5 out of 5 stars a deluxe edition done right.......2007-07-13

Disc One is the reissued definitive recording of the 1980's.
Disc Two is chocked full of noisey Daydream Nation goodness performed live.

So often reissues are a ripoff. This set delivers the goods and then some.

5 out of 5 stars The best album of 1988...and 2007!.......2007-06-22

The fifth album (more or less) by The Best Rock Band of the Last 25 Years should need no introduction, and indeed if you're interested in buying the deluxe edition of Sonic Youth's "Daydream Nation," I can presume you're probably already a fan. You already know how the album summed up and then changed the course of the underground rock movement of the 80s, how the ample attention of critics, then music fans, then record labels set the stage for the alternative rock revolution of the 90s--oh well whatever Nevermind and yada yada yada. If, however, you haven't already drank the Kool-Aid (and you should!), some brief notes about the "basic" edition...

"Daydream Nation" is still hailed as Sonic Youth's grand masterpiece, and yeah, it still holds up as such (confession: it's my second favorite SY album after Sister), even if it doesn't seem as radical today as it did when it came out. Sure, there are swirling whirlwinds of oddly-(de)tuned guitars and feedback fading in, out and sometimes interrupting the songs, but make no mistake, there are definitely songs to be found here. The openening "Teenage Riot" is, for its galloping drums and lyrical cheekiness (imagining Dinosaur Jr's J. Mascis as president, or so Thurston Moore has said) basically a melodic and even hummable pop song. Even a more "experimental" song like "The Sprawl" has a certain immediacy, with bassist/vocalist Kim Gordon saying straigt out "does f**k you sound simple enough?" Heck, the closing "trilogy" of the album has all the power and intensity familiar to any classic rock fans, only with a live-wire buzzing and skree that comes from playing in one of Glenn Branca's guitar-army ensembles. Really, it's not so radical after all (for a taste of something far weirder, check out Twin Infinitives, which was released around the same time as DN by Royal Trux, a New York band friendly with Sonic Youth).

For us fan(atic)s, the real treat here is the second disc of this set, which features live versions of all the album's tracks, culled from the band's original tour supporting the album, albeit in a different order (SY has recently announced it will play "Daydream Nation" as part of a special show, presumably in the album's running order). These tracks, mostly of excellent sound quality, are shorter but sharper than the album versions. "Total Trash" is done as an instrumental (I could be wrong, but they seem to be quoting the early Pink Floyd's instrumental "Interstellar Overdrive" in one spot), preceded by another instrumental, "Totally Trashed," which toys around with electronics a bit. Mostly these are no-holds-barred performances that clearly draw on the band's love of hardcore punk and NYC No Wave (DNA, Teenage Jesus & the Jerks). I don't know how a non-fan would react, but for yours truly it's pure Sonic bliss.

Another great bonus on disc two is the inclusion of four cover songs, three of which were taken from now hard-to-find tribute albums (this was before that concept got beaten to death): "Within You Without You" (The Beatles), "Computer Age" (Neil Young) and "Electricity" (Captain Beefheart). There's also a version of Mudhoney's "Touch Me I'm Sick," with demented vocals from Kim, taken from a split 7" (as in vinyl, kids) that had the other band doing SY's "Halloween" on the reverse (alas, that version isn't included here). The Beatles cover in particular shows how the band could translate their sound into completely different realms--the original, of course, was played mostly with sitars.

Add all that to a package that includes ultra-Kool, and rare, pictures and an extensive essay by longtime SY friend Byron Coley, and you have a true Sonic feast. Like they did with the Goo Deluxe Edition and the Dirty (Deluxe Edition), Sonic Youth rewards fans and newcomers alike almost to the bursting point. Now let's hope they burn down the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame before too long...

5 out of 5 stars Deluxe Treatment of Sonic Youth's Breakthrough Album.......2007-06-12

Daydream Nation is clearly Sonic Youth's breakthrough album. A two lp set that focused all their previous ideas into one cohesive and brilliant album. The songs are stretched out more (though still song length)giving more of an idea of what they sounded like live. Music at this time was stuck in pop doldrums. Sonic Youth, which had built up a cult following, after the release of this album were then signed by a major label and brought all the indie rock bands into the light eventually including one that was just getting a start in Seattle that would soon eclipse all of them in popularity. However, back to Daydream Nation. The sprawling, though in no way self indulgent quality of the album took Sonic Youth into a new direction. Now, in getting the deluxe reissue treatment,it sheds new light on the album. On the 2nd disc you not only get live versions of all of the songs on the album (and Sonic Youth live takes what they do in the studio to a new level) but rarities as their version of "Within You, Without You" which was previously only available on a rare tribute album. If Daydream Nation were released for the first time this year, it would be one of the best albums of the year and with this deluxe reissue, in many ways it is.

Amazon.com essential recording

The essential New York rock band of the post-punk era, Sonic Youth care as much about the quasi-symphonic, microtonal art-guitar music of composers like Rhys Chatham and Glenn Branca as they do about the rock-song form, and with Daydream Nation, they struck their greatest balance between the two. The songs hover gorgeously for extended lengths, letting guitarists Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo intertwine fragile tonalities as carefully as it's possible to do at wall-shaking volume, while Moore and bassist Kim Gordon's untutored voices disaffectedly intone words that flirt with pop stupidity, high-art eloquence, and urban cool. When they bear down and rock, they do it with a blurry intensity that finds gorgeousness at the heart of discord. --Douglas Wolk

5 out of 5 stars Takes time but worth the wait.......2007-07-05

Yeh this album may take a while to get into for some but stick with it, it is well worth the wait. For me though I have to say teenage riot just hooked me from the off great track with a beautiful slow build up. This album doesnt realy hit you straight off but rather gets you by supprise. Realy dont know how I can describe this album as you can hear so many influences coming through from Black Flag to the Velvet Underground.

