Psychedelic Country-Rock.......2007-07-02
Outside of the title track(Poco's magnum opus of 9:39)this is a straight ahead great country-rock album. However, if you have the patience for some interesting music the title track will absolutely amaze you. If Pink Floyd and Poco mixed together sounds interesting, you should hear it...one of the most ambitious pieces of music ever recorded. I'm sure someone somewhere blasted it, but quite frankly next to 'Rose of Cimarron' it's my favorite Poco number.
Disappointing in Many Ways.......2005-11-04
This follow-up to the classic "Good Feeling to Know" is a very disappointing release for many reasons. It was founder Richie Furay's final appearance on a Poco album and the material and production is just not that strong. Furay's "Let's Dance Tonight" is a nice rocker, featuring some great steel guitar by Rusty Young. Paul Cotton's cover of JJ Cale's "Magnolia" is also very good, as is his rocker "A Right Along". After that the quality drops dramatically. Most disappointing are Furay's cover of the Gram Parsons song "Brass Buttons" and his own "Crazy Eyes", a tribute to Parsons.
Poco recorded enough material for a double album and some of the rejected tunes were much stronger than those that ended up on "Crazy Eyes", showing that the band still were among the best in the business. By this time Furay's attention was clearly elsewhere and he soon left the band he founded to try to find greener pastures. As a swan song, "Crazy Eyes" is not worthy of the great legacy of the Furay era of Poco.
just buy it and enjoy........2005-04-15
i have followed these guys from day one. i have seen them, met them and i love them. you will love this album. a true masterpiece, perhaps their "rubber soul". they are unique, rusty young's steel is: words fail me, just buy it and listen.
It Just Can Not Be Improved On!.......2004-11-20
I totally agree with reviewer Randy, this is an exceptional, almost sublime bit of music, whether "album" or "cd." From Paul Cotton's spoken "get it" as a "here we GO!" intro into "Blue Water," a song the Rolling Stones would be proud to include in THEIR repitoire, thru multi-instruemtalist's Rusty Young's "Fools Gold" (I do believe that with the exception of Charlie<"Upchurch?">Daniels' fiddle, Bob Ezrin's piano, and Chris Hillman's mandolin...well, I KNOW it was Rusty playing all the instruments, we saw them at @#$%, upstate NY!), thru Tim Schmitt's "Here We Go Again" (for my money, Tim always contributed the very best song on Poco's albums), and, finishing up with Richey Furay contributing a better version of Gram Parsons' "Brass Buttons" than anyone else - probably even the late, great Gram himself. And that's just side one! In all honesty, I'd never made it past those for songs, thinking "perfection just cannot be improved upon." However, my Wife, my conscience, LOVES to play CD's all the way thru, and "A Right Along" is reminisicent of Paul Cotton's work on "A Good Feeling To Know," and "Crazy Eyes," Magnolia," and "Let's Dance Tonight" are all top notch, too, especially the instrumentation on "Magnolia"
I want to go on record right here: THIS "incarnation" of Poco was INFINITELY better the wh**rish, "more contemporary" Eagles EVER were, and "Crazy Eyes" proves that point. I mean, dig, did Poco EVER do a...disco song? I rest my case...
Saddle up for a wild ride!.......2004-09-25
So here it is, the forgotten opus of the classic (though not original) POCO line-up (1970-73). Some hail this as the holy grail of country rock, others find it mediocre or overblown. The truth about this cd is that it is like a drive across Canada: full of excitement at times and rather bland and uneventful for most of the journey. Most of the tunes on Crazy Eyes tread through the trails that the band blazed on their previous cds, so it lacks the excitment and adventure of their early releases. There's nothing bad here, but it does seem like POCO by numbers, except for two stellar, stand-out tracks: the title track, Furay's "crazy eyes" and Schmit's "here we go again".
"Crazy Eyes", the tune, is absolutely phenomenal. Clocking in at over nine minutes, it certain proved that POCO were ready to kick down more saloon doors by taking country inspired music to places it had never been before. Furay & the band are in top form on this song, which includes beautiful orchestration, banjo breaks, poetic lyrics and seriously Wagnerian overtones in the songs structure. It swoops and dives with emotion, each cresendo smashing through the speakers. This is music that is meant to be played very loud, preferably around midnight!
