Jimmy Buffett may have made his millions, but that doesn't mean that he has eased up on his workload. After releasing 33 albums, mounting grueling annual tours, and fashioning an entire industry and lifestyle out of his signature song "Margaritaville," Buffett trots out this two-CD collection. Yet, Meet Me in Magaritaville, which spans 30 years, isn't merely a retread of his long, storied career. Buffett has written two new songs for the package and re-recorded six alternative versions of fan favorites (including a moving version of "The Captain and the Kid," which he included for his ailing father, who died shortly after the album's release). He's also added two new cover songs--a spicy bossa nova version of Fred Neil's "Everybody's Talking" and the Beach Boys' "Sail on Sailor"--as well four live tracks, which shows the singer at his best, conjuring up his own Yuppie Atlantis, an idyllic place where no one has to wear shoes, the sun is always shining, the bar never closes, and Junior Mints are always available at every cinema. A must-have collection for every Parrothead (or aspiring Parrothead), if only for Buffett's track-by-track descriptions. --Jaan UhelszkiCustomer Reviews:

I highly recommend this album to anyone who enjoys slipping away to Margaritaville for a little while. It's music that crosses the generation gap. I'm in my 40's, my parents are in their mid - 60's and my daughter is a teenager, and we all enjoy Jimmy Buffett. If you purchase this album, you won't be disappointed.

Worthy Purchase.......2006-11-25
I got this CD because of "You can call me Al", heard the other tracks and was blown away. Notable tracks include "Mother And Child Reunion", "Adios Hermanos" - (that is based on the true story of the Capeman Murders. For more on the Capeman Murders, google "Salvador Agron"), "Spirit Voices" and "Late in the Evening".
Worthy purchase
Enjoyable.......2006-08-22
Excellent collection marred only by some missing tracks still a great single disc collection of Simon's best.......2006-08-15
We get two of the strongest tracks from Simon's first album and they were singles as well. "Mother and Child Reunion" and "Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard" both demonstrate that Simon was making World Music long before the term was created. "Kodachrome" and "Loves Me Like a Rock" were strong singles from Simon's second album and they are aided by a wistful ballad "Something So Right" covered by Annie Lennox which is probably why it was included. "50 Ways To Leave Your Lover" and "Still Crazy After All These Years" were highlights from Simon's third solo album. Missing in action is "My Little Town" a Simon & Garfunkel "reunion" single that both men put on their respective albums. It still should be here as it's a great song.
Although "One Trick Pony" isn't Simon's best album is one or two omissions ("How the Heart Approaches What It Yearns", "Oh Marion") that should have been included from that album besides the brilliant "Late in the Evening". "Slip Slidin' Away" is from Simon's first collection "Greatest Hits, Etc". What's missing here is the brilliant "Stranded in a Limousine" (which incidently DOES show up as a bonus track on "One Trick Pony"). All definitely deserve to be here. Really this should have been a full two disc set with the live tracks thrown on to the second CD with these other tracks.
We get the powerful "Hearts and Bones" the title track from Simon's fourth solo album (fifth if you count the Paul Simon Songbook a collection of S&G songs he recorded before the duo broke through)but I miss "Allergies" which, from what I recall, was a single. The brilliant "Graceland" is well represented with "Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes", "The Boy in the Bubble", "Graceland" and "You Can Call Me Al" all strong songs that got considerable airplay. The selections from "Rhythm of the Saints" is perfect except for the single "The Obvious Child" which seemed like an obvious inclusion on this set.
We close out the album with "Adios Hermanos" from "Songs from the Caveman" and two tunes from Simon's "The One". Both are solid selections overall. Early editions of this terrific album come with a second disc with live tracks featuring "American Tune", "Duncan","The Coast", "Mrs. Robinson" and "Bridge Over Troubled Water" live.
"Shining Like a National Guitar" features "The Obvious Child" if you want that track as well as "Bernadette", "Take Me To the Madrdi Gras", "Trailways Bus", "Rene and Georgette Magritte with Their God After the War" all of which aren't collected here. That album is missing some great material that's included here so, again, between those tracks the ones I mentioned and the live tracks we could have had a perfect "Best of". There is also a two disc "Best of" available as an important which I'd recommend. It digs into the Simon & Garfunkel catalog as well making it, aside from the boxed set, the single set with the most depth (although it lacks anything from Simon's last two albums).
Despite these minor flaws this is probably the best single collection of Simon's best songs available and very generous at that. Definitely worth picking up particularly if you want an album that has the bulk of his best album tracks and single all together in one spot.
Yet Another Paul Simon Anthology.......2006-07-15
I wonder, though, about that five-track bonus disc. Is the live version of "American Tune" the same one which appeared on a briefly-available "best of" collection from Simon called "Greatest Hits etc.", which was primarily noteworthy for its inclusion of the track (not available elsewhere, so far as I know) "Stranded In a Limousine"? I always liked that version of "American Tune" better than either the studio version, or the live version from "Live Rhymin'".
But the (even more briefly-available) CD of "Greatest Hits etc." sounds terrible--as do most CDs from the early digital era. (Nothing especially bad about this release in particular: producers, engineers and presssing plants just didn't know how to make good CDs yet.)
If it IS that version, in a better-mastered form: that alone would likely be reason enough for me to buy yet another Simon collection. In the meantime, I'm more likely to spend my money on something new like Surprise.
Five stars because any collection of Paul Simon songs is bound to be good, even though I personally might not need it.