Buy this and give it a listen, then listen again. It will grow on you.

5 out of 5 stars very good for the avant garde accepting folks.......2007-06-14

sonic youth is not for everyone.they have a raw style which is anything but pretty and radio-freindly.with that said they're also one of the most inventive bands to come along in quite some time because of the risks they've taken and how they approach song composition.if you can stand a little noise from a band who are trying to sound beautiful in a much different way than most, give em a try and you shouldn't be dissapointed!

5 out of 5 stars Loved It.......2007-04-17

I bought Daydream Nation after hearing the opening track (Teenage Riot) on the radio, I oynly really bought the album for that song, but as I soon found out the album is packed to the rim with songs that are just as good if not better then Teenage Riot. As many grunge albums are this is a grower, and I can see how many people would not like this album, but for me I loved this. It easily enters my Top 10 albums.

I believe that Sonic Youth are one of the most underated bands in the history of music and had they continued with this form (ie actually having a song structure) they could have been credited with starting Grunge instead of Nirvana who are incorrectly described as inventing grunge.

However f you enjoy Nirvana, Pearl Jam, The Replacements or anything grunge I advise you give this album a go.

5 out of 5 stars Sonic Youth's Masterpiece: Daydream Nation.......2007-04-02

This is INCREDIBLE work to say the least. An '80s Alterna-"indie"-Rock staple. Sonic Youth is MUCH MORE than your average experimental noise underground (at the time) Rock 'n' Roll band. Daydream Nation VAULTED Sonic Youth: Thurston Moore, Kim Gordon, Lee Ranaldo, & Steve Shelley to a NEW level of recognition as pioneers of Rock n Roll past and original trailblazers in a dawn of a new beginning. Basically the album that made Sonic Youth famous, while still being in N.Y.s indie music scene.
Originally released in 1988, Daydream Nation is Sonic Youth's sixth studio release, containing an album's worth of their coolest breezy, energetic songs and stretching Rock to far unreachable heights.
S.Y. brought their sound into the mainstream, influencing hundreds of bands including Nirvana. My Favorite songs on Daydream Nation: Opener "Teen Age Riot" - "Silver Rocket" - "The Sprawl" - 'Cross the Breeze" - "Hey Joni" - "Candle" -contains a reference to "Tonight's The Night"(1975) by Neil Young w/ line: "It's safe to say, Candle, TONIGHT'S the DAY -Candle, It's alright now candle, the wind's away-Candle. Never thought I'd see a dark sky falling....."
I sometimes wonder in what state "Alternative" music would be in without Sonic Youth. They changed and shifted the landscape's sound into a more radical, apocalyptic state. And who would of thought they would go on so many years, as of now 25+ & 18(+)-(there are a lot of side projects); albums or so, some are better than others and I own all studio albums.
In 1990 Sonic Youth released Goo (their 7th) their first for major-label DGC, to reach a wider more appreciative audience. And in 1991 Nirvana followed going to major label DGC and igniting the "grunge" movement in the mainstream. But, believe me Daydream Nation (NOT Goo) has GAINED my attention as well as thousands(+) more! One SERIOUS Record.
Another one of my ALL TIME favorites. It is also cited as making a vast array of "greatest albums of all time" lists(quoted from double album re-issue including live 2nd disc).
To me, this is the best 80s album I have ever heard and Sonic Youth's absolute Best.

4 out of 5 stars dragon overated.......2007-06-25

dragonforce is awesome dont get me wrong, but there are much better bands out there. this cd is great i love it. a few songs on here somewhat suck. but its worth buying. if anything the best two songs are the first two. if you dont like anything else with a constant whammy, just buy the songs you like on itunes.

3 out of 5 stars Meh...........2007-05-02

This is my first (and only) Dragonforce CD and honestly I tried... I tried real hard to like it, but I just don't get what people see in it. Yes, these guys are very skilled. Which is why I can't possibly give them a very low rating; guys this technically adept don't deserve the lowest rating! But these songs are just so uninteresting to me. One track sounds exactly like the next. It's just shred, shred, shred, at full-throttle, nonstop. I guess that's the point... but I find myself thinking "I can't wait for this CD to end already so I can put on something else..."

And in fact I like power metal as a genre, in general. Including the fantasy lyrics and everything. But I guess I like something with a bit more added interest, like some symphonic elements maybe, or a bit more progressive elements, or at least some occasional variation in tempo! A lot of folks put down Yngwie Malmsteen for "soul-less shredding" and I've never agreed with them; I like Yngwie Malmsteen's music a lot and I find quite a few of his compositions interesting and emotionally rich as well. But for some reason that is the very problem I have with this Dragonforce CD; the compositions don't seem very creative, and in the midst of all this breakneck speed it just seems to lack feeling...

5 out of 5 stars Conan the Guitararian.......2007-04-14

No seriously, this album is amazing. Dragonforce is amazing. Any band that sings about epic quests, battling demons, blazing mountains of power, heroes of the night, fires of doom, tasting steel death, and so on, deserves homage. All you hear from most rock bands today is some punk kid whining about how depressed he is, or that he's lost without his girlfriend, or that he hates society. Then there is Dragonforce. Epic songs at a mind-exploding pace combining every fantasy book and RPG game I've played crunched into audio bliss.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Metal.......2007-02-21

Incredible music! To all those who love speed metal, this is one of the greatest!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2007-02-19

This is awesome. Very intense, powerful...a 'marathon of music.' The lyrics are amazing, as are the vocals and guitars. The melodies are great as well; this is one of those CDs where you can just totally lose yourself for an hour again and again. And scream along to the music. Or, just enjoy it quietly, whichever you like...either way, definitely awesome, and definitely a worthy purchase.

