A delightfully buoyant, mock-creepy collection of film scores from Hollywood's first and best call for quirk, strangeness, and charm. Focusing on Elfman's post-1992 work (much of it for director Tim Burton), this 2 CD set features excerpts from Edward Scissorhands, To Die For, and Batman Returns, among other lesser items. -- Jeff Bateman

5 out of 5 stars Priceless, at any price.......2007-07-06

Years ago, watching peter Jennings cover the funeral procession of Princess Diana, my soul was captured by some hauntingly beautiful music that at times played in the background. So began my mission to find out what it was, who wrote it and how I could get it. After some correspondence with the network I was put in touch with the woman who "put together" that part of the programming. All she could remember is that it came from the movie "Black Beauty". THEN I found out how many versions of that had been made lol. With determination, I finally found it, and had a local music store order it for me.
There are no words to describe what this music does to me. I did try listening to some of the other tracks, but they didn't even come close. I rate this music right up there with the 1971 score for "Jane Eyre" by John Willams... and that's pretty high :D

5 out of 5 stars Good overview.......2007-04-18

Very nice overview of Elfman work. Insufficient by itself but worth having along with the full soundtracks. Bonus disc is a nice extra.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music!!!!!!!!!.......2005-09-08

I Love Danny Elfman's music so much that I have started my own collection of the soundtracks that he composed. For a while, I was trying to find the "Beetlejuice" theme song from the TV show, but thanks to this release, I finally have it!!! Keep up the good work Elfman!

5 out of 5 stars Very nice for a Danny Elfman collection.......2005-08-02

Music For A Darkened Theater, Vol.2 is a great cd!!! I love all of the tracks on both cd's,but my fav. ones are the t.v. scores and the This Is Halloween demo!!! If you love this, then i recomend looking at all the actually albums on this cd and his other works!!!! good job,Danny Elfman.

5 out of 5 stars Bring on Volume 3.......2005-05-04

The liner notes and "This is Halloween Demo" on this compilation are well worth the CD price by themselves. Danny comments on each of the tracks on the CDs which is a rare and ego-free look at what a composer thinks of his own work.

Edward Scissorhands is magical, Black Beauty is a rollercoaster of emotion, and Dolores Claiborne makes me want to find the nearest piano. This is not a "Most Popular" compilation, rather it aptly showcases Danny Elfman's (and Orchestrator, Steve Bartek's) brilliance and wide range of style.

Every suite has an Elfman signature, such as the layered complexity which never sounds overdone, or the use of a choir as an instrument.

This (and Volume 1) are examples of the work of a modern day composer who consistently stands out as one of the best.

If you like this and have the spare cash, grab the individual scores from some of the movies he has worked on, including "Men In Black", "Spiderman", "Batman", "Batman Returns", "Nightmare Before Christmas", "Edward Scissorhands", "Mars Attacks" and so many more.

Album Description

The Electric Prunes have always been a California band. Screaming out of the late 60's their pulsating music captured the hope and angst of a drifting generation. Well the drifting is back, and so are the Electric Prunes! Perhaps to the rescue!

From the minute you "come flying", as the lyric suggests on the introduction, this seminal band delivers the goods. 13 surprising new flame-laden psych tracks melt your speakers with "Prune" trademark fuzz, twang, tremolo and mayhem. For those that thought the 60's were over.....hang onto your wah wah!

Not some rehash or recreation of a time past, this is the real thing played as only the "real people" can play it. The "California" of the 60's is found at the end of some gloriously simple songs, memorable riffs and a sense that each track is actually taking place in some cosmic vortex of a past time. This record sounds just like 1967!

Legendary Moby Grapeist Peter Lewis joins the band for some vintage 60's guitar work on "Rickenbacker 12 String", an ode to that very special "California made" 12 string guitar.

California mixes some cool Rudi Protrudi abstract guitar artwork on the cover, with a range of images from a touring musician losing his pants in France (49 SONGS), to a guy that can't leave his flipped out girlfriend because he just tattooed her name on his bum (Rosy made me crazy). Face it, all pertinent topics.

