Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Groovies' best album.......2006-01-04

I know Roy Loney fans will disagree with me (pointing to "Teenage Head" as the Groovies' finest album), but I considor this to be the band's best album. The Groovies were, at the time, a complete anachronism. Few bands were as unabashedly old fashioned in sound as them. While other bands were making "rock" albums with overloads of synthesizers and production, the Groovies were making albums that sound like they could've come out during the British Invasion. However, this wasn't a bad thing, far from it. The group showed how great classic rock 'n' roll was, rejecting the pretenses that plauged the lame arena rock bands that were popular at the time. Their albums after this were good but inconsistent. Those albums had moments of brilliance, but also had a good amount of filler and uninspired covers. This album, however, is great from start to finish. Not to mention the fact that the title track is, as many people have noted, one of power pop's finest moments. As I stated above, this album was a complete anachronism when it was released. However, they were one of the first bands to do this, paving the way for many subsequent power pop bands and becoming one of America's greatest cult bands. An overlooked masterpeice, this is the best starting place (along with "Groovies Greatest Grooves") to get acquainted with one of America's greatest bands.

5 out of 5 stars An Anachronism: Ahead of (and Behind) its Time.......2005-04-13

I find the seeming obscurity of this album difficult to understand based upon the strength of the title track alone, which is - to put it mildly - brilliant. Shake Some Action (the song) is a pulse-pounding power-pop / proto-punk anthem in the grandest sense; the rest of the album, however, is a bit of a curious anachronism. The Groovies find themselves shying away from the grittier, more raw (often almost sleazy) Stones-esque sound they created on Teenage Head in favor of a more melodic 'Beatles circa 1966' sound - but in 1976! Put side by side with original British Invasion era hits, these songs stand up for themselves, unfortunately they were released ten years too late (and, as such, found primarily only a cult following). One could argue, however, that these songs too were ahead of their time (for everything, particularly musicals fads, work in cycles). Was it not the music of the British Invasion 9as well as American Garage) that was the primary influence on the then burgeoning (in 1976 that is) punk movement? And it would be only a few more years hence that power-pop would make its greatest maks on the music charts with the likes of The Romantics, The Knack, and others doing what The Flamin' Groovies had already done to perfection.

3 out of 5 stars This came out when?.......2002-12-24

This album gets off to a great start with the amazing title track -- you'd think that a solid proto-punk album influenced by British invasion bands was on the way. Well, the sound was certainly influenced by the bands of the British invasion, but not for the better. The Groovies go on to mimic the Beatles on just about every song, finally covering the "Misery" near the end of the album. It's not unlistenable by any means, but it's not original, either. Everyone should be familiar with the first song, but the ones that follow are less memorable.

5 out of 5 stars The World Stands Still.......2001-11-22

I have heard the song "Shake Some Action" some 5,000 times since 1977, and from the opening notes, and from the moment those first, dark, pulsing notes ring out, the same thing happens: The world stands still, reality drops away, and I am enveloped in a total shivering, dark, throbbing universe of thrill, memory and obsession. Not only is this song one of the greatest pop recordings ever, it is one of the most striking works of art ever created. Absolute perfection. Nothing else on the album is quite as good as the song "Shake Some Action" (whose first five seconds alone are towering, monumental), but very little in all of human creative endeavor quite matches it.

5 out of 5 stars A Timeless Classic.......2001-01-17

When San Francisco's Flamin Groovies went to London to reinvent themselves as neo-mods in the early 70s they teamed up with Dave Edmunds to create one of my all-time and forever top-ten favorite albums. Driving rhythm and classic tunes abound here but the at core of the disc (for me) are the exquisite three-guitar arrangements. Subtle and dense at the same time. Listen to the guitars on "Don't You Lie to Me" or "Shake Some Action." Brilliant. Kudos to both Groovie Cyril Jordan and producer Edmunds. The San Francisco Groovies were cool; greasy and rockin, and the later London Groovie albums have their moments but this one is a masterpiece. Put five plus marks behind my five stars!