It's been almost a quarter century since a youthful, avant-garde band with cut-rate guitars and an impetus for experimental noise burst into the New York underground, and it's very possible that as its 21st record to date, Rather Ripped is also Sonic Youth's most accessible. Familiar are Kim Gordon's distinctive oral tonality and the tangled sheen of guitar dissonance that plays out between Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo. But a majority of the dozen songs are as pop-smart as they come, including a pair from Gordon: "Reena," which ranks among her finest, and a pensive pair ("Lights Out" and "Turquoise Boy") that have the 50-plus singer's ethereal voice recalling a street-worn Francoise Hardy. Ever the whiz kid, Moore ponders religious hostility in the meditative "Do You Believe in Rapture" and skewers promiscuity on the Lou Reed-ish "Sleepin' Around," while Ranaldo's requisite number "Rats"--all futuristic and feedback-heavy--is among his best compositions. As the record fades out with Moore's near-folk song "Or"--the alternative conjunction linking "ready" and "not"--Sonic Youth is as genial as ever: another phase in a punk rock novel that ostensibly has many chapters to go. --Scott Holter

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The middle of a second renaissance.......2007-07-06

Although most are calling this SY's most accessible album to date, don't expect radio-friendly rock and smooth grooves start to finish. The no-wave noise is mostly non-existent now, but there's still DIFFERENT kinds of noise here, like on the opening of "Sleepin' Around," the grungy bleed of "Turquoise Boy," and the turbulent squeal of some pretty stark bridges on multiple tracks.

The album opens with their best one-two-three punch start-up since Daydream Nation, including the groovy single, "Incinerate," and the pulsing and ethereal "Do You Believe in Rapture?" Sonic Youth is already firmly into another renaissance after the Murray Street comeback. Ignored and allowed to noodle away with entirely unenergetic efforts in the mid to late 90s, they were assumed dead or dying. But after Murray and the even better Sonic Nurse, they were back on top where they belonged, summoning up a different type of beast.

The dissonance may be way down, but the melodies are primed for the surface and age isn't slowing them down a bit. Some stubborn fans may decry this form of SY, and others who turned a nose at albums like Bad Moon Rising may find themselves getting interested for the first time. Either way, there's no reason why they can't be almost as popular now as they were fifteen and twenty years ago when they were alternative rock gods.

Best cuts: "Do You Believe in Rapture?" "Incinerate," "Reena," "Jams Run Free," "Pink Steam," "Turquoise Boy," "The Neutral," "Sleepin' Around," "Rats"

4 out of 5 stars Sonic Youth's Rock Radio Friendly Album.......2007-06-22

'Rather Ripped' is Sonic Youth's most recent studio album released in June of 2006. It may be a letdown for many of Sonic Youth's diehard fans, with it's toned down sonic deliveries. Basically it's just a solid straight forward Rock 'n' Roll album, which I feel is very well done.
I do consider myself to be a very Big fan of SY as well a fan of the three singer's (Thurston, Kim, & Lee) solo works and side projects. I own 23 albums by Sonic Youth, which includes Ciccione Youth, Thurston Moore's 'Psychic Hearts' and all their studio releases since 1982.
With 'Rather Ripped' the band ditches the epic grooves of previous records such as 'Daydream Nation' and more recent 2002's 'Murray Street' and replaces it (for now)with a more subtle, softer 'pop' type of sound.
SY shows that they mastered the art of writing catchy pop tunes on 'Rather Ripped' more so then on 1990s 'Goo' or 1992's 'Dirty'-
This record also has a Good balance of singing (mainly Thurston & Kim) with Kim Gordon singing a lot more than she did on 'Murray..' or 'Sonic Nurse'. She does sing some of her most beautiful songs yet with the opener 'Reena' and standout 'Turquoise Boy' which is the longest song on this album.
Sure, you can still hear some heavy guitar playing since that is a Sonic Youth staple, but 'Rather Ripped' exchanges long experimental jam passages with a lighter nicely welcomed softer style.
It's all still very explosive! and it is one of the best albums released in 2006.
No need to dwell on comparisons to past albums in Sonic Youth's vast catalog. They have been one of the best rock bands in their 25 + year career. Always changing and progressing their sound and this is one of their best albums yet.

5 out of 5 stars One of their best since "NYC Ghosts and Flowers".......2007-04-26

The title says it all. Honestly, though, I would have given this four stars before I saw them perform the album in Providence, mid-February, and if any hardcore SY fans were kind of disappointed by it, go see them play it. Their onstage versions aren't much different, but they mixed it in with a lot of stuff from "Sister" and "Daydream Nation," which put this album in the proper context. It really is closer to those albums than anything else they've done recently.

5 out of 5 stars Still Interesting After All These Years.......2007-04-09

Sonic Youth are without peer in the history of rock music. They've been recording music for a quarter of a century now. Everyone knows the rock band cliché: about five years of vitality, then a long, sad decline. One can fudge the numbers of years, but this trajectory more or less describes the careers of The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Ramones, PiL, etc, etc, ad nauseum. So according to the usual rock music narrative, Sonic Youth should have stopped being interesting sometime after Goo. Yet, in 2006 we have the remarkable Rather Ripped. They may have made some minor missteps along the way (NYC Ghosts), but Rather Ripped is the third great album in a row from SY, and it may be the popiest of their career. Of course, only Sonic Youth could be called pop when doing a moody, sneering song about the parallels between being a rocker and a stripper, but the fact remains that twenty five years into the game SY have discovered hooks. The first two tracks, "Reena" and "Incinerate," are practically top 40 material, and even the most typically SY-ish track, "Turquoise Boy," opens with a beautifully melodic guitar solo before gradually shifting into the gorgeous metal machine music that Sonic Youth is renowned for. So what keeps SY so relevant when many of their contemporaries have packed it in? Kim and Thurston's family values? Or the band's committed professionalism and good taste? Who'd have ever thought that with Sonic Youth the source of their talent might conceivably be boiled down to the virtues of personal commitment and clear headed dedication to craft?

