Product Description
This Colorado-based trio has built a career on years of solid touring throughout every college town and a strong DIY ethic. CRIMES OF PASSION is Big Head Todd and the Monsters' eighth album. The irresistible combination of catchy, rough-and-tumble rock with powerful themes sees Todd Mohr at the helm, producing the album. The band is at home on the road and this year is no different, with tour dates at home and abroad throughout the year.

Two themes consistently run through CRIMES OF PASSION - a love of rock and roll and the need to tell compelling, human stories. The wide-ranging songwriting has always been seamless because the trio has an intuitive understanding of where the songs are going - they've been a band since their high school days through to their college days at the University of Colorado. The irresistible combination of catchy rough-and-tumble rock paired with dark storytelling made for the platinum-selling success of SISTER SWEETLY and the tradition continues with CRIMES OF PASSION.

5 out of 5 stars Pat Benatar's Best CD.......2006-10-29

CRIMES OF PASSION is Pat Benatar's best studio album. The main influences here are Steve Miller circa BOOK OF DREAMS, Ted Nugent's first three solo albums, and the harder side of Heart. At my old school, I knew a lot of kids from not-so-good homes, so I can appreciate the thought that went into the lyrics of "Hell Is For Children"; "Hit Me With Your Best Shot", on the other hand, is the perfect sports anthem, and covers of "Treat Me Right" and "You Better Run" could, in the wake of Indonesia's trumped-up 2005 drug-smuggling conviction of a young Australian tourist, be interpreted as a woman demanding that her beau change their honeymoon plans from Bali to Hawaii. Pat Benatar got this good immediately before and after this album, but she never got better.

5 out of 5 stars Sounds Great!.......2006-10-24

I just wanted to add that this is a fantastic remastering. The sound is powerful and crystal clear. There are obviously many hits here, but some of the non-singles are excellent tunes which stay lodged in the brain. "Wuthering Heights" is a beautiful, haunting cover of a Kate Bush song. It doesn't fit in with the other tracks, but it is terrific. On the other hand, "Prisoner of Love" is a great boogie tune which sounds like the band is playing in a biker bar somewhere.

5 out of 5 stars It's About Time! One Of The Best Remastering Jobs I've Heard!.......2006-06-28

This disc sounds absolutely stunning -- the result of the excellent remastering job by Mark Chalecki @ Capitol Mastering Studios, Hollywood. Nice work!

I was torn on purchasing this release, seeing that Capitol hadn't bothered to upgrade the artwork and package. I figured that the label probably wouldn't bother much with the audio either. I was wrong! We get the same old CD packaging from the original release with one exception -- that is, the brilliant audio upgrade! Considering that the music sources from 1980 it sounds nearly as crisp and clear as any recording today. I didn't think so much depth and range could be tweaked out of a 26 year old recording, but here it is! Pat Benatar finally gets a long overdue remastering of her classic 1980 album.

I wanted to knock this release down a star or two due to the lack of major packaging upgrades or inclusion of bonus tracks. However, after hearing the stunning remastering work done on my favorite track, "Wuthering Heights", I could not rate this release any lower than 5 stars. "Wuthering Heights" originally appeared in a "remastered" form on Pat's 1999 anthology, "Synchronistic Wanderings", but I was disappointed in the sound, thinking more could be tweaked from the recording. That version sounded rather flat and buried in the speakers, but this one is loud and clean with it's soaring, crashing guitars. Album highlights such as "Hell Is For Children" and "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" have never rocked harder!

As much as I was looking forward to Pat Benatar remasters in a possible 5.1 audio release these CDs have never sounded better. Now bring on the remaining catalogue remasters!

