I judge all my other slack key cds against this one..........2000-06-02
The mellow performances match my personality, and bring to mind images of balmy breezes and swaying trees.
I've been looking for another instrumental cd of solo slack key performances, but have yet to find one that matches this one...except maybe Ozzie Kotani's, and Ledward Kaapana's live CD.
If you are wanting to play slack key, listen to this one and hear what can be achieved, without being distracted by other instruments.

The Ugly Truth.......2007-01-08
They would play my two favorite songs that summer , "Cherub Rock (smashing pumpkins)", and "Time Capsule (matthew sweet)".
I worked a crapy part-time job making 4.25 an hour. I only worked 8 hours a week. A soon as got my first paycheck, which was only 27 dollars, I walked to the mall and bought "Altered Beast", and "Simease Dream" on cassette. That took all my money because cassettes in 1993 were 11.99. I played it until I wore it out. When I finally got my Cd player for christmas that year, those were the first two Cds I bought.
This Cd is still great 13 years later.
1. Dinosaur Act - great opening track, it shows that Matthew can rock pretty good.
2. Devil With Green Eyes - It's one of my favorite songs on the Cd. It's one his more mellow songs.
3. The Ugly Truth - this the mellow version of this single
4. Time Capsule - One my favorite songs on this CD. It's was his second single on this record. Do you remember the video ? It's just him laying in a grass field with bugs and worms crawling on him.
5. Someone to Pull the Trigger - Hands down the best song on this CD. It's mellow and rocking at the same time.
6. Knowing People - It's kind of an anthem that he doesn't want to become famous. He really never did. A great song.
7. Life without You - your basic slow Matthew Sweet love song. It's an alright song.
8. Intro - It's excerpts from the movie "Caligula". "He's a God Now"
9. Ugly Truth Rock - The single version. This was the first single from this record. The video is Matthew driving a dodge dart, running from the police. There is a dead body in the trunk.
10. Do it Again - a pretty good song. A slow love song.
11. In Too Deap - One the better tracks off this album. Pretty good guitar and vocals in this song.
12. Reaching Out - A pretty good song.
13. Falling - A pretty good song. A slower song.
14. What do you Know ? - A decent track. Show how melodic Matthew is.
15. Everygreen - This is a very dood track to end the record with. It's pretty mellow. He like to end his records on mellow songs.
I higly reconmend picking up this Cd.

The most distinctive and unique band of New Wave.......2006-08-28
I first heard/saw Altered Images on MTV back in 1982. Being 12 years old at the time, I was entranced with the whole New Wave movement, yet Altered Images were nothing more than a joke to me back then. I blame it on self consciousness, as I figured everyone would point and laugh at me for liking the crazy lady jumping around like a loon in the colorfully zany video for "I Could Be Happy" - an often played video back in those days.
In 1987, I began going on a quest to rediscover all of those MTV regulars that I did not allow myself to purchase back in the day - artists such as Lene Lovich, Pete Shelley, and of course Altered Images. That's when my nostalgia trip started, and I've never stopped.
Altered Images are best remembered for their upbeat, colorful music and image - and while some recall that fondly, others were afraid to embrace the carefree craziness of lead singer Clare Grogan. Her personality permeated though the music, videos and band interviews of the time. It was a perfect escape from daily normalcy. What many people didn't know was the band came from a Post-Punk background, having released a couple of singles and a full-length album of stark music that was light on production; although, in three short years the band would jump from style to style, trying to find something that satisfied everyone.
Altered Images were originally haled with credibility, primarily due to their early association with Siouxsie and the Banshees. Steven Severin of the Banshees produced their early singles and most of the debut album, 'Happy Birthday', with mixed results. The music was minimal on Clare's distinctive character, though was successful in its own way.
