Album Description
In the Blondie tradition, The Sounds are fronted by a standout blonde. They have a penchant for swelling dramatic choruses with dancey 80s drums & candy coated riffs. This is an enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks & multimedia computer files. Enhancements include two previously unreleased tracks, a dance remix of 'Rock 'n Roll,' three European videos, photos, & weblinks. New Line. 2003.Customer Reviews:
Good, but pick up their sophomore album first.......2007-06-27
One Catchy CD!.......2007-04-23
I agree the Sounds will one way or another (no pun intended) remind you of Blondie. I also agree with most of the other reviewers that Maja's voice is something of an aquired taste. She reminds me of Debbie Harry, but she reminds me of a less melodious Harry-- such as the rougher parts of "One Way or Another" or the rapping part of "Rapture". I can see how not everyone is apt to warm up to her enough to want a whole CD of her singing, but she has a unique sound and I enjoy it. Perhaps it would be best to listen to the samples on the Amazon page or on the Sounds' MySpace page before making any purchasing decisions. Here's a quick breakdown of the songs:
Tracks 1-3, "Seven Days A Week", "Dance With Me", and "Living in America" start the album off just right. "Dance With Me" may make you to actually dance to it.
Track 4, "Hit Me!", is my least favorite track and probably showcases the negatives of Maja's voice more than any other track. I think it could've done with some better lyrics. You'd think a song with an exclaimation point in the title would be a little more powerful, but this is not the case. It builds up nicely though and, like every song on the disc, has a great beat.
Everything from track 5 to 8 ("Mine For Life", "Rock 'N Roll", "Like A Lady", "Reggie") is gold to me.
With track 9, "Fire", I like it a little less than the preceding tracks but it's still a good song. This one and track 10, "Hope You're Happy Now", sort of lose me at the refrains. I think like "Hit Me!" they could have benefited with some lyrical adjustments but they are solid enough that I can't bring myself knock an entire star off of this CD just because these two and "Hit Me!" don't quite make my Favorites list.
Track 11, "Riot" is awesome and the untitled final track, "S.O.U.N.D.S", is a neat way to end the disc off.
Great stuff.......2007-03-25
If you listened to Dying to Say This to You - try this one out!.......2007-01-19
But it's nobody's business what I do or please.......2006-08-12
About this whole debate as to whether Maja is a competent vocalist or not. My opinion is that yes, she's got a good voice with some interesting lyrics. Sure there are much more talented singers out there but I couldn't imagine this band being fronted by a more charismatic person. Maja really does beg your attention, good or bad.
So the CD starts off on the highest of notes with Seven Days A Week which really feels like a rock song from years past. This song is where you'll decide very quickly if you like Maja or not. The title track, Living In America, is quite possibly the best song featured. With driving guitars (well, driving in The Sounds' case), a memorable chorus, and some nice electronic sounds, if you're looking to get into The Sounds, just listen to this track. Rock'n Roll is a nice slower track where Maja kind of puts her voice on display, a good song to listen to if you're looking to mellow out. Reggie has that 'familiar' feel to it thanks to the chorus, a great track nonetheless. Riot is another terrific song. It's an in-your-face type track with some pretty good lyrics and a great beat.
All in all The Sounds have become one of my favorite bands thanks to they're different-ness. Listen to the radio for a day. I am willing to bet that you won't hear anything like them, but of course I haven't listened to the radio in close to a year, so then again, maybe there is. But nevertheless, The Sounds are nothing short of a great band and I hope they'll be around for a long time to come.
My favorite songs are Seven Days A Week, Living In America, Hit Me!, Rock'n Roll, and Riot. If you're skeptical about this CD, or the band, after reading all the reviews, just listen for yourself. I love The Sounds, but that's not to say that you will. Preferences my friend, preferences.

Beautiful music........2007-01-10
5 stars for performance, 4 stars due to omissions.......2006-08-29
Simple reason.
The producers at Silva, for wahtever reason, decided to cut down their SHE suites and Hands of the Ripper suites.
On the previous Hammer releases, "Draculas - Classic Horror Films", released in 1993, recorded in 1989, they had seven additional minutes of "Hands of the Ripper" that could have been included on this set.
Additionally, The Devil Rides Out: Film Music of James Bernard, released in 1997, recorded in 1995 and 1996 had about a minute more of additional music from SHE, PLUS about seven minutes worth of suites from Quatermass and X: The Unknown.
Both discs in this new re-issue round out at around 68 minutes, so there was room for some of these omissions.
Silva Screen gets big kudos for a reissuing these recordeings in the remastered HDCD format, but I don't understand these omissions. In fact, one of the tracks included, "Vampire Hunter" isn't even from a Hammer film, and its the only recording on this collection not on previous Silva CD's.
