Amazon.com essential recording

Sometimes it seems as if there's every other band in America, and then there's the Flaming Lips. The Norman, Oklahoma, quartet makes modern rock that doesn't sound like anyone else; head music, they'd have called it in psychedelia's heyday, weird soundscapes that conjure the bizarre alternate universe on the other side of the funhouse mirror. Transmissions, their second major-label release after a long indie apprenticeship has a mellower feel than early fans might expect, with lots of acoustic guitar and dreamy interludes to shame More-era Pink Floyd, but it's no less weird than their last two efforts. Strange sounds float in and out of the mix, and Wayne Coyne's twisted hick vocals are convincingly demented. Coyne's lyrics tend toward a Dadaist stream of consciousness with occasional forays into junk culture; this is familiar modern rock territory, but songs such as "She Don't Use Jelly," "Chewin the Apple of Your Eye," and "Be My Head" are more effective and less annoying than the would-be gonzo efforts of Frank Black and Sonic Youth because they're catchier and less pretentious. The Flaming Lips may be transmitting to the satellites, but when all is said and done, they live in Oklahoma. --Jim DeRogatis

4 out of 5 stars Not as recognized as later works, but still great (4.5).......2007-07-06

Sometimes a band's better work can still be overshadowed by others. It seems that the public and the press tend to value The Soft Bulletin and Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots much more, and as great as those are, I feel that this is about on par with them. It is not quite as soundscape-ish and not as conceptual, but just as good. The record actually kind of reminds me of what Jane's Addiction would be like if they were a dream pop band.

The most famous of the 11 songs is easily "She Don't Use Jelly." That one's quite clever, and while it got them known as one hit wonders it doesn't mean the rest of the songs aren't catchy, or even good. I really love "Be My Head" with its effortless pop melodies and the flop follow-up "Turn It On" is a great track as well. The songs still have a psychedelic feel and I think that if you like the later Lips works that you'll like this. It's a noisy pop record on the whole, but then there's more gentle tracks like "Chewin' the Apple of Your Head" as well.

I recommend this to fans of the later work or good alternative music in general. Speaking of which, in spite being released in the "grunge" era this was actually kind of the antidote, with songs that aren't really dark at all and have a somewhat lighthearted feel. I think you too will find enjoyment here.

4 out of 5 stars Flaming Lips transitioning from Punk to, well, Flaming Lips.......2007-05-06

This is a great album for those of us who "discovered" TFL during the Yoshimi or At War period. This one really betrays their punk roots, but with glimmers of the band they are today. Pretty cool.

5 out of 5 stars Transmissions from the Satellite Heart.......2007-01-24

A sound that's far less polished then more recent works, but well worth a listen nonetheless.

5 out of 5 stars one of the most significant releases of the 90s (really!!!).......2006-07-24

in coming up with a value judgement on this record i have tried to steer clear of comparisons to any of the lips' other output, and view it in a sort of cultural freeze frame taking into consideration things like the grunge rock i still can't get enough of, the popular television programming and the overall atmosphere of the clinton 90s. what i came up with was that this record, probably more than any other, embodies the overwhelming sense of relief and newfound optimism that happened with the new administration and the "end" of the cold war. i may have said in other reviews that the clinton 90s are a time more distant from us at the present than even the cold war 70s and 80s...it was a wonderful era where a man was free to stick a needle in his arm and sing a jobim bossa nova over guitar feedback if he so chose and not worry about a draft or nuclear threats, etc. Wayne and company have the same ethic as the above-mentioned band and on this record they created something which i consider to be locked in a tie for the best radio-type song representative of the clinton era: she don't use jelly, of course, with the other standout (in my mind, at least) being interstate love song. the entire album features the crisp sound and elastic bass and guitar fuzztones which made the single famous, and it stands in sharp contrast to the flood of grunge releases from those couple of years because of the sonic clarity and cheerful vibe, and, to my ears (even as a dyed-in-the-wool, flannel-wearing ed vedder fanboy), it pretty much trumps all of them in terms of pure inspiration and consistency. now, to be fair, the lips are not my favorite band, nor is stp (that honor i reserve for crusty old mark lanegan and the screaming trees on sst). this is not my favorite lips album either (that would be yoshimi)...she don't use jelly is not even my favorite song on the record (i like chewin the apple of your eye for its unique chord progression and sparse acoustic guitar work...it is the only real break from the veritable deluge of fuzz); all i am saying is that this album is an extremely significant expression of the time period in which it was recorded and as such it has monumental value which is pretty much undeniable regardless of one's personal preferences.

