This new version of the Fiddler on the Roof soundtrack coincides with the movie's 30th anniversary (which is also celebrated by a special edition DVD). The CD is notable for several instrumental tracks by John Williams, as well as for "Any Day Now," a previously unreleased song performed by Perchik/Paul Michael Glaser (better known for his starring role in TV's Starsky and Hutch). The soundtrack is often compared unfavorably with the original 1964 cast album, in which Zero Mostel played the part of Tevye (here performed by Topol, who had been in the 1967 London production). But this CD has a lot going for it, including glossy remastering and, of course, Isaac Stern as the fiddler. In the end, whatever version you decide to pick up, Fiddler remains one of the most enduring musicals of all time. --Elisabeth VincentelliCustomer Reviews:

This soundtrack to the movie features an astonishing array of blues artists from three generations. Recorded during one long night at NYC's Radio City Music Hall on Feb. 7, 2003, the electricity is in the air and on stage. While it may not have been the finest blues show in history, the collection of founding fathers such as David "Honeyboy" Edwards, Buddy Guy, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, Larry Johnson, Hubert Sumlin, Solomon Burke, and the ubiquitous B.B. King along with their spiritual offspring (Gregg Allman, John Fogerty, and Steven Tyler) and some usual suspects like Bonnie Raitt, Robert Cray, and Keb' Mo', makes it arguably the most significant blues session ever captured on film.Beginning acoustic, the double disc builds momentum and volume as we hear the blues mutate to electric and finally hip-hop with Chuck D. exploding on a rap version of John Lee Hooker's "Boom Boom." The crackling house band led by drummer Steve Jordan provides foundation for gritty, roof-raising pieces like the unusual collaboration between former New York Doll David Johansen and guitarist Sumlin on Howlin' Wolf's "Killing Floor." Not all of the film's music is included but there are enough magnificent performances for established blues fans and to entice those first experiencing the genre's abundant riches. --Hal Horowitz

Milkshake, the duo of Lisa Mathews and Mikel Gehl (alums of the pop/rock act Love Riot), pours heart and soul into Bottle of Sunshine, and kids ages one to six will slurp it up the same way they did Happy Songs, Milkshake's harmony-thick debut. Mathews's pleasant voice (reminiscent of Cowboy Junkies's Margo Timmons' in its sleepy, drifty, peacefulness), and a light acoustic touch earns this act a spot in the cool kids' musicians category. Parents will love Sunshine for its pared-down folk/rock sound, and kids will appreciate a lack of shyness when it comes to getting silly. For parents, some children's records make the drone of a blender seem a preferable listening experience. In the span of two super-smooth discs, Milkshake manages to reverse all that. --Tammy La GorceAlbum Description
Well, true to the phrase "Good things take time," two years after the release of our 2002 debut CD Happy Songs, we present Bottle Of Sunshine. The disc offers fifteen brand new Milkshake originals the whole family can groove to. You'll also find lots of variety here, although most of the songs still live in the rock genre. We recorded "ABC Of Me" live in the studio with a jazz combo. It's a new take on the Alphabet Song, and each letter stands for some quality or thing that reminds us of how great we are, and how wonderful childhood is. "Boom Boom" turned into a country rock song as we added fiddle and banjo and a "yee-haa". There's a doo-wop tinged song about having fun in the water called "Woo-Woo." There are some totally acoustic songs ("Bluebird" and "Milkshake!") and some very electrified, all-out rock songs ("School" and "Space Song"). But every song is memorable. And each one was great fun to record.British children's author/illustrator Alexis Deacon created the cover art for Bottle of Sunshine, along with illustrations for the 16-page booklet accompanying the CD. Please look for his wonderful children's books "Slow Loris" and "Beegu," both published by Kane Publishers, NY.
Bottle of Sunshine also contains a bonus: three Milkshake music videos of songs from Happy Songs. Two of these, "Fingers & Toes" and "Tall", are fully animated. The third, "Happy Song", is a live action video with some animation sprinkled here and there.

