"Lord, How Come Me Here".......2007-06-18
I must add, to the praises above, that Kathleen Battle's "Lord, How Come Me Here" is the best "quick" explanation of the long-lasting effects of slavery that I can think of. The line, "They sold my children away," says it all.
And the VERY funny "Scandelize My Name" is also worth the price of the total album!

WOW!.......2007-03-22
You know, after owning both the CD and VHS of this performance, and having been coached by Sylvia Olden Lee herself, it is no wonder why spiritual mean so much to me. And these two ladies bare their souls and bring these masterpieces to life! WOW!!!
uhm......yeah right!!.......2006-06-21
Clearly you are mistaken. I don't know who that guy is-the person below recommended-but there is NO COMPARISON to JESSYE NORMAN AND KATHLEEN BATTLE!!!! Jessye Norman herself has *30* HONARY DOCTRATES from places like Harvard, Juliard, Yale, Cambridge....I mean HELLO!!!! That guy had no where near the ease, the musicality or even the breath support as these two veterans show!! It is a beautiful CD though it came out in 1991 and I HIGHLY recommend it.
scadalise my name.......2004-10-29
this isn't that good specially after hearing William Warfeild sing it. You can find him at www.wlym.com
Broadway takes on the spiritual ..........2004-01-29
... takes it on and puts it on the canvas by the end of the first round.
I'm going to be the dissenting voice here: thank goodness I signed this disk out of the public library 'cause I'm sure not going to listen to it twice.
There is nothing wrong with the performances. Jessye Norman and Kathleen Battle sing beautifully, and there's no problem with the pick-up orchestra under James Levine.
The problem, and it's huge, is the conception of the show and the musical arrangements. To make the video marketable, I suppose, the producers decided that the concert had to be big: big names, big arrangements, big effects. So we have eighteen spirituals given the musical theatre treatment, with a philharmonic chorus providing chain-gang sound effects, big brass, and big percussion -- including a chinese gong. A chinese gong in a spiritual??? Spare me! Almost every track turns out sounding like either a curtain-raiser or a big, end-of-act production number with cute and predictable modulations between some of the stanzas and the sort of curly-cue orchestral ornamentation typical of Broadway shows.
And you know what? It all kills the spirituals stone dead. The spiritual is one of those musical forms where less is more and very little is best of all. That's how they started, after all. That's how and why they worked for their original audiences, and that's why they were powerful enough to make the transition from folk song to art song. If you want to hear Battle sing spirituals that are irresistible, listen to the set on her Salzburg recital CD, also with Levine (ASIN B00000E31B). There, the music speaks for itself and speaks with a strength and a beauty that the tracks on this disk never approach.

Customer Reviews:
Something to talk about.......2004-07-12
Having paused briefly to release their "Greatest Hits" album at the end of 1983, Bucks Fizz returned in fine style with "I Hear Talk," their best album yet. The first single, a cover of The Romantics' "Talking In Your Sleep" was a good appetiser for the album to come. Grittier guitar work infused the trademark Bucks Fizz pop, adding a satisfying weight to their new sound. The group had clearly grown up. Their pop songs now had bite without sacrificing any essential bounce. This was as solid and cohesive album as you could wish for. The sounds were fashionably of their time without being faddy and the range of material played to the various strengths of the four members. Virtually everything about "I Hear Talk" worked: the songs, the production, the visuals. Only three A-sides emerged from the album, despite the undeniable strength of songs like "Breaking Me Up," "Thief In The Night," "Indebted To You" and "Tears On The Ballroom Floor". Both "Golden Days" and the ultra-catchy title track were amongst the strongest tracks the group ever released, supported by excellent videos. In "I Hear Talk," Bucks Fizz had an album to be truly proud of.
This re-release is augmented by a collection of B-sides from the era and a brace of tracks recorded four years later. "Invisible" was only released as a bonus track on the 12" of "I Hear Talk" but could easily have justified its place on the original album or even as an independent A-side. It is certainly stronger than, say, "January's Gone." The "I Hear Talk" album and its B-sides show interesting developments within the group, who were honing their own writing and production skills. Bobby G was probably the most talented in this department, but Cheryl Baker's writing and production on "Where Do I Go Now?" is worthy of mention. The set is rounded off with two 1988 tracks, the stronger of which is "Here's Looking At You," released as the B-side to the wonderful "Heart Of Stone." It is a strong and catchy song and more polished than the previously unreleased "Young Hearts," which sounds more like a work in progress than a finished product.

I just love this cd she sings like an angel. My favorite song is Can You Hear When I Talk To You she wrote for her dad that died.
"Geared Up" 4 Ashley Gearing!.......2004-08-01
This is not your typical CD single. Many people buy a cd single wanting an extra track or to go with a particular collection. Ashley Gearing's CD single "Can You Hear Me When I Talk To You", being released and nearly all sold out has been one of the most popular I have ever seen. The album is not yet released, and we have to wait quite some time yet. The song hit radio stations faster than warp speed and the picked up literally enough fans to make her upcoming album platinum! Though "Can You Hear Me When I Talk To You", is mainly meant to be country, this could be adult contemporary, easy listening, pop, all of the above! The words are all clear and you don't need a lyric sheet to understand. Her vocals are outstanding, clear as as a kitchen floor after being scrubbed by a swiffer! You really get caught up in the emotion of this amazing singer as she sings the song to her father who past away. "I miss you Daddy" the final words in the song are the icing on the cake that really capture you. "I'm the girl", written by Richard Marx, is completely different from the first track. Still sung super clear. Another country song about how you should treat a lady with respect, but unique. Though the words "I'm not exactly unattractive", and the continuing words do appear as though you should give a lady who is model-like more respect leaving me questioning, what about the rest of the women? But that is the writing of Richard Marx, once popular pop singer who writes for many bands out there. Though neither song was written by Ashley, they are both performed in such a superficial way that everyone will enjoy. I'm not a country fan, but I do like her music! Her popularity will only increase so make sure you buy this cd single if you can get your hands on it, and treat it as you would treat your most prized possession! Thanks Ashley! :-)
ASHLEY KICKS BUTT ON GENERAL HOSPITAL.......2004-04-14
I just had my first taste of Ashley's music. It was on General Hospital and it definatley kicked butt. I just bought her single and I cant wait to get it and rock out in my car
This Means So Much to Me!.......2004-03-14
I know just how Ashley feels! My dad died by an accidental electricution when i was thirteen years old. Now, one and a half years later, I still ask my dad the question "Can you hear me when I talk to you?" Although my heart is beginning to heal, I still have (and always will have) those days that are just extremely hard. On those days, I listen to Ashley's song and it encourages me to know that someone else feel the same way I do.
Ashley truly sings from her heart.......2004-02-29
Her singing evokes so much love and causes my heart to break all at the same time. Ashley's voice is so full of soul and love. Her voice is absolutely beautiful. Listening to Ashley's voice moved me to tears thinking of all of the losses I have experienced. As my heart was being tugged from every direction as I listened to Ashley. I felt as if I was feeling experiencing the same devistating loss that Ashley must have experienced. Ashley is already a superstar in my heart. God bless her and her heavenly voice.
