Transistor Radio may be bookmarked by instrumentals, but M. Ward's cracked, jazzy croon is the true star of all his work. The sixteen tunes here all sound like sketches that became songs on the spot, and we all know the well-crafted illusion of spontaneity is a very difficult thing to pull off repeatedly. His most consistently enjoyable album to date, Transistor offers breezy, smart, poppy music very much in the American folk tradition, from country blues to bleary-eyed bedroom strums. This is the soundtrack to a lazy Sunday when you sleep in, read the Times in bed, cuddle with a friend, then finally leave the house for cheese grits. "I'll Be Yr Bird" sounds like the Fruit Bats collaborating with Vic Chesnutt, while Ward recalls Stew on "Hi Fi," the deadpan lyrics over lazy, lovely sounds: "Why burn your bridges when you can blow your bridges up?" The laudanum-like charms of Ward's music are tough to resist. --Mike McGonigal

Album Description

From a half-named troubadour with an otherworldly voice and an old time sensibility comes this fourth full-length, a collection of songs "about childhood memories of a utopian radio power", dedicated to "the last of the remaining independent radio stations." With songs normally associated with the front porches of Louisiana, back when families gathered around the radio instead of the TV, "Transistor Radio" fits somewhere between your great-grandfather's collection of 78 rpm records and current and timeless artists such as Iron & Wine, Gram Parsons, and Tom Waits. Guests include Jim James (My Morning Jacket), Jenny Lewis (Rilo Kiley), Howe Gelb (Giant Sand), and Jordan Hudson (The Thermals).

What Elvis did with Junior Parker, the Stones did with Howlin' Wolf, M. Ward has done with Louis Armstrong. Why didn't I think of that?

5 out of 5 stars Awesome, Hypnotic, as usual.......2007-07-06

This was the 3rd M. Ward album I got. If you haven't any of his stuff, this wouldn't be a bad start, but Post War might be a little more "Beginner Friendly." Anyways, this is a solid album.
Highlights-
You still believe in me-A beautiful instrumental version of the 2nd track of Pet sounds; "Beachy" and Beautiful, a strange combination
Hi-Fi -Fun and poppy, cool guitar
Big Boat-subtly funny, upbeat
Paul's song-I love this song, probably my favorite. I saw him play this at the Orange Peel in Asheville. A great Driving song! It reminds me of Paul Bunyan
Here Comes the sun again-The Reason I bought the CD. I think it's an answer to Nick Drake's "Pink Moon." Look up on Youtue "M. Ward, Cadillac," and compare it to VW's Cabriolet commercial featuring Nick Drake
Oh Take Me Back- A Carter Family cover, I had this stuck in my head for days. Goes along well with his style.

All in all, an awesome cd, it may take a few listens, but I definitely recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Grows on you, leaves you wanting more M. Ward.......2007-03-26

I was first exposed to M. Ward's work through his 200 release Post-War, which I found to be one of the year's best. So I instantly started diving back to his earlier material. "Transistor Radio" was my first choice and one that I don't regret. This is not an album that comes to you immediately, but one that grows on you if you give it a chance. It certainly is not meant to be listened to if you are in a rush, or for the drive to work. This is by all means an album to chill out to and simply enjoy with your undivided attention. Some people say it's for a lazy Sunday afternoon, others say it's for the Saturday morning coffee: I think it works quite well on a Sunday evening too (at least in Florida as the spring is upon us).

The themes in here are simple, loaded with a folk/americana feel to them and with a basic production that gives the album a transistor radio-like feel. When you finish the closing tracks, "Well-Tempered Clavier" (composed by J.S. Bach and masterfully interpreted by Ward in the guitar), you are simply ready for more: be it more M. Ward or playing the album again.

4 out of 5 stars Lonesome Fuel.......2006-09-06

I first discovered Matthew Ward on `The Transfiguration of Vincent' (2003), which became one of my favourite albums of that year. I've waited eagerly for the follow-up which has finally arrived in the form of `Transistor Radio: Memories Of A Utopian Radio Power'

Matthew Ward is similar in my opinion to old Blues, Gospel and Folk singers of a bygone era, which makes him sound in a way kind of familiar. His voice has what I would refer to as a fragile rasp and sometimes, husky quality similar to Crosby, Stills & Nash with elements of Mississippi John Hurt. Musically this is well produced yet minimal giving these songs an open airy sound. `Transistor Radio' opens with an instrumental cover of the Beach Boys `You Still Believe In Me' before the album gets underway. Standout tracks in my opinion are `Fuel For Fire' and `Lullaby + Exile'. Lyrically these all these songs have a world-weary optimistic approach.

