happy music.......2006-08-29
I could't offer a technical critique of this c.d,instead I'll attempt to describe the enjoyment it gave me.Imagine you're sitting in your car listening to the radio, not terribly enthusiastic about getting out to start work. You become aware there's a bright ,cheerful sounding tune being played-vaguely familiar,I find myself tapping out the beat and humming along-what's this called then? Then we get to the part I can identify-DAH-DAHdeDAHdeDAH-DAH-DAH-Oh,of course,it's the music they used in "The Hunters",oh the memories that brought back. That tune got me out of the car ,through the day's turmoil, and when I woke up the next morning at 3a.m.,it was still going throgh my head!Okay, log onto Amazon, click, click, all I've gotta do now is contain my impatience .The C.D. duly arrived, suffice it to say it exceeded all my expectations regarding quality and content and has become one of my favourites.
Vintage march collection for connoisseurs.......2000-05-26
It seems like the heyday for recorded march collections was the early stereo era. The classic Mercury recordings by Fennell and the Eastman Wind Ensemble dating from that time no doubt contribute to that impression. In this collection, they demonstrate the seriousness with which they approach this repertoire by unearthing some lesser known (at least in the US) pieces to go along with the usual Sousa-esque fare. However, there is no sense that they scraped the bottom of the barrel: all of these marches are first rate. Even the less familiar marches will have you humming along in no time, so infectious are they. These performers bring their usual gutsy exuberance and the necessary polish, too. The sound is on the bold side so turn the volume down a bit for this one.

one of their best - and their first!.......2006-09-15
and you get the original (non air-brushed out)
penis cover too. a great disc
I still pull this LP out, that's how cool it is/was.
"back in the good 'ole days when dancing meant exploding!"
PS (not goth) just great rock from a cool band
beautiful death, screaming.......2006-03-07
it might be stupid to try and define the goth genre, but if there is such a thing this album should be first on the list. bauhaus has an incredible way of using their rock instruments to create great moments of pain and release. they have characteristically twangy guitars and sharp drums, and they know how to use it to inflict pain. however, even if it is artificial pain, they certainly managed to use their instruments in an immensely creative way to convey their deathly fantasies. peter murphy's voice gets on some people's nerves, but i think he's a really amazing vocalist with harmonized screams and hurls. and they kick ass for a rock band as well. this album is really essential for any punk/goth fan, especially if you like your music dark.
PLEASE ixnay on the othgay!!!!.......2005-09-06
When I listen to this album I hear punk, glam, electronic, avante garde: yes - goth: no. I associate the label "goth" with "dirge" and "downer" and don't think I'm alone there. I'm afraid that amazon customers who'd love this one won't check it out simply because of the percieved limitations of the label "goth." That's a shame. There's so much fun in this album, so much snotty paranoia and angst and heaps of arty-farty spasmotics. I just hope that customers can wade through all the refereces to "goth" and find out for themselves how transcendent of limitations this album is!
ABSOLUTE MUST !!!!!!.......2005-09-05
This is probably THE most corrosive after punk/goth album ever recorded. You'll feel as if a pint of nitric acid were being poured inside your ears.Everything, especially guitars,is distorted to the point of saturating madness, yet the resulting songs are clear, tight gut wrenching power punches.Bauhaus at their very best in my humble opinion, perhaps not a song by song best (hey Bela Lugosi is earlier, remember ? ) but thebest heavy goth album ever put together by a band.
uh yeah, just want to clear something up.......2005-06-02
As was stated by many others, this is a great album. Does it matter who did what first? Were the Cure and Joy Division more important? How can something like this be calculated? I mean who gives a crap who invented goth. In fact I find it kind of ironic that someone can insult Peter Murphy's singing style while singing the praises of Ian Curtis. If you want to talk about god awful vocals, there's your man. Dont get me wrong, all three are great bands, and each has something unique to offer. But it's best not to get caught up on silly little labels. Or for that matter limit your enjoyment of music, because of some sort of elitism. If this type of music doesn't light your fire, then more power to you, just don't pretend that what you choose to listen to is any better. It's about the music, the mood, variety and if it's of a high caliber then who cares if it's goth or polka?