Again, 5 stars for the performances, the 1989 performances with Neil Richardson and the Philharmonia are fantastic. (Dracula, Dracula: Prince of Darkness, Dracula Has Risen From The Grave, Taste the Blood of Dracula, Hands of the Ripper, Vampire Circus.)
Additionally, The Westminster Philharmonic under the baton of Kenneth Alwyn do an excellent job as usual (Kiss of the Vampire, Curse of the Mummy's Tomb, She, THe Abominable Snowman, Quatermass II and Curse of the Werewolf.) Finally, the City of Prague Philharmonic, who get a bad rap more often than they deserve round out hte album and IMHO, deliver the goods, under the trusty batons of Paul Bateman (Scars of Dracula, Frankenstein Created Woman, additionally, Bateman also plays the piano solo on Kiss of the Vampire.) and Nic Raine (The Devil Rides Out, One Million Years BC, When Dinosuars Ruled the Earth, Creatures The World Forgot, The Vampire Hunter)
I'd give it 4.5 stars if I could.
Much thanks to producers David Wishart, Eric Tomlinson and James Fitzpatrick and recording engineers Mike Ross-Trevor, John Luard Timperley and Jan Holzner for contributing to these fine historical film music recordings.
"Hammer & Silva...raises the hair on the back of your neck".......2002-04-09
outstanding scores from James Bernard on Disc One ~ "DRACULA" (1958)..."KISS OF
THE VAMPIRE" (1964)..."DRACULA PRINCE OF DARKNESS"
(1966)..."FRANKENSTEIN CREATED WOMAN" (1967)..."THE DEVIL RIDES OUT"
(1968)..."DRACULA HAS RISEN FROM THE GRAVE" (1968)..."THE SCARS OF
DRACULA" (1970)..."TASTE THE BLOOD OF DRACULA" (1970)...even though the
blood doesn't flow as easily in "KISS OF THE VAMPIRE", the score from Bernard is
seductive, sensual to say the least for "creatures of the night", masked ball scene blends
atmospheric trance-masquerade themes, intoxicating main title is hauntingly mesmerizing with
"VAMPIRE RHAPSODY", just listen to the piano solo from our character in the film Carl
Ravna (Barry Warren), son of Dr. Ravna (Noel Willman) along with daughter Sabena Ravna
(Jacqueline Wallis), a cult of vampires in early 20th century Bavarian, praying on a young
honeymoon couple...Bernard's rhapsody captures the listeners heart and BLOOD!
Let's look at Disc Two with the other Hammer themes and their composers ~ "THE
ABOMINABLE SNOWMAN" (1957-Humphrey Searle)..."QUATERMASS II"
(1957-James Bernard)..."CURSE OF THE WEREWOLF" (1960-Benjamin
Frankel)..."CURSE OF THE MUMMY'S TOMB" (1964-Carlo Martelli)..."SHE"
(1965-James Bernard)..."ONE MILLION YEARS B.C." (1966-Mario
Nascimbene)..."WHEN DINOSAURS RULED THE EARTH" (1969-Mario
Nascimbene)..."HANDS OF THE RIPPER" (1971-Christopher Gunning)..."VAMPIRE
CIRCUS" (1971-David Whitaker)..."VAMPIRE HUNTER" (2000-James
Bernard)...difficult as it may be, there is a stand out ~ "THE CURSE OF THE
WEREWOLF", fine direction from Terence Fisher (director) with an outstanding cast Oliver
Reed (Leon-the Werewolf), Clifford Evans (Alfredo), Yvonne Romain (Servant Girl) and
Catherine Feller (Christina), Hammer's departure from the old stereotype of the beast is
refreshing, Reed's performance as the tormented sole, from man to wolf is touching, the score
by Ben Frankel is tense building at it's best, to say the least, setting the tone and mood for the
transformation with counterpoints is stimulating, inclusive orchestration development for what
lies ahead during a full moon.
Without a doubt the highlight pick hands down is "SHE", composer James Bernard gives of
himself without question, the SUITE takes the orchestra into lilting melodic exercises with
percussion chiming in, the harmonies are hypnotic blends of textured fabric, listen as The
Westminster Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Kenneth Alwyn display stirring strings and
a solo harp run the scales in "THE ETERNAL FLAME AND THE DESTRUCTION OF
SHE", hold-fast arrangement has haunting echoes of Bernard's constant theme, with a final
beat from a drum in the percussion section.
Must make mention the cast of players that made this possible ~ The Philharmonia Orchestra,
The City Of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, The Westminster Philharmonic Orchestra ~ and
their various conductors Kenneth Alwyn, Paul Bateman, Nic Raine and Neil
Richardson...supported by the illustrious staff from Silva Screen Records LTD ~ Reynold da
Silva (executive producer), David Stoner (associate producer), Gareth Williams (Dolby
Surround/HDCD Mastering) and of course James Fitzpatrick (compilation producer), who
has the knack of developing quality in every Silva Screen release...similar to "A History Of
Horror:From Nosferatu To The Sixth Sense" (SSD-1111/2CD Set), guaranteed to raise the
hair on the back of your neck!