"California" is Escapist Surfing, the Hollywood Movie Business, Famous Friends, even an ass kicking Tidal Wave. This CD leaves no doubt in what is left of anyone's mind that the Electric Prunes were, and are, anchors for a drifting generation. Man the lifeboats!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The sixties are alive.......2007-02-04

Moby Grapist Peter Lewis' voice may have lost a bit of its edge, but his chops are still solidly in the sixties. SLIDESHOW CHARADE is the album's standout track. Other excellent cuts are PACIFIC OCEAN BLUE, an ode to surfing and the Beach Boys, and the group's tribute to the Byrds THE RICKENBACKER 12 STRING. An excellent Psychedelic/garage flavored album that would have fit seemlessly as an August, 1967 release. Hopefully, there are more jems of this ilk to follow.

Price and shipping to Australia was just great. You blokes are the duck's guts.(Thats a good thing)

5 out of 5 stars Psychedelic Masterpiece.......2006-09-15

I always hoped for a reunion of the Electric Prunes, but never expected it to happen. After the ecstatic shock wore off, when I heard they were back, I worried that like most bands they would comeback in a vain attempt to either resell their old stuff, or make music to fit into the current commercial trend. Wow, what a happy surprise. They came back more psychedelic than ever. Old prune albums had a few great songs on them and then some failed experiments. This album is solidly great all the way thru. They merely picked up where they left off and went a few steps further. I always wondered what they could have done if only they stayed together. Well here it is at last. I especially like the songs Rewired and Cinema Verite, which is kind of a spooky tune. I hope they contunue to experiment and go further out there where no band has gone before. I believe many of these songs could have been hit singles back in the day. I hope in the future they forget the psychedelic pop idea and launch into epic voyages of mental transmutation, transformation; you get it, real psychedelic adventures. If you like the Electric Prunes or psychedelic music at all, then you really need to get this album. If you never heard psychedelic music this is the perfect place to start. It is a real treat, a masterpiece.

4 out of 5 stars Back to the 60's.......2005-07-23

It was great to hear the familiar sound that the Electric Prunes had in the 60's. Yes, the voices have changed. Age does that. But the quality of their voices has not deteriorated. The freshness of the songs combined with the old sound just kind of takes you back again to when you heard "Too Much to Dream" and "Kyrie Elaison" for the first time. That signature psychedlic sound is still there and it's great to hear.

5 out of 5 stars It's Like They never Left!.......2004-08-27

Often, when bands get back together after many years apart, they find that the old magic somehow eludes them. They become little more than a sad nostalgia-fest. But not so the Prunes! With the "California" CD, they somehow take that old 60s/psychedelic/punk/surf thing they did so well and bring it into the 21st century. It really is like they never split up in the first place!

Honestly, there is not a weak cut on this record. But, that said, I do, of course, have my favorites: "Slideshow Charade" with its bizzare harmonies effectively sets the 60s-never-ended-and-they're-still-great tone; "Pacific Ocean Blue" is a delightful paean to the Beach Boys and Brian Wilson, with an intriguing musical/melodic structure; "Rewired" (great pun) is terrific riff rock; "Tidal Wave" with its infectuous melody and guitar hooks simply demands radio play (programmers please take note). It's all here: the distorted stratocasters; wammy bars; tremolo; engaging, flowery lyrics; and plain old---if I may use the phrase---innocent fun.

The Electric Prunes have pulled off the nearly impossible: they have managed to preserve and update their sound to make it even better and more original than the music they first made together all those years ago.

If you happen to run into them somewhere, please give them a hearty thanks and handshake for me.

5 out of 5 stars TRACY YOUNG IS THE S**T.......2006-05-11

This is the second CD I've bought by Ms. Young (the first was "DanceCulture"). I was a little rough on my first review and although I tried to submit another one, I couldn't.

I plan to make up for that so-so review with this review, so here goes: It doesn't get any better than this! When you live in podunk USA (as I do), anytime you can get your hands on music like this it's, well, like a gift from the heavens! The majority of people in this town have NEVER heard music like this or, if they have, they will label it "disco". Too funny. I love music that is mixed to flow one into the other and although I just got the CD yesterday, I've already just about worn it out. Very few male DJs can keep my interest in their mixes, because I've got their CDs collecting dust in my CD rack. Tracy Young delivers the goods in spades. I love every selection on this CD; however, my personal favorites are "Rapido", "Shine", and "I Believe in We".