I AM SO GLAD THAT THE {PAT BENATAR} CD [CRIMES OF PASSION] IS BACK FOR SALE AGAIN.JUST A FEW WEEKS AGO THIS CD WAS ONLY SOLD AS A IMPORT;OR YOU COULD BUY IT USED.
SO WHEN I SAW IT FOR SALE NEW & REMASTERED I BOUGHT IT AS FAST AS I COULD.
THESE SONG'S ARE PLAYED ON THE CLASSIC ROCK STATIONS ON A NON~STOP BASIS.
I DON'T THINK THERE IS A PERSON IN THE WORLD WHO DOES NOT KNOW THE SONG "HIT ME WITH YOUR BEST SHOT" AN ALL TIME CLASSIC!.
THE POWERFUL SONG "HELL IS FOR CHILDREN" WAS FIRST THOUGHT AS A NEGATIVE SONG AND SHE GOT SOME HEAT OVER IT.UNTIL SHE EXPLAIN THAT THE SONG WAS ABOUT CHILD ABUSE IN AMERICA;AND THE SONG WAS MEANT TO HELP NOT HURT.
MORE GREAT CLASSIC SONG'S LIKE "TREAT ME RIGHT" AND
"YOU BETTER RUN" WILL BE PLAYED UNTIL THE SUN BURNS OUT.
I DISCOVERED THE SONG "I'M GONNA FOLLOW YOU" ON HER VIDEO COLLECTION DVD.IT IS A GREAT SONG THAT HAS A VIDEO BUT WAS NEVER RELEASED AS A SINGLE.
SO PICK UP THIS CD AND ENJOY IT,PLAY IT,AND BLAST IT!.
{A FAN OF GREAT MUSIC OF THE 80'S,90'S AND TODAY}

5 out of 5 stars 26 years and still a rock classic.......2006-04-13

For those who write Ms. Benatar off as a one trick pony, pick up this classic from 1980 and see what you'll say NOW.
Every song on here is magical.

Treat Me Right kicks off the mood for this album and you know from the first line "You want me to leave, you want me to stay", that you're in for a killer album.

You Better Run remakes an old 60's song and gives it headbanging treatment.

Never Wanna Leave You is more in the vein of her Get Nervous sound, and it's great too. You see a more playful Pat on this track that usually lurks behind on the rest.

Hit Me With Your Best Shot -- who hasn't heard this song? It's 2:51 of pure perfection. The song launched Pat into the superstar stratospeare and has a very nice double entendre.

Hell Is For Children is one of the most haunting songs ever recorded. And it is possibly the greatest record Pat recorded.

Little Paradise is filler, but it's got a very intresting beat.

Prisoner Of Love is one of the most melodic tracks on this album. Try to get this song out of your head.

Wuthering Heights is a remake of a classic Kate Bush record. Pat's lounge roots show through on this, she sings like you've never heard her before.

I'm Gonna Follow You is the most underrated song of her career. She even did a video for this song. Another one of her highlights.

Out-A-Touch ends the album with a bang. She proves she's still a "tough cookie"

DO NOT MISS THIS ALBUM! It's 26 years old and it still rocks.

5 out of 5 stars A good classic hard rock album!.......2007-03-15

For me, Par Benatar is the original 'heavy metal'/hard-rock chick. 'Crimes of Passion' is one of several rock albums I grew up on that helped influence my taste in music. As well as being a landmark album for women in hard rock music, it's simply just one damn good hard-rock album period!. Quality tracks and a crystal clear sound. There is not one dud track. Standouts include Treat Me right, You Better Run, I'm Gonna Follow You (check out the background vocals!), the powerful and eerie Hell Is For Children, the majestic sounding Wuthering Heights, and well, just about all the rest of 'em!. I would really go on to say that the 'trilogy' of her first three albums ('In The Heat Of The Night', 'Crimes...', and 'Precious Time' are really worth owning. (admittedly, I completely lost interest by the time of 'Get Nervous'). If you like Pat Benatar, or just plain good hard rock music, pick up this one, you won't be disappointed

5 out of 5 stars A Rock Album Classic - An 80's Rock Staple.......2006-01-24

Every so often an album comes out that is just "smoking hot." That would be true here with Benatar's Crimes of Passion. I remember going through album stacks at people's houses and there were always a few that were in everyone's stack. Crimes was one of those albums. Great songs, great production, and that one and only voice. I love Pat Benatar!!

5 out of 5 stars Without A Doubt, Pat Benatar's Finest Album.......2005-08-13

After "In The Heat Of The Night" became a hit album in 1979 and "Heartbreaker" and "We Live For Love" became Top 40 singles, nobody was surprised when her second album, "Crimes Of Passion", became an even bigger hit, yielding three massive hit singles, a phenomenally popular album track and platinum certification. Pat was in top form here, and it still shows.