Schmit's "here we go again" is the exact opposite of Furay's title track. This tune is simple, rootsy country rock at its finest. It has a fabulous sing along, foot stompin' vibe that would have made it an amazing inclusion on POCO's A Good Feeling To Know cd.
Crazy Eyes is a decent cd, with two AMAZING songs. I would recommend other POCO releases first, most notibly A Good Feeling To Know, which contains everything that y'all could love about the mighty POCO.

Recorded live at the Prince Music Theater in Philadelphia, this double CD is one heck of an extensive tribute to Stephen Sondheim. Backed only by Paul Ford on piano, Mandy Patinkin gets through nearly three dozen songs penned by the Broadway master. Some are obvious (excerpts from Sunday in the Park with George, in which the singer created the title role), others less so ("If You Can Find Me I'm Here" from Evening Primrose). Patinkin is often mocked for his shivering falsetto, but here, it's actually when his voice explores a lower register that it falters. What's more interesting is when he tackles songs usually sung by women, such as Follies' "Broadway Baby" and Company's "Another Hundred People" and "You Could Drive a Person Crazy"--the latter hammed up so much that you can hear the chewing of the scenery. A distinctively mannered interpreter, Patinkin remains an acquired taste, but fans of his will be in heaven with this set. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
Patinkin Live.......2007-07-19
I am a huge Mandy Patinkin fan, and this is, without a doubt, one of the best CDs in my collection. The transitions between songs are excellent and seamless, plus the song selection was top-notch.
Sondheim recital.......2007-01-22
Probably the best way to approach these disks is to treat them like a recital in a concert hall. Rather as you would listen to a Schubert or Schumann song cycle. Taken together this way, we come to hear Sondheim as one of our finest composers, serious, comic, manic, depressive, always dead on target no matter what the subject matter. And Patinkin is perfect for these songs; he understands the meaning and value of every note and every word, just as a fine concert singer would do, and he makes his listeners understand, too. One of the most intriguing concept albums in recent memory, and a joy all the way through. Bob Finley, Palm Springs, CA.
Also a very dissapointed fan.......2003-08-22
I too LOVE Mandy and Stephen Sondheim and own just about everything both has ever made! I also have been to 6 of Mandy's live performances. This was truly a big dissapointment to me. Every concert I have seen Mandy in has been filled with emotion and his personality just grabs hold of you for an evening of wonderful escape-ism. This to me was very un-entertaining and I actually became irritated after awhile of listening to it. It seemed to drone on with out the wonderful feelings and emotions and soaring voice that Mandy typically puts into his music. I gave this as a gift too (since my friend and I had missed Mandy at his Sondheim review in DC last year) and felt badly that I had. There are so many other great recordings of Mandy...Kidults, Saturday in the Park with George, The Secret Garden, Mandy sings Rogers & Hammerstien and Sondheim. This one has just sat on my shelf after I played it through twice hoping to warm up to it...while my other recordings are very worn out with years of playing!
Adequate performance; poor entertainment.......2003-05-04
I received this disc the same day a "Philip Quast Live at the Donmar". The Quast disc has its own flaws (and I dont wish to compare the two performers) but it has been strung together in a more thoughtful manner, with witty imagination and using a more dangerous in the choice of songs, which is really where this disc fails. The songs here are generally enjoyable though rather standard, and the lack of cohesion (running the songs together doesnt count) means I just dip into the discs listening to a few favourites, rather than enjoying the whole show.
a very disappointed fan.......2003-02-05
I have every recording Patinkin appears on, even if he's only on one track; I adore his voice, his flair, his emotion, his ability to deliver a song.
But (much of) this recording is disappointing, mainly because Mr. Patinkin's voice in the lower range sounds muddled and forced, as though he's lost ability to control it (however, the more falsetto sounds are as clear and sharp as ever).
