Customer Reviews:
some brilliant renditions, but can't quite all mix together.......2006-10-19
In all, there are some brilliant interpretations of Weill here. I am a fan of Cave's "Mack the Knife" and David Johansen's "Alabama Song," and how can someone NOT like Lotte Lenya herself on "Pirate Jenny" and the drolling of the immortal William S. Burroughs talking through "What Keeps Mankind Alive?"
But other tracks feel to be just too short of brilliance. I love that Lou Reed tries to turn "September Song" into a kind of rock ballad, almost a VU "It Was a Pretty Good Year," but the rendition seems a little short of energy and falls flat after a while. Elvis Costello, though magnificent as an overall artist, just doesn't bring new life to "Lost in the Stars."
Perhaps the problem in the end that the choices were a little too much of the Top 40 Weill (if there really can be such a term). These are songs that have for a long time been regarded as the best of Weill, and it might have furthered the purpose of his music to find new gems and bring them into the sunlight.

Ain't we Hip?!!?.......2003-07-23
The mystery here is that there's a perfectly good compilation from the 80s, "Lost in the Stars: the Music of Kurt Weill", featuring many of the same songs--and, if I'm not mistaken some of the same performers. That's the one you want. Too bad it's OP.

A surprise from Bear Family: the Elvis CD I've always wanted!.......2006-09-12
Short of a collection of Otis Blackwell's vintage Elvis demos, this is THE dream disc for students of Elvis' style and influences. It is instantly evident that Elvis was heavily influenced by Don Robertson's vocal stylings. If you compare any of the demos here with the released Elvis version, it's eerie to note how proficiently Presley mimics every quaver and swoop of the songwriter's voice.
Elvis was certainly more than a stylistic parrot. He had a great ear, and Robertson possessed an uncanny knack for writing sympathetic songs. They complemented Elvis' singing style, his sense of drama and rhythm, and his charisma.
There are several songs here that Elvis didn't record. All are from acetate demos, save the first track, "Stand-In," from a 1962 RCA single in full "Nashville Sound" mode. These are some of my favorites, as they allow me to appreciate Robertson's abilities most clearly. "Hummingbird," "Feather In The Wind," "What Now, What Next, Where To" and the moody, minor-keyed "Road To Heartbreak" are all major killers.
The sound quality might shock some listeners. The acetate discs from which 25 tracks derive are gritty, sometimes distorted, and often pebbled with clicks and scratches. Jurgen Crasser did a great job of cleaning these up without compromising their essential sound. Thus, you are in for a compelling but imperfect listening experience.
My biggest complaint with Bear Family releases, of late, is that the liner notes are generally weak. Not so with this disc. Robertson provides in-depth anecdotes on each of the songs, and is extensively interviewed in Rudiger Bloemeke's long essay. Lots of great pictures, including several of Robertson with some fellow Nashville songwriting legends.
Anyone with a passion for country music and pop of the '50s and '60s needs this CD. You don't even have to like Elvis to appreciate its portrait of a sincere, talented songwriter at his best.
Disc comes in a slickly designed digipak foldout. Bear Family's sense of graphic design is rudimentary, to say the least, but it's usually functional. This is one of their better-looking packages in quite some time.
A MUST for ELVIS fans!!!.......2003-09-11

The rockin' never stops at the "hop" as we pay tribute to the "King" of rock 'n' roll, ELVIS PRESLEY, with carefully selected hits guaranteed to SHAKE, RATTLE AND ROLL! Our ultra-talented young artists bring their own adorable interpretations to these classic songs under Emmy winning producer, Dennis Scott's direction. Elvis is IN the building with this delightful collection of songs certain to create a party at your house with just the right mix of nostalgia thrown in! Hound Dog Baby, Let's Play House Shake, Rattle and Roll Heartbreak Hotel Blue Suede Shoes All Shook Up Party (Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear Stuck On You Don't Be Cruel Jailhouse Rock We're Gonna MoveAmazon.com
It's been done before but never this adorably: Music for Little People's Blue Suede Shoes: Elvis Songs for Kids invokes the spirit of the King with 12 rockin' tunes, all belted with gusto by a gang of kids--some, by the sound of it, as young as age 6. Mostly they tackle the megahits. "Hound Dog," "Don't Be Cruel," and "Jailhouse Rock" all get covered--but if the song selection isn't much of a shocker, what is surprising is the soul some of these slick kiddie crooners deliver. Both "All Shook Up" and "Stuck on You" are powerhouses of the kind that send visions of swiveling little hips and painted-on sideburns swirling in your head. Other selections, such as "(Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear" and "Baby, Let's Play House," are performed in a sweeter, cutesier style, but that's not to say they're weak by comparison. Nor do they contribute to a jumbled, uneven mix. Instead, the suit-yourself interpretations lend this album the feel of a junior talent show, the kind nobody wants to judge because every contestant deserves to be keeper of the crown. Grown-up Elvis enthusiasts with kids will be first in line to pick up a copy of Blue Suede Shoes (what better way to be sure their hero doesn't leave the building, at least for another generation?), but anybody of a mind to make music history a chapter in his or her child's education ought to check it out, too. That doesn't mean kids too young to swallow such a culturally significant discussion ought to be excluded, though. One spin of this thoroughly rollicking album and they're sure to do what comes naturally: Shake, rattle, and roll to a handful of songs that set the world on fire. --Tammy La GorceCustomer Reviews:
