5 out of 5 stars Schenker is one of the best guitar players of all time.......2006-12-21

Listen to the guitar solo on the 'Save Yourself' track from this McAuley Schenker Group album. It's just mind blowing guitar work and I'm a die hard Van Halen, Hendrix, Led Zep and AC/DC fan. Schenker just did not get the recognition he truly deserved in the U.S, but he deserves to be on any top 100 guitarists of all time list. This album is worth buying for just the 'Save Yourself' track if you love blistering 80's style guitar playing from a player who is right up there with Eddie Van Halen and Hendrix. Overall the album is very good with one or two weak tracks. I have owned this album since it was originally released in 1989 and I seen this band live once around the same time. I pull this album out every six months or so and listen to the 'Save Yourself' track which has always blown me away.

5 out of 5 stars MSG AT ITS BEST.......2006-08-28

The guitar work is great, like satriani surfing with the alien with vocals.every song stylisticly different every solo as well

4 out of 5 stars The BEST of the MSG albums.......2005-10-20

"Perfect Timing", the precursor to "Save Yourself", introduced everybody to the awesome vocals of Robin McAuley. Schenker himself must've known there was something special going on here in his band if he retitled the band "McAULEY-Schenker Group" rather than go with the usual "Michael Schenker Group" moniker. While "P.T." was a good album, "Save Yourself" proved to be Schenker's best commerical effort of his solo career. Don't get disillusioned by the word "commercial", though. It just illustrates that the songs were his best songwriting attempt, before or since, to capture the ear of the average rock fan in addition to the diehards who knew him since his UFO days or guitar fanatics. Lord knows everyone I lent my tape to back then, who'd never heard him, usually ended up asking me "Who IS this guy and where can I get some more of his stuff?"
The band came flying out of the gate from the get go with the neo-classical-ish "Save Yourself" and never let up. Unlike neo-classical "god" Yngwie Malmsteen, however, the songs were't limp excuses to allow Schenker to solo endlessly. They were ACTUALLY songs!!
The sound and songs, though, now seem very much from that late 80s metal period, but tracks such as "Anytime" and the sweet instrumental "There Has to Be Another Way", among others, are still enjoyable to listen to. The album description lists "Take Me Back" as a bonus track but as I recall from my cassette of the album, which I still have, "Take Me Back" was part of that medium's songlist too. "Vicious", on the other hand, is new to all the mediums (LP, Cassette, & CD). Such was the push to get MSG on the pubic consciousness that the band actually did a video for "Anytime", thus probably explaining the [Single Edit] version included on the CD.
Alas, while the band did exceedingly well with this album and was largely the same lineup from the "Perfect Timing" session, the follow-up CD entitled "MSG" would see the band whittled down on the album art to just McAuley & Schenker, with no signs of the rest of the band; unlike as was the case in "Perfect Timing" and "Save Yourself".
If you're looking for a good introduction to Michael Schenker without first trying UFO's "Strangers in the Night" live album (another EXCELLENT must-have) THIS is the place to start!

5 out of 5 stars This album ROCKS!.......2004-11-03

Some of the best Schenker melodies and solos ever. I wore this CD out in the 80's (is that possible?) and somehow lost it over several moves. Now I've rediscovered it again and am loving every minute of it. Every track sizzles. Strong hooks, great harmonic solos, and that trademark "solo fade out" that no one can match. McAuley's vocals are powerful and are just as strong as Schenker's fretwork. By far one of the best Schenker albums. All I can say is buy it, turn it up, and enjoy!

1 out of 5 stars A weak folow-up to Perfect Timing.......2004-06-11

I thought 1987's "Perfect Timing" was a fantastic record, so when MSG put out "Save Yourself" two years later, I was really looking forward to it. Apparently they used up all their creative juices on the first release.

Aside from Anytime (which is great) and "Shadow of the Night" (pretty good), the rest of the album is filled with exceedingly mediocre songs.

5 out of 5 stars SEEK OUT AND FIND THE LIGHT.......2005-10-08

This album is obviously not as good as "I want some", their 1999 release. It should be obtained at all costs by you. And while you're doing that you may get this album and begin to appreciate cool music.