After the release of the hit single "Happy Birthday", which was produced by Martin Rushent, the band had found their sound. Rushent produced the classic album 'Pinky Blue', showcasing the band in the best possible way. Clare was allowed to shine with her naturally charming insanity, and the band played equally engaging music to suit it. It seemed to be the perfect match. The problem was the critics bashed the band for selling out, which devastated Clare. They were relentless, and I even recall Clare in an interview stating she cried for hours after the list of negative reviews for 'Pinky Blue' kept growing and growing. How sad that a young girl of barely 20 could not be given credit for being a colorful and individual character.
Unfortunately, the wound ran deep and the band did a dramatic shift in sound for their third and final album, 'Bite'. Of the eight original songs on that album, the production credits were split between two big name producers, Mike Chapman and Tony Visconti. It was clear the band felt the need to grow up, and I can only assume that's what led to the departure of two original members. Gone were the bouncy songs about virtually nothing, being replaced by adult situations of love and loss. Gone were Clare's crazy bows and ribbons, replaced with fashionable clothes and loads of make up. Even the videos and TV performances were fairly middle-of-the-road, though thankfully the crazy Clare we know and love would still come though on the interviews.
'Bite' received a mixed reaction, though apparently not as bad as 'Pinky Blue'. While some of the critics approved of the new image, some of the fan base was lost due to the dramatic style change. I admit to being slow to warm to it, but have managed to find a number of great songs on 'Bite'.
With each single released from 'Bite', their chart placing was lower and lower - to the point the final single, "Change of Heart", sadly not included here, did not chart at all. Altered Images split soon after.
'I Could Be Happy - The Best of Altered Images' brings together a good cross section of material from all three albums, as well as their excellent debut single "Dead Pop Stars". It's a great introduction to the band, and will hopefully encourage some to purchase the full albums.
While the New Wave movement spawned loads of talented, though many short lived artists with extreme individuality, none are quite as distinctive as Altered Images. There was never a band that sounded like them, and never will again. It was an amazing moment in time that has left an eternal mark.
The sound quality on the CD is excellent. All songs have been taken from the original master tapes, and couldn't sound better. The only thing that irritates is after the final song on the CD, there is a lengthy bit of silence... then comes "Happy New Year". This was a little holiday greeting Clare offered to readers of the Flexipop magazine. Each issue of Flexipop came with a junky little flexidisc, many times with rare songs or versions not available elsewhere. While it's a cute little novelty, the click, pops and rumble of the flexidisc are not a pleasant way to end the listening experience.
The most recent of the Altered Images compilation CD's is titled 'Destiny - The Hits'. In addition to a so-so selection of songs, there are two brand new songs. If you want to hear how Clare sounds in recent times, you may want to purchase that CD. I will say that Clare sounds EXACTLY the same, which makes it that much more heartbreaking that the band did not continue. There could have been so many other great albums over the years.
New Wave pop at its finest........2005-09-19
It's not complicated- Altered Images were a band that simply made really good, enjoyable music. It's happy, it's fun. And that's the brilliance of it. It simply is what it is, and what it is happens to be some of the best pop of the 80's.
A good collection of an early 80's new wave group.......2004-07-13
Effective collection of UK 80's New Wave group.......2004-01-21
Their best known song, "Happy Birthday", was the title track of their debut album, and characterizes the infectious cheer of their song, with Grogan's cute-girl voice, a cross between Jane Wiedlin and a less squeaky Dale Bozzio, the bouncy guitar and drums. This peaked at #2 in the UK.
"Real Toys" and "Love And Kisses" has shades of a poppier Banshees sound, not surprising as they were produced by Severin. Their debut single, "Dead Pop Stars", was an unsuccessful indie single produced by Severin, and has a harder edged guitar and a more punk sound with some eerie undertones and some wry commentary: "dead pop stars rotting in the studio/pretty bodies make little girls scream" and "I am the poster on your wall." A standout. It's B-side, "Sentimental" sounds like a Missing Persons song with light punk guitars.