I discovered Matthew Ward through listening to Devendra Banhart, Iron &Wine, Grandaddy and Sparklehorse. If you like any of these I'm sure you'll find something to enjoy here, although it's closer in content to the first two with the production of the latter. Check out M. Ward's previous record `The Transfiguration of Vincent' also, which contains an excellent fragile cover version of David Bowie's `Lets Dance'.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best albums of all time.......2006-06-10

i came across M. ward unexpectedly at a white stripes concert, where he was the opening act. He completely blew me away, so i went out and bought this album. This album is haunting and poignant, while being beautiful and, for lack of another good adjective, kind of weird. M. Ward has a rough voice but it complemetns his guitar playing excellently. Songs such as "I'll be Yr Bird", "Fuel For Fire" and "Here COmes the Sun Again" are all amazing songs, though i personally like "4 hours in Washington", a creepy song about insomnia, and "Big Boat", and though i have no clue what its about, its funny/clever. Most of this album is M. Ward playing acoustic guitar and singing, but on some of the songs he has piano, drums, and bass. I dont really know how to describe this album, but to say it sounds like some amazing blast from the far past. and that sounded cheesy, but you must buy this album. now. Buy It.

With Sublime and Sugar Ray having made whitewashed reggae a hot commodity on the pop charts, it makes sense that the prime movers of the genre are making a headlong comeback into the fray. With Transistor, 311 goes for the jugular, cramming the disc with over 20 songs, and just as many angles on its melange of rock, hip-hop and Caribbean musical styles. There are hyper rap-metal rehashes of the hit "Down" ("Tune In," "Starshines," and "Borders"), chunky guitar tracks ("Beautiful Disaster"), and lots of frivolous reggae-lite songs ("Light Years," "Stealing Happy Hours"). --Aidin Vaziri

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I was totally wrong about Transistor.......2007-06-04

This isn't a Sandinista, but damn, it still is ambitious, varied, and great. This definitly isn't a one listen album, and most newcomers will not like this, it takes a while to get used to 311's power riffs over SA Martinez, but they all groove in a way, plus there are some cool _____ on this that make it stand out (I love the bassline on Creature Feature). Transistor is great in it's own way. It sounds different just like all of the classic 311 albums. 311 definitly worked their @$$es off when making this.

So, more on the music. It's definitly spacey, and there are some compelling songs (check out the way Galaxy soars in the air, just how reggae Rub A Dub is). The band also changes their _________ gears. There's more singing, along with the typical rapping that 311 do (obviously). The intstuments are a lot different. P-Nut makes some crazy basslines, the guitars are more varied. They even use Acoustic, which is unusual for 311. Sound effects top the music, along with cool percussion. SO here is a, for most long, ambitious albums need, a track by track analysis (______)!

1.Transistor-IT's mostly a rock song, but has cool reggae choruses and strains of it in the music
2.Prisoner-I thought this one was pretty ________ amazing. This was made for heaven
3.Galaxy-Nice break from Prisoner. This one's __________ dark, and the beggining is rather, like, uh a _________ galaxy.
4.Beautiful Disaster-overrated, but pretty good. I say it's better than Down, but overrated in the same sense.
5.Inner Light Spectrum-Totally _______ stoned song, but I really liked it.
6.Electricty-the only song I don't like. Boring as _________, the vocals are disorted and sound like ______. The worst song on here.
7.What Was I Thinking-great bass intro, and this song definitly won't appeal to everybody. It's crunchy and not pleasant.
8.Jupiter-Interesting intro, and it saves the song. This song jams at times, even with the power chords.
9.Use Of Time-Pretty cool, totally unique and compelling. It's relaxing, yet tears you off the walls as well. The ending of space sounds is a great way to end one of greatest songs on Transistor.
10.The Continous Life-Not sure how to describe this one, but it's one of the weaker songs. The effects save it.
11.No Control-More funky than the rest, and It's a welcome change. Not related to that Bad Religion song (which is also good. Check it out).
12.Running-Another song that sounds like jamming, a highlight.
13.Color-Mostly filler, but I like it sets it for the next song. Essential filler.
14.Light Years-The creepy guitars and drums make this one an interesting song.
15.Creature Feature-Damn! Love the bassline. Too bad you can't just here the bassline more in the song.
16.Tune In-A down re-hash saved by melody and some good effects. I like DOwn, I just think it's overrated.
17.Rub A Dub-Probally the most reggae song they have ever done, but Bradley Nowell did the dance-hall singing better in the song DJ's. Hexum's singing in this is cheesy, but the music makes up for it.
18.Starshines-Typical 311 jam, the first part overshadows the second by a ____________ mile.
19.Strangers-Intereting break, a great suprise along with Running and No Control
20.Borders-Great guitar riff, but nothing too amazing. Essential filler.
21.Stealing Happy Hours-One of the longest 311 songs, and for damn good reason too. The guitar solos are jazzy, the melodies float, couldn't think of a better way to end the album. It ends with the sound of outer space.