5 out of 5 stars The second Flaming Lips masterpiece.......2006-04-27

I dont understand how one reviewer said this record is weak musically, Ronald Jones and Steven Drozd are very talented musicians. Not to mention Wayne Coyne's songwriting. "Moth in the Incubator" among others are classics. Production is perfect, the drum sound is loud and fat.

5 out of 5 stars simple roads to pleasure.......2007-07-09

If a live album can offer at least ten or twelve awesome moments, then I am apt to offer it a five star rating. This one delivers. The band truly comes to life in a live concert setting. They deliver masterful versions of songs about love, life, nature; and sort of earthy, philosophical takes on thousands of other nuances of living. They remind me so much of the Dead, who came on so innocuously before setting the hook and pulling you delightfully into their richly detailed realms.

Catch em on the current tour if you're lucky!

4 out of 5 stars Transmissions from the Sea of Tranquility [LIVE] .......2006-02-20

Samples fans this is either in your collection or it should be. From what I have read the Samples are a band to see live this double disk supports that conclusion. The samples where one of the first bands I remember listening to in middle school a friend of mine had a copy of what I want to say was the self titled album. Over a decade later I found a copy of my sisters and since then they have been a staple of mine. A particular favorite to listen to when driving through the country and a particular favorite of my black labradours'.

I am always suspect of live albums as a lot can be lost with less than perfect recording quality. There is something lost with with the live recording but the energy that the band gives to their fans makes up the difference.

The ablum includes many of the songs I like from a whole array of albums and even a cover of the John Lennon song Watching the Wheels, Conquistador, Buffalos and windmills and Sacred Stones.

This band is timeless, I acctually find it gets better with each listen and new perspective. I don't believe I would buy this album first but should you already like the Samples or just dig live music pick this up its more than worth the money.

4 out of 5 stars Great.......2004-08-18

I love the versions of "Giants" "Still Water" "The Last Drag" "Streets in the Rain" and "Information". Not as good as actually going to one of their shows but still worth the price of admission. Some of the acoustic versions are a little weak for my taste ("Summertime") but still a great 2 CD set. Kenny James drumming is awesome -

5 out of 5 stars Remains one of the Best from one of music's Best!.......2004-03-04

The Sample's "Transmissions from the Sea of Tranquility" is a live album from The Samples released in 1997. As an avid Samples fan, this CD remains one of my favorite albums by the band. As the liner notes indicate, the album was recorded during a period of band member transitions, and there was some doubt as to whether the band would remain together. Thankfully, Sean Kelly and company have remained together to this day and continue to produce some of the best and most overlooked rock music.

The bulk of the material in this double CD is live material found on their earlier studio releases, including their self-titled debut, No Room, The Last Drag, and Autopilot. There are also a few studios songs sprinkled in, including a cover of John Lennon's "Watching the Wheels". What I enjoy most about this Samples album is the stripped-down nature of the songs; most are acoustic and a bit of a departure from their earlier works. There are a couple of weak songs, notably "Prehistoric Bird" and a remake of an early Samples song, "African Ivory". However, there are some great gems that appear on later albums, such as "Indiana" and "Losing End of Distance"

In my humble opinion, The Samples continue to be the best, if least known band in music today. While Sean Kelly's voice may not be spectacular, his song writing is superb and the musical instrumentation is terrific. The lyrics often tell wonderful stories and vignettes of love, life, and loss. I've been to dozens of Samples concerts since first seeing them in 1992, and I've rarely been disappointed. If you are either a longtime Samples fan or just discovering their music, I highly recommend this album.

