5 out of 5 stars Definitive Scarlatti.......2007-05-26

I've been a Scarlatti fan since I discovered the Ralph Kirkpatrick recordings on Columbia when I was in high school--some 40 years ago. Over the years I have played some of them on the piano and collected numerous recordings, performed on both harpsichord and piano. I first purchased Scott Ross's complete collection after sampling the 3-CD Scarlatti Anthologie and being pleased with what I heard. After listening to about a third of the 34 CDs on which the 555 sonatas are recorded I can say that Scott Ross's performances equal or exceed anything I've heard from any other performer on harpsichord. There are recordings by other performers I rate very highly--Wanda Landowska's characterful pre-WW II recordings and Andras Schiff's superb piano recordings of the sonatas come to mind--but Scott Ross has it all. Meticulous accuracy, a truly engaging sense of rhythm--so critical in bringing out the character of the sonatas, a superb sense of the Spanish idiom Scarlatti uses, elegant ornamentaion, a masterful selection of stops, and the wonderful recorded harpsichord sound all make this set a thoroughly satisfying musical experience for the Scarlatti lover. Bringing all of this quality to the formidable task of recording all of Scarlatti's 555 sonatas is a tremendous achievement and a true service to the music loving public. In addition to the pleasure of having such a treasure trove of great Scarlatti performances, the complete collection has afforded me the oppotunity to discover many elegant gems among Scarlatt's lesser known sonatas--the kind that stay in my head days after hearing them. That Ross died at the relatively early age of 38 was a real loss. If you're a Scarlatti fan, treat yourself to this complete collection. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing accomplishment.......2005-10-20

This recent re-release of Scott Ross's complete recordings of Scarlatti's keyboard sonatas is truly a great a accomplishment. The 34 CDs contain all 555 sonatas. The vast majority are played by Ross on the harpsichord, or harpsichord's I should say. Four different harpsichords were used, one Italian and three French. While various groups of Sonatas might sound a bit different it doesn't take away from the experience at all.

And what an experience it is. Ross's harpsichord playing is bright and lively when required, relaxed and subdued at other times. While it's hard to imagine that Ross was able to become intimately familiar with 555 sonatas over the year it took to record them, his performances do not show any signs of boredom. The sonatas are overall focused and well performed.

In addition to the hundreds of harpsichord sonatas, there are also recordings of Scarlatti's five sonatas with string and woodwing accompaniment as well as his three organ sonatas. All keyboard parts are played by Ross.

The packaging of this set is very compact. Each CD is in a thick paper cover, the whole of the set in a single box. There is also a 255 page booklet that contains a short description of nearly every sonata. Additionally there is an interview with Ross from 1986.

This is a wonderful set for any fan of Scarlatti and Ross. And at the price, it would even be worth it for anyone who enjoys Baroque harpsichord music but isn't familiar with Scarlatti. I highly recommend this set.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent CD!.......2007-05-31

Poor Hummel. Taught by Mozart, Joseph Hayden, and Antonio Salieri; friend of Beethoven, Schubert, Goethe, and Shiller; and immensely talented and prolific, Johann Hummel ought to be far better known than he is today. Perhaps in the century or so to come, he'll begin to get some well-deserved popular recognition, and this CD of his beautiful, melodious Piano Concerto in F major certainly won't hurt his chances. Although not as critically acclaimed as his Piano Concerto in A major (also on this CD), the F major concerto is a Romantic gem and can be viewed as the capstone of Hummel's long career. Howard Shelley is technically perfect and emotionally on target throughout this delightful CD.

4 out of 5 stars Hummel and Shelley.......2007-01-08

I purchased this cd for the Piano Concerto in A major which is a beautiful piece. I was also pleased with the first two selections on the cd. What makes all of this music a delight is the performance of Howard Shelley who plays with such clarity and feeling.
I would also like to recommend another cd with the Hummel/Shelley combination. It is Chandos 9558.

Actually, more like a CD single. Released around the same time their 'Alien 4' disc came out(see my review). Track listing: "Alien,I Am"(5:29), "Death Trap"(3:54), "Wastelands"(1:26)and "Are You Losing Your Mind?"(2:30). Heard somewhere this 4-track CDS was made primarily to showcase the band's current sound, with new guitarist/vocalist Ron Tree. Nice cover, but pretty much for Hawkwind completists.

S4 Sash! is the best album in the world!!!What can I say about it?
The songs are great....I like Luna Llena , Run and Ganbareh.Luna Llena is one of the greatest songs.Run feat. Boy George and Ganbareh are my favourite songs too and the other songs are not bad, really.I think that you must own this CD.

5 out of 5 stars 5 Right away to Sarah Brightman.......2005-01-07

Cross-over artists can either make a big hit, or a huge failure. Thankfully, Sarah Brightman shines like the sun on her trace/dance track here. Sash did an excellent job with the production on here, making Brightman's voice sore over the moving trace rifts. There are many other stand out tracks here, track number 2 is very well done, and so is the Boy George track. All in all this CD is very well put together. Give it a listen!