This won't appeal to casual listeners who were weaned on Down (I never thought that song was that great anyway), but most 311 fans will appreciate it (I imagine they are open-minded, because that's what Nick Hexum said. That's cool). But the ambitious feel really comes clean, and besides, even the weaker songs are good! IT's no Sandinsita (yeah right), but 311 probally wasn't tyring to make a _________ Sandinsita. I couldn't be happier that they followed this up with their previous album, 311. I used to hate this, but we all change. A classic.

4 out of 5 stars Renegade Soundsystem 311.......2006-08-16

First of all, to the guy who recited the chorus of "beautiful disaster" and submitted it as a review-pretty chill, man, u should write it down in your journal. The link says "write an online review." Stick to that.

Okay to the review. This album would get 5 stars, no question, just like the self-titled and "from chaos." I really would. It's just that there are a total of 21 songs on just one disc, clocking at 67:59. And that's not including the bonus tracks (there's actually a bonus track before the first track, pretty chill!) I really haven't found a bad song on this cd, but I just haven't gotten a chance to focus on everything here. I just don't have that time. I love the fact that they are doing something different. I love "Beautiful Disaster," as well as "Use Of Time," "Electricity," and many others but I can't think of what they are because the cd is so damn long! Maybe as I listen to it more, I can honestly move it up to a 5-star album. Actually, I'm kinda rootin' for that. It's okay though, because I would still recomend this to someone who likes other works by 311, but don't start out with this one. Save it as an afterthought. In school, you can't take Algebra II before you have taken Algebra I. Same rule applies here.

5 out of 5 stars The Most Complete 311 Album To Date.......2006-07-26

Most 311 albums have stand-out tracks but lack flow and consistancy, like MUSIC and 311. Some flow together perfectly but don't have many standout tracks, like GRASSROOTS and FROM CHAOS. I like all of the 311 albums for different reasons, but this one has risen to the top for many reasons...

1. With an album that was considered their first major-hyped release, they made the album they wanted to make. They stuck to their guns and the album was a success because of that.

2. It all flows well together. The songs fall together like a puzzle.

3. It has many, many songs...but almost all of them stand on their own as good tracks. "Prisoner", "Jupiter", "No Control", "Rub a Dub", etc. They are all different sounding songs, but on this album, this fit in and stand tall.

4. This album contains three of the most beloved songs in the history of 311: "Beautiful Disaster", "Use of Time", and "Stealing Happy Hours".

As stated earlier, this is probably not the best place for a new fan of 311 to start. Since I'm not a fan of Hits Collections, the place to start is either 311 or FROM CHAOS...but once you're in, this album will more than likely be in your CD player the most amount of time.

5 out of 5 stars Their Most Complete Album, and closest thing to a concept album.......2006-05-13

While I think Grasroots and Music are the best albums from the band, I think this album is the best one to listen to start to finish. It is very solid from beginning to end, and sorta seems to talk about the band's philosophy of life, outer space, technology, and probably a thousand other subtle things. While there are songs that standout IMO (Stealing Happy hours is my favorite on the album with No Control, Inner Light Specturm, Prisoner, and Starshines), pretty much every song on the album ties in well with the other, and there are only a couple tracks that are sort of weak or don't (Tune In and Rub a Dub come to mind, but they aren't that bad either). I love the fact they went into the studio to create an album they wanted to create, and did it with a lot of originality and supurb musicianship. This album is definitely a must own.

4 out of 5 stars "If you want more beats for your buck there's no luck..".......2006-03-08

For this review, I'm going to go straight to the point. This is not 311's best cd but it is extremely well done - and worth the money. With a great mix of 311's reggae, rock, and rapping styles (even 20 tracks!), this is your best bet for a 311 cd to add to your collection if you're already into the band.

I bought this cd and a few others (used) by 311 after getting the Greatest Hits cd when that came out. These cds included 311, Evolver, Transistor, and Soundsystem, but those are for other reviews. What drew me to review this cd first was its amazing variety and long lasting listenability. I still haven't listened to all 20 of the songs, but that's not to say that all of the songs are great - 311 is extremely experimental and some songs just do not hit. The ones that do hit perfectly. I've got a lot of listening to do.