A great Collection.......2007-06-28
Greatest Hits: compilations for fans or good opportunities to introduce one's work to non - but potential- ones?.......2007-03-18
I am not a loyal Alanis fan, I simply like the texture of her voice, and her music belongs to the genre I prefer (something that I personally would describe as acoustic rock). Tracks like 'Hands clean', 'Crazy', 'Uninvited' and my favourite 'Thank you' were all included; plus, I found 'Let's do it' irresistibly cute - and surprisingly colourful for Alanis' 'repertoire'. It is not improbable at all that I might have missed a lot of great songs that were not included in the compilation - I guess this is the challenge with greatest hits albums.
I can't really speak for those that have been following her career, but for greatest hits' collectors or for those that have generally appreciated Alanis' work through the years I would recommend the CD, it is representative of her music alright.
I would also recommend Sarah McLachlan's 'Mirrorball' and, if you are really into soft/acoustic rock' go for Elisa's albums 'Pipes and Flowers' and Pearl Days.
PERFECT ALBUM - but some seem to Not understand the point of Greatest Hits albums.......2007-03-12
GH albums do NOT present songs that either (a) never got radio play or (b) got played but flopped, because the audience did not like them.
Simple as that, and I have to say I am EXTREMELY happy with this album. It presents the "best of the best" songs Alanis ever made, without including a lot of junk I've never heard. ------ It's also perfect so I don't have to waste a ~$100 going out and buying all the separate albums. I can spend a SMALL amount of money, and get the songs I remember hearing (on the radio) during the last 15+ years.
PERFECT.
Like the curate's egg, good in places.......2007-03-08
In fairness, she did well. The songs, mostly from "Pill", were played competently and agressively. She sort-of gallumphed around the stage, yodelling away with the best of them, occasionally bending almost double to give it some on the harmonica, of which more later. She was endearing and brave, and I rather liked her show, as did the crowd.
What of this CD, then? Well, it's a very mixed bag. At her best, she writes sensible and thoughtful words, sometimes somewhat feminist, like a less angst-ridden P J Harvey. At her worst, that yodelling and seventh/octave vocal tic can become incredibly irritating. The Columbian lass Shakira also has that irritating sub-yodel in her voice, and Dido does that tiresome actave/senth yodel too. Alanis has a strong voice that could cut tin so I wish she would not do this.
This is an odd collection and contains a few crackers and a few rather odd choices. The lowest point is when she is allowed to play harmonica on "Head over Feet", a nice song with sweet words. The harmonica break is unspeakably and irredeemably awful, and does the near-imposible in making Bob Dylan look accomplished in this field. "Let's do it, let's fall in love" is a very odd choice, but she carries it off well. "Simple together" is just lovely, softly sung and very moving indeed. "Hands Clean" and "ironic" are both absolutely smashing, but the rest is a powerful potion to take in one go.
The trouble with Alanis is that when she emotes she yodels, and when she sings it straight she is just fantastic. If you buy this, I suggest that you listen to it in bits. Alanis is chock-full of talent and there are moments of excellence: but, oh, that awful harmonica - took me back to Hyde Park.
Generally very good, but a few odd moments prevent this getting 4 stars. She has done better than this.
A good CD, but misses its goal........2007-03-06
All this is a pity, because Alanis might just be the greatest (female?) lyric (and song) writed in music industry at the moment - and to this, I'll add that I actually consider her much acclaimed "first" album Jagged Little Pill the least good of her releases! One could EASILY fill two CDs with amazing songs and make a much more satisfactory compilation than this one - and there would still be great songs one would have to leave out for lack of space.
My suggestion for an "Ultimate Collection" would run like this:
Disc 1 - Hits
1. 21 Things I Want In A Lover
2. 8 Easy Steps
3. Crazy
4. You Learn
5. Thank U
6. Ironic
7. Flinch (ok, this was not a hit, but it's an amazing song, and sits perfectly next to Ironic)
8. So Pure
9. Hand In My Pocket
10. Precious Illusions
11. Unsent
12. Head Over Feet
13. You Oughta Know
14. Sister Blister
15. Simple Together
16. Hands Clean
17. Joining You
18. Uninvited
19. Everything
Disc 2 - Favorites
1. All I Really Want
2. Narcissus
3. Baba
4. Doth I Protest Too Much
5. The Couch
6. Can't Not
7. Spineless
8. Bent 4 U
9. Sorry 2 Myself
10. Excuses
11. That Particular Time
12. Are You Still Mad
13. I Was Hoping
14. This Grudge
15. Surrendering
16. Wunderkind
17. Utopia