DON'T GET THIS FROM AMAZON!!!!!.......2005-11-04
Ok people. I ordered this from Oct. 13 and NOw it's Nov. 3. I still didnt' get it. They told me it's gonna be delayed until the 14... I'm rating this only a one star not because SIR James Galway isn't a great flutist, but it's Amazon's crappy service and lack of interest.
Bounty of Flute's Best From One of Best Flutist.......2005-02-17
Being married to a flutist allows me to hear some of the greatest works written for this beautiful instrument. Here one of its greatest virtuosos records his favorites from its reportoire.
Gallway performs superb renditions of 29 of his favorites, from Albinoni and Bach to Vivaldi. Much of what he plays most are already familiar with but will enjoy his passionate interpretation even then, e.g. CPE Bach's Flute Concertos and Vivaldi's four seasons selections. The fun comes from hearing other that some might not be that familiar with: Galuppi's Flute Concerto in D or Field's Nocturne in B Flat.
These are all enhanced by Gallway's personal notes on each selection, which is truly a wonderful addition to the liner notes.
This two CD set is truly a wonderful addition to all who love the sweet and flowing tone of flute well played accompanied by excellent orchestration and other instruments. Top shelf!
A Masterpiece.......2003-02-08
I am a college student and I am majoring in music education. My primary instrument is the flute, and my goal is to attain all of the pieces that I have studied. By buying this CD with many different selections has saved me the aggravation of purchasing many different CDs. James Galway is an extremely talented man, and this collection shows off his capabilities with flare. There are selections from all of the major musical periods such as the Baroque and the Classical which makes for a wonderful variety. This CD is worth every penny.
The Master of the Flute.......2001-01-18
James Galway performs miracles on the flute. This is an exquisite CD. Flautist must own this one!! It is a wonderful resource and helpful to young musicians needing some musicality help.
lotsa flute.......2000-09-09
you really have to love flute music to have 2+ hours, I didn't realize it was ALL flute.

Regardless of who was first to coin the term "Nocturne," 19th-century Irish composer John Field's Nocturnes, 15 of which are included here, stand side by side with those of Chopin for their consummate tunefulness, harmonic ingenuity, and pure pianistic resourcefulness. Fellow Irishman John O'Conor informs each of these gems with interpretive authenticity, unpretentious refinement, and elegance. --David Vernier
Customer Reviews:
hypnotizing in its beauty.......2007-06-10
This album's simple grace and natural beauty continue to amaze me everytime I listen. It's the perfect soundtrack for so many moments too, when you want beautiful music that is accessible enough to keep people energized, but invisible enough to just be in the background pleasantly. We listen to it at dinnertime often, or in the morning, or in the setting sun.
Field's Nocturnes.......2007-03-14
If proof were needed of Irish composer John Field's place in musical history, his "Nocturnes" are it. Chopin's nocturnes are directly traceable to Field's influence, and both composers wrote their works for piano. His influence has continued. This is piano music. Listen and learn.
Composer who should be better known.......2007-01-10
These nocturnes by John Field, the originator of the form, are sadly little known. They are lovely pieces played exquisitely by John O'Conor. The sounds are like a shimmering liquid magic poured over you when the day has been chaotic and ugly . . . suddenly you're smoothed out and all is well. Anyone who likes the Chopin Nocturnes played by someone like Moravec should get this album. It's a delightful surprise and real treat.
Thank you John O'Conor.......2005-02-21
This was one of my very first CD purchases when I finally crossed over to digital in 1990 and about 1300 CDs later, it's still one of the ones I play most often. Comparisons to Chopin are unnecessary, this gorgeous music stands on its own. I was unfamiliar with Field's work when I purchased this and John O'Conor can be credited with a mini renaissance of John Field - there are now numerous Field works available in the catalog.
In my view, Field's Nocturnes are still not as popular as they should be - they may not be as musically complex as the more famous Romantic piano composers, but they are always beautiful. I can't imagine a more sympathetic performance than that given by Mr. O'Conor. I've been playing this CD regularly for 15 years and I really have no desire to hear any other performance of this beautiful music.
The CD cover effectively captures the mood these pieces evoke. The music is consistently gentle and tranquil but never even remotely dull. This would be an excellent purchase for someone just starting to explore classical music (stay away from those dreadful compilations!). In fact, this would be a great purchase for people who profess not to like classical music. It's difficult for me to believe that there's anybody who wouldn't find moments when this CD would create just the mood they were looking for. Even headbangers need some reflective time.
Perfect!.......2003-03-20
This disc is absolutely wonderful. Every piece is composed with luxurious beauty, delicacy, and sensuousness. The inevitable comparison to the Nocturnes of Chopin do not even slightly dim the luster of these exquisite little gems, most under five minutes in length. They are certainly not as perfectly crafted as Chopin's, but they can stand on their own as delightful listening music, sublime in simplicity and flowing lyricism. John O'Conor performs flawlessly; it is obvious that he takes great pleasure in allowing the piano to sing to us.