Not convinced? Listen to these songs: "Transistor," "Beautiful Disaster," "Electricity," "Use of Time," "Rub a Dub," and "Starshines."

Album Description

On their sixth full-length, this Brooklyn-based collective crafts a delicate mix of hazy, airbrushed melancholia infused with a brighter undercurrent - a promise of good things to come in a country tinged manner that'll have the hardest of hearts melting. Channeling Fred Neil and Bobby Goldsboro, Gary Olson fulfills his promise as one of the more inspired songwriters of the past decade and anchors his current batch of songs with his restrained baritone. The Ladybug Transistor sound more self-assured here, perhaps due to the addition of keyboard and guitar.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars great indie pop / rock once again.......2007-06-29

Here we have another great 60s influenced indie pop / rock CD from New York's LADYBUG TRANSISTOR. They are one of the most solid bands playing this style of the last 10-15 years. For those that don't know, this band has members of the ESSEX GREEN, of the famed Elephant Six collective.

Honestly, I like all of the Ladybug records and even without Sasha Bell (check out her solo record FINISHING SCHOOL)...this record is great. It's classic Ladybug...maybe a bit more country influenced. There are some incredible songs on here: the single, "Here Comes the Rain", along with "Terry" and "Always on the Telephone".

I highly recommend this CD for anyone who is a huge fan of Camera Obscura, Essex Green, the Clientele, Great Lakes, Neutral Milk Hotel, Apples in Stereo, the Elephant Six collective, etc. Good job Merge!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Music.......2007-06-16

Well, i'm a great fan of this band and certainly was quite nervous about their new record - would it be as great as their last one? Now I know: Can't Wait Another Day is just as georgeous as the other Ladybug Transistor albums. Really beautiful music with Gary Olson singing for the first time all songs (because Sasha Bell left for The Essex Green). To me, Can't Wait Another Day is one of the best records of the year.

5 out of 5 stars Some Great Songs.......2002-10-17

This album is a definite step up from their previous releasees, in terms of production and song-crafting. There are some gems of songs on this album, but there are also some less than stellar efforts. "The Great British Spring" reminds me of being in a park in London on a sunny day. The instrumentation gives a 60's retro feel to the songs, with pianos, guitars, horns, and drums. "Like a Summer Rain" and "Oceans in the Hall" are also great. However, "Today Knows" is a slow ballad which may drone on too long for some, and "The Swimmer" doesn't seem to match up with the quality of the other songs on this album. As a whole, the album works pretty well, and is one of my favorites.

5 out of 5 stars Pot sounds.......2000-09-04

Ok, that heading was just stupid, this is not pot music. This is one of the best records to come out since " The Beach boys love you". It's sooo beautiful and even though you might say this is sixties music, it's a very modern record. It's so uplifting to hear these young people with such a genuine love and respect for music. If Burt Bacharach and Brian Wilson ever worked together, this is what may have come out. But if you haven't seen this band live, do so now. They are even better live!

5 out of 5 stars Hatful of Pleasantries.......1999-11-07

Gary Olson and cohorts have composed, for this music aficionado's well tuned ear, some of the most lovely melodies and pop tunes to come out since.. well, since Belle & Sebastian. I wish them a long and prosperous career, rife with the lush melodic genius so generously shared with us here. One of the best albums of 1998. Truly a hidden treasure.

3 out of 5 stars retrofluff, inc........1999-10-06

there's some great moments on this record ("six times" -- wow!), and the band's refusal to believe that it could be anything but 1966 is admirable. but "pet sounds" this ain't....

5 out of 5 stars simpy the best.......2004-03-08

this is the best hard rock album ever! I've been a fan sinse 87. I think they have improved with every album, with the possible exception of firefly( although great in its own right) the more you listen to this disc the better it gets.Do yourself a favor, get this cd. then turn up your stereo as loud as you can handle it for "mouse trap"

4 out of 5 stars New sound, still captivating.......2004-01-20

Transistor gives a new edge to TNT's melodic talents. After going on hiatus since the early 90's, they came back into form with this album and it gives hints throughout the album as to what made TNT so popular with their fans the world over. Still great guitar work by LeTekro, and of course the powerful vocals and lyrics from top notch singing sensation Tony Harnell. Songs such as "Just Like God" which opens the album and "No Such Thing" are great songs among the ballads we've all come to love from TNT. Transistor gives a newer rock sound but still shines when it comes to musicianship and you can hear the 80's metal influence in certain tracks, and the whole album is full of upbeat songs that grasp your attention everytime you listen to a TNT album whether it be old or newer. Some may not like it as good as past albums such as (Knights of The New Thunder - Tell No Tales - Intuition). But Transistor is a great TNT album, and definately a great buy whether you're new to TNT or true to their metal roots.