5 out of 5 stars Best CD you can own.......2003-06-10

The Samples have always been a favorite of mine. The Samples good energy combined with creative lyrics make them a band i will keep listening to over and over. This CD (2 Discs, actually) is one that you will keep in your CD player for a long time, and keep listening to it.

By far the best Samples CD, do yourself a favor and buy this.

5 out of 5 stars Same band, different concept.......2006-02-28

This album is so far away conceptually from the rest of Juno Reactor's work that it really needs to be considered as a separate entity. People say it sounds dated by comparison to the later material, but I think it mostly sounds different because it was going for a different effect.

Later Juno Reactor discs have either focused on high-energy dance music (Beyond the Infinite) or combining that high energy with multicultural samples to create a kind of wordbeat/trance sound (Bible of Dreams, Shango, Labyrinth). Transmissions, however, sets out to take you on a more purely electronic, space-oriented trip. As such, it's a little slower, a little more abstract and atmospheric, and takes its time to develop a distinct mood of cosmic vastness, emptiness, and alien landscapes. It's frequently danceable, but also a smooth and very cohesive listening experience from beginning to end. There's no dense jungle percussion assault like "Conga Fury" here, but the whole thing takes its cues from the opening track "High Energy Protons" and develops the mood from there.

Me, I like the spacey techno atmosphere and think this disc is a great stand-alone success. I was first turned on to Juno Reactor by Bible of Dreams (another great disc), but I listen to this one just as much. The two albums are must-haves, but the musical terrain they explore is so vastly different that they might as well have been recorded by different artists. If you try not to compare this to later Juno Reactor, the disc will pleasantly surprise you.

5 out of 5 stars One of JR's best........2005-04-04

I suppose I'm different from the rest of the reviewers here who seemingly rate this low. I didn't come into JR around the Bible of Dreams or Shango eras. I came in just as Beyond The Infinite was released and promptly picked up Transmissions the next day. So I was listening to both of the albums at the same time.

I don't find this album dated in the least. I think it just comes down to what you like. I don't like recent JR albums nearly as much as the original 2, but others who like the recent albums will probably not like the older ones. JR has changed styles so immensely that old and new fans are hearing different things.

I love Transmissions. It has a very specific spacey feel to it, thus the name. The NASA samples are extremely fitting. I find it flows better than just about any other JR album.

Besides, it also has one of my favorite JR songs of all time, Landing. The Stephen Hawking quote is amazing and the song is the ultimate finisher, better than any other JR album. Landing makes me wish JR would throw out an ambient album at some time.

So for recent JR fans, keep in mind that this album wasn't made for you. Obviously JR has changed, but this album is far from dated. You certainly can't be a "die-hard" fan and ignore this album.

Cheers!

5 out of 5 stars Trance at its very best.......2005-03-11

I listened to this album at a used music store back in '97. I had never heard of Juno Reactor before. The music took me to a place that I have real difficulty describing - another plane of existence that I know I've visited before. The soundscapes are masterfully engineered, rich and original. Each track is a gem. This album tops any of their subsequent releases.

3 out of 5 stars For it's time it was good..........2004-11-18

I bought this CD, having known Juno since Bible of Dreams and Shango. Then, after buying Labyrinth, I went to this. What's in the past, should be left in the past. It's a good start for Juno's career, but I'm glad to see them come so far now.

If you're expecting more of excellent Juno, think again. These are good trance songs, but they aren't engineered as well here. The engineering quality reminds me of how Orbital first started out and mastered their art over time.

The music reminds me alot of CoEx: Synaethesia. It has some odd voice-recordings that sound extremely archaic, but, of course, they fit the songs.

They also tried to follow a theme about space, and pull it off somewhat half-heartedly. Another band, Delerium, enjoyed creating themes in their albums, and this is akin to Spheres II.

This CD isn't as good as everyone's saying it is. If you're a die-hard Juno fan (like me), you won't miss this album, trust me.