O'Conor is the original piano poet.......2007-07-19
John O'Conor cannot be faulted in this recording of John Field. He manages to give it that Chopin-nocturne-feel but show the originality and musicality required when approaching John Field's music. An excellent recording with technical brilliance and poetic musicality.
another excellent Field performance by O'Conor.......2003-07-18
John O'Conor is a gifted Irish pianist. This disc is a beautifully recorded performance of Field's piano sonatas on a Hamburg Steinway Piano. O'Conor's recording of Field's Nocturnes (also on Telarc) have been highly praised. This disc makes and excellent companion to that recording and includes the three Nocturnes which they were unable to fit on the other disc. Highly recommended.

A Musical Treasure from an Under-appreciated Master.......2007-01-20
For many years, John Field, the Irish composer of wonderful piano music, was unjustifiably neglected by musicians and critics alike. If considered at all, Field, who came between Beethoven and Chopin, was considered at best a transition figure, or at worst a musical curiosity. Nothing could be further from the truth. Field's music is nothing short of a revelation. It is lyrical yet complex, the work of a master musician who could stand with the best of the writers for the piano. Fortunately Field's music is now beginning to be heard more often on classical radio and is more available on recordings. And this one, especially of his Second Piano Concerto, is excellent. Micael O'Rourke and the London Mozart Players, led by Matthias Bamert, do it, and Field, full justice. The music simply sings. For fans of classical piano, if you haven't yet discovered the piano music of John Field, you are in for a treat. This CD should be in anyone's classical collection.
Love This Recording!.......2006-12-03
I heard this recording on our classical radio station. Had to listen to it on Amazon.com. For all of you Mozart fans, for all of you romantic music classical fans, this is it. I love all of John Field's piano concertos. This recording is superb! The pianist is wonderful and the orchestra is great. Buy it for all your clasical music-loving friends. They will thank you for it.
Oh my Goodness!.......2001-01-10
"Oh my Goodness" is what you'll say when you hear Field's Concerto Number 2 in Abmajor. Then you'll say: "this is the most beautiful thing I've ever heard in my life." And, for the next 3 months or so, you'll need to listen to it at least once a day; putting aside (and perhaps trashing) your albums containing the works of the 12-tone masters, you will wonder why they ever headed in such directions. Through his concertos, John Field displays his gifts in creating beautiful and expressive music which is always natural, never forced or manipulative, but is certainly very emotional. However, the emotion in his work is very subtle, without rage or anger. In fact, there are several instances in the 2nd concerto where other composers might have burst out with a tutti from the orchestra or crashing 8-voice chords from the piano; Field finds other directions which are gentle and poetic, but, at the same time, never leave you feeling empty. The first concerto is great too (just, not as great as the second).
Miceal O'Rourke and the London Players understand Field's language very well. O'Rourke has a nice touch and never just "presses the right buttons" - there is great depth and sensitivity in his playing (and apparently his Chopin playing is fantastic...according to the inside sleeve of the C.D. anyway). It sounds like he plays on quite an expensive piano too and the quality of the recording is excellent. I haven't heard these pieces played by anyone else, but I'm extremely happy with this recording (in fact, I also bought the other 5 concertos as recorded by the same artists).