4 out of 5 stars Better than I'd hoped........2003-02-28

Note: I'm not one for long reviews...

I'm a big TNT fan and was let down (a little) by "Firefly & Live". The live stuff was what I wanted, but the new stuff sounded forced.

"Transistor" does a better job of capturing the strengths of TNT while showing that they are trying to progress musically. There are modern rock overtones, but you can hear the talent (and heavy metal roots) that might have drawn you to the band.

Highlight? Tony's voice! He screams his fool head off and it's quite impressive. Nuno has many chances to shine as well...

If you're a fan I have to recommened this one. If you're just getting into the band, start with "Tell no Tales" or "Knights of the New Thunder" and go from there.

1 out of 5 stars This stuff is terrible!.......2002-07-07

No decent guitars, no decent vocal harmonies, nothing good on this cd. If you're a fan of the other TNT stuff, like Tell No Tales, Intuition, or Realized Fantasies, you're in for a dismal time. If you like hard-rock bands turning to electronics for help, due to a lack of inspiration or a need to try to keep up with the likes of Reznor or more recent bands, then you're in luck. Basically, no soul in this. It'd be great if bands like TNT could stick to what made 'em great before. However, other folks, like the Scorps, have done the same thing, so I guess it's no surprise, ... Others, like Dokken, have been able to evolve, but not succumb to the electronica sound. I guess you choose your audience, though, but I can't imagine this even appealing to those that like the electronic junk with no soul, as it is by a band with no experience in it. Sorry, had to mention soul twice...Have fun setting your beer on this plastic coaster.

5 out of 5 stars TNT Review.......2000-12-09

This is a great CD! It has everything you would expect from TNT and more. I just hope this isn't their last! I would love to see them live one last time, out here in L.A. Calif. I remember they tore up the Palace in Hollywood many years ago and I'll never forget it. Get this one, but you won't be disappointed with any of their music so get it all!!!

Great Band with that wonderful singer Gary Olson and a beautiful record, which sounds very english -- please, don't believe that bad reviews before - just listen!!!

1 out of 5 stars Bad album.......2005-12-17

I like thier earlier stuff...it's not perfect, but it's kind of sweet. This is just plain bland music. Really really bad. They should be ashamed of themselves and hide in a cave. What were they thinking?

Mad mad bad.

5 out of 5 stars Don't miss it!!!!.......2004-02-11

Great band, great athmosphere, this is for sure an album that you can't miss if you are an indie music lover! The mosaic of delicate sounds, deep voice and excellent strings background make this album more better than Belle and Sebastian last record.
The Ladybug athmosphere remind me the black and white french movies from the 60s. Fantastic!!!!!

2 out of 5 stars Not So Hot.......2003-12-08

...And that's a generous 2 stars...OK, perhaps I'm not a big fan of their sound, but I find it hard to recommend anything about this disc. It's mellow for sure, and a little twangy, but you can't call it alt-country. The lead singer pretty much proves that just about anybody with a voice can be a singer. There are no outstanding performances here. What's all the fuss about this band??? You'll probably end up doing what I did and listen to it a few times....but how can a disc like this be anything more than that, to anybody?????

4 out of 5 stars Great soundtrack for the fall.......2003-10-10

This is the first Ladybug Transistor album that I have heard, so I can't compare it with any earlier releases. With that said, I think it's good. Track 5 "Choking on Air" is by far my favorite song off this album. Its a very visual song (if that makes any sense) but I think you have to hear it to understand.

If you are not familiar with this band, I would compare it to Belle & Sebastian's newest record "Dear Catastrophe Waitress" - both have a variety of singers (both male and female) with that sunny 70's AM rock feel. I really love Sasha Bell's voice, so I'm also planning on getting Essex Green's "Long Goodbye" to hear her contributions to that cd.

I rated this CD 4 stars out of 5 because I enjoy it and it definately has many strong songs, but there are a few songs that I'm not entirely fond of. Still, 4 out of 5 is good!