"Crimes Of Passion" kicks off with the # 18 hit "Treat Me Right". A sort of new wave meets punk rock type number, it sounds a lot like Blondie's "Call Me" except with a lot more punch to it. Neil's guitar playing on this is among his best, and Pat sounds great onhere. With all the airplay this song got, I'm surprised it was left off the 1989 hits collection "Best Shots". The next song is her update of The Rascals hit "You Better Run" (# 42 on Billboard). This update is fiercer and harder rocking, the guitar crunch adds to the song tremedously. A great song, and historians may want to take note that this song's video was the second to ever air on MTV. Next is "Never Wanna Leave You". A great unknown gem in the Benatar cannon, highlighted by her sweet, sincere vocal performance. Next comes her first Top Ten single and her signature song. "Hit Me With Your Best Shot", with its unforgettable riff, powerful Pat vocal and awesome solo, this is the definitive Benatar song, even though she isn't particularly fond of it. Next comes the chilling "Hell Is For Children". A powerful child abuse anthem, this song is quite possibly Pat's best song ever, the way the words fit the music is...wow.

"Little Paradise" is highlighted by awesome guitar playing from Neil. He is absolutely awesome on this one. He sort of carries the song the way an actor carries a moive, as the song is otherwise underwhelming. "I'm Gonna Follow You" is mysterious song with a smoky Pat vocal and a cool, creepy arrangement. The video for this song was cool, too. Next is a cover of Kate Bush's "Wuthering Heights". This has one of Pat's best vocals ever. This is an amazing song unlike anything she's ever done. A small masterpiece. "Priosner Of Love" is a solid rocker while "Out Of Touch" makes for a nice, if unspectacular, closer.

This is one of the best albums of the 1980s', and one I would recomend to almost anyone. Pick it up as soon as you can.

5 out of 5 stars Still rocks after all these years!!.......2005-07-26

I've worn this one out on 8 track, cassette, and LP. Pat still rocks! The only question is, when will the macho buggers in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame give her the recognition she deserves?

5 out of 5 stars A favorite for over twenty years.......2005-07-22

I have loved Pat Benatar ever since I discovered her in 1980. Growing up in the 80's I always had Pat with me when I needed her. Her voice should be one of legend and one could argue she is the world's greatest female singer. I think only Ann Wilson of Heart can even come close to her.

You have a lot of early hits from Pat on here including Hit me With your Best Shot. She does not perform this song live anymore, she never liked it from the beginning and she sang it so much back then that she doesn't even like to listen to it. Hell is for Children, her anti-child abuse song is also here. Treat me Right got a lot of radio airplay as well.

But my favorite song from Pat is on this album and that is Wuthering Heights. I once read that she never liked the way that song turned out and wanted to redo it. I don't see how she or anyone else could possibly do better than what ended up on the album. Her voice is like an angel and some of those notes would be impossible for most singers. It is a beautiful song about the novel of the same name. It is truly one of the jewels in Pat's long and great career.

If you are interested in Pat Benatar and not too familiar with her music, I would suggest this along with Get Nervous.

3 out of 5 stars It will grow on you.......2007-04-14

I really didn't care for this album at first. It sat on my shelf for about two years until I thought I would give it another try. There are about 4 or 5 really great songs on here. Angela Dangerlove, ICU in everything, Beauty Queen, Love transmission, are my favorites. The rest of the album is pretty good.

5 out of 5 stars Getting better and better.......2006-10-24

I have been a Big Head Todd fan for over 10 years. I recently watched their DVD "Live at the Fillmore." It was the first time I heard their new music from "Crimes of Passion." Musically and lyrically, this CD is hands down my favorite. The great thing about this band is that they remain true to their blues roots like in "Angela Dangerlove" and provide some incredible rock for the rock lover in me like in "Come On." Big Head Todd and the Monsters continue to mature musically and I wait anxiously for their new project.

5 out of 5 stars Soulful - A new directions with links to the past.......2005-12-20

Crimes of Passion is awesome. I've been a BHTM fan since the early days in Boulder. The band has evolved to be sure, but Crimes of Passion is great effort. Honestly, it took me a listen or two before I really got into it, but there a few tracks on Crimes of Passion, especially Beauty Queen, that really have me hooked. I agree with the comments that this band is way underappreciated - if you haven't seen Todd play live you're missing a chance to see one of the greatest guitar players ever. Though, I have to admit I do like the fact that I can see them this Feb in a nice cozy place that only holds 500 or so!