5 out of 5 stars Blood Pumping Music !..........2003-04-08

A friend of mine was digging through his CD collection a couple of years ago (said he had two cd's of the same album and wanted me to have the extra copy) and handing me JUNO REACTOR: TRANSMISSIONS and I have been listening to it every since! It keeps my blood pumping. Silly comment, of course, but you know we need good music to keep us going. I like this artist and the music sounds very good when played on high quality Dolby Digital equipment (even on Dolby Pro Logic sound the music sounds so brilliant). The message editor here said I could describe it in a maximum of 1,000 words but I feel like I have said enough. I was allowed to give it a maximum of 5 stars but it really deserves TEN stars !...

5 out of 5 stars A decent recording of a unique and inspired performance.......2007-02-26

Having read that Joy Division put on quite an inspired performance at the 3-day Leigh Rock Festival in August of 1979, despite the terrible sound system, location and turnout, I was thrilled when Interstate Records released a limited edition 2-disc set with live recordings of four bands from the festival, including a performance by Joy Division.

I was deeply disappointed by the sound quality of the set, however, particularly during "Transmission" when the sound is almost non existent. The limited 2-disc set is great if you want to hear all four bands on the recording, but if you just want the Joy Division show, purchase "Further Transmissions"! This 14-track CD on Independent Music has just eight of the 11 songs Joy Division performed at the Leigh Festival, and unfortunately not "Transmission", but as a bonus it includes six songs from the fantastic and HTF Lyceum show that took place on February 29, 1980 in London. The Lyceum show appears in full on the "No Ceremonies" CD, but in a very scarce edition of only 500 copies! The partial sets of these two rare shows combined make for an intimate and powerful sounding CD.

Let me be clear, however, this is not a nice clean soundboard recording. First of all, their performance deliberately opens with some thick and grating sound, noise or delayed effect, like a writhing metallic worm, coming through the PA, and it's not a mistake. I believe that is Joy Division's sense of humor. It is an above average audience recording that I would rate about 7.5/10 for sound quality, but with a low end boost from the stereo. But, Joy Division performs with a raw fury and just being able to hear them playing live, ripping out these timeless tracks from 28 years ago makes this disc worthwhile.

It's not the only recording of the Leigh Festival around, but it is readily available so you don't have to search around and drop a small fortune for a different version that might have lesser sound quality. And they are out there. If you are looking for a fantastic sounding Joy Division show first pick up, "Still", then move on to, "Les Bains Douches" or The Warehouse show in Preston, which was actually the night before the Lyceum show on FT, known as "Preston 28 February 1980". If you have those recordings and still want more, "Further Transmissions" holds some intense and seemingly personal performances that will make a great addition, at about half the cost of most other good live shows. Also search out, "An Evening With..." on X Records recorded January 11, 1980 at the Paradiso Club in Amsterdam.

I have a decent collection of nearly 20 live and other bootleg recordings of Joy Division, but I am no expert. [...]for a lot more information on this and many other live recordings. Enjoy the shows! A+

4 out of 5 stars More Music, Less Talk.......2005-02-05

I love MoAM. They're by far my favorite surf band and listening to them live is a treat. But on this album, while the music is unbelievably good, the back and forth between the band members is horrible.

You can't hear them talk and when you can, they're talking over each other. This is a case where less is more. The bit about dogs and cats being able to hear them sing would be funny if it didn't take three tries to get it out.

Still, awesome music if you can put up with some less-than-witty banter.

5 out of 5 stars The closest you get to a real MoAM? show.......2000-11-14

Man or Astro-Man? are incredible live performers, and you realize it listening to this album. The goofy enthusiasm of Coco and the pure surf power of Starcrunch's ultra-reverbed guitar are what made this band great. The *real* MoAM? can be heard on Cowboy Playing Bomboro -- Starcrunch plays so tight and so fast, my jaw hit the floor the first time I heard this track. Birdstuff is a punk-rock freak of nature as usual on the drums, and Coco's bass comes through better on this album than in most others.

Live Transmissions from Uranus is a must-have for any fan of modern surf rock, and the best document of MoAM? before they lost Brian Causey.

    Album Description

Tiny Idols Vol. 2 is the second volume in a series of compilations devoted to the best obscure and out-of-print tracks from the nineties indie rock scene. Loosely modeled on Lenny Kaye's groundbreaking Nuggets series, Tiny Idols Vol. 2 comes with a fourteen-page booklet of liner notes and trivia regarding this fertile period in independent music. Several more installments in the series are planned over the next couple of years!