4 out of 5 stars Accessable.......2007-03-18

Remember to buy this album if you have alway liked SY. That way when you go see them play live, you'll recognize more of their songs. Better than good, not great.

After spending the 1980s terrorizing the underground alternative scene with their oddly tuned guitars and inventive song structure, this New York City art-punk band started the next decade with a major label deal and a determination to make rock loud and sexy for all concerned. The single "Kool Thing," which features a cameo from Public Enemy's Chuck D, immediately proved they had both the dynamic control and the range to meet such a challenge. Backed by an album of taut, riff-driven anthems ("Dirty Boots," "Titanium Expose") and moments of extended feedback bliss (Lee Ranaldo's "Mote"), Sonic Youth redefined what hard rock would sound like in the '90s. It's no wonder Nirvana respected them so. --Rob O'Connor

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Consistency.......2007-03-21

This album will scratch your fuzz itch to the bone. Youth's fast paced rock is consistent and prevalent on Goo. A must have for new Sonic Youth fans.

4 out of 5 stars "My Friend Goo Has A Real Tatoo".......2006-11-05

Sonic Youth's Goo is a definite indie rock masterpiece. From the opening "Dirty Boots", to "My Friend Goo" (my favorite song on the album because it's just so damn catchy), to the closing "Titanium Expose", this record has it all. If you're just getting into Sonic Youth, I would recommend picking up this album and "Dirty". It might take a little while to get into cause it's really different, but take the chance. You'll be glad you did.

5 out of 5 stars Sonic noise and alien grooves.......2006-03-25

Inspired by the New York art scene, Sonic Youth bludgeoned their way into the rock and roll world courtesy of SST Records, which handled all their material up to "Goo", which is now considered an alt-rock classic.
Sonic Youth specialize in a peculiar blend of detuned and unconventionally tuned guitars, swirling in feedback, distortion and volume. Far from being nothing but a metallic shriek, SY somehow manage to work in bits of beauty, albeit the kind that extra-terrestrials probably dig, a solid beat thanks to Steve Shelley, one of rock's best drummers, and vocals that scream, moan, whisper and croon.
"Dirty Boots" opens with an almost ethereal intro until bassist Kim Gordon bulls her way in with fuzz bass and Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo slam away at their guitars, creating sounds that captivate as well as maim.
We progress through a homage to Karen Carpenter (!?), a guest rap by Chuck D. and a glorious feedback symphony with "Mote" that churns and burns, making the listener fear his stereo may overload and combust into flames.
"Disappearer" is the most accessible tune before closing with "Scooter + Jinx" and "Titanium Exposure".
"Goo" and Sonic Youth are not for the faint hearted. Music should reflect all our emotions and SY, with every release, somehow capture the sound of chaos, the beauty of parallel worlds and lyrics of urban life. The fact that they have survived for a couple of decades now shows that there is a need for this special kind of noise in each one of us.

5 out of 5 stars It'll Grab ya!.......2006-02-10

This is definitely one of those albums that will grab you and hang on for the ride. Weird, quirky, groovin', heavy, fun and of course way Kool... For anyone who digs alternative, rock or grunge... Goo should definitely be on your to do list.

4 out of 5 stars It grew on me!.......2006-01-27

I'm a big SY fan, but this wasn't one of the first albums of theirs i got, thinking it to be overhyped and perhaps too overly commercial, if that was possible. So then I bought it, and I liked some of the songs, especially the very palatable KOOL THING, the rocking DIRTY BOOTS, and the spiraling DISAPPEARER. and other than those, this album mostly just collected dust for a while. This felt like a SY that belonged to someone else-- someone with a skateboard. But then I put it back in and, especially after the Goo Remasters came out recently, I haven't been able to put it down. TUNIC is a great song about karen carpenter, and i listen to it all the time. MY FRIEND GOO is a good, playful song, and TITANIUM EXPOSE kicks. and the rest of the songs except SCOOTER&JINX also are very good. One thing worth mentioning is that the Remasters have a really amazing song called "Lee #2" which is probably now one of my favorites that he's ever made, and i can't figure out why it wasn't put on the album in the first place!

New York City's Lower East Side has always attracted bohemian freaks looking to shock the world, but with EVOL (Love spelled backwards)--their third album after a live tape and several EPs--Sonic Youth finally figured a way to make their skronk count. Combining alternate guitar tunings with nearly linear songwriting, SY proved they could harness their energy into a combustible engine. The multititled closer, "Expressway to Yr. Skull" (or "Madonna, Sean, and Me"), is pure apocalyptic beauty, while "Shadow of a Doubt" succeeds by being more subdued and suggestive. --Rob O'Connor

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars overflowing with emotion..........2006-04-14

This is not simply a "touching" album that suggests a mood. EVOL grips on from the very beginning, turns you upside down and immerses you in a somber, dark world that no other album can create. And it will keep you coming back for more and more.

The haunting guitars of the opener "Tom Violence" only hint at what is to come. "Shadow of a Doubt" is perhaps the best SY song with Gordon on vocals; her whisper backed by a sudden assault of noise sends chills up your spine. "In the Kingdom #19" (listen for Thurston throwing fireworks in the studio after one minute) and "Secret Girls" are abrasive, ethereal tracks that may take more than one listen to appreciate, but are among the band's best. The heralded closer "Expressway to Yr Skull (The Crucifixion of Sean Penn)" is an epic journey, beginning with Thurston's unforgettable cry "We're gonna kill the California girls," building to a frantic pace and then slowing down into a spacious wall of noise.

This is SY at their height lyrically. Daydream Nation may have more "masterpieces" of feedback but EVOL leaves more of an impression. Each song has its own way of leaving you breathless, and its clear that after the 39 minute adventure Sonic Youth has to be one of the greatest bands of our time, if ever.