1 out of 5 stars Good and Bad.......2004-03-12

The album is great, from what I could hear.

The version that I rcvd was European, with some sort of copy protection that kept it from working consistently on my CD players. I attempted to rip it for MP3 playback, but was unable to do that either.

Ended up sending it back. As far as I am concerned, if I cannot play it, it is defective. Doing a quick analysis of the data, it does not conform to standards and should not even be called a CD.

Perhaps when it comes to the US it will not have this BS copy protection.

            5 out of 5 stars GWAH!!!!!!!.......2004-02-20

For all my peeps out there, this is the one album to own. Sash in the past has proven himself to becoming better and better with each new album, and here is the proof again!!! Better than Trillinium, than Life Goes On, and It's My Life. Each track has a bit of it's own feel to it. Lemme pull this album apart.

First we start with Ouverture, which gets everyone in the mood to tear the floor apart! This features TJ Davis singing, which is a blessing for all you TJ fans out there.

Second comes Ganbareh, which is a trance-styled piece which blends Japanese instruments (taishikotos, shamisens, etc.) and Japanese percussions with European Trance!

Next comes the track I Believe. This features once again TJ Davis, and is very awesome. Especially so when the kick and bass dissappear after the first verse and all the sounds are fading in.

Fourth comes The Sunset. This is a really nice track. Sorta relaxin in a way. The X-tended version from the Sash's single Ganbareh-Remix Edition is what should've gone here.

Fifth is The Secret featuring that foxy Broadway star, Sarah Brightman (best known for performances in the Phantom of the Opera). This one, if not prepared for it, will make you cry. I've never heard Sarah's vocals more beautiful than this, and the background instruments really make this track move.

Sixth comes my favourite track, Run, featuring everyone's favourite gay singer from Culture Club, Boy George. This is not trance, but rather more or less a form of house that has guitars, vocals, and a really awesome accoustic bassline that'll leave you awestruck.

Seventh comes the Rainforest. This is rather a slower but moving trance-like piece. From the sounds of the villagers chanting to the waterfalls to the African-styled instruments and drums (and a flute as well in one section), you'll be left amazed.

Eighth comes a straight-up dance remix of Nessun Dorma. It's not the most amazing track on this album, but out of 10 I rate it 8.

Ninth comes a really cool club-styled piece called Luna Llena. From the organ-styled bass to the Spanish-fly guitars on the left and right and the alluring voice of La Isla, you'll be up and dancing in no time.

Tenth comes the COOLEST SONG EVER!!!! If you've listened to Brooklyn Bounce's album Restart but wished that they had straight melodies without too much talking, here is Habibi! It starts of like a trance-type piece, and it keeps you going for about a minute. Then the guy shouts in Arabian something like "Hizu Diku Malian Difu He Ya HABIBI!!!!" It's basically Arabian for "Get your party on!!!" Then, Sash breaks off from that tempo and makes this piece Bounce! Then he tosses in this haunting melody. After this, he takes the melody and puts it with the trance pace from before. MASTERPIECE!!!!

Eleventh comes Peace of Mind. This is almost trance, but Kirsten's voice is what makes this track sparkle.

Twelve and Thirteen comes (either Stop Pushing or Baila Loca, I forget the order). Baila Loca is another Spanish piece, and it's a little trancier, but still has a club feel to it. The reversed congas beside the haunting melody and the vocoded voice make this piece really cool. It'll get you dancing in no time at all. Stop Pushing is a song with a statement. Marvin Broadie speaks for all who are sick of being told what to do!! Whether you're sick of your parents nagging on you, or you're sick that your lover keeps threatening to leave you if you don't do as he/she says, this song is for you. This song is a cross between Club/House/and the dance artist French Affair.

Fourteen is S4! Sash! This is the title track and it is straight-up a club-trance piece. This piece sounds really alien at first, but it's so cool.

Fifteen is the remake of another song, and it's called The Walk. This song is trance, and it's trance at it's best!!! There's no denying that.

Sixteen is straight club. Don't Be So Rude is 7 out of 10, but in my opinion was the best track to close off the album.

And that's my review. Please buy this album, as you won't be dissappointed!!!

NOTE: There was a dance version of Ouverture out there by Sash! called Gimme Tonite featuring some other singer than TJ Davis. Sash! unfortunately chose to redo the song differently.

5 out of 5 stars Sash! never disappoints.......2003-11-14

This album is incredible, following in the gigantic shoes of Trilenium and Life Goes On, and delivers the most gorgeous mix and variety of sweet, jamming techno.
Every Sash! fan must get this CD to make the collection complete. I had to order mine from Australia in order to not get ripped a new one on U.S. import fees, but absolutely worth the trouble of it. A massive, beautiful CD that is constantly in my player, to stay.