      Product Description

Shake Some Action! is a dynamic power-pop band from Seattle. Their debut CD showcases songwriter James Hall's talent for writing insanely catchy three minute pop songs, from the gorgeous Rickenbacker jangle of "Complicated" and "Someone Else's Friend" to the melodic crunch of "I Can See Where This Is Going Now" and "Damaged" to the downright snarl of "What You Want Me To Do". Fans of power-pop and British Invasion are well advised to take a listen.

      1 out of 5 stars Bootleg.......2004-04-06

Yes, another bootleg of the Flamin' Groovies. This band has been ripped off repeatedly by the scumbag record labels. Don't support the bootleggers, support the artists. Buy a copy of "Groovies Greatest Grooves" or Norton's "Slow Death" instead.

      4 out of 5 stars Rare Groovies.......2001-07-11

This collection does have a purpose, but you have to dig to find it since the discs don't come with liner notes. The first half of disc 1 includes all the studio tracks cut in Australia in 1986 to capitalize on the Groovies tour down-under (it shows the influence of punk on the band's sound). The second half of disc 1 and the first half of disc 2 include a live recording of the Groovies at a 1987 music festival in Spain (the quality is quite good for a live set and was recorded by Dave Edmunds -- of "Shake Some Action" fame). The last half of disc 2 consists of the entire first Groovies album from 1968 (great Loney material!). My first impulse is to give it three stars for lack of information about such different sounding stuff. But the Groovies themselves -- and the price -- overcome reservations on that count. So, four stars it is. Enjoy!

      4 out of 5 stars Knowledge helps.......2001-07-10

I agree with the previous reviewer that this collection is confusing. But once you know the sources for the tracks the collection makes some sense and gives you a good sense of the history of the Groovies. The first section contains studio material from the mid-seventies and shows the influences of punk on the (post-Loney)band's sound. The live tracks that span the second half of disc one and the first half of disc two come from the nineties Groovies. The sound is pretty good for a live recording and is fun enough for a casual listen. The last section (except for the final two tracks, which I believe are also from the mid-seventies) is the complete set of the Loney-era Groovies limited edition first album from 1968. Great historical stuff that shows where the band was headed. Enjoy.

      1 out of 5 stars Clueless Collection.......2000-08-31

This compilation seems to have randomly tossed together 2 CDs worth of material without so much as a hint of their genius. There are exactly two cuts listed here, "You Tore Me Down" and the immortal "Shake Some Action" that deserve a place on this release. Where are "Between the Lines", "Sometimes", "Yes It's True" and a plethora of other great Groovies grooves? This set is incomprehensible. Get "Groovies' Greatest Grooves" and get happy.

Coming out of New York the way only a true band should...With no money and nothing but dreams. Ian's vocals are crushing, but Ethan's guitar takes this music to an incredible level. Have to be biased on this review, cause i've heard them live, and I've been following their music for the past three years. This CD was well worth the wait, and now, we can only hope for more.

Raw, dirty, absolutely crashing sound. A sweet cross-section of
the early Dickies mixed with the garagey chaos of Halo of Flies,
all thrown together with a buzzsaw guitar reminiscent of late 70's Buzzcocks/999. Vocalist Ian Magee has that wailing Jaggeresque howl...you've heard it before, yet quite swaggeringly original. Way cooler than those other NYC garage
punk "saviors" the Jokes...I mean, the Strokes. As unpolished
as your pair of Buster Browns' you used to run through puddles

with in 2nd grade. Finally, it's great to be from NYC again.

          Album Description

Goodbye Flatland - Track by Track

Ride - This is the kind of song that demands to be put at the front of the line. Hook heavy supercharged mid tempo crunchy rocker with an intriguing cohesion of sonic elements. All the science, art and soul that goes into bringing a rock song to life finds some representation in this mix. It raises the curtain and serves notice that 54 40 is in the house

Animal in Pain - This nugget rockets into outer aural space like a bat out of hell on a particularly hot day. Osborne pushes his upper register to the max and is rewarded for living on the edge. The song kind of demanded it," says Osborne I tried to sing it lower but it just wasn't as alive as the music track was...so I had to push it." It's loud, rowdy and playful. Any song that can work "Bedrock" into the mix more than worthy...hell - proof positive that 54 40 can rock it with the best of them. Note the sampled drum loop that kicks off Animal in Pain and sets the tone for the track. "It's from and old single from 1965, that Allen, our manager had kicking around the studio. The band was called The Grasshoppers and the song was called Mod Socks," says Osborne. " Allen alerted me to it suggesting it would worth considering if we were ever looking for a beat to play around with. Once I heard it - yeah...this is cool."

