About the Artist
Think of LEVIATHAN as the orphan child of Black Sabbath and The Misfits, abandoned in NYC and raised by Henry Rollins, Motorhead, The Dead Kennedy's, Fear, and Danzig. Old school punk fused with metal, polished to a rusted edge for a new generation!
Product Description
From Throat Culture Magazine- Leviathan is a NYC based quartet whose seven tracks employ some dirty, NYC based groove a la Circus Of Power and nearby neighbors The Misfits. With some other influences that range from bluesy rock, shown on the driving "No Heart", to the horror punk of the rocking opener "Misery", be ready for the onslaught of this dark edged rock 'n' roll outfit. With a bit of morbidity running through its punk metal mix, Leviathan aims for the blackest recesses of your mind, and succeed in finding them.
While the duo have little trouble writing melodic tracks that pump, they have serious issues with making it work for more than 10 minutes at a time. As the more negative reviewer accurately suggests, this grows monotonous very rapidly. The vocals are standard Euro-synth with that smooth, deep tone that ends up sounding stilted and snobby as opposed to passionate; it works sometimes but grates on you before long. The music is a bit to straight-out-of-the-can as well lacking creative spark. I'll admit that "Faces" and "Game" are very strong singles with harmonious lyrical flow and make me want to hit the dancefloor, however it's difficult to leave the disc on much longer. The collaboration with the excellent electro industrial group [:SITD:] is interesting on its own, but its harshness is an extremely odd placement alongside the other songs - really a fish out of water.
Generally speaking NNB are an overrated band whose sound doesn't stick with you well enough to work as powerful pop and isn't daring enough to work as art. I pop it in for 2-3 tracks from time to time for dancefloor, singalong fun and it works on that level. Still ultimately this is an artistic failure.
