PLAYERS DOIN' THEIR THING ON THIS COLLECTION! .......2007-02-14

The Players may've been around since the 50's as a doo wop group, but these songs are where the group makes their "real debut" in r&b. Orgasm shows that the Ohio Players were an innovative funk band in their own right. At their best, they were clearly up to par with Funkadelic, Kool and the Gang, and the JB's.

If you listen to their songs on the surface, they don't seem all that unique. But their songs often had a sleazy edge that separated them from their comtemporaries (which is obvious from their playboy-ish album covers). Tracks like "Climax" drips with sexuality and "Laid It" can be a theme song for a Players Ball convention.

Overall these songs may not sound as fully realized as their Mercury records recordings, the seeds they were planting for commercial success makes this cd an essential purchase. If you already own the "Funk on Fire anthology", you need this to make your Ohio Players collection complete.

If you're havin' any doubts about purchasing this batch of funk, follow the advice that funky Granny gives in "Funky Worm"....... DON'T FIGHT THE FEELIN!

good cd for the funklovers only, not as popular as skin tight, and fire but all op fans should have this plus funky worm was sampled to death, this features junie morrison way fo he went funkadelic, the tracks for those who cannot understand is a group in their prime trying lots of experimenting, and creativity along with it, unsung heroes of rock, and fusion,while the players played every style of music known to man in one song at that, and the songs are quality. this was one of few groups who could give funkadelic, a run for their money.

Its hard to believe that The Ohio Players and Funkadelic were once label mates... with the exception of the Junie Morrison connection. And like Funkadelic and a lot of other groups that left that label for bigger fame, the band might have gotten more polished, but NOT more funky.

Listen to this album to hear a band less dominated by Sugar's trademark voice and the trademark ARP string ensemble, but a very urban sounding funk band crossing various musical thresholds... the horns are agressive, Junie's organ sizzles... the tunes bump, the album covers titilate (wonder whatever happened to the bald chick ?)... There's nothing soft... Tune like Pain, Pleasure and the Funky Worm make you want to bump.

If you like this album, keep an eye out for Junie's solo albums (which seem to go in and out of print) and other groups from that label including THE COUNTS, Funkadelic, Eddie Hazel and occasional WESTBOUND compilations !

I Just got this from Amazon and was floored by the Funk.I have most of their stuff from the Mercury Era but this Disc is Just as Tight.The Grooves are Just as Tight.Funky Worm&Pain Are Slamming.this Band was as Bad as any Group from Back in the day.there music is Timeless.

Finally, after all these years! All of the songs that put funk where it is today. Back then music was music and the Ohio Players lead the way. Every song on this cd is a hit! (or at least should've been). "Pain", "Pleasure" and "Funky Worm" are still slammin' nearly 30 years later. These guys were ahead of their time!

Dear old St Nick does exist and he will make my holidays very happy. An ex-boy friend gave me a cassette of Royal Rappin's. By the time it had worn it out, our relationship had also gone to ashes. I still LOVE the music and the messages Ike and Millie sing. I am so happy to find the CD. Maybe it will last longer or at least I know where to find another, CD that is!

This is one of my most favorite CDs. Isaac Hayes and Millie Jackson are two powerhouses joined together on one CD filled with soul and then some. I would love for them to join their powerful and passionate voices together more often.

The Vanguard recordings of Doc Watson are to folk music what the Carter Family is to country. Through a vigorous touring and recording schedule in the '60s, Doc introduced millions to songs that have since become standards for artists like Bob Dylan, Richard Buckner, and Gillian Welch. Bluegrass Essential .......2006-02-07

While we are in the midst of a belated folk revival, a number of compilations of this bluegrass master's work have been produced. In many senses, these are great. But if your funds are limited and you want the best Doc Watson studio session, or one representative CD - you've found it.

Made by Vanguard, back in the days when the coherence of moods on a record had something to do with its acceptance, Southbound is not only a dazzling glissade of pickin' (esp. the title cut) - but is a recording with atmosphere, and well, wisdom.

Most everyone loves the oft covered "Tennessee Stud" - most haunting, however, is "Call of the Road" which, like Dylan's "Lonesome Hobo", cuts to the core. My only critique here is that Watson is almost too polished a musician too ever convey the raw side of emotion (although he can evoke the depths) - the rawness which everyone of those classic delta blues people effortlessly project. Yet, in its own right, Southbound endures as one of the true monuments of folk. Profound, moving, plain song, in the best sense of the word, with as many shifts in mood and feeling as there are in the day.

Six Star, an historic and controversial album you need it.......2004-04-21

I can remember the controversy this album caused when I bought it in the summer of 1967 was it? I remember taking up to play it at the home of a great fiddler with the banjo player in our band (I was what passed for a guitarist then). I remember the shock it engendered as well as the smiles. Then I remember 15 minutes ago, still disputing its importance and reference to the history of folk music collection and production on an e-mail list composed of world-class scholars and pickers of this kind of music. If you don't have it, buy it.