Gorgeous! .......2006-02-18
I highly recommend this recording! I heard Field's work for the first time not long ago and wanted to get my own recording. I had to pay a pretty penny for this collection (via Marketplace) but it was worth every cent!
What a great composer and what a great job Micael O'Rourke has done, as well!
One of my favorites.......2005-12-17
Chopin made the nocturne famous, but Field invented the form. Field's nocturnes, composed between 1812 and 1832, are rather less intense and less complex than Chopin's, but perfectly lovely, and beautifully performed here by pianist O'Rourke. When I feel too frazzled for almost anything but silence, these pieces soothe and solace.
Delectable!.......2000-07-16
John Field is probably one of the most under-rated composers . Most classical music afficianados swoon over Chopin's nocturnes (justifiably so) , but I am surprised by the number of people who have never even heard of Field !Unlike Chopin , John Field does not wear his heart on his sleeve in these nocturnes , but to my mind they are far more superior .They are delicate & delectable without being maudlin (unlike Chopin)...listening to these nocturnes at night is like watching snowflakes fall on an arctic lake in the comfort of a heated cabin !If you like Chopin's nocturnes , you'll love these hidden gems !

Is it Mozart? Is it Chopin? No, it's a hybrid: John Field.......2006-01-25
A lyrical rendition of Field's 2nd and 3rd concertos. The middle movements of both, gorgeous nocturnes that are as good as any Chopin wrote later, are perfection, while the last movement of the 2nd is absolutely marvelous. O'Connor is dazzling throughout.
John Field is a fresh delight, a composer whose works should be played a lot more often than they are.
And, please, would someone tell me where I can get my hands on the scores of the piano concertos outside of the expensive Britannica Musica Volume 17?
Beautiful, lyrical, if somewhat shallow concertos.......2001-02-01
John Field was a pupil of Muzio Clementi and a precursor to Chopin's style of piano playing (Chopin modelled his nocturnes on those by Field). In his concertos, Field combines virtuosity with incredible lyricism. While Beethoven was writing concertos that could very well be called symphonies with piano obbligato (in fact, that is precisely what ETA Hoffman called the concertos of Beethoven and Mozart), Field was striking out in an entirely different direction. More a poet than anything else, Field's concertos sound almost improvisational, with the composer going wherever the piano seems to take him. At the same time however, Field's concertos are a little devoid of depth, with an rather uninventive left hand acompaniment for the right hand's exciting runs.In addition, the orchestra has a rather small role when compared with the piano's complete dominance of the piece. Either way, these two concertos are a joy to listen to, with wonderful performance by both John O'Connor and Mackerras and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra.

Nice!.......2000-07-03
A natural regression for any lover of Chopin would seem to be to the music of John Field - specifically the nocturnes. However, this is no downward step. Field's nocturnes may seem a little simple in comparison with Chopin's, but on the first hearing this music gently pulls you away into wonderful landscapes and emotions. It would be natural to assume that in his later years John Field may have felt left behind, overshadowed by the success of Chopin, Mendelssohn, List, Schubert etc. - listening to his nocturnes, there is no hint of any such sentiment. In fact, Field's music very often reaches perfection, saying all it needs to say, with apparent simplicity; a guise which belies delicate subtleties, allowed only to penetrate one's soul through secret levels of consciousness known only to the composer himself.
Essentially, this is pure nocturne format: beautiful right-hand melodies over left-hand figuration. The harmony is classical, yet retains an originality leaving the music still fresh after around 200 years. While some of the nocturnes give insight into where a few of Chopin's ideas may have budded, Field's works are as Fieldesque as Chopin's are Chopinesque. But, equally, it requires a real talent to sing the melodies which often burst out in a flowering reminiscent of the "bel canto" style in the great Italian operas of the time. Pietro Spada displays a real gift in both technique and musicality, allowing Field's ideas to spring forth and invite us to meditate upon their charming wisdom. Each note is crisp and his expression is tasteful, retaining that apathetic air so present in all of Field's compositions - it's music that exists because it must exist, somehow more a part of nature or the cosmos than of humanity. Essentially, I believe Spada aimed to allow us to forget the player, the composer, and simply experience the music itself - unless this was Field's original aim and it just comes through the playing. Either way, this is simply fantastic music presented extremely well by Pietro Spada. Not all the nocturnes are on this volume though: others appear on the volume after this one along with several other compositions. However, all of Field's music is worth spending time with, though I would recommend starting with this one.