"I Could Be Happy" signalled a more happier power pop that characterized their Pinky Blue album, which received quite a drubbing among UK critics. "See Those Eyes" was another one of their big hits, with Clare and company sounding more like Missing Persons than a pop-like Banshees. "Funny Funny Me"
Their happy power pop style was being eclipsed by the time R.E.M. became the new thing with Chronic Town. "Bring Me Closer" from their last album Bite incorporated 70's disco synths, and saw them bringing in producers Tony Visconti and Mike Chapman, which may be the reason why "Love To Stay" sounded like a Blondie song reject. Another catchy 70's disco-type song, with Bananarama-type harmony backing vocalists, is their last UK Top Ten hit, "Don't Talk To Me About Love." The sax ballad "Thinking About You" really shows their transition to a more conventional sound.
Fans of Red Dwarf will be familiar with lead singer Clare Grogan, who as C.P. Grogan starred in the British sci-fi sitcom as Kristine Kochanski. And guitarist Johnny McElhone later joined the groups Hipsway and Texas.
Maybe because Altered Images didn't make that big a splash in the US they aren't that well remembered here. Nevertheless, it has to be said that they did create a brief blip in the punk/New Wave era.

Excellent for starters AND veterans alike. I've played this CD getting ready for parties AND falling asleep afterwards; it's very versatile with seamless mixes and long drawn-out suspenses.... just what trance is SUPPOSED to be, right? It's a well-spent $12 bucks and the songs are never "aged," meaning they continue to be desired month after month, year after year. The songs are NOT commercialized with #4 being especially satisfying and songs #9-14 having an amazing build-up with intense energy. Happy purchase:)

A key to the longevity of The Yellowjackets can be seen in the writing credits on their latest release. Truly a collective enterprise, all four members write in styles which play to the strengths of their compatriots. Bassist Jimmy Haslip's "Youth Eternal" chugs along over his funky foundation, but Bob Mintzer's tenor lines complete the picture. Mintzer's own "March Majestic" is built on Russell Ferrante's gospel-tinged chording and drummer Marcus Baylor's tight snare rolls. Warmly produced, the subtleties are captured with vivid presence. The disc flows with a cohesiveness, but is built around drama and contrast as well. Guest vocalist Jean Baylor appears on "The Hope," backed by four additional singers, and this one vocal number fits in perfectly. Not forced into the set, it finds the quartet supporting a foreground lyric with grace and invention. --David GreenbergerCustomer Reviews:
Yellow Jackets Never Disappoint!.......2007-03-26
The Yellow Jackets are ALWAYS AWESOME.
The best yet, from the best ever.......2006-02-04
Maybe it's because I'm a keyboard player, or maybe it's just that he's that good, but whatever the reason, Russell Ferrante touches my soul deeply. He, and Lyle Mays and Keith Jarret, are in my opinion, the greatest keyboard players on the planet. Sometimes I suspect Russell is not *from* this planet. Maybe he's from the place called Heaven. All I know is he takes me there.
Now This Is More Like It!.......2005-08-11
Following the departure of Will Kennedy, (the most phenomenally dynamic drummer I've ever personally heard or seen and in my view, the best this band ever had), I was beginning to despair. I respect all the musicians in this band, I think they are all awesomely talented, new drummer Marcus Baylor included but the latter is no match for Will. Not to these ears anyway. As skilful as they all are though, the band lost a crucial ingredient of the sound I'd come to love with Will's departure.
The year he left, the group toured with Peter Erskine and there was talk that he might join the band full time. I wasn't that familiar with Pete's work at that time but after hearing (and more importantly, seeing) him at the Jazz Cafe in London, I was like, wow. He more than matched Will Kennedy for what most of us fans had come to love him for - his polyrythmic dexterity behind the drumset. That was one concert I will never forget.
The first Yellowjacket album I heard after Will had left, the live "Mint Jam" was okay mostly because the mixing didn't really expose the limitations of the drumming. The new tunes were great and the familiar ones were good to hear on a live CD.
"Time Squared" did reveal exactly how different Baylor was though and I was very disappointed. As much as I love these guys, that would've been my last buy but my best mate told me about this one so I decided to check it out. As soon as I heard the first track, I was like, yeah, this is more like it!