Album Description
"Scenesters Pepe & The Bottle Blondes are launching a new album...a spicy mix of Latin, classical, techno and flamenco songs, including a calypso tune about an alien who crash-lands on earth and asks Pepe for help." - WILLAMETTE WEEK"If you've never seen Pepe & The Bottle Blondes, then you are missing one of the truly best live acts in all of Oregon. This twelve-piece Latin/swing band will have you swaying to their repertoire of tangos, boleros, rumbas, sambas, salsa and many other exciting dance forms." - BEST OF OREGON MUSIC FESTIVAL
Pepe & The Bottle Blondes was created in February 1997 to bring back the "Copacabana" style dinner theater enhanced with the percussion and beat of Latin rhythms. An eclectic ensemble of saxophones, congas, percussion, trumpets and three-part harmonies combine talent and visually arresting performances that echo the indulgence of the 1950s nightclub chic.
Pepe Raphael's piquant pulsations have taken him from Madrid (where he was born) to New York to Portland (where he now lives). Raphael has performed leading roles with Music Theatre of Oregon, the Musical Theatre Company and the Portland Opera. He successfully blends dance, opera and musical theatre with his original songwriting and comedic wit to deliver a fresh and innovative performance.
Nouveau Latin and swing with a humorous twist, Pambrosia is beautifully produced and totally made for dancing. In a time when music is trying to define life, Pepe & The Bottle Blondes want you to get up and shake your booty with songs sung in a variety of languages including French, Spanish, Russian, Caló (Gypsy Spanish) and English.

Is it as good as the first one?.......2006-10-29
"Latenight Betty" has been an enormous success, and everybody who listened to one or two songs immediately wanted the whole thing. I long waited for a second album and bought it with no delay the minute I saw it was out.
The first song "Outta This World" does hold up with the reputation, being unique, catchy and even funny, but then something happens. You expect to "stay up" but you get mostly empty handed. There are a few pretty nice songs that give you that old flare and grace; "On & On", "Donde Estabas Tu", "Sere serenito", but the others are mostly "okay". I swear one or two sounded like a hotel band.
Talent is not something that "Pepe & the Bottle Blondes" lack. I would definitely be interested in a third album, but I will listen to it before buying next time.

Great but not stellar.......2006-09-25
The first cut BOMBS as a list song about an ET. I don't know what is wrong with the first half of the cd but it just beats on and on with little distinction or variety. Most of the cd is over until Donde estabas tu, which is sublime and reminds you what P&TBB can really do. His female backup singers are EXCELLENT.
Everything is fine until the ending when for some reason they decide to take a jewel from the first cd and run it through the remix hades of commericalism. Were they looking for a radio hit? I don't know.
Something that has never been clear to me is the split Pepe made with Pink Martini after Pinks' first cd. I was so disappointed when Tomato came out and there was no Pepe, my god, were they nuts? In my opinion, he was the best thing, vocally, they had going for them other than their classical approach to arrangement. Ms. China is all well and good and serves Pink very well.
Thankfully I discovered Pepe and the Bottle Blondes and discovered where the heart and fun of Pink disappeared to. I think both bands are wonderful for entirely different reasons.
Pepe seems to be the personification of Puck and he seems more than generous in sharing the lime light with his band and back up singers. He's got the soul, the beat and pelvic thrust in his music. My only hope is that he keeps producing music. (ok, maybe 3.5 stars)

A tough follow up from their first great album Late night Betty. Nicely accomplished. Every track on the CD comes through sounding great, not one song feels neglected. The rhythm, the horns and vocals are awesome Pepe and his entire entourage sound great. I love this CD! Can't wait for the next one.

Imagine for a moment that the survivors of the Lynyrd Skynyrd plane crash in 1977 had decided to keep going and had replaced Ronnie Van Zant and Steve Gaines with the Clash's Joe Strummer and Mick Jones. The reborn band would have had it all: redneck country-rock with in-your-face class consciousness and cockney punk-rock with swing and guitar chops. It would have sounded a lot like the BottleRockets on their second album, The Brooklyn Side. When the BottleRockets' chief singer-songwriter Brian Henneman wants to sing about the American class structure, what does he do? He tells jokes about buying a "1000 Dollar Car." "A thousand-dollar car ain't gonna roll," he sings over grinding, Neil Youngish guitar chords, "till you put at least another thousand in the hole/Sink your money in and there you are:/The owner of a two-thousand-dollar thousand-dollar car." --Geoffrey HimesCustomer Reviews:

