Editorial Reviews
The French band MENAM was created in 1999, but most of its musicians had already been playing together for two years. Their music is a mix of different influences, reunited in a hard-worked Progressive heavy-metal. Except for the dominant groups in this style (DREAM THEATER, SYMPHONY X...), the Seventies seem to be a major interest (YES, PINK FLOYD, GENESIS...), one can also note that the symphonic music from the middle of the XIXth Century to the XXth century (WAGNER and DEBUSSY among others) has also played a great role in the aesthetic choices of the group. Published by the Brennus label, the first album "Aesthetics" (2003) combines a powerful heavy-metal music with very precise narration and description. The perfect coordination between music and and lyrics are very important to the musicians: that's why French is often added to English all along the compositions. You have to listen to this !

Album Description
"An eccentric, genre-defying sound." - CHICAGO READER"Dirty disco-punk, filthy dub reggae, and filthier funk." - GROOVES
"N*E*R*D meets The Specials. A mission against political apathy." - THE WIRE
"Pre-digital dancehall and a patina of modern hip-hop." - SEATTLE WEEKLY
"Making art out of punk, jazz, soul, and dub." - MAGNET
International sounds homogenize through twisted dirty avenues, where the high-rolling boom-box dub kings cruise tropical boulevards, tops down, stereos ablaze at twilight. This Chicago trio's strange rawar style stretches the sonic palette like Reed Richards (Fantastic Four), whose creator Jack Kirby plays influence to vocalist Damon Locks' intricately woven album covers depicting dark, rugged cityscapes.
The group's third album ups the ante with all chips on the table. Diving deeper into uncharted waters, the musical monsoon continues to saturate the players' diverse sounds into their own unique vision. The new "Chicago calling" is here, pulsating through the windy city's turbulence. But why bother with labels? Play it loud, and ride fast.

Unlike most other works.......2005-06-02
I'll say that this record does require your time to really get to know it. Patience and repeated listens, not something uncommon in the indie/post rock territory. Some say it's on par with Kid A, and being a Radiohead fan I can agree - slightly. Cold House feels to me to be more organic, but 'colder' (forgive my pun) than Kid A. Kid A has the production of Nigel Godrich, while Cold House does not. This shows through in track organization and overall feel. But don't get me wrong. I'm a fan of this record.
In terms of sounds, the glitch sounds are more prominent, and some have just the right attack and pitch to make my skin crawl. There are more beats, many of the tracks have a trippy-dance feel to them. I think you could dance to them if you wanted to (not recommended with Kid A)...there is more flow, more singing. Overall it seems to me like Hood is comfortable being different, as if the band existed in this vein of music their whole career (which I cannot verify since I haven't heard any earlier recordings, just this and Outside Closer) while Kid A set out to be that way.
In conclusion, undeniable are the similarities to Kid A, and this is entirely reasonable because Cold House was released a year later.
Personally I find the opener and track 2 to be my favorites, with 2 as my number one. They have beautiful instrumentation and a heavy beat, as well as enough sensible(?) lyrics to keep your attention.
Give this unusual gem a try, and you'll see what I and these other reviewers mean.
Every bit as good as Kid A - An unheard masterpiece.......2002-11-07

A WELCOME BREAK FROM THE MONOTONY OF THE MAINSTREAM.......2002-02-14
I bought this on the same day i got B.R.M.C and Preston School of Industry and i listened to Hood after listening to those. It really took me back and made me listen in depth (whereas the others struggled to take a hold on the listener, not that they weren't anygood.)
Easily the best song on this album has to be track 3, while the most likely single is track 6. Tracks 1, 2, 4 and 10 also are very very good however tracks 5, 7 and 8 are an unstructured mess and would fit into KID A easily. This 'underground' band really are different and worth a listen.
Avoid if you like the simple easy to comprehend mainstream sounds of bands like the Stereophonics and Travis.
Such a sweet release. Worth your time........2002-01-13
I bought this album because I had never heard of Hood and I do like cLOUDDEAD. I have to thank cLOUDDEAD once again for the exposure to this group.
Is it IDM? Is it post-rock? What is it? It's great. That's what it is. Hood have taken many components of styles and melted them into an incredible music experience. It works very well. On songs like "Lines Low To Frozen Ground" we get a bit of laid back jazzy sounds with an almost Cranberries vocal in the background. With "Branches Bare" (my favorite) you'll experience some of the grooviest post-rock I've heard yet.
The bottom line is that these guys will definately be up and coming with this release. The reason I say with this album is that they are still pretty obscure, yet they have released five albums to date.
Do yourself a favor and check this album out. Try cLOUDDEAD while your at it. They're hip-hop, but not like you'd think. These artists are doing some special work and deserve your time. Again, this is all my opinion, but I hope you enjoy this disc as much as I do.