This is Doc Watson unleashed. He is no longer just providing traditional folk music renditions for the true folklore crowd. He and his now late son Merle are there to present the kind of music of broad mixtures that they wanted to play and share.

We have everything from real blues and banjo music, to a hot swing jazz rendition of Sweet Georgia Brown, and soft pop jazzy Chet Atkins stuff. We have singer song writer music like Last Thing on Your mind, and ersatz folk music arranged to sound like pop folk in Alberta. We have new songs written by Doc and Merle like Southbound.

We have an explosion of talent, creativity, a new direction in music that foretells the great acoustic mixture of country, bluegrass, folk, jazz, and swing played at virtuosi a level that was to become a great blend of music not only for the Doctor, but for thousands of musicians and millions of listeners in the 35 years since.

Most of all this is a warm sweet fun album. It is an album that takes the weariness off your back, puts a smile back on your face, and may make it easier for you to get warm and friendly with someone you love! For the musician Doc and Merle goes beyond what we had thought was mind blowing abilities in "The Song of the Road" where Doc flat picks flamingo and in "Sweet Georgia Brown" where Doc takes on an all time show off take off tune and demolishes all previous pretenders to the guitar except maybe Django Rheinhart's version which may only be equaled here, and in "Nashville Pickin'" where tells the old boys on Music Row that the Doc is a comin'.

All this makes me think of is really great single malt whiskey, fine food, served out on a beautiful balcony with a good friend. Get this if you don't have it. If you have it, you might not be secure with just one copy!

Wait! Let me explain.......2003-07-31

Having just reviewed Treasures Untold and given it 5 stars, I have to give this less. Say, 3.2 - 3.4. Right away that may rub people the wrong way but it's not that I don't like this album. I quite do like it, but for me it's a much more uneven album than Treasures Untold. Almost everything on that disc just totally moves me. From dancing to tears. Southbound most definitely has several excellent tracks, and there's nothing necessarily "bad" about the others, but some of it doesn't really engage me emotionally.

Having said that, yes, if you like Doc Watson you should own this cd. That Was The Last Thing On My Mind and Riddle Song are just excellent. Two gorgeous melodies worked to perfection by Doc's playing and vocals. These are the types of things that I'd hope could make anyone a Doc Watson fan. Also I love Call Of The Road simply because it strikes me as Spanish background music for a great Western flick.

Alberta and Tennessee Stud are also at the top of this recording. I guess it's just that a couple of the tracks on here have a bit of an antiseptic studio feel to me. They just don't feel nearly as expressive as do other things in the Doc Watson world.

The top of the heap stuff on this disc is great though. I have never even remotely regretted buying this cd.

HILLBILLY MASTERPIECE FROM FLATPICKING WIZARD.......2000-08-29

Man! Is this the greatest record or what!? I've never heard singing (and sometimes yodeling) that's so authentic and deeply felt. I've never heard acoustic country guitar playing that sounds so pure despite the very formidable technique used. Doc is very much a 'progressive' musician, strongly influenced by blues and jazz players; yet he never strays too far from the DEEP ROOTS which are his foundation. These roots are 'backwoods' country, but as unmistakably American as Mark Twain, John Wayne, Apple Pie and Norman Rockwell combined. The songs here run the gamut from the most beautifully and heatbreakingly sad possible ("Alberta"), to the most peaceful and mellow imaginable ("Southbound"),' to joyful instrumental odes ("Nashville Pickin',""Sweet Georgia Brown,"), and a stoically triumphant and hilarious yodeling classic ("Never No More Blues.") All in all, one of the best records in my collection and the ABSOLUTE ANTITHESIS of all the garbage peddled by the millions in country music today.

A lengendary album.......1999-09-02

For anyone who doesn't know Doc Watson, pay attention: here is possibly the greatest flat picker who ever lived. My father has had this album for over 30 years, and he knows every single note to it. I've been listening to it for about two years and I know most of them too. This is pure American music at its heart, expressed by a man with a great appreciation for the soul and emotion behind the music. Doc Watson is technically and innovatively brilliant. The songs aren't only folk, but everything else. 'The Call of the Road' and 'Windy and Warm' sound almost like flamenco. 'The Riddle Song' is a sweet love ballad. And there are no words to describe the guitars of Doc, his son Merle, and John Pilla. I saw him in concert a few weeks ago, and he is as fast and rich as he was on this record, almost 35 years ago.