And I don't care for the format of this performance. Live recordings should have live audience reactions: one (often unrelated) song after another without applause had me wondering when--if ever--was the audience was going to be allowed to react.
Also, while I've never had the privilege of attending a Patinkin concert, I imagined that--above all-- he would be passionate. Perhaps he was. But what (mostly) comes across on the CD is a somber--almost technical--performance.
I hope he's healthy, that mixed quality of singing on this recording was just a fluke, and that his next CD will be a Five-star as all his previous ones have been

Nice cross-over.......2003-03-09
There is only a single track on "The Kiri Selection" that didn't come from one of her other releases, and that is "The World You're Coming Into" from Paul McCartney's Liverpool Oratorio. The rest of her songs can also be heard on "Kiri Sings Gershwin," "Come to the Fair - Folk Songs & Ballads," "From Heart to Heart" with Malcolm McNeill, and "Kiri Sings Kern."
It's a jumbled mixture but Dame Kiri negotiates the songs with a light, brilliant touch, never bringing too much heavy operatic artillery to bear on what are essentially popular songs. For those of you who are not operatically inclined, you may remember this lovely soprano from the 1981 marriage ceremony of HRH the Prince of Wales to the Lady Diana Spencer. Te Kanawa sang "Let the Bright Seraphim" (and wore a very strange hat).
Unlike some sopranos (my chorale director says Dame Joan never sang a consonant throughout her entire career), Kiri is scrupulous about her intonation and you will be able to understand almost every syllable she sings. My personal favorite is her rendition of Kern's "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes:" "They said some day you'll find,/ All who love are blind,/ When your heart's on fire,/ you must realize,/ Smoke gets in your eyes." She sings with intense pathos, yet a little tremble of courage. I can just see her sitting in some chic '30s cocktail lounge, head (with that outrageous hat on it) held high while her friends chaff her about her unfaithful love. She reaches up to brush the smoke or tears from her eyes and pretends to laugh away a remark that was much too personal.
When Kiri sustains a note, she does something with it. She doesn't just sit on it à la Pavrotti and let us admire her beautiful voice. She interprets every nuance of the lyrics, unlike some of my very favorite opera singers who don't cross over into popular music very well, e.g. Domingo, Ramey, Norman, and Dame Joan.
Te Kawana fans, unless you already own all four of the albums mentioned above, this CD is definitely worth your while. Kern and Gershwin enthusiasts will also find interpretations to treasure.
Top Performance.......1999-06-16
I have only just purchased this CD, and I'm in love with it already! Kiri's voice is so incredibly versatile, that you are just STUNNED by her ability to sing Gershwin, Kern and others like a jazz singer. She's incredible, and so's the recording. I'd recommend it to anyone, as Kiri's best CD outside of her West Side Story and full opera performance CD's. Her duet with Malcom O'Neill is amazing, and the way she interperets Gershwin's hits is so neat - far better than I've ever heard. The only SLIGHT moan I would have is that in one or two of the songs, she is a little to far away from the mic, and the orchestra are a little loud. But considering how great she sounds - does it matter? Make this your next Kiri CD purchase.

Customer Reviews:
"classical music's greatest Ambassador...Arthur Fiedler!".......2001-07-14
When you think of classical music, Boston Pops and all-around-good listening...only one name rose above the rest ~ Arthur Fiedler! Not only did he have the best arrangements...but kept up with the times...everything from The Beatles, Gershwin, Henry Mancini, Carmichael, Stevie Wonder, Kern and Raksin...the list could go on...Fiedler brought classical into another dimension, before only the adults were the fans...with his imagination and personality...looked into the hearts of young Americans...and yes, you guessed it...won them over!
This CD is living proof...take a group of popular standards...Richard Hayman (arranger) and the rest will fall into place...Fiedler and the Pops give each tune life, exciting and beautiful melodies prevail...never before had such popularity with concerts and appearances, combining classical with tunes of today existed...but with the waving of his wan a new standard was born.
This recording is 1956 to 1974 performances...the entire 18 track selections are outstanding...leaving a rich legacy for all to enjoy now and years to come...this album is a rarity with you the music-lover in mind.