2 out of 5 stars New is not always better.......2005-11-13

I was inspired to write this review after reading "Life Long BHT Fan's" review below. I had just received and email about and upcoming BHTM show at the Crystal Ballroom in Portland, Oregon and I went to the BHT website to look into tickets. It has been sometime since I have listened to an album, but I hold my past love for their work as one of my all time favorites bands over the past decade. The problem is that they lost me on Riviera. I have seen them a couple of times and as the review I cited above states, it is was the same show twice in different years.

Now, I listed to the song samples from CoP from the band's website, "Dirty Juice" and "Imaginary Ships," as well as the snip-its from amazon, and there is no way I would touch this album. I am even sad to think I won't go to the upcoming concert. I know there are only some many songs a band can produce in the same format, but when another good format does not present itself, please don't put out substandard music. From the little I heard of this album, it is just a disgrace to what the band has done. Who wants to remember them like this.

I know this won't be helpful to many, but when the sample songs available on the band's website aren't any good--isn't that where you are supposed to put your best foot forward. I just do think there is a best to put forward with this album and I am not going to spend the money just to find out I am right.

5 out of 5 stars Great Disc.......2005-02-10

This disc is edgey & soulful. Really captures what the band is all about.

1 out of 5 stars Great music, dreadful remastering on this release.......2007-04-17

In the Heat of the Night is Benatar's best record, IMHO.
But do NOT purchase this CD.
The "remastering" job done on this release borders on the criminal, in that it doesn't sound appreciably better than the first CD releases.
I understand they released another remastered version of these records in 2006. If you're buying these records for the first time, buy the later remasters.
As for me, luckily I had the original vinyl versions, which sound 5x better than this mud when I digitized them myself with an $8 adapter from Radio Shack. Still, I wish I had legal recourse for wasting $20 on this CD.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!!!.......2005-08-06

If you're looking at this CD.....you are already very familiar with Pats legacy and impact on female rock....so no need to review each track.

What you are getting is her 3rd and 4th albums....gloriously remastered like you never heard her before....the sound is strong and clean....the highs just sparkle...alot of effort went into the remastering of these tracks....the liner notes are fantastic...all the lyrics included.

You wont be disappointed..guaranteed!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Pat Benatar ruled! Other girls (singers) drooled!.......2005-04-23

This is really a great combination CD. Two of the very best Heavy Rock albums of the 80's in one place. I bought these albums separately before, but this one is a real cost-effective way to get truly Pat Benatar's best albums.
Listening to the songs on these albums. I was impressed again with Benatar's powerful voice. She punches right through on each song, and she can be just as effective on the Heavy stuff like "Heartbreaker" and "Hit Me With Your Best Shot", as she can be on the more softer stuff like "In The Heat Of The Night" and "Wuthering Heights" (a real under-rated performance, much better than the Kate Bush version - and SHE WROTE IT!).
Throughout both albums, though, it is clear that Pat's secret weapon is guitarist Neil Geraldo. Man, this cat rocked! I really liked his solos on "Heartbreaker" and "Out Of Touch". I'm glad he had the self-awareness and respect for Pat Benatar to unselfishly contribute to each song without going on the ego-trip of - say - a G.E. Smith (Hall And Oates) or that guy from Van Halen! A real rocker, and so cool!
I had only one comment about this CD, though. With both albums packed so tightly on one CD, my player had difficulty loading individual songs, but it worked out after a few tries.
These may be Pat Benatar's best albums, but check out "Precious Time" and "Get Nervous". They continue her winning combinations.

5 out of 5 stars two of her best albums on one CD, with full length versions.......2005-04-16

I'm so glad that this CD did not make the error the Tropico/Seven the Hard Way CD made, which is to edit about 3 of the songs from those albums to squeeze the radio edit of Love is A Battlefield onto the CD. This CD instead offers all the full length album versions of her first two albums, which are probably her best because they lean more towards a melodic new wave, almost Blondie-esque sound. My only disappointment is that I was hoping that In the Heat of the Night would--by a fluke--have the impossible to get on CD mix of We Live For Love that was available on some of the initial pressings of the original album. It was a much more new wave sounding version that removed much of the guitar and had a more pulsing bassline. I've sampled every Pat Benatar CD I come across to see if any compilations features that version, and have yet to find one. I would love to have both versions of the song on CD so I could get rid of my old vinyl album. But, having said that, this is still a 5 star CD.