Since childhood, we've been taught to never judge a book by its cover. Does the same apply to records and CDs? Hardly. CDs, unlike books, don't allow us to peruse their contents before purchasing them; we're limited to what clues we are given on the outside. Lucky for us, CD covers, more often than not, reflect the nature of their contents: cool, thoughtful packaging tends to contain cool, thoughtful music. Take, for example, this latest full-length release from the Chicago-based indie record label, Aesthetics. There are no words to be found anywhere on the cover. None. Not even the artist's name or album title--just an artistic, extreme close-up photo of someone's wrist and neck. The inside cover isn't much help, either. There are no credits or track listings and still no title. (A trip to their Web site reveals that the album is, in fact, untitled.) Those of you who are familiar with Marc Hellner and Joel Kriske's work as Pulse Programming know what to expect. Like their packaging, the music here is minimal. Warm washes of sound unaccompanied by beats, with slow, nearly nonexistent buildups in each "song" (the word doesn't really apply here, since Pulse Programming has abandoned traditional song structure entirely). Fans of their gentle, intelligent ambient music will be thrilled to get their hands on this aesthetically pleasing morsel of ear food. Newcomers to the world of Pulse Programming will have to take our word for it: this one's a gem. --Courtney ReimerCustomer Reviews:

Karyshma's refreshing breeze of bold sound.......2004-01-13
When I heard the entire CD, I was blown away. This band has an eclectic mix of percussions, acoustic guitars, violin, flute, and to top it all, an amazing female lead vocalist called Falguni. Her versatile and powerful voice in "Empty", "Some Day", and "Nickle Soles" alone is a good enough reason to buy this CD. The band has really different sounds and arrangements I have not heard before. Really fresh and gutsy. My favorites were the soulful haunting melodies of "Empty", where the song becomes bi-lingual (I didn't really understand what the other language was but it all sounded magical and beautiful), the funky instrumental "Eastbound", the finely crafted "Nearly Home" and "Man". I also liked the suspenseful, three-act production of the song called "Monster," which starts with some beautiful Indian chanting, breaks out into chaos and anarchy, only to return to its peaceful beginning. I also found the song "Nickle Soles" interesting, given that it's a dark song about lust and love. The CD ends with a gorgeous number called "Some Day" that has nothing but Falguni's emotive vocals and an acoustic guitar. I kept playing over and over again. The CD is mixed by industry veterans but it still manages to maintain its raw energy and passion. The band has a great mix of confident musicianship, lyrics with deeper messages, and melodies that haunt for a long time. I've already recommended this CD to my friends. This band is here to stay.

Windsor : Stay plugged in!.......2006-08-06
This slow, repetitious, post-rock group got more acoustic and mellow on this album, though while aiming to be something akin to hypnotic and introspective, the band's lack of talent glares brighter here then on previous distortion-washed excursions. Embellishing cheaply written songs with cheap instrumentation, this is just the kind of album that gets under my nerves for it's lack of conveying the subtle depth it is attempting. Something about the acoustic, intimate songs are just sad..in a compositional way, not emotional. It was only on track 6 (thankfully following with 7) that my head finally shot up, awoken from it's apathetic stupor, to quickly and thankfully confirm why I sometimes appreciate this band- as a third rate mogwai knock off, with perhaps even greater pop chops...It is only in the beginning of that track that it's deep drums and subtle electric strumming make me realize this attempt was a misfire.
more accessible, less challenging.......2003-03-31
this record honestly doesn't even sound like the rest of their catalogue. one song (awkwardness) sounds like it has a joy division influence for christ's sake. gone on this album are windsor's trademark boxy and repetitive rhythms, strange hypnotic, precise guitar work, oblique synths, and mysterious, restrained vocals... in their place are banal pop songs. i can't help but draw a parallel to member dan matz's solo project 'the birdwatcher.' i must say however, i find that material more challenging and inventive than most of the stuff on this album. one song on here actually sounds like a birdwacher song reworked.
it's not really a bad album, it's just a bit boring, and not as stark and quiely compelling as their prior stuff. it just sounds now like they could be any indie band doing similiar stuff (i.e. calla). this record is much happier too. it has a hopeful quality, but the way they pull it off makes it feel a bit cheesy. i think they're just trying something new, and i'm not digging it as much. but i guess bands have to experiment to keep things fresh.
anyway, it's not offensive, and it's kind of amusing at points. especially when mcneelely sings instead of matz. it gets innocent and gleeful. so roll a joint, go for a drive, smoke it up, pop this in the player and call it even.
20 BPM.......2002-07-12
Their best record yet.......2002-07-10
The music here is similar to things on "Minnie Greunzfeldt" and "Difference & Repetition" but now they're shying away from longer "jams" like "techno w/ no drums" and focusing more on vocals and songwriting. The vocals are really just what this band needed to put them over the top.
The Emotional Rescue LP frees Windsor for the Derby from any pre-conceived notions of "space rock" and has allowed them to make one hell of an album.

England's Hood have an exquisite sense of restraint. They're sparing with their vocal melodies, but when they do decide to drop one in, it's likely to land on a finely textured bed of sound. The title track compellingly opens with an acoustic guitar pattern played over a skittering electronic rhythm and rock-steady drumming, the perfect backup for the song's staccato vocal line. Unusual layers of percussion energize the emotional indie rock of "Cold Fire Woods of Western Lanes." "The World Touches Too Hard" sets uptempo blips against a slow piano line and lulling drones to create an ambiance that recalls mid-'70s Brian Eno and Robert Wyatt. Dub subtly informs "The Fact That You Failed" and "It's Been a Long Time Since I Was Last Here." On the latter track, electric guitar loops, a touch of vibraphone, and simple, moody trumpet create a mysterious, melancholy driftscape that closes the album on a high note. --Fred CisternaCustomer Reviews:
Home is no place without Hood.......2001-09-04
band. The music they create is a refreshing mix of mogwai
and tortoise: dub, jazz, lo-fi, pop-influeneces. The atmoshphere is one of rainy days, you stay in and drink another cup of tea. 'Hood is where it hurts'is probably the ideal soundtrack for september. 'The cold western lanes' and
'the fact you've failed' are weltschmerz-pop.
Incredible band! Check also 'the cycle of days and seasons'