"XTC live" has been an oxymoron ever since the band's stage-fright-stricken frontman, Andy Partridge, collapsed during a U.S. tour in 1982. Freed of the burden of touring and reproducing their material live, XTC spent their next five recordings gussying-up their sound--layering piano, strings, and ethereal harmonies where herky-jerky chord changes and caterwauling vocals used to reside. Transistor Blast is a heavy dose of early XTC, the Swindon, England, postpunk quartet who couldn't even spell "cello." Disc 3 features 1978 and '79 live takes of early singles such as "Life Begins at the Hop" and "This is Pop," as well as less-recognizable--and often less-listenable--album tracks along the lines of "Danceband" and "Neon Shuffle." Disc 4, a re-release of the band's legendary 1980 Hammersmith Palais show (previously only available as an import), best illustrates the dynamic, hyperkinetic live band that was once XTC. Discs 1 and 2 erect a bridge between the band's early and later material. Recorded live for BBC Radio, the 25 tracks are jumbled chronologically but still flow. Devoid of their elaborate arrangements and syrupy production, songs such as 1986's "Another Satellite" fit nicely after the likes of 1978's "I'm Bugged." --Bill Crandall

4 out of 5 stars Great live energy...Somewhat stale studio reworkings.......2000-03-11

For any long-time XTC fans who are wondering about their 'live-playing' days but never had a chance to see them perform, CDs 3 and 4 provide the answer. CD3, from the early Barry Andrews days, is an engaging blast of colorful, carnival energy. These early songs, soaring with fast-paced goofiness, but lacking in the maturity that the group began to develop with 'Drums and Wires', require and thrive on that energy. CD4 combines the live energy with improved musicianship and Colin Moulding and Andy Partridge's maturing songwriting skills that developed after the arrival of Dave Gregory. Overall it seems to me that XTC was indeed an excellent live act, despite Partridge's many remarks since stating the contrary. As far as the BBC studio outtakes, I find many of them to be relatively flat and lacking compared with the original album versions - which goes to show that some of the production values and studio effects put into albums like 'English Settlement' and 'Oranges and Lemons' were not for naught.

3 out of 5 stars Dated Early History Plagues XTC Box Set.......1999-04-01

Unfortunately, before "Drums and Wires", XTC's first two records ("White Music" and "Go 2")were bouncy, somewhat disoriented, synth new-wave music. It sounded like a good idea at the time, but the new-wave sound has not held up well over time, which is what burdens an otherwise interesting document on the career of one of pop music's most interesting and continually evolving bands. Even XTC themselves must have realized their early sound was going nowhere fast and replaced the synthesizer with a guitar in 1979. The result was a decade of satisfying and consistently catchy and intelligent records. What makes this box set essential, of course, is the live music, a rarity since XTC has not toured in nearly 20 years. For the uninitiated, the "Upsy Daisy Assortment" is the place to start.

5 out of 5 stars A PERFECT COLLECTION FOR A PERFECT BAND.......1999-01-31

BEING AN OWNER OF ALL OF XTC'S ALBUMS, I AM ALWAYS EXCITED WHEN MY FAVORITE BAND RELEASES SOMETHING NEW--EVEN A GREATEST HITS COLLECTION SUCH AS TRANSISTOR BLAST. HAVING ALL OF THESE GREAT SONGS ON FOUR CONVIENENT CD'S IS A FAN'S GREATEST WISH COME TRUE. NICELY PACKAGED AND WELL THOUGHT OUT IN ITS FORMAT, TRANSISTOR BLAST TAKES THE OLD FAN, AS WELL AS THE NEW LISTENER TO XTC, THROUGH THEIR TWENTY YEAR CAREER--FROM THE EARLY, HARD-EDGED BEGINNINGS, TO THEIR MORE POLISHED, BUT NONETHELESS UNIQUE SOUNDS OF THE EARLY NINETIES. XTC'S MUSIC IS AS TIMELESS AS THEIR ORIGINALITY--THIS BAND ALWAYS SEEMS TO TOP ITS LAST ALBUM CONSISTANTLY. WITH THE SOON-TO-BE RELEASED APPLE VENUS, THIS IS A NICE SEGUE TO WHAT LIES AHEAD FOR THE TRUE XTC FAN. HATS OFF TO ANDY PARTRIDGE AND THE BOYS FOR THIS TREAT. I ONLY WONDER WHY THE DUKES OF STRATOSPHERE DIDN'T COLABORATE WITH THEM ON THIS ONE...OH WELL, WE CAN STILL DREAM.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Example of band at their performing peak!.......1998-12-11

Wonderful set of derivitive versions of XTCs songs. 2 Live CDs plus 2 discs of Peel session versions = a Dynamite value for the money. A must buy for every XTC fan.

