KDHT-FM in Denver broadcast a number of live shows from Ebbets Field in the 70s. Many of them circulate among traders of live shows, and this is one of them. I've heard a copy from FM and it's pretty good for what it is but it's not commercial quality. I don't know whether Pilot paid royalties to the band or not. I can't say it's a bootleg because I simply don't know, but other reviewers' comments and the fact that the show was broadcast suggest it might be. My 3 star rating is because I had to provide some rating to add this comment. I have not heard the Pilot release.

No PPL without Craig Fuller........2002-02-14

This CD is terrible. Buy their greatest hits CD's. Without Craig Fuller on lead vocals, they don't resemble PPL in any way.
Fuller has just rejoined the group and is not on this CD. They are supposed to have a new CD out sometime soon but have not heard about the release date. I've heard the new songs on the new CD and they are great. Buy the new CD when it is released or go back and buy one of their greatest hits CD's listed on Amazon.

Songs of Pure Harmony.......2002-01-16

This album is not for the casual observer of Pure Prairie League, but it is great for the hard core fan of one of the seminal country/rock bands of the 70's. The mix varies from being somewhat poor to very good in places, so if you're a first time listener to PPL, you're better off to get studio album(s). This album actually sounds like an excellent plus bootleg.

My first observation is that Craig Fuller, one of the founding members of PPL is NOT on this album. Listen to the band introductions before track 6. He's not mentioned. Until recently, Craig never toured with the band. He was drafted during Viet Namn after their second album, and spent his time as a Conciencous Objector working as a VA hospital orderly in Ohio. He missed out on the commercial popularity of Amy, and was not with the band on this album. The best songs on this album were, however, penned by Fuller, so his influence is heard throughout the record. Second, the liner notes are incorrect in several places. Larry Goshorn is listed as playing bass. He was actually their lead guitar player. Mike Reilly, who is not listed at all, is playing bass and handling most of the lead vocals. Most of the photos for this album are taken from PPL's live album, "Taking the Stage" from 1978.

All this being said, I am enjoying this album immensely, and highly recomend it to PPL fans. Well worth the money. John David Call's pedal steel work (and banjo) is superior to just about any steel player you have heard. This album has the "feel" of being at one of their live shows, with inspired, heartfelt vocal work and musicianship. It is representative of the work that made them a great live band and one of the better country/rock bands of the era.

I must say, I love the Blase CD! I listen to it all the time in the car, at work, at the gym. It is definitely a must have for your gospel collection. Trust me if it wasn't a great CD I wouldn't waste my time typing a review. If you don't have the CD you need to buy it now!

Album Description

For the band's second album, Seattle's Evangeline has added a touch more Midwestern grit and rock & roll kick to its honest and open country-rock sound, and 2003's Big Choice manages to improve on one of the more impressive alt-country debuts of the past few years. While the band doesn't exactly bash it out on Big Choice (and it hardly seems in the group's nature to do so), "Little World" and "Tupelo" boast a few shades more guitar-driven fire than Evangeline delivered on Felt Like Home and songwriter and sometimes vocalist Chris Cline's tales of regular guy angst and romantic frustration suggest a marriage of Paul Westerberg's eloquent gripe and the Jayhawks sweetly lovelorn contemplation of the plains. Cline is also lucky to have a vocalist as good as Jennifer Potter on board to interpret his material; with a voice that sounds rich but silky and sweet at the same time, Potter is a simply wonderful singer, and her performances here show flashes of the grace and! gravity Emmylou Harris displayed on her early sides. And though Evangeline isn't much for showboating, that's also one of the strengths of Big Choice - the musicians give this material a strong, concise delivery that's clean, realistic, and satisfying, and Cline and Kevin Suggs are both top-shelf pickers when they step into the spotlight. No jokes, no irony, just ten great songs played with heart, soul, and clarity - Big Choice makes it clear that Evangeline isn't just another act with potential - it's a band with talent and vision that knows how to make its music work in the studio, and has made a lovely album that's well worth your attention.

As opposite of Austrian "Document" label that offers "collected work" of ancient artists - frankly,interesting but a bit much - British ASV is specialised in compilation of 1920 and 1930's music in a much "digestible" way.This wonderful compilation,with 79 minutes of music is a great introduction to a long gone names whose music still sparkle after decades.I had already used opportunity to hear Al Jolson,Eddie Cantor,Annette Hanshaw and Ruth Etting on their ASV albums,but there were other names I wanted to check and this compilation was a easy way to hear music before I order complete albums of somebody.What we have here is really fun music,even at the moments when ballads were supposed to be sad (Al Jolson chest-beating in the meantime became unintentionally funny).CD opens with young and awful-voiced Marlene Dietrich singing her signature song "Falling In Love Again" which sounds much much different than her later versions (later she honed it to a perfection,here she was just a young german woman who was falling in and out of pitch),and what follows is really glowing with humour.Maybe some listeners will recognise Cab Calloway's "Minnie The Moocher" from "Blues Brothers" movie.I loved great Paul Robeson and Fred Astaire,but lovely,happy "Louise" by Maurice Chevalier,brethtaking vocal acrobatics by The Mills Brothers,Ink Spots and wonderful "Leaning On A Lamp Post" by George Formby are highlits for me.And yes,West Indian singer-pianist Hutch sound like Nina Simone grandfather,same dead serious,wobbly voice!

If you are into classic old songs, by the people that made them famous, this is the album for you. It's a load of all the great singers, who sang these great melodies, if your in the mood for Dietrich, Astaire, Maurice Chevalier, Glenn Miller, this is definetly the best I've heard from all of them.