I never thought I'd find this stuff, and yet here it is in all it's glory. The local scenes and long out of print gems are all very well represented here. To be honest, I found this great CD looking for the artists on the first and final track, LMP and Teach Me Tiger, and was really, really pleasantly suprised to find that the rest of the CD was absolutely spectacular. You'll probably never find these songs on their own, so get 'em while you can.

5 out of 5 stars Hello Alien Metal!!.......2005-06-25

Hanzel Und Gretyl are a very unique band. Just pop it in your cd player and get ready to blast into space. Battlling aliens and doing variations on other plannets. Its just so much fun to listen to. I never heard any of their other albums. But i doubt they can hold the tourch to this one.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite band at the moment.......2004-10-21

I recently had the immense pleasure of seeing HuG perform live a couple of weeks ago. I have not been a fan of HuG for too long, about a year. I was first exposed to HuG courtesy of a good friend of mine who put a couple of HuG songs on some cds she burned for me. My first full-length HuG cd I acquired was 2003's "Uber Alles". I bought their new album "Scheissmessiah" at the band's show w/My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult and Ministry which obviously I haven't been able to stop listening to. Hanzel und Gretyl is definitely my favorite band at the moment. Their music is a good mix of industrial and metal with a splattering of techno (especially drum & bass) thrown in for good measure. THis is truly a more diversified album than the band's current album and "Uber Alles" (both albums I adore to pieces). Much to my immense surprise (and pleasure) I found a copy of the band's rare 1997 album "Transmission From Uranus" in my mailbox today from my same friend who exposed me to HuG to begin with :). After been exposed to "Uber Alles" and "Scheissmessiah", "Transmission From Mars" is definitely different from those two albums. Vas Kallas's ferocious vocals are still ferocious but the music itself is quite different and interesting to listen to. Two of my favorite songs on the album is the last two tracks "Asteronafti" and " Om Zentrale Station". Those two songs have a completely different sound than what I am used to hearing which isn't necessarily a bad thing. If it was, I wouldn't love those songs so much. Another great moment is a conversation between Vas Kallas and Loopy which is terribly funny. If it wasn't for my friend, I don't think I would had the pleasure of listening to "Transmission From Uranus". HuG's first two albums are pretty much out of print no thanks to their previous record label Energy Records which went under and actually sued HuG. If you have the money and love HuG as much as I do, I definitely think this is an album worth the dough to fork over.

5 out of 5 stars hail to the vortex.......2003-11-15

hanzel und gretyl are one of my all time favorite bands. transmissions from uranus is probably their best cd in my opinion. the songs flow together, and it's all capped off with trance planet vortex, quite possibly their best song. (i'm not sure what some people have heard, but i hung out with hug two days ago and their band is in NO WAY about to break up. their old drummer left...but he was replaced by seven.) if you're into harder sounding industrial music, this is a great cd to pick up.

    4 out of 5 stars HuG:Space-age wonders.......2002-02-27

I picked up this CD after I saw them at the palace in Hollywood when they opened up for Rammstein. They had even more guitar at the show than on the CDs. Unfortunately the sound messed up at the end of their set and they stopped playing. Hanzel und Gretyl are an amazing band. The lyrics are primarily in English and German, but the other languages they speak on their albums are French and, I think, Italian. FYO, The members of the band are not named Hanzel and Gretyl. The Lead vocalist, the girl w/the red hair , is called Vas Kallas, the Background singer, the guy w/the blond hair is called Lupie. The Bassist, the other girl, is called Ginger Bread, and The drummer is called Seven. Unfortunately, I think this band may no longer exist. It is obvious from the recodings at the end of both albums that the members don't get along very well.
P.S. Their first album, Ausgeflippt, is better.(4 1/2 stars)

    5 out of 5 stars True Industrial.......2001-06-19

Hanzel Und Gretyl play hard on this CD. Their aggessive style and creativity show through very well. If you like guitar oriented industrial music you'll love this CD.