Total Time: Disc One 68:01 on 14 Tracks & Disc Two 68:46 on 14 Tracks ~ Silva Screen
Records SSD-357 ~ (2002)

The exploits of Ian Fleming's British super-agent James Bond have long since become the longest running film series in history, spanning 40 years and counting. Not the least of the cycle's charm has been its music, a body of work that encompasses pop clichés (the twangy guitar of Monty Norman's original "James Bond Theme") and elegant underscores alike. While this collection spans music from Dr. No to The World Is Not Enough, decades of various legal entanglements prevented it from becoming the ultimate Bond music anthology. This is more a credible simulation, a newly recorded collection of cues and suites (including music previously unreleased on the original soundtracks) performed by Nic Raine and the City of Prague Symphony Orchestra. With John Barry's lush, ever-evocative scores both forming the core and setting the tone (but also featuring the work of George Martin, David Arnold, Michael Kamen, Bill Conti, and Eric Serra), it's the most comprehensive--if not exactly authentic--collection of Bond music yet attempted. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:
almost the perfect James Bond collection.......2005-07-20
Still, some tunes are missing(from for instance Thunderball and For Your Eyes Only)and most of the time the attention is on the instrumental version of the title track which is a bit of a shame. And yet, there are too many great pieces on this collection to make it a failure.Alpine Drive,Dawn Raid at Fort Knox,On Her Majesty's Secret Service(every track),Miss Goodhead and so on.All great pieces that not only show the great talent of John Barry but also the great power of James Bond films.Cause when you hear the music, you see the scenes in front of you.
Very much a recommendation to all Bond and Barry fans although sometimes it focusses too much on title songs. The only solution is to buy all separate soundtracks.

Pretty good within the span of time allotted.......2001-11-08
On the other hand, the producers _did_ try to condense almost 20 years of music onto a single CD. Compare this to the first collection, which encapsulated about 10 years of music - obviously much more time to devote to each individual film. Ah, if only they could've done, say, a Roger Moore CD and then a Dalton/Brosnan CD. In any case, I didn't really miss "License to Kill" all that much - while it works great on film, Kamen's score here seems a bit too sparse and incidental (bordering on meandering) to really produce enjoyable standalone pieces. ("Brazil" or "Die Hard", on the other hand...)
That said, this is a rather fine collection. What's particularly interesting are the breaks from Barry's scores - the lavish string arrangements for Conti's "For Your Eyes Only" (if only they added the disco cues, but again see above comments) and Hamlisch's jet-setty "Ride to Atlantis" provide an interesting contrast from the string pads and brass fanfare that dominate the remainder of the CD. John Altman's "GoldenEye" contribution is a refreshing interpretation of the original Bond theme.
I happen to have the Rykodisc version of "The Living Daylights", so there's nothing new here for my favorite score of the Bond films. Seems also like they set the drum machine a little too fast for "Hercules Take Off"....
How shall I try to put this...........2001-07-13
One of the very first things I noticed when I got the CD: the packaging was very poor and just done very badly (like a trained monkey had put the thing together), and, in addition, the front cover of the case had a big 2-inch crack in it.
Sadly put: this CD could've been better. Lots better.
Decent, not outstanding..........2001-02-11
Perhaps Not a "Must" But Still Good.......2001-01-12
"007 Films Scores by Nic Raine & City of Prague Gang".......2000-12-14
To assist our hero are various film score composers - John Barry, Bill Conti, Marvin Hamilsch, Eric Serra and Monty Norman, all have attained immortality and classic status in film scoring. Monty Norman had done the famous James Bond Theme of sorts, but John Barry gave it the polish with a new arrangement, a guitar, different accompaniments and so forth...now recognized world wide as the most popular theme ever.
Nic Raine who was fortunate to work with composers - Elmer Bernstein, Maurice Jarre, George Fenton, Gerald Gouriet and Stanley Myers...but was passionate when he orchestrated two James Bond scores for John Barry - "A View To A Kill" and "The Living Daylights" and conducted both Silva Screen's release "THE CLASSIC JOHN BARRY" and "THE ESSENTIAL JAMES BOND" with The City of Prague Philharmonic.
This latest album "BOND BACK IN ACTION 2", with a faithful and outstanding interpretation in the form of suites which incorporate some of the best "action" cues - some material that hadn't been available before. Nic Raine adapted and changed the material where necessary for the demands of a 75-piece orchestra. This is a "must have" for "film-score-buffs" and "movie-music" collectors!