5 out of 5 stars Sonic Youth's moody masterpiece.......2006-04-09

Originally released on the wonderful SST label (check out the website), "Evol" was the first really definitive Sonic Youth album. From the ultra disturbing woman on the cover (Lung Leg, whoever that is, apparently from some indie film) to the music itself, we embark on a sonic journey through the nether regions of our minds. This is where nightmares dwell and resurface in the detuned guitars that howl, feedback, ring out and swirl about under and over the songs themselves.
"Tom Violence" is somewhat subtle, at least as the CD opens (I don't think the track listing is correct), with the guitar noize waiting until near tracks' end to take us deep into audio alienation.
A gruesome spoken word piece giving us details of a gory auto wreck, a piano playing a beautiful snippet and a storm of guitar feedback and dissonant tones that closes "Sean, Madonna and Me", or, alternately titled "Expressway To Yr Skull" give us a view of the dark side from a safe distance. Album owners of the original release may recall that at the end of "Expressway To Yr Skull", which closed the album, unlike "Bubblegum" that closes the CD, there is no outgroove to allow the needle to return to its stand. Thus, the drone continues on and on, sometimes nearly hypnotizing you before you realize what's going on. Can't do this with a binary code. A must have for SY fans.

4 out of 5 stars The nightmare album.......2006-04-06

If Daydream Nation sounds like an album made in a semi-conscious state, Evol is made in deep unconsciousness. Some of the songs are as scary as the Beatles' 'Strawberry Fields' and could very well be the soundtrack of depression and nightmares.

Is it therefor bad? Hell no! this album, like all the SY albums in the 80's is fantastic and should be in everyone's collection.

5 out of 5 stars sonic youth's best work in my opinion.......2005-10-01

i would like to say first off their is not a bad song on this cd, it is all mind tripping bliss. my favorite 2 songs being tom violence and marilyn moore with of course the masterpiece from this album expressway to yr. skull. i do own most of sonic youth's other stuff except work from 98-2003 but ive heard most of this, and i can also say that i think this is the most lyrically strong cd they have also. the two love songs on this cd star power and green light are just amazing they drew me in the first time i heard them sonic youth might be noise punk to the core but they can still make pretty songs. another thing i would like to say is i think this album is much better than daydream nation. if u talk 2 most sonic youth fans they will tell you daydream nation is the best cd but i totally disagree, i think this is musically lyrically and just all around superb to daydream nation. this was their height the prior realeases to this which were "confusioin is sex" and bad moon rising are amazing but arent for everyone.then the realeases prior 2 this are great also but i consider this their height. if u like sonic youth and u already have this cd and not much of the other stuff i would recommend sister which in my opinion was very close 2 this album in being my favorite i recommend washing machine also which goes against some of their medicore early 90's work like dirty and goo

5 out of 5 stars so perfect.......2005-07-17

you can't go wrong with sonic youth. their execussion & expression is brilliant. "evol" is yet another masterpiece of theirs. bow down!

Having successfully balanced atonal freak-outs with rock song structure on their previous release, EVOL, Sonic Youth went further towards convention with this concise, "all rock" (their words) album. Recorded on old tube equipment instead of then-emerging digital technology, the album's 10 songs have an impressively warm, cozy vibe even as they tear up the pavement underneath. "(I Got a) Catholic Block," "Pacific Coast Highway," and a vicious cover of Crime's "Hot Wire My Heart" are propelled by the newfound power of drummer Steve Shelley, who doesn't let the band's arty self-consciousness inhibit the songs' natural drive. --Rob O'Connor

5 out of 5 stars This is the SY record to discover.......2007-07-05

WHen someone tells me they never saw the big deal with Sonic Youth I always throw on Sister. Yeah, I know Daydream is great but I always thought this was their masterpiece. It put both their musicianship and recording prowess together in one disk.

Sister was recorded on old tube boards and you can really tell by the soft tones and warm fuzz. Feels like a wish coming true.

5 out of 5 stars Unique sound, unique songs.......2007-03-08

Back in the days where Sonic Youth didn't have to use a specific song structure or strings arrangement. It's everything. The whole sound, the songs, the environment it creates. This is one of the best cds I own.

4 out of 5 stars A little bit of everything.......2006-05-15

While Sonic Youth have earned their share of detractors over the past couple decades, there's no denying that they've been responsible for some of the most fiercely individualistic music of that time, and those who love their occasionally inviting, occasionally ugly, but always intriguing sound should find Sister to be among their best efforts. After several albums seemingly devoted to freaking out as many people as possible, Sister was the Youth's most blatant early flirtation with conventional rock songwriting. It was still a far cry from the mature, almost pastoral work of the band's current autumnal phase, but Sister saw the Youth moving past the self-consciously avant-garde stylings of their early albums to create a much more accessible, immediate, and listenable sound.

Where Confusion is Sex, Bad Moon Rising, and EVOL were as much curiosities as they were works of art, Sister was probably the first Sonic Youth album where the songwriting spoke for itself, succeeding solely as music rather than as a middle finger to the establishment. There were some good songs on their old albums, no doubt, but it was here, unhindered by the quasi-musical experiments that characterized much of their earlier career, that the Youth came up with a batch of great songs like they would on Daydream Nation, Goo, Dirty, and the more recent Murray Street and Sonic Nurse.

Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo still took the lead with their odd mix of fragile microtonalities and dizzying noise storms, but this time around their patented form of guitar abuse was married to memorable melodies and even the occasional hook. Steve Shelley, whom I've long considered to be a tragically underrated drummer, was also in extremely fine form here; the more I listen to this album, the more I appreciate how his beats drive the songs' peaks and valleys in intensity rather than just mirroring them. For an illustration, just check out Stereo Sanctity, where his drumming is all pounding aggression in the louder moments before turning to jazzy precision for the quieter ones. While a lot is made of Thurston and Lee's innovations on guitar, Steve's constant powerful presence on the kit does just as much, if not more, to separate Sonic Youth from pretty much every other underground band of their time. If you listen to SY immediately before or after listening to say, the Pixies, the difference is that much more pronounced.