4 out of 5 stars Terrific live summation of XTC's music.......1998-11-29

If you don't own anything by XTC this probably isn't the place to start. Instead, I'd direct you to any of their classic albums(THE BIG EXPRESS, SKYLARKING, BLACK SEA, ENGLISH SETTLEMENT, etc.), but for the XTC fan this is a gift from the band. These live tracks recorded for the BBC both during their touring days and after Andy's "breakdown" on stage during the English Settlement tour gives a rare insight into the band's creative process, dynamics as well as their songwriting development over time. About half of the material from this boxed set has been previously released and available as imports from the UK. The most startling tracks are those recorded when the band was a four piece and still performing. The pre-Gregory tracks featuring keyboardist Barry Andrews are notable for the wild energy and the unique sound that Andrews' fun house keyboard style. The pre-Dave configuration also allows Andy Partridge to shine as a guitarist. Although not as melodic or accomplished as later guitarist Dave Gregory, he brought a sense of fun and energy to the band's sound that would be elaborated on by Dave Gregory. Also, as early as the songs from their first and second albums, one can hear the unusual and creative approach Colin Moulding was applying to his bass playing. After Andrews left, guitarist Dave Gregory brought a more refined quality to the band's sound. Gregory, a highly underrated guitarist, delivers intense, brief solos that brings both an edge, as well as, more melodic feel to Andy and Colin's songs. Without the arrival of Dave, it is doubtful if the band would have become quite as accomplished. Although he never played a role as songwriter, Dave brought boundless energy, arranging skills(frequently writing the string and chart arrangements for songs)and melodic ideas that enriched both Andy and Colin's compositions. That said, the live versions of material after Terry Chambers left suffer a bit because they were using a drum machine. Sometimes this undercuts the strength of the song(as in "You're the wish(you are)I had") and on other occasions it brings a very different texture and feel to the material allowing further expansion of the songs original melody("Seagulls screaming kiss her, kiss her", "Scarecrow People"). There are a few instances where the starkness of the arrangement brings a welcomed rough edge to the material. Colin Moulding's "One of the millions", a tab overproduced on ORANGES & LEMONS, benefits from this stripped down approach. It's almost like listening to an elaborate demo. The 1980 recording of the band live at the Hammersmith Palais, previously available as an import, shows XTC flying through versions of their material up to and including BLACK SEA. The band plays terrifically and one could argue that, of all the band's of the new wave era, XTC was the most talented and the best of their generation. XTC was a bottlerocket of a band live. Although some of this material has been previously released, it is well worth the cost to pick up the unreleased material, as well as, having the comments of Andy and Colin on their songs and performances. What could have improved the box would have been impressions from Barry Andrews, Terry Chambers and, the latest member to leave, Dave Gregory. All three were instrumental in helping Andy and Colin develop the sound they had long sought for the band and, in the case of Dave Gregory, still a part of the band's sound. TRANSISTOR BLAST presents a well rounded view of the band's development and, what's more, a terrific opportunity to imagine what the band would sound like if they ever toured again. It'll also keep most XTC fans(like this one) happy until Andy and Colin finally finish their latest album.

5 out of 5 stars You won't regret it!.......2006-11-22

This CD is EXCELLENT! This is not the CD with the Scrubs theme song--that album is "All the Time in the World." This album, in my opinion, is much better. I only like a few songs on the other album, and feel that I wasted my money when I could have just downloaded "Superman" from Itunes. However, I love almost all the songs on this album--especially track 10 "Overkill"--which features Collin Hays.

2 out of 5 stars Unremarkable album.......2002-12-04

Lazlo Bane's 1996 remake of Men At Work's "Overkill" is one of the best remakes of the 1990's. Featuring a cameo vocal by the former 'Men At Work' frontman, this version of the song is clearly a superior rock-and-roll version of the original. That said, the rest of "11 Transistor" is generally a passable but unremarkable garage-rock album. There are a couple of above-average tracks (only slightly above-average), but on the whole the disc is not a memorable production. Certainly nothing on the album comes close to the polished "Overkill" remake.

Lazlo Bane's frontman was a former member of "School of Fish", a band who's first album, the self-titled "School of Fish", is still one of my personal favorites 10 years after its release.

I suggest saving your money on "11 Transistor" and instead making an investment in "School of Fish" and look for the 1997 promotional CD single of "Overkill" which includes three variations of this excellent remake.

3 out of 5 stars Lazlo Bane: 11 transistor.......2002-01-27

Sadly I was a little dissapointed in this CD. There are a small handfull of good songs, nothing to scream about, and a whole lot of pitiful songs on this CD. I may need to listen to it again, but to listen to it once was hard enough. Sorry Lazlo, I really like your 'Superman' song, in fact, I love it and was hoping the CD would have it on it and other songs like it.