I don't care what anyone says: this CD kicks ass. I can't wait until her other CDs arrive in the mail! I HIGHLY recommend this one!

3 out of 5 stars Not enough umph.......2005-04-26

While there are a couple of standout tracks on here, the tribal and vocal mix becomes very routine, never reaching any outstanding peaks, and just sort of thumps along after a while. It's not a bad collection if you want to get your hands on a couple of rare mixes. Standout tracks for me include: Wishing You Were here, the rare Tracy Young remix of Gloria Estefan, the incredible Tracy Young mix of Cyndi Lauper, and the final track, Believe in We. Track times are mostly rather short also, but there are some pretty long versions:

    1. wishing you were here (6:59)
    2. That feeling (4:47)
    3. Rapido (5:32)
    4. wrapped (7:03)
    5. Hum melody (3:43)
    6. feels so hot (6:02)
    7. Ferosh (6:55)
    8. get back to the music (4:13)
    9. drums (6:33)
    10. Shine (9:15)
    11. sexercise (5:34)
    12. Jadore (4:09)
    13. Believe in we (9:02)

5 out of 5 stars Tracy Young is a VERY GOOD DJ..........2004-10-06

Regardless of the slack that Tracy has gotten for being a female DJ, it makes one wonder why, men, have such an issue with her music and perception of it. Tracy Young has a flair and a style that most people can't compare to. Come on people, life isn't always a peak hour event and an afterhour party. This CD has got to be one of the marvels of 2003. Personally got this CD signed by Tracy Young in Boston at Machine earlier this year. START TO FINISH, Tracy has blissful taste and a mixing talent like no other. Next marvel of 2004, check out JAM & SPOON TRIPOMATIC FAIRYTALES 3003, if you can get your hands on it.

5 out of 5 stars Music is the Answer.............2004-10-03

Not only is this CD one of the Best continual mixed dance music compilations out there right now, it also supports Care Resource and all of those in the battle against AIDS. As if those two reasons weren't enough it has exclusive remixes and original songs by Tracy Young and will make you wanna boogie all night long.......
    A must have.

    3 out of 5 stars It's ok for pre-party or after-party.......2004-07-17

This CD's music is too casual for the hardcore circuit. None of this music you would find during peak hour. It's great just to get things started or cooling down during an after party.

Where else would you find the 1979 trk. originally released on ENJOY rcds. "SUPERAPPIN'" at? Or trks. from the super rare, impossible to find 1989 album "PIANO"? I didn't think so! It even has cuts from the BEAT-STREET sound track!! 'nuff said, cop it!!

This is the real deal. Old school style/ new school motivator.
When rap was fresh and exciting. Now all there is hooked on phonics-a,e,i,o,u. Go back in time when the streets were alive.
Throw your your hands in the air and wave them like you just don't care. If rap is your way of life and you do what you like
then this is the Truth. So when the white man is bringing you down, throw this on and come back to the light.Long live Grand Master Flash and the Furious Five. Mellie Mel kicks it Strong.

              Peace!

5 out of 5 stars This should be in all classrooms (and rap music collections).......2001-12-20

This box set is the definitive collection of Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five's music. It has all the classics. It also has forgotten gems like "Step Off" and more recent releases like "Freestyle" and "Drug Wars." Unfortunately, it doesn't touch on Grandmaster Flash' Electra years ("Sign of the Times" and "Girls Love The Way He Spins" would have been nice additions). However, it more than makes up for this with classics missing from most compilations like "She's Fresh," "It's A Shame" and "Super Rappin'". The music of Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five, in their various formulations, influenced the music we listen to today more than any other group since the 1970's. Whether you're a fan of Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five, a fan of rap music in general, a music historian or someone who just wants to reminisce on the days when rap was still an underground culture, this is the CD collection for you. Hopefully, it will remain available for generations to come. The influence of their music definitely will.

4 out of 5 stars Kickin' music from Kickin' times.......2000-07-14

Grandmaster flash is the king and there is no question about it. This album collects the highlights of the glory days of his career and each track is a heavy groove and great listening. His scratching and sampling are where it all came from. buy it.