Foreshadowing the more rocking direction they'd take as the '80's turned into the '90's, the band was at its best on this album when it ratcheted up the intensity-propulsive, swirling tracks like Catholic Block, Stereo Sanctity, and White Cross are all quintessential Sonic Youth songs that helped write the book on alternative rock well before Nirvana made the label fashionable. That said, the band also impresses with slower, looser pieces like the brilliant opener Schizophrenia and Kotton Krown, which turn the volume down a couple notches but sacrifice none of the complexity and noisy experimentation. Even Pacific Coast Highway, one of the obligatory Kim Gordon songs, is excellent in spite of her, erm, limitations as a vocalist, with feedback-drenched guitars scraping in the background behind her freaky, half-sung-half-spoken mantras. Just for good measure, they included a cover as well, in the form of an eyebrow-singeing version of Crime's Hotwire my Heart that gives you a nice idea of what the Youth would've sounded like if they'd taken a more straightforward route. But of course, straightforwardness has never really been SY's emphasis, and we fans are all the better off for it.

3 out of 5 stars and do you like to ...?.......2006-01-27

Firstly, CATHOLIC BLOCK (I'VE GOT A) is one of their best songs, by far. there are other great songs on here as well, COTTON CROWN, HOT WIRE MY HEART, SCHIZOPHRENIA, TUFF GNARL, and PACIFIC COAST HIGHWAY all come to mind. but generally this album is not that listenable to me as a whole because of the monotonous overly-punk-styled vocals. still, it's a good album. just not where i'd introduce someone to SY.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Album From An Incredible Band..........2005-12-07

Sonic Youth is one of the more influential and revered bands of the last 20 years. They are rightfully known as the Godfathers of Indie Rock. I can think of no other band that has been consistently putting out quality music for as long as Sonic Youth. Some bands manage to string together 2 or 3 good albums, but then tend to fade into obscurity, break-up, or start to suck. Amazingly, Sonic Youth have yet to succumb to any of those fates. They have had the occasional slump (the mid-to-late 90's), yet they are still here- producing worthwhile, quality albums. In my mind, their creative peak was the late 80's; when they put out the amazing trilogy of `Evol', `Sister', and `Daydream Nation'. I love this band and own every single one of their albums. That being said, `Sister' is my favorite.
`Sister' was initially released on SST records in 1987, and in my mind stands as the quintessential Sonic Youth release. There is a mythic, mystical undercurrent pulling the listener thru this delicious album. It is hard to quantify and explain. The guitar interplay of Thurston and Lee is something special- at times beautifully melodic, dissonant, violent, loving, and ethereal. These songs really speak to me.
This awesome work open with `Schizophrenia' (you really need to hear this song live sometime). I like how both Kim and Thurston share vocals on this track- something they should do more often, which they do in fact numerous times on `Sister'. Lyrically this is one of Sonic Youth's finest efforts, which should be no surprise to anyone when they realize that the Youth were heavily into Philip K. Dick at the time this album was written. Feelings of insanity, isolation, loneliness, chaos, and love pervade `Sister'- for these were all themes with which Dick was intimately familiar. A number of Sonic Youth's best tracks appear on this album. `Stereo Sanctity' is dissonant, delirious, and wonderful. This is followed by the reflective and mysterious `Pipeline/ Kill Time', which makes use of Lee's poetic lyrics, rolling drums, and incredible feedback control. After this amazing track comes `Tuff Gnarl', which ends with a devastating and divinely dissonant guitar frenzy. Maintaining the momentum, next up is `Pacific Coast Highway', one of Kim Gordon's best tracks- she sounds genuinely scary at the outset, which serves as a perfect lead-in to more guitar beauty. This stretch here- tracks 4 through 7, marks one of the best I have heard on ANY album.
`Cotton Crown' follows `Hot Wire My Heart' (which I could've done without). `Cotton Crown' is the closest thing Sonic Youth has to a love song, but don't let that deter you- I HATE love songs. The instrumental section in the middle of this song is a thing of beauty and power. Dissonant guitars have never sounded so soothing (with the exception of My Bloody Valentine's Loveless). `White Cross' follows this gem, ending the album on a rocking note. `Master-Dik' actually ends this version of `Sister' (I don't think it was on the original SST version). `Master-Dik' is a VERY tongue-in-cheek Sonic Youth take on Hip Hop, complete with lots of distorted guitars and even a KISS sample.
If you are only familiar with recent Sonic Youth, and you find yourself wishing they would rock out more, than you need this album. This is probably the Youth's most rocking album. The guitar is blistering throughout. And all though it is blistering, distorted, and dissonant; it is highly soothing and quite trance inducing at times. The guitar interplay here paved the way for the amazing sonics exhibited on their next album, the undisputed masterpiece- `Daydream Nation'.
The song writing on `Sister' is some of their best- cosmically poetic and mystically enchanting. This, in conjunction with the otherworldly music make for a fascinating listen. If you like Sonic Youth, but have yet to get this album, you must do so immediately. If you are only familiar with major label Youth (post-Goo), then you must IMMEDIATELY get this incredible album. And finally, if you are curious about Sonic Youth, but have yet to delve into their daunting catalogue, this might not be the best place to start. `Goo' & `Daydream Nation' might be better jumping off points. However, if you are musically adventurous, a guitarist, or a fan of interesting rock, you will most likely love this wonderfully dissonant work. After many years, and hundreds upon hundreds of CD's and vinyl albums, `Sister' remains one of my favorites.

