seen/loved the film - especially the orchestration, arrangements, and vocals. Sound quality superb.
I've played this CD for others - of all age groups - all agree it's a defininte winner.

4 out of 5 stars Upbeat and Fun!.......2006-03-22

Love this CD for the nostalgia! My favorite track is "All the Things You Are" by J.Kern and O.Hammerstein. This year's Oscar telecast produced a montage of film clips to this track including the last scene from "Mrs. Henderson Presents" and it was so emotion granting as is the song. Many of the other songs are from a time period right before WWII, but they are just fun and upbeat -- it was the depression, people needed to be uplifted with such such songs as "Letting in the Sunshine" and "Goody Goody." Judi Dench was asked by someone in the bleachers at the Oscars how it felt to be nominated this year for Mrs. Henderson, and she answered back, "just listen to the soundtrack darling!" How great is that???!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Start an art rock cult!.......2007-05-08

With "Frieze" Chris Letcher has finally released an album that gives him top billing. One wonders what took him so long. The co-founder of 90's band Urban Creep and "better half" of dark duo Van der Want/Letcher here presents 16 hypnotic, multi-layered tracks warranting a singular space in the pantheon of South African rock legends.
When I first knew Letcher as a student in the early 90s he was the archetypal "misfit with the Clark Kent eye-wear" - mysterious, awkward, humble, but leaking a subterranean luminescence that threatened something superhuman.
When he first started recording demos of his wistful ditties in his Bennett Street digs, he wouldn't let anyone outside his close circle know of their existence, let alone hear them.
By contrast, "Frieze" is the work of a confident (albeit fragile) artist, which cries out to be heard. Some are exquisitely funereal, shimmering wistfully in Pink Floydesque melancholia. Others are searing anthems of nerve-jangling menace.
Letcher's composing skills have been honed at the Trinity College of Music, London, where he graduated with a Master's in 2003. He is now studying towards a DMus in film music composition at the Royal College of Music and already has a string of film and documentary credits to his name.
All of this experience adds to the fun and mystery on "Frieze". His mastery of the synthesiser matches his virtuosity on piano, strings and brass, and he has even found a way to include instruments like "a steel beer keg" and Korean cymbals in his repertoire (on `If Nothing Else'). To add to the intrigue, listed sounds effects are "cups down fire escape at Westbury Court" (on `Sketch'), "heart and lung machine samples" (which gurgle and reverberate on `I was Awake I Could Not Move My Eyes'), and "sounds from the streets of Fordsburg, Johannesburg" (which roar and toot on `Robotic Soldiers').
Less satisfying are the lyrics which, while inventive and literate, are sometimes a tad overwrought.
But, some lines produce memorable mind-barbs: "All broken things dream of repair" on `Bad Shepherd'. And how is this for a transmogrification of George W. Bush's imperial lexicon (from `Sketch')?
"So I run from the light, from the thought I might not have done something right.
At the back of your head,
There's an open door,
There's the shock and awe."
Given past evidence of Letcher's work, I'm not shocked by "Frieze", but I am in awe. And it seems I'm not the only one. Lloyd Gedye of the Mail & Guardian describes him as "one of the greatest songwriters to grace the shores of this southern tip of Africa" and Jeremy Daniel of The Star says he's "truly world class". But, while "Frieze" was released in South Africa late last year, the honchos at national music retailers Musica haven't bothered to stock it, and apparently have no plans to do so.
Harrumph!
Wanna help start a new cult in art rock? Order Frieze from amazon.com, folks. Just don't tell Letcher - he's still a bit shy and not a great fan of obsessive veneration.

        2 out of 5 stars Um.......2005-05-29

This band from New York has an interesting sound that works marginally well. Carrie Bolger's breathy vocals on every track do get to be repetitive by the 4th cut, "Let's Not & Say We Did," I wished that the bad had several other vocalists and rotated them for more variety, particularly as Bolger sings, "Last night our love committed suicide." "State of the Nation" is interesting. It was previously recorded by Industry & Chinese Detectives, but certainly seems timely in the era of the Iraq war, although it's about a fight with the Aryan nation. The most successful track is the opener "Hand Stamp" that is a quirky 2-minute ditty about trying to get into a party. "X's & O's" is a nice acoustic folk track with some irony in the lyrics, "Today I tried to remember all the good things about you, but I haven't made a dent." Some of the tracks are pretty dreadful such as the unmusical "Cruzin" that would be a good soundtrack to a bout of nausea. Other tracks like "Priorities" & "Strange" are just weak and/or odd that weigh down the brighter moments of the set. "Say Um" is a cute track, "A screenwriter ought to take our dialogue & make a movie script loosely based on us. If I say I love you, but you're just having fun, Baby if you want to say um, say um." The set concludes with "Loan Sharks," a tune about having financial troubles. While there are some bright moments on the CD, they are overpowered by the dreadful and near-abominable ones along with Bolger's very repetitive breathy vocals that grate on the ear for an entire CD. Taxi!

        1 out of 5 stars Weak!.......2005-04-08

Eh. pretty lame. weak vocals for a female vocalist. will never compare to some of the great femail vocalists. Music is very cookie cutter. Can't see much of a following ever being created for Shamra, even though they won some IMA award. oh well ...

Just your typical band ... mediocre talent with a so-so vocalist, trying to make emotionally charged tunes, but it ends up sounding forced.