Foul language with great memories.......2007-05-25

I couldn't believe I'd gotten this on CD, it was so long ago I'd heard it (LP-times!). She tells great stories with stories and songs, many using pretty foul language, but I remember them from some really great drag shows a long time ago and talk about memory lane! I was right back in the small, grimy, bur fun lesbian bar in the early 80's with totally mad drag queens, one lip synching to nasty Milly Jackson music, two in the morning, everyone pretty high, it was a great party.

I believe Jackson is now more Christian in her recording, but I sure hope she doesn't rue her past. It was great. I'm happy for her now and I thank her for what she was doing back then.

Like many a Millie fan...I wore the album out. It is wonderful to have posession of this great live performance, once again. I'm surprised how new friends are taken by Millie's......well..you know what I mean.

Motormouth Millie: At Her Raunchy Best [4 and half stars].......2007-01-11

She is not only a great singer - she can sing and shout with great pitch, and I consider her raspy growl as enjoyable as the voices of Etta James, Gladys Knight, Irma Thomas, and even Aretha Franklin - she is also a comedian who, whether in song or addressing the audience, can be as funny as Mo'Nique, Sheryl Underwood, Sommore, Margaret Cho, Wanda Sykes, and maybe even Redd Foxx. These live recordings showcase both her vocal and comedic range.

LIVE AND UNCENSORED (with "Live and Outrageous" as a "bonus CD") consists of 25 songs on 2 discs, comprised of 1979's "Live and Uncensored" (tracks 1-17 on disc one & tracks 1-7 on disc two) and 1982's "Live and Outrageous" (tracks 8-15 on disc two). Discs packaged in flip-open black jewel case; total running time: 137:35. Booklet includes musician personnel, songwriting credits, one grainy black & white photograph, a Los Angeles Times quote, and location of the live performances. Sound quality is excellent.

"Live and Uncensored" was recorded at the Roxy Theater in Los Angeles; "Live and Outrageous" was recorded at Mr. Vee's Figure 8 in Atlanta. Backing vocalists at the Roxy performance are credited as: Ray, Goodman & Brown; Pure Gold; Brandye; Lonnie Youngblood. Backing vocalists for the Atlanta performance are Carol Bigger, Yvonne Hodges, and Vicki Hampton. Recording dates are not provided.

Many of the songs segue into the next, and some are done as medleys. The first few tracks do just this. "Keep the Home Fires Burning" momentarily goes into the Blues song "Rock Me Baby"; her rap (monolog set to music), "Logs and Thangs", momentarily goes into The Jones Girls' "You Gonna Make Me Love Somebody Else". Then she sings an up-tempo version of "Put Something Down on It" that segues (in a separate track) into Rod Stewart's "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy". She later pairs her ballads "What Am I Waiting For" and "I Still Love You (You Still Love Me)" in a beautiful fashion.

Millie's live "raps" (or monologs), as one might expect, are much more raunchy than the ones recorded in the studio - and hence more blunt, more "real", and even funnier. The "..... U Symphony", which some may recognize from the documentary film "Wigstock", is Millie's self-proclaimed foray into "classical music" and features her "directing debut" of a chorus singing the f-word to a Beethoven/Bach-inspired melody. Her introduction to the song includes a "shout-out" to celebrity attendees the Pointer Sisters and Millie's hilarious commentary regarding her fans and detractors.

There isn't a bad song in the bunch. There is her extended analysis of the absurdity of daytime dramas, "The Soaps"; her versions of "Didn't I (Blow Your Mind This Time)"; and Kenny Rogers's "Sweet Music Man" (Be warned that while given a separate track, she only sings 51 seconds of "Hurts So Good" at the end of "Sweet Music Man"). Disc one ends with "Give It Up", where she comments about how "women's lib ...and the gay movement" has taken over, and a funky version of "A Moment's Pleasure".

Her 1982 performance begins with "Passion", which is followed by "A Horse or Mule"; the latter is a short monolog where she discusses how her commercially unsuccessful Country music album (1981's "Just a Lil' Bit Country") led to her recording another live album. She seems less playful and more aggressive (even hostile) here, but she is still funny, even when her comments are of a racial nature (as on "I Had to Say It", which concludes with what seems to be an impromptu homage to the funky music of James Brown). She also ups the ante in regards to profanity, which some of us appreciate. The set includes a rendition of Lionel Richie's "Still".

I only wish there was a video of her performances!

This is a must-have for Millie Jackson fans. I only wish there were more than two live albums. With good music and funny commentaries, this CD is enjoyable on multiple levels.

The MANY Sides of Millie Jackson.......2006-11-18

This CD issue is actually a combination of 2 Millie Jackson live albums, the double album, Live and Uncensored from 1979, and the single disk, Live and Outrageous from 1980. The CD follows the same order of each live
album.