5 out of 5 stars DIRTY still sounds FRESH .......2007-04-03

DIRTY was released by Sonic Youth in 1992 during the grunge years. This album, their 8th release was produced and directed by Butch Vig the same producer for Nirvana's Nevermind and the Smashing Pumpkins debut: Gish.
Always changing their sound, this is their grunge effort. Very upbeat with a natural rock coolness that includes propulsive layers of sound and fury. DIRTY is the second shot of shorter pop songs in the same way "Goo" was produced. Both Goo and DIRTY sound more accessible w/o the long instrumental guitar noise passages that graced earlier albums My favorite songs on DIRTY are: "100%" - "Swimsuit Issue" - "Drunken Butterfly" - "Shoot" - "Sugar Cane" - "Orange Rolls,Angel's Spit" - "Chapel Hill" - "JC" - & "Purr"
ESSENTIAL SONIC YOUTH along with Daydream Nation(which sounds completely different) and EVOL- I also LOVE Murray Street, Sister, Thousand Leaves + 2006s Rather Ripped. I am also a REALLY BIG fan, I had to buy all of their albums.
DIRTY shows a wonderful transition for Sonic Youth still sounds fresh and clean - 15 years after it's release.

4 out of 5 stars another very solid SY release.......2007-03-14

Each Sonic Youth album has a very unique flavor, and each Sonic Youth album stands out in their extremely lengthy catalouge... yet it is hard to find a Sonic Youth album that is virtually flawless. Obviously, Sonic Youth are not at all interested with perfection, rather atmosphere... but isn't that what makes this band so great?

There seems to be two basic problems with Sonic Youth releases. On some, the production is way too obscure and lacking to let the beauty of the album be heard, and on others, the soaring sections of feedback and reverb can sometimes wander off into obscure directions with seemingly no purpose. Both are aspects that I do not criticize too harshly, because I think of Sonic Youth as artists rather than musicians, throwing the ugly in with the beautiful to create a very realistic picture. Reguardless, these flaws do bring down the overall release somewhat.

In 'Dirty', there are no throw out tracks, great (but not too great wich is a good thing) production, and the feedback sessions are shortened and too the point. This is a very straightforward release by Sonic Youth standards, but also a very dark and atmospheric work at the same time. Everything seems in place here, a classic SY release. The only complaint I have is that in some places, 'Dirty' may be a little too straightforward. Not quite a masterpiece such as 'Daydream Nation' or 'A Thousand Leaves', but a very solid, and entertaining album as a whole.

1 out of 5 stars I Don't Get It.......2006-04-14

Clearly I'm far too closed minded for this album. If I wanted to listen to people screaming and crashing and banging completely out of sync I'd open my window at 5am while the neighbors are screaming at each other again and the early-bird construction crew is cutting concrete outside my apartment while the garbage truck is slamming the dumpster onto the pavement repeatedly. Absolutely no musicality, no message, NO TALENT.

If I wanted to hear this I could go down to the local foundary yard and listen to them cutting steel.. FOR FREE.

I could go into a blow-by-blow for each track on why it's musical murder but that would be a grand waste of my time. Horrible.

This is one band that the indie snobs made it "uncool" to dislike, so everyone looks around like "wow this is flippin genious" while in their heads they can't believe that everyone else likes them and they don't. GET OVER IT. You want arty music, go listen to Sigur Ros or Godspeed you Black Emperor.

5 out of 5 stars Dirty sounds, but dirty is nice isn't it..........2006-03-05

"Dirty" was Sonic Youth's most commercial album. I am not sure if this was done on purpose, but it makes 'Dirty' SY's most open album. Open for the lovers of alternative/progressive rock with an almost jazzlike way of listening to music.

Musically it may not be as interesting as their 'Daydream Nation' or masterpiece 'Sister' but there are great songs on here. Without a doubt this is their best collection of songs.

'100%' was an MTV hit and could rival with 'Smells Like Teen Spirit', the track following that 'Swimsuit Issue' (Gordon) with strained and coarse vocals has a great break and suddenly slows down.

A dreamer side of SY can mostly be found in the songs sung by Kim Gordon like 'PR' or the thumping, metallike 'Drunken Butterfly'. 'Shoot' is carried by Kim's voice and a rolling bassline.

Best song on the album is the brilliant 'Sugar Kane' with some great moments of pure musical genious, clarity, chord changes. I could go and on. Similar songs like 'Chapel Hill' and 'Purr' come close too.

Even know almost 15 years later there is so much you can still discover in the album, it surely shows that Sonic Youth are the godfathers of all the indie/underground bands that followed. Husker Du and Dinosaur came close, but in importance to alternative music only the Beatles, Neil Young and the Velvet Underground are above Sonic Youth.

Their approach to music is almost jazzlike, and like many jazzartists, after a while they started making fully rounded songs but of a scary quality.

If you are interested in buying a Sonic Youth album but never heard anything before get this one.

5 out of 5 stars Not as Dirty as it sounds.......2006-01-27

A very good sonic youth effort, I must say. Admittedly, there are a lot of songs on here I actually just don't listen to for one reason or another. But the songs I do listen to make up for it.
100% - GREAT. rocks. 'nuff said.
SWIMSUIT ISSUE - really like the lyrics of this kim number. "don't touch my breast / i'm just working at the desk"
THERESA'S SOUND-WORLD - good vocal by thurston here, but the title really does it justice. it's a sound-world of waxing guitars.
DRUNKEN BUTTERFLY - this song even sounds like its title, and is one of my favorites on the album. kim sings ' i love you i love you i love you whats your name?' quite appropriately. grating riff.
SHOOT - another good Kim song, about domestic violence in some way, it seems. but maybe that's my over-literal interpretation. "you only hit me when you wanna be pleased".. kind of a sad, but in the end, vengeful song. i like it a lot.
WISH FULFILLMENT - another favorite on here. like the lyrics a lot, and good vocals by lee. check out the rehearsal recording from the remasters as well, for an interesting take.
SUGAR KANE - really great song, rocks hard. brings back a lot of good memories of someone i used to have feelings for, probably because they liked this song so much.
ORANGE ROLLS, ANGEL'S SPIT - don't listen to this one. just too obnoxious for me.
YOUTH AGAINST FASCISM - i really want to like this song, but..
NIC FIT - no. this reminds me of being a 16-year-old at a TRUCK GRIND YOUR FACE show, not wanting to have people spill beer on me anymore.
ON THE STRIP - another great kim song. dark feeling, reminds me of SHOOT.
CHAPEL HILL - one of the songs i liked a lot when i first got this album because it was immediately accessible, and it still is pretty rocking.
JC - a high point of this album, definitely. something about this song is hypnotic and captivating, like you don't want to leave its presence. great lyrical work here and sonically it's just so fresh.
PURR - good song, but not -that- good.
CREME BRULEE - eh. like i said.