Songs that stand the test of time.......2007-03-17
Great collection focuses on late Sixties-Early Seventies.......2006-12-31
I believe that this collection will satisfy the fans of the early, primal Diamond, the Neil Diamond that used to rock AM Radio. This has the original studio versions of many of the early hits: Crunchy Granola Suite, Solitary Man, Cracklin' Rosie, Sweet Caroline, Done Too Soon, Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show, Holly Holy, and more.
This raises another issue with Diamond collections: Many times, he is much better live than he is in the studio! The studio versions of Crunchy Granola Suite and Brother Love just cannot compare with the ones on Hot August Night.
Thankfully, this cd has the awesome version of Cherry, Cherry from the aforementioned Hot August Night.
But for the most part, if you want the best from the studio, you have it right here. I love it. But on the whole, 9 times out of 10, I put on Hot August Night or Live in America.
A great CD full of classics.......2006-03-26

Heaven knows, the Scotsman born Donovan Leitch was ripe for ridicule, even when he was hitting the charts with regularity. He was the ultimate flower child, and his airier pronouncements made cynics want to tighten up those love beads around his neck. Listening to Troubadour, however, it's striking how versatile, melodic, and agreeable most of his material sounds decades after "Mellow Yellow" has faded into a jaundiced yellow. Clearly under the sway of Bob Dylan early on in his career, Donovan nevertheless was capable of directing his reverence into something as enchanting as "Catch the Wind." Amping up as the '60s progressed, he assembled a series of psychedelic-pop classics, including "Season of the Witch," the "Hey Jude"-like sing-along "Atlantis," and the uncharacteristically driving "Hurdy Gurdy Man" (the latter features three-quarters of what was to become Led Zeppelin providing stellar support). This two-disc anthology may be more Donovan than some desire, but the booklet, seven previously unreleased tracks, and expansive perspective it provides makes it a more-than-worthy overview for those who take their paisley folk-rock with a beatific smile. --Steven StolderAlbum Description

A fine introduction to the work of Donovan.......2006-09-20
I first bought this set when it was released and there were few enough Donovan CDs to be had; Sony had only seen fit to put Sunshine Superman, Hurdy Gurdy Man, Barabajagal and Greatest Hits out, and sad to say, they are still woefully deficient in their reissue of his catalogue (although Troubadour forgave a multitude of sins, as the Try for the Sun box has also done). Troubadour gives you two wonderful Donovan demos, "London Town" (Don's take on Tim Hardin's "Green Rocky Road") and "Cod'ine" (an early anti-drug song, and one of two Buffy Sainte-Marie songs Don covered, the other being the more famous "Universal Soldier," also included here), and his three hit singles for Pye/Hickory: "Catch the Wind," "Colours" and the aforementioned "Universal Soldier." From there, it launches full-on into his Epic years (1966-76); for me, this collection truly opened my eyes to all Don's music, and the rarities were often the most revealing as to his talents. "Breezes of Patchulie," an outtake from the Sunshine Superman sessions, was nothing like its title would suggest--not some hippie dream, but real folkish angst with sitar and violin to add some colour. A decent selection of songs from the Mellow Yellow LP and A Gift From a Flower to a Garden, which hadn't been available at that point, plus tracks from Open Road, Cosmic Wheels, Essence to Essence, 7-Tease and Slow Down World, all of which had been out of print at the time, were also welcome additions, and only Don's best songs (no embarrassments like the oft-cited "Intergalactic Laxative"--even the title is embarrassing) were included. Of the later rarities, "What the Soul Desires" was my favourite, and one I still play for myself on my guitar even now.
In 1992, this was a much-needed career overview of Donovan's work; even now, in 2006, it's the best set of classic Donovan tracks. For the completist or rabid Donovan fan, I would recommend the box set Try for the Sun, as it gives you loads of rarities and tracks otherwise only available on imports (e.g. the HMS Donovan album, never given a US release) and dares to cover his comebacks (a track each from the Rick Rubin-produced Sutras from 1996 and 2004's Beat Cafe, which I also recommend highly), plus adding the film There Is an Ocean on DVD. But for those wanting more than just the obvious hits, but less than a real vault-raider, Troubadour is just what the doctor ordered.
Um... not a huge fan.......2006-09-12