Both of these releases show off the unique and unihibited delivery of Millie. Ms. Jackson's adult side is well represented with tracks like, Never Change Your Lover In The Middle of The Night, If Loving You Is Wrong I Don't Wanna Be Right, I Had To Say It, and Logs n Thangs. Her infamous Phuch You Symphony takes her adult humor to a new level, and this "classical revamp" is still featured in her shows from time to time.

Millie can also interpet a song like no one else, forget about calling these songs "cover songs", when Millie sings a song made famous by another artist, her version makes the track her own. Toto's, Hold The Line,
Lionel Richie's Still, Kenny Rogers, Sweet Music Man, Kenny Logins This Is It, and Rod Stewarts, Do Ya Think I'm Sexy all get a "Mille Revamp", and the songs are all better for it.

Sweet Music Man gets a special node for both her passionate rap about relationships, and the inclusion of one of her first hits, Hurts So Good, worked into the middle of it. Another rap not to be missed is The Soaps, trust this reviewer you will never look at a Soap Opera the same again.

On the original release of Live and Uncensored (that was recorded at the LA icon, The Roxy), a music critic for the LA Times, stated that "Millie is better than Bette Midler, and" he also listed a number of notable female singers of the time. He gets no argument from me.

Yet another superb entry in Ace's short series of Expanded Versions of Millie Jackson's original Spring albums.

"Hurts So Good" first appeared in 1973, on the back of Ms. Jackson's Top 3 R&B/Top 30 Pop US success with its title track (her all-time biggest US hit, by the way). Its appearance also marked the first time that Millie recorded in the famous southern soul town of Muscle Shoals, Alabama - where her major subsequent successes "Caught Up" and "Still Caught Up" (both also available in this series) would be recorded in their entirety.

This newly remastered version, from the original Spring album production master, adds a generous six bonus tracks, including a first-ever true stereo mix of Millie's non-album 45 "Breakaway", several very different mixes of some of the album's highlights and two `one take' demos that Millie never recorded `finished' versions of.

Once again issued with the co-operation and participation of Ms. Jackson herself, this is an hour's worth of seminal Millie that no true fan or collector will care to be without.

Second best thing to a Box set.......2001-04-16

While its a nice idea to have all Millie Jakson charted singles in one place,nevertheless she was a singer who achieved her best work on several concept albums,so it would be much better to have her work in Box set.For example,her ground-breaking "Caught Up" album in these circumstances is presented only with one song (and without famous "rap") so it doesnt not show the depth of the whole story.Just as Marvin Gaye cannot be understand just though his hit singles,to listen Millie's original albums in full lenght is required listening to understand what she achieved.What is obvious here is that she was fantastic singer from the start - her very first single "Child Of God" is still one of her best songs - and that she kept her own high standards though 17 albums presented here in a nutshell.As I own some of the listed albums,I know for sure that "singles" are perhaps the most obvious,but not neccesary the best selection.This is a very good compilation,but its just a glimpse to what made Millie great - as for me,I would continue to look for her original albums because they are supposed to be heard as they were,with or without hit singles.

Millie Jackson outdoes herself on this one and only country music sung by a true soul diva. Here, the songs are absent of her usual raunchiness but never the less her deep, soulfull voice belts out these country classsics which remind one of the blues.

This c.d. is a don't miss for those Millie J. collectors.

They should have done an anthology .......2005-01-16

I love the Fatback Band, but the reason I am giving it a 3 instead of a five is there are a lot of good songs missing. What they should have done is a sort of anthology, dividing the 70s from the 80s funk and included a lot more hot songs. I was really disappointed because this doesn't cover the entire scope. I guess it's better to just go out and buy the Fatback Band CDs that move you the most and enjoy the songs on them. It's more expensive, but this Best of CD just doesn't cut it.

"Hard Times is Worth a Listen!".......2007-01-11

I have to say that Millie Jackson's Hard Times CD is worth a listen. Its songs focus on going through the rough times of life and surviving. Even the CD cover catches attention featuring Millie in a grocery checkout line with a shocked expression on her face after hearing the bill! Lol!
Our course "Mess on your Hands" is the main album gem, especially for fans of Millie's hardcore persona, but "Hard Times", "We're Gonna Make It" and "I Don't want to Cry" are great blues survival songs to listen to during rough life situations.
Although the CD is not without flaws, it is definitely worth a listen for Millie Jackson fans.

Buy it, just for one song. It's worth it........2005-10-26

This is not one of my favorite Millie Jackson albums. However, the first song I ever heard by her was "Mess On Your Hands," which sparked my now 20 year interest in her music. "Mess On Your Hands/Finger Rap" are alone worth the price of the album. Somehow both hilarious and poignant, the song showcases Millie's vocals and her bawdy sense of humor. The rest of the album is funky and not bad, but the only other cut that really distinguishes itself is "Feel Love Comin' On." But, for fans of her 70's and early 80's work (you know who you are), it is a mandatory purchase.