4 out of 5 stars LET'S SPAWN.......2005-05-08

Was recommended this by a friend, and what a wonderful, joyful bundle of fun it is! Never a dull moment, great musicianship and ends off with two killer songs - C'Mon Let's Spawn just begs to be played at full volume and Hey Joe has to surely be, alongside Cake's I Will Survive, the coolest cover version in the world..........ever! David Candy's solo stuff is worth checking out too.

5 out of 5 stars Not soul music, but something else entirely.......2002-04-19

First off, I've read a couple of reviews of this record that have bashed it for not being true soul music. That's true, it's not. It's a combination of the old Nation of Ulysses sound and soul music, and the result is neither punk nor soul. It's the sound of the Make Up, and if you know them you know what I mean. This is my favorite record by Ian and co., and apparently it's their last. Which is a damn shame, since they kept getting better and better.

It's also a damn shame that these guys are grouped into that whole '90s indie movement and listed alongside the other usual suspects the college kids dig: Blonde Redhead, Belle and Sebastian, etc. They're really a killer rock group, with none of the emtional distance or pseudo-everything image the label 'indie' entails. No ringer t-shirts or ironic cover songs here (that version of 'Hey Joe' is played ncie and straight like it should be). Grab this and In Mass Mind and go from there.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty good.......2001-12-11

this Cd is pretty good. Not as good as their other Cd's, but very soulful and fun, and intelligent. If you like this album, i suggest you check out maybe Jon Spencer, The Strokes, or The Statue Factor.

5 out of 5 stars The best Make Up album next to "I Want Some".......2001-11-24

This is their last album. It's well produced and the songs are excellent. "I am pentagon" is sooooo cool it aint even possible to describe it. A friend of mine hated all the other Make Up albums, but he actually owns this one. It is more musicianly music? Maybe more psychedelic than any of the others (my friend is a big 13th Floor Elevators fan)too.

I dont know how these guys will hold up historically. They seem very retro in many ways. Not just how the dress and write songs, but even the way they record and produce their records. It's more a true retro replication than a Lenny Kravitz stylized retro chic thang. The gospel element certainly make them all the more bizarre.

5 out of 5 stars Fire from Lindholm.......2001-11-17

This set contains four records with two abridged live performances. I have as yet only listened to the performance from 1974. This is one of the first pirated records to appear with the Swedish dramatic soprano Berit Lindholm. Let us hope that recordings from the Ring conducted by Sir Colin Davis at Covent Garden will appear soon! Meanwhile this Tristan from Amsterdam 1974 fills the gap with a truly amazing dramatic force. You can feel the amazement and tension among the public, crying out their "bravos" at the end. This is Lindholm's evening and a great one ideed. Totally involved in her part she becomes Isolde and everything catch fire... No Wagnerian or other opera lover can be without these records. The first two CD's concentrates on the part of Isolde (1974).The performance from 1979 (not with Lindholm)concentrates on the tenor, Spas Wenkoff - more comments will follow when I have listened to that. For the moment, the 5 stars are for the 1974 recording.

5 out of 5 stars Exactly what modern-day indie-punk should be..........2006-10-09

This group of guys from Columbia, SC have been entertaining many fans for years in the local music scene, and have recently begun to demand attention from wider audiences, enough to gain them a spot on the 2005 Warped Tour lineup. This is the first full-length release from Burns Out Bright, and they not only continue to make their current fans salivate with pleasure, but they even step it up a notch with a wider palette of sonic euphoria. The sounds and songwriting on Save Yourself A Lifetime seem more mature and more developed than their past releases, but still retain a certain raw effect that shows that the band has no intentions of "selling out" to any mainstream ideas. In fact, a decent portion of the album contains lyrics that not only stick a middle finger up to today's mainstream rock, but also bring up questions of the current state of indie and punk music while begging for a revolution in the underground scene.

The music itself can sometimes sound slightly similar to many sub-genres in the indie and punk scenes, but never pigeonholes itself into any particular one, creating something original and fresh. The album is definitely worth buying, but if you ever get a chance to see this band live, don't miss it. Their shows are extremely energetic, and this is coming from someone who has seen them at least 5 times, and I've been blown away every single time. Whatever your taste in music, if you're looking for something fresh and unique, look no further than this album.

