Greatest Hits is the budget option for those who've concluded that two discs of Donovan is a disc too many and zero is one too few. Troubadour, Sony's 1992 Donovan box set, boasts nearly three times the tracks this 15-song single-disc retrospective offers, but Greatest Hits delivers what it promises: "Colours" and "Catch the Wind" from his folkie phase and "Mellow Yellow," "Sunshine Superman," and "Wear Your Love Like Heaven" from the lad's best-pal-a-flower-ever-had period. Also included are plenty more catchy folk-rock hits cut between 1964 and 1970 as well as four bonus tracks, including the delightfully earnest "Atlantis" and "Barabajagal," with the celebrated first-edition Jeff Beck Group providing backing. Donovan's blissed-out liner notes ("Whatever you think this song is about, it probably is") round out the package quite quaintly. --Steven StolderCustomer Reviews:
Dare To Compare.......2007-05-27
This is my "never-was-has-bin" super-group that I want to go into the studio with Sir George Martin:
Drums: Mick Fleetwood
Bass: John McVie
Lead Guitar: Peter Frampton (back-up vocals)
Keyboards: Sir Paul McCartney (singer-songwriter)
Acoustic Guitar: Donovan (singer-songwriter)
Think of the fun :o) !!!
GREAT CD.......2007-05-14
The catchier catch the wind didn't catch here as best as catch could.......2007-04-13
Even so, it warrants 5 stars. Heck, it adds "Atlantis." At any rate, though, I'm not sure I can recommend this newer version of the "greatest hits" over the earlier edition. Basically, I loved the "Catch the Wind" re-recording this CD lacks.
BTW: For any Taoists out there who'd like to hear a little of it put to music, check out Donovan's take on Tao called "The Way" from his late-90s CD: "Sutras." That wouldn't have been out of place here on this CD neither (though not quite a hit)....
I forgot how good he was..........2007-04-08

Cheers For The Psychedelic Troubadour.......2006-01-31
This gem is from Vancouver, BC, Canada in 1986, it is solo Donovan with just guitar, voice & harmonica. The first thing to discover here is that this CD has AMAZING SOUND QUALITY, it's crystal clear and its sounds like you are sitting front and center in a small room with Big D... this disk rates a for real big Five Stars for sound quality... STELLAR
Second thing to note, Donovan sounds fantastic on this one, This is a great performance, with a few stories thrown in to set the 60's tone for all listening. "Catch The Wind", "Mellow Yellow", "Universal Soldier", "Lalena","Jennifer Juniper", "Hurdy Gurdy Man", "Atlantis", "There is a Mountian", all big hits way back when, are included and in this acoustic / solo setting they all sound fresh and new.
Four Bonus Tracks have been added to this edition of "Greatest Hits Live" and the are nice, but they just a touch lower on the Sonic scale than the first 14 cuts.
All Donovan fans must add this one to their collections as it a great Disk.... A Real For Real 5 Star Disk... BUY IT.
Live recordings at their best.......2004-07-26

Missing Some Songs, but Still Great.......2006-07-21
And you can tell that whoever put this together really cared, really understood Don's music, really went for quality of not only sound, but performance as well. Boy, what I wouldn't have given to be able to spend the hundreds of hours pouring through all the songs and performances, being there through all of that must have been glorious.
Donovan's recording of "Catch the Wind" here sends chills up your spine. His rendition of "Hurdy Gurdy Man" with George Harrison's missing verse is equally chilling. The acoustic versions of "Sunshine Superman" and "Cosmic Wheels" are stunning. The version of "Young Girl Blues" takes me right back to the "Mellow Yellow" period. It has always been one of my favorite songs. I could go on, keep gushing about this fine live record, but I'll stop now. Oh wait! I forget to tell you that this is a must own Donovan disc for anybody who is even remotely interested in his music. You gotta get this one, you really do!
This particular version of this beautiful live recording is missing four songs, "Young but Growing," "Stealin'," "Love Will Find a Way" and "Sailing Homeward" and lose a star for that, because you should go out and find the complete disc, there are so many versions to choose from, it won't be hard.
Often better than the original versions.......2003-04-22
Highlights:
Hurdy Gurdy Man - Extended here; Donovan tells a masterful story of him, 4 Beatles, 1 Beach Boy, and Mia Farrow in India. Also, he sings a new verse...written by George Harrison!
Wear Your Love Like Heaven - Absolutely beautiful. Much better and more delightful than the studio version.
Universal Soldier
To Susan On the West Coast Waiting - Donovan performs some very nice renditions of his anti-war material.
This is a GEM... even if you have the songs on another CD!.......2003-02-10

Fun Music of the 60s.......2006-01-20
I tend to divide Donovan's music (probably incorrectly, but it helps me to organize the scope of his music) into folk, hippie/psychedelic, and rock. The second category spans a large range in its own right, but generally includes peace, love and flower power songs with the slightly surreal.
Donovan's folk music might include "Colours," "Catch the Wind," "Lalena," "There Is a Mountain," and "Jennifer Juniper." Some of this music could also fit into the next category down, which takes no great stretch of the imagination because many folk singers ended up as part of the hippie movement.
The hippie/psychedelic music would include "Mellow Yellow," "Colours," "Hurdy Gurdy Man," "Epistle to Dippy," "Sunshine Superman," "Wear Your Love Like Heaven," "Season of the Witch," "Atlantis," and "To Susan on the West Coast Waiting." This last song is also an anti-war song relating to the Viet Nam war.
The faster paced music would be "Barabajagal" and "Riki Tiki Tavi." These two songs anchor one end of Donovan's music. I generally remember Donovan more for his hippie/psychedelic music, so I'll not spend any more time are these two songs.
Donovan did very well as a folk singer. Moving on to more surreal music was very little stretch for Donovan. Included in his music is a variety of styles and influences. "Catch the Wind" sounds a lot like Bob Dylan. "Hurdy Gurdy Man" is very psychedelic, and could owe influences to people like Jimi Hendrix. The Beatles have been credited as influences on songs like "Mellow Yellow."
My own personal favorite is "Atlantis". There was a strong desire in the 60s to ascribe a mystical origin to all civilizations, one which included a civilization greater and more peaceful than any in existence any time since; a sort of Eden of civilization, where arts and sciences were predominant and the people had nothing to fear from other civilizations or from each other. A civilization where there was plenty for all and people were happy. This theme was a strong part of the hippie movement, which for some seemed to be a desire to recapture a past that as far as we know never existed.
I suppose every era would like the claim of being unique, and unlikely to be repeated. Looking back over the last six decades, each was unique, but for most of those decades, while technology, education, political conditions and so on have changed significantly, the human condition has kept a remarkable similarity during most of that time. However, the 60s were an exception. Large numbers of people attempted to create a different sort of society; to create a different standard of civilization. In the course of that attempt, wonderful music was created. Donovan was a part of that attempt, and created some of the most interesting and socially reflective music of the era.
This particular version of "Donovan's Greatest Hits" is a 2002 remaster of a 1999 release. I am unable to tell much of a difference between the two versions, so review which versions are available when it is time to buy and chose the version that seems most likely to meet your needs.