5 out of 5 stars Among the best Rock albums ever made.......2007-07-09

I love this album. It takes me back to a time when Rock gods still walked the earth.

Though all the songs are worth listening to, "Edie" is my favorite. I can almost see the woman the song is being sung too. Melancholy, you bet. Though I've officially played it enough times now to drive my wife batty and had to remove the CD from the player, the song is still capable of producing tears.

If you like bands that effectively produced that "wall of sound" experience, you'll like this album.

5 out of 5 stars great album.......2007-05-22

The Cult are an awesome band and im glad their back. This album shows why they are such an amazing band.

4 out of 5 stars Big hits, great riffs and some stunted stiffs.......2007-04-04

Sun King.

Fire Woman.

Nuff said really, the aforementioned tunes being towering masterpieces of rock. It just doesn't get any better than these two great tunes, both of which climbed the charts in various territories.

The Cult came to prominence with this, their masterpiece (sort of) album. Cranking out riff driven hard rock numbers that are contemporary with the hair metal daze but quite apart from them they created a far more restrained beast. Ian Astbury has soulful lyrics and a soulful smooth voice to match. His vocal register certainly isn't deep but it's rich and is full bodied - he's no high end strainer.

As for the music it's riff driven but the riffs aren't overpowering, Bill Duffy seeming not to suffer from an ego problem - his riffs here are pretty darn good but they are part of the music, not THE music. The production is handled by Bob Rock with Mike Fraser doing the recording - so you know that aspect will be great and we also get a guest appearance from Iggy Pop of all people.

Apart from the aforementioned awesome tracks this album is blessed with the hook laden American Horse and the beautiful Edie (ciao baby). Sweet Soul Sister is also pretty nice though the following track, Soul Asylum is a touch too similar. New York City has plenty of life and the Iggy Pop guest slot as well as fast and mellow sections that spark thing up quite a lot.

The only real downside for this reliably good album are some of the later tracks don't quite match the excellence of the first few. There are a few good sections of songs but overall they don't quite wash. As funky as Automatic Blues is I just can't warm to it overmuch and the last couple of tracks are just below par, no other way of putting it. Which is a pity as they drag down an otherwise stellar hard rock 'n' roll release from a band that always seemed somehow distinct from the ditzy bright neon light rawk bands.

All up I'd recommend picking this up as it's their best album and not at all tainted by the era it was born in. In fact when they played Australia Big Day Out festival in '96 they blew the alterna rock bands off the stage with clear and concise riffing and quality rock. Respekt...

5 out of 5 stars They don't make 'em like this anymore.......2007-01-31

Damn, this is good rock & roll. In my mind there are four classic balls-out guitar-rock (is there any other kind?) albums: Van Halen's first, Back in Black, Appetite for Destruction, and Sonic Temple. And of them all, Sonic Temple probably rocks the hardest. It's a solid wall of buzz-saw, multi-tracked guitars. And it's not just a jam-fest: the songwriting is top-notch (except for the weak "New York City"). I used to put this CD on to get stoked before I went into the gym. Almost twenty years later, it hasn't aged one bit.

5 out of 5 stars Sonic Temple.......2007-01-17

This is the album that divided the fans back in the day. My goth friends thought they had sold out with this album and the people who love metal thought it was too weird. I on the other hand, like all kinds of music and thought this was the best hard rock album of the late 80's. It was loud and bombastic, it put all of the other bad metal bands like poison, skid row and other to shame. This album is why Metallica picked Bob Rock to produced their black album.

WONDERFUL SOUND TRACK!! INCREDIBLY MOVING AND BITTERSWEET!

Every track on this CD is worth listening to - it is so rare to own a CD that you do not press the 'skip' button occassionally!

I would highly encourage all who are interested to purchase this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent quailty movie score.......2005-09-15

This movie score ranks with the best in capturing the spirit of the western theme. Already should be rated a classic.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST MOVIE EVER MADE.......2005-03-29

This is my favorite movie of all time. The casting was perfect for each character played in this movie. I couldnt make this movie more perfect than it was already made. Like i said the this is the best movie that has ever been made, and i have seen alot of movies.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful and pastoral soundtrack.......2002-12-26

Basil Poledouris, known mostly for his bombastic action music, gives us an extremely well composed lush, beautiful soundtrack to Lonesome Dove. The "Theme from Lonesome Dove" which opens the score is simply outstanding and is one of the most beautiful pieces of music i've ever heard. It is a perfect setting for the open plains and vast, pastoral landscape. This wonderful theme occurs differently in several other tracks and in full force in the final track, "Goodbye Ladies/Finale". "Night Mares" contains noble fanfares for horn and various percussion effects to accompany the theme once again. Other highlights are "On the Trail" with its upbeat drive to it and the final 2 tracks that take the breath away with that main theme. Also various instruments besides the regular symphony orchestra are used in this score to represent the setting of the film, such as fiddles, banjos, accordions, and the like. You can hear these instruments in tracks such as "Arkansas Pilgrim", "The Leaving", and "Murdering Horse Thieves". I think that Basil Poledouris should compose for more films like this because his music is truly amazing and leaves you wanting more. A very good soundtrack that gets the best rating and is well deserved.