Album Description

Fronted by gorgeous pop-nymph Jill Jackson, Speedway are the latest must-hear act from Scotland. Essentially a duo (keyboardist & drummer Jim Duguid co-writes all the songs with Jackson) the band have been augmented by Dan Sells (guitar) & Tom Swann (bass) for their live sound - creating a traditional female-fronted band dynamic that should see them mentioned in the same breathe as the Pretenders & the Eurythmics before too long. Their debut album is jam-packed with cracking pop-rock anthems that will form the ideal backdrop to rom-coms & girlie dramas throughout 2004. Second single 'Can't Turn Back' is a hustling American-style rocker reminiscent of Alannah Myles whilst 'Thinking About You Lately' recalls the dizzy brilliance of Texas. Elsewhere 'Walk On By' is epic romanticism & 'Always Here' is a requisite slow closer. A magnificent album that shocks with its maturity, composure & downright

4 out of 5 stars Great New Music From Scotland.......2006-03-18

I was in Glasgow watching TV an saw a Video Clip with that gorgeous blod and a sound version of gennie in the bottle. I liked a lot, and asked for the CD, which is really a good novelty for those who like females singers' R&R bands

5 out of 5 stars Delicious British pop rock band - pure catchy danceable fun!.......2005-09-27

Do you like Blondie, The Pretenders, or the Scottish band Texas? So how would you feel about a rocking guitar band fronted by a stunning nymph with the looks, the style, the attitude and - above all - the *voice* that can reduce you to putty? If you appreciate Sharleen Spiteri-style vocals and tomboyish swagger, and you understand the rare delight of sparkling pop melodies, then it's about time you made the acquaintance of Jill Jackson and Speedway.

Believe me, most bands would be thrilled to have written any one of these pop gems, let alone an album full. There were apparently several reasons why Save Yourself didn't become a huge commercial success in the UK. Firstly Speedway were signed to the wrong record label, who made them tour as a support act for the boy band Blue. Secondly the album opens with the only disappointing song, Juggernaut. If you listen to the sample tracks, please ignore Juggernaut! And heaven only knows why the record company insisted they release a cover song, Genie in a Bottle, as a single. Every other original song on the album is irresistably catchy. My personal favourites are Talk To Me, Seven Nights, Save Yourself, Walk on By, Last Surprise and Always Here.

This album can get anyone up and dancing, I guarantee it, and Jill Jackson's voice can only be described as gorgeous. If I haven't said enough already, then maybe you're looking for an album by a boy band? :)

5 out of 5 stars Speedway's the new rock!.......2004-12-04

Speedway's really great. Their debut single - Christina Aguilera's Genie in a Bottle - really rocks. I fell in love with Speedway's music just from that song alone; imagine the rest of the songs in that album. Their songs are different and really catchy. Each individual song is superb. I have no favourites. No, let me correct that. I have my favourites - All the songs in Speedway's debut album are my favourites! This is a really must-buy album, if you ask me. The singer, Jill Jackson, has really a great voice. I have become a great fan of Speedway. Get the album! Or you'll regret it for sure...

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2004-03-16

After seeing Speedway on tour with Blue, and not having heard of them before then, I left the concert thinking (apart from how amazing blue had been) that I definately wanted to hear more about Speedway. Having been described in some papers as poppy rock, and a rock band with a photogenic lead singer, their catchy tracks with noticable rocky edge left me eager to hear more. A few months later their 2nd single Can't Turn Back (follow up to a cover of Genie in A Bottle) was released, shortly followed by the debut album, save yourself. What can I say? It's been playin in my car cd player ever since I bought it. As well as the singles, there's loads of catchy tunes and a few slower tracks still with rocky edge. Personally I love track 4 - Overdrive. The melody and lyrics are catchy and I think it would do really well in the charts. The album opens with Juggernaut, another catchy rock number that before too long you can't help singing along to. But don't fear that the excellent start can't be maintained, the final tracks "All The Matters" and "Always Here" are as great as Juggernaut and In & Out. And all the tracks inbetween keep you hooked.
Even if you've not heard of Speedway, or heard their music, if you like anything with a rock edge to it, but not too hardcore - there's no screaming and screeching, believe me Jill can sin - then you'll love this album!