Kevin Costner, Robin Wright Penn, and Paul Newman star in this romantic tale about a sailor who dispatches love letters to sea in memory of his late wife. Just as the love letters are viewed as among the most touching ever written, the soundtrack is equally sentimental--16 tracks that evoke wistful days spent staring out of windows pining for lost love. Edwin McCain delivers Diane Warren's surprisingly modest "I Could Not Ask for More," a song written specifically for the movie. Sheryl Crow and Sarah McLachlan turn soft and spooky with their whispery "Carolina" and "I Love You," respectively. Sinéad Lohan and Beth Nielsen Chapman backlight their middle-of-the-road sensibilities with dance beats. Hootie & the Blowfish's "Only Lonely" is far closer to country music (Glen Campbell-style) than country artist Faith Hill's "Let Me Let Go." Gabriel Yared contributes the instrumental title track as well as two other pieces of overswelling movie music. Redefines the term mellow. --Rob O'ConnorCustomer Reviews:
BEWARE ONE IMPORTANT SONG MISSING - WARNING SPOILER!.......2007-03-01
It seems I am forever tracking down an errant song. Oftentimes the song is a critical heartbeat moment of the film - as in this case. Why such an important song is missing confounds me.
If you are considering this cd because you want THAT CRITICAL SONG played during the montage showing Theresa and Garret finding their lives hopeful after years of despair and loneliness, you won't find it on either of the Message in a Bottle cds. You need to add to your cart the soundtrack for the movie, Where the Heart is. That beautiful song also played at the very end of that movie AND THOSE FOLKS had the sense to put it ON THEIR SOUNDTRACK! I have not found it on any of EmmyLou Harris' or Patty Griffin's cds. Maybe it was a licensing thing, I don't know... I don't really care. Just figured I would offer a heads up and a helpful hint!

Oh, What Could Have Been... .......2005-12-21
Well, I can now say that such a criticism was clearly over the top, though I could understand his frustration to an extent. My biggest bitch about this whole effort is that, much unlike FFBB (or any Peacemakers effort), it didn't seem like they had fun making this one, and if they did, they certainly failed to sell me on that. I can just about hear a record company suit breathing down their necks throughout the whole thing. On "Tributary Otis," which for better or worse opens this CD, I imagine someone in the control room asking "Uh, could you make it sound more 'Gin Blossoms-y?'" Listen to that track, and follow it up with "Follow You Down" from GB's "Congratulations I'm Sorry," and there you have it.
Lyrically (a very strong point of FFBB), the highs are high, and the lows low. I find it pretty much laughable to hear a band quote lyrics from their first CD on their second, but they did it on "Fonder & Blonder" - see "Down Together" from FFBB. It makes me think they'd run out of ideas rather quickly.
I find the strong tracks as good as anything RC has put out there (IMHO: "Wanted," "Heaven or the Highway," "Preacher's Daughter," "Broken Record"), and the weaker ones not so much "bad" as, well, completely non-offensive yet equally forgettable music.
Taken out of its context, I believe TB&FH to be a good (though well short of great) collection of fun, rollicking tunes. However, as a follow-up to FFBB, which has held "Desert Island Disc" status to me since its first spin, it's a textbook sophomore letdown.
Thankfully, Roger rocks on with the Peacemakers. I commend their entire catalog to your listening.
Even better than the first.......2005-10-22
Its sound is noticeably more refined and smoother than the band's first album, but all the good qualities of that album--the fun, the mariachi instrumentation, the high quality lyrics--are all still here, though this album is certainly sadder and more thoughtful.
Like "Fizzy Fuzzy Big & Buzzy," this is a great CD for any road trip through western desert, and it contains great pop/rock songs that certain of us 1990s music-o-philes will have stuck in our heads until we're dead.
I consider both of this band's albums essential for any good modern rock collection, and wish they were still around to make some more. They were getting better with every album, and it's a bummer they're off all doing their own things now--though I hear Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers (the lead vocalist's current band) are pretty good too.