There's not much I can say about the other guys. Like I've said, to me they will always be the best in their game. But Baylor's drumming has definitely been turned up a notch. He'll never match Kennedy as far as I'm concerned but no doubt he wants to have his own identity anyway and not be seen as a Kennedy clone. This I would say he's achieving. I can still tell that it's him on drums but at the same time, some of the old Yellowjackets sparkle is definitely back.
I'm not really a fan of vocals on jazz albums either unless we're talking someone really significant. They had Bobby McFerrin on a few albums back for instance and he was just brilliant. But Jean Baylor (with the Perry sisters on backing vocals) really shines on "The Hope" and I also like the positive message in the lyrics. Russell Ferrante tries something I'm not sure I've heard from him before on "Hunter's Point" and it works. And every time I hear "Youth Eternal", I'm literally filled with a feeling of eternal youth and I just have to get up and dance.
All in all, a great return to form for Yellowjackets. I'm now very likely to remain a devoted fan well into the foreseeable future. No one could be happier than I am about that.

Long overdue on CD, but this reissue is a disaster!.......2006-08-28
First off we have track 2, "Another lost look". This song has never been on CD, but the version they put in place of the superior LP version is the 'Live' version, which originally appeared on the B side the of "Love to stay" single.
Next, we have "Love to stay", which is not the full length LP version, but the much edited single version.
"Don't talk to me about love" is also not the original full length LP version, but the edited single version.
"Change of heart" is the same version that has appeared on every CD since the originally released 'Best Of' CD in 1992. It's the single version that, aside from missing the first note of the song, has a couple musical parts edited out.
"I don't want to know" is a great song that was only issued on the UK cassette version of this album. Unfortunately, it sounds as if it was mastered from an old cassette tape.
Same thing goes for "Last goodbye". This song sounds muffled and flat.
Regarding the "Don't talk to me about love" 12" mix; this version is originally 8 and 1/2 minutes long, but was edited down to 7 minutes, due to time constraints, for the 1996 collection 'Reflected images'. Rather than getting the full version, we get a repeat of that edited version.
And last, there was no "Love to stay" dance mix. The 12" version of the song is just the full length LP mix, which should be track 3 on this CD.
What's very clear about this release is that the only songs to have actually been "remastered" were the ones that hadn't appeared on CD before. The others were all taken directly from previously mastered compilation CD's, which is obvious because all of the old mastering flaws are included here. Rather than giving us an up-to-date remastered disc, it's nothing more than a collection of songs from previous releases. Did anyone even proof this thing before production? I can understand that at times these indie labels are at the mercy of what the rights holder supplies them with, but some of these mistakes are inexcusable.
Luckily, 'Bite' was also released on CD in Japan soon after this release, though only containing the eight original album tracks. On the plus side, the Japanese CD was a completely new remaster, offering full versions of all songs in great quality. The only difference is "Don't talk to me about love" is still the single version, though that's the way it was on the original Japanese LP, so it's not really a mistake.
After 'Pinky blue' received nasty reviews, the band lost two members and decided to change their sound and image substantially. The first single, "Don't talk to me about love", is a pleasant dance song which often leads to comparison to Blondie, which I believe is based mainly on the production credits, i.e. Mike Chapman.
The next single, "Bring me closer", is a song I couldn't stand for over a decade... then one day it clicked with me. Originally, the whole disco sound seemed a step backwards, but I enjoy the song now, especially the 12" mix.
The third single, "Love to stay", is one of my all time favorite Altered Images tracks. It's very tropical and dreamy, and Clare sounds amazing. There is also a promo video for this song that I have been looking to add to my collection for over 17 years. I've never even seen it, and it's something of a holy grail at this point.
The final single was "Change of heart", which failed to chart at all. That may have been because both the 7" and 12" featured no exclusive songs, or maybe the public just didn't care anymore. It's the closest thing to a 'Pinky Blue' sounding song on this album, and I love it.
There are some songs that are just downright awful. "Stand so quiet" and "Now that you're here" are just so dreadful, I can't even listen to them without cringing. Clare's voice is NOT suited for the attempted maturity of the music and lyrics, and they come off as pompous and overproduced.