5 out of 5 stars This CD is a Must.......1999-12-17

This is one of those rare CDs where every song is fantastic, and you won't tire of multiple listenings. "Flea Market Girl", "I'll do Everything" - literally, every song is a gem. I can't listen to "1975" without jumping around my house! Buy this CD and prepare for happiness...

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding power pop with a melancholy twist........1999-07-02

Full disclosure: I have a very very indirect connection to the band. In fact I got the CD free from a friend of the band who I know well. My initial reaction when he gave me the disc: "Oh great. I'm sure this is going to suck."

Surprise! This is a GREAT CD and one which I have listened to many, many, many times. To my ears, it combines elements of the Replacements' later albums, XTC, and Men at Work (!). Not the usual stuff. But excellent. Where's the follow up?

5 out of 5 stars If you buy a guitar over 40 pounds...you're mad........2004-03-13

I'm telling you, Bis is one of the top bands of the 90's. And it's a shame that they didn't get much attention until they did the Powerpuff Girls theme. I feel bad for just now getting into Bis' music, I haven't been this into a band since System of a Down back in '98/'99. I wouldn't call Bis punk, ska, rock, or pop, they're more like happy punk with some popish music once in a while. Don't let that make you think less of them (most people think they're a J-pop band which is pretty funny), because Bis is a category of their own when it comes to musical genres.

You won't be finding any acoustic songs about love, deep ballads that tell stories or anything like that here, no. Instead, you get songs about how it's funny how your life depends upon your waist line, dinosaur germs, how people are mindless, and if you buy a guitar over 40 pounds, you're mad. Popstar Kill has to be one of the funnest songs I've ever heard. It's so happy, yet angry at the same time. I love how Manda's voice changes from the verses to the chorus. You can really tell that she hates the little blonde pop singers. While a lot of the tracks here are fun, the lyrics are pretty meaningful, unlike every other band that came out around the same time. The music is damn good as well. They don't just use the same chords over and over again, but actually throw in a solo here and there (even if it isn't the most impressive thing in the world), which is a nice change.

Tracks that stood out the most to me were:

-Tell it to the Kids
-Starbright Boy
-Popstar Kill
-Antiseptic Poetry
-Skinny Tie Sensurround
-Monstarr
-Photo Shop
-X-Defect
-Lie Detector Test
-Dinosaur Germs
-Team Theme

...*looks over list* *realizes that's most of the album* Well...as you can see, it's a good album.

As long as you go into this not expecting them to sound like x band, you shouldn't be disappointed. I highly reccomend you get their collection of EP's: "Intendo" too. That's what I got into them with, and that album is pure out flawless. But if you get this and don't like it for some reason, I'll buy it from you, because it's that good of an album. Oh, there's a weird hidden track at 3:42 through 'Team Theme'. It's -very- strange, but it sounds like they're making fun of some of the rock bands in that year with the way they sing it.

TRAVOLTA AIN'T GOT NOTHING ON ME.

This is a great album, one of the most fun of all time. Songs like "X-Defect" and "Antiseptic Poetry" have been known to get stuck in my head for days at a time, and any fans of "indie-pop" need to hear this record.

5 out of 5 stars it means encore, the Disco King told me.......2000-02-05

Bis is fun, smart if not intellectual, & very danceable. Having met them on both their visits to Australia I have found them to be nice w/ no rock star pretentions. I don't listen to them all the time but when I do, i don't regret it. This is a diverse & amusing album & you can see that a lot of effort & enthusiasm went into making it. Monstarr for instance is a good anthem for those who don't care what others think of their image etc....

3 out of 5 stars The ultimate in disco-core.......1999-09-14

Bis are a fun band. They make you think, but above all they make you wanna dance. Comparisons could be made to a less annoying and abrasive Atari Teenage Riot with their techno-beats and punk rock guitars and male-female vocals, or Nation Of Ulysses with their youth-power anthems. The drawback with this album is that it's much too long. If they pared it down to about 12 songs, it'd be a great album. As it is, it's just well above average.

5 out of 5 stars High-Energy Fusion Music.......1999-08-12

During one of my friend's "musical exchanges," he lent me a copy of Bis' "This is Teen-C Power!" I immediately fell in love with the three teens from Scotland, and scoured my local music stores looking for anything by this amazing band. After a long search, I found this CD, sprung the money, and initiated myself into the Teen-C Nation. This CD is a 73 minute stomp and romp through punk/disco fusion, complete with piercingly satirical lyrics and a charmingly skewed view of the world. You won't be dissapointed unless you're a Skinny Tie :)