5 out of 5 stars Come on now, how great was Pat Benatar!.......2005-03-13

At the height of my testosterone-storm adolescence came the perfect rock star for my state of being: Pat Benatar.
Just looking at her first album cover, I saw this sexy/pretty pouting tough-waif, and in the grooves of the record I found an operatic rock voice (dropping into a sexy growl from time to time) fronting a crack band playing contemporary new-wave power-pop rock and roll with gusto.
Everyone knows the single "Heartbreaker", but there are several other songs on the first album that are it's equal. Benatar has relied on covers throughout her early career, and here there are many, including Mellencamp's early song, "I Need A Lover".
The synthesizer rock element comes to the fore with the goofy "My Clone Sleeps Alone", and there's a sexy coquettish-ness to "Rated X".
"So Sincere", an exhilarating rocker, ends the first album proper with style.
This stupendous remaster includes BOTH albums on one CD, sweetly remastered.
"Crimes of Passion", for many their introduction to Ms. Benatar, is one of the iconic albums of the era.
The single "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" was all over the radio, as MTV was only just getting started. Other singles likes "You Better Run" followed, and she went "topical" with "Hell is For Children" ( a better-than-you'd-expect tale of child abuse). To her credit, it worked.
She gets slinky with the sinuous bass and drum lines of "Never Wanna Leave You", and overly dramatic with "Wuthering Heights". She goes for old-fashioned bar-band rock and roll with "Prisoner of Love" and again ends her album with a lacerating pop-rocker, "Out-A-Touch".
This two-fer remaster is clearly one of the best deals available, and brought me back to my junior high/high school days with a vividness and clarity that was jarring. And terrific at the same time...I was both proud and embarrassed that I remembered every lyric, every musical cue or riff...I knew instinctively which song was coming next.
But I bet you I haven't heard this album in over twenty years...it just goes to show you.
Exactly WHAT it shows, I'm not sure...but it HAS to be something! There are brain synapses that formed a quarter of a century ago, that are still there, just waiting for that first chord of "Heartbreaker" to set them afire...

      5 out of 5 stars Amazing Artists.......2007-06-10

I too cannot believe that Darling Cruel never made it bigger. The music is just unreal...rich, complex, alluring...
This is one of my top five albums of ALL time...and I listen to A LOT of music.
      Wish they had done more!

5 out of 5 stars One of my fave albums.......2005-05-10

I had the cassette of Passion Crimes ever since it first came out. Sadly the cassette has died and I'm now moving on up to CD format. I saw the video one time for "Everything's Over" on Mtv and was instantly hooked. Why oh why did we never hear from them again!!

      5 out of 5 stars Love it........2003-05-30

This is the best unknown record ever. I can't believe Darling Cruel never struck it big.

3 out of 5 stars Nasty piece of work!.......2001-05-01

Rick Wakeman seems like he might be an ideal composer for movie scores. Why then, I wonder, are so many of the films he has done music for either extremely obscure, off the beaten path, or just plain weird? CRIMES OF PASSION (1984) certainly fits the film-- a sordid, nasty tale in which a disturbed woman works out her demons by posing as a high-class call girl-- and winds up meeting both a man whose marriage is on the rocks, AND an even more disturbed character posing as a street preacher! As with most of his films (including LISZTOMANIA) Ken Russell tends to go too far over the edge of bad taste and lunacy. In this case, the end result is a truly heart-rending story of lust, depravity, love & redemption-- but to get there you have to wade through some really disturbing stuff (especially if you see the "unrated" version!).

Wakeman's score ranges from the sadly beautiful (including "Web Of Love" which features an excerpt of Dvorak's "Going Home") to the in-your-face nasty ("It's A Lovely Life", an ironic main title for such a UGLY song, with vocals by Maggie Bell). As on THE BURNING, there are spots where Rick seems to be on auto-- I'd swear he's simply lifting certain passages from earlier, and better, of his own albums. Both the film and the soundtrack are hard on your nerves-- but on its own, the film works, while I rank this album near the bottom of Rick's output.