The B sides are the best material from this era. "Last goodbye" and "Surprise me" are fun toe tappers that harken back to the excitement and fun of 'Pinky Blue', which is probably why they were left as B sides.
'Bite' is very schizophrenic in sound, which could be another comparison to Blondie since their 'Autoamerican' album was all over the place, but with some of their best songs. 'Bite' is an interesting closure to what should have been a long and wonderful career for Clare and the boys. The critics were too hard on this band for being fun and colorful the previous year, so this album seems to be an attempt to please the critics and retain/regain some credibility. Though it's not their best album, it still shows that Altered Images were an amazingly talented and unique band, regardless of their young age at the time.
Clare Grogan recorded a full length solo album titled 'Trash Mad' for the London Records label in 1987. After the first single, "Love Bomb", failed to chart, plans for the second single, titled "Strawberry", were shelved - as well as the completed album. There was a video produced for Love Bomb, and unfortunately it looked like a Bananarama wannabe video, complete with spandex and dancing boys.
A second song from Clare's solo venture was available on a London Records compilation album titled 'Giant'. It contains a really terrible song called "Reason is the slave". While it's clear that Clare's solo work wasn't going to be on par with Altered Images material, it's still a shame the solo album was never released. It is rumored that promo copies were sent out at the time, though I've never seen any proof of that.
Pop confections galore.......2005-11-01
With "Bite," the band underwent a makeover in image, sound and lineup, and fortunately, the new formula worked just as well.
This is polished, melody-driven 80's pop, much sleeker and more restrained than what the band had previously produced. Clare Grogan's vocals are not quite as giddy and chirpy, and the production, much of which was done by Mike Chapman, makes the songs shine.
The lead single, "Don't Talk to Me About Love," is simply one of the most beautifully arranged and performed pop songs ever. "Bring Me Closer" is a fun disco-dance number. "Another Lost Look" and "Love to Stay" are sweet, dreamy pop gems, while "Change of Heart" channels Blondie when Blondie was channeling 60's girl group. Actually, the entire album channels Blondie, which is definitely not a bad thing.
There were originally only eight tracks on "Bite," so the bonus material included on this CD is more than welcome. "Surprise Me" is manic bubblegum reminiscent of the material on "Pinky Blue." "Last Goodbye" is more fun pop that's so good you have to wonder why it wasn't originally included. "I Don't Want to Know" is yet another winner that sounds like what might have happened if the Shangri-Las were still making music in 1984.
If you love good, fun pop or new wave music, don't hesitate to pick up this CD. And while you're at it, pick up "Happy Birthday" and "Pinky Blue," and prepare to have some fun.
Once Bitten.......2005-04-09
The cd sounds as fresh today as it did when it was released. The rich layered production pervades each enchanting song, from the cha cha beat of Love to Stay to the haunting Now That You're Here. Don't Talk To Me About Love, the album's first single, reaches a pinnacle of true artistic expression, as heart wrenching as it is lovely. Claire Grogan's voice never sounded so luxuriously polished as it does on this collection of songs.
Sadly, this, the band's last musical effort, left fans wanting more. These years later, we finally get more with the bonus extend tracks and unreleased material. Don't miss this opportunity to hear one of the most underappreciated bands of the 1980's, if not of all time.
the crown jewel of the Altered Images legacy.......2004-07-11
Its lead single, "Don't Talk To Me About Love" is simply one of the best pop 45s ever released. It's good to have its 12" on CD here as well - both A and B side. The dance mixes for singles "Love To Stay" and "Bring Me Closer" are also welcome bonus tracks. The addition of the b-side "Surprise Me" lends a slight flavor of the "Pinky Blue" album to the proceedings, and that's a happy bonus too.
The enclosed booklet includes original album artwork and gives a nice history of Altered Images circa "Bite". The only thing that might have made this reissue "perfect-er" would have been the inclusion of the band's cover of "Little Town Flirt". If only we had Clare Grogan and Altered Images now!