Everything Tori.......2007-05-15
Almost Perfect : She should've done this earlier.......2007-04-25
For those of you to whom this set is new, this is a 5 Disc Collection of Tori revisiting her older work, remastering select tracks, and adding on unreleased tracks and B-Sides. Some of the song selection is dubious at best (and even on hifi equipment, their supposed 'remastering' is indeed questionable) but as a box-set its hard to find anything more coherent and relevant than this.
I still cannot believe Tori has been around for so long. For those of us who have followed her work since 1992, this is a rare treat worth buying. If you're new to Tori, pick up her "Tales of a Librarian" CD and start from there.
Watch out for : "Zero Point", "Not David Bowie" and "Dolphin Song" - all 3 have never been heard before this release.
Added Bonus : "Hungarian Wedding Song" - a short song that I consider one of Tori's best finally finds prominence here on this set
Best CD : I love Disc 5, but the reworked "Little Earthquakes" CD (Disc 1) just blew me away. That album and its content is classic even all these years later.

She's no David Bowie.......2007-02-19
I once liked most of the material contained in this set.
But Tori Amos is no David Bowie.
Except for a few songs, her music has not aged gracefully. Most of the songs in this set are boring to me now.
Plus, Tori Amos has a self-righteous and condescending personality which I cannot stomach anymore.
Furthermore, Y Kant Tori Read is one of her better albums, but this boxed set does not contain any songs from that album. Tori Amos says she hates that album. But that's probably because it was not a hit. So she is embarrassed about it. If Y Kant Tori Read had received the overwhelming acclaim that Little Earthquakes (her worst album) received, then she probably would have a higher opinion of Y Kant Tori Read.
(In fairness, not everyone can be David Bowie.)

If you're only going to own one Kinks CD..........2007-05-15
Great overview of the Kinks' tenure on Pye.......2006-03-16
This compilation covers the albums from the debut "Kinks" through "Lola versus Powerman and the Moneygoround Part One," but a substantial portion of these tracks were standalone singles. That means that this collection hardly tells the whole story-- in fact, important albums like "The Kinks are the Village Green Preservation Society" and "Arthur or The Decline and Fall of the British Empire" are barely represented at all. But it also makes this disc a valuable resource for excellent non-album tracks like "Set Me Free" and "Autumn Almanac" that can be hard to find elsewhere with such crisp sound quality.
I recommend this compilation to Kinks newbies and hardcore fans alike, because it's both a competent primer on the band's first decade as well as a great source for some hard-to-find music. Just be sure you also pick up the albums, at least from "Face to Face" onward, to get the full picture of this indispensable band.
Best Kinks Collection.......2006-01-23
All the sixties classics.......2004-09-02
This contains all the classic sixties songs including You really got me, All day and all of the night, Tired of waiting for you, Dedicated follower of fashion, Well respected man, Sunny afternoon, Waterloo sunset, Autumn almanac, Days, Lola and Apeman. It also includes Dave's two solo UK hits - Death of a clown and Susannah's still alive.
The set is presented in chronological order beginning with their cover of Long tall Sally, a song that demonstrates their musical roots in R+B. They didn't stick to R+B for very long, becoming more of a mainstream pop group and continually changing their style thereafter. Nevertheless, their songs were always distinctive because of Ray's talent for making ordinary situations into extraordinary songs. My favorite Kinks song is Waterloo sunset, a huge UK hit but not an American hit. It is about romance at a railway station that I am familiar with, though I cannot possibly imagine what inspired Ray to write that song, but he was a genius.
The best tribute to the quality of their songs lies in the diversity of the covers that have been recorded by singers in several genres of music. Kirsty MacColl (Days), the Stranglers (All day and all of the night), Petula Clark (Days - and a French version of Well respected man), Cathy Dennis (Waterloo sunset, Sunny afternoon), Green day (Tired of waiting for you), Jimmy Buffett (Sunny afternoon), Van Halen (You really got me) and Barb Jungr (Waterloo sunset) are among those who have covered Kinks songs.
Despite the brilliance of some of the covers, here you get the chance to hear the original versions. If you just want a single CD of their sixties music, this one is as good as any you will find.