Take Me Out - What's cool about this track is that it evokes the sweet scent of vintage Euro-pop but without any of the goofy stuff. It rolls as it rocks. Osborne's lead vocal cut like a knife, Johnson' s beat is relentless and everything else just seem to hit all the right notes in this instant classic. A majestic sampled loop of an 19th century spiritual hymn sets the mood and the band takes care of the rest.

Hope The Hell I Haven't Died - The band gets revs up its engine for this four on the floor rocker - churning the sacred power chord into their own groovy brew. Osbornes' ability to infuse irony in his timbre allows him to paint an animated stroke across what is a rather dark lyric. Some nifty production with cascading counter melodies makes it even better.

Not Enough To Make You Happy - The band paints happiness deep black or at least deep blue. A crawling and very eerie guitar line only adds to menace of the driving beat. More sonic strokes of secondary harmony push the groove into a deep dark pocket. Watch your step.

Who Is Sylvia - The acoustic guitar makes it's first headline appearance to help Osborne tell the tale of Sylvia - whoever she is? The implied sense that something bad just happened or is about to happen gives this cut some mojo. A solid album track.

Broken Girl - A sadly beautiful melody that builds into a massive chorus and powerful performance. It's a serious song that demands your attention and heart.

Goodbye Flatland - It begins in a stark barren almost black and white place. A kind of neo folk and thoughtful passage of time vibe that ultimately kicks into wild funhouse ride of pure rock power. It's a surprise and effective.

Secret - The band manages to jangle without needing to jingle on this track which is a nifty trick - very meaty beaty big and bouncy. A tasty keyboard performance gives the mix just enough of twist to keep spinning in the right direction.

Giants - There's a guitar hook on this track that could land Moby Dick. Breezy acoustic treatment lets this track breath easy and achieve a very comfortable cruising altitude - it's a good ride.

Seventeen On - The Chorus treatment showcase the producer vision Osborne brought to the project. He's painting with sound. It's a compelling technique - a very subtle tractor beam that draws you in.

I Wish I Knew This is definitive and classic 54-40 tune. Relentless power and rhythm from drummer Matt Johnson and bassist Brad Merritt, the crafty edge of Phil Comparelli's guitar work and the signature phrasing, timbre and lyrical muse of lead singer Neil Osborne The bands goes out rocking, in balance and

          Album Description

Vancouver's 54-40 takes their name from James K. Polk's presidential campaign slogan ''Fifty-Four Forty or Fight,'' which sought to expand the U.S. border northward. 54-40 formed in 1981, and by the time the band's self-titled album in 1986 arrived, their folk/roots approach had earned them favorable comparisons to R.E.M. Subsequent albums found the band moving into harder-edged territory. This is their 2003 album on Smilin' Buddha.

          5 out of 5 stars Goodbye Flatland.......2004-03-23

Another amazing release by a talented band. These guys never cease to amaze me with their lyrics, melodies, and sounds. Ok, so they are one of my favorites, but if you have other 54-40 CD's, then you'll know what I mean. I wonder why these guys aren't giants in the industry, but then again, I like them the way they are. This CD features such gems as Giants, Ride, and Seventeen On. Oh ya, Animal In Pain, is a riot! With so much intellegint rock packed into one CD, I feel I've stolen something. Keep up the good work guys!

          4 out of 5 stars Canada's version of REM.......2003-09-12

54-40 don't really sound like REM. That is not the point. The point is that for years 54-40 has put out consistantly good music that ranges in style from straight ahead rockers to alt country influenced. Kind of like REM, good music, different styles, etc. But somehow success in the US has eluded 54-40.

All that being said Flatland is a very worthy CD. Some first rate stuff and the only reason it dosen't get 5 is that nothing can compare to their first CD the self titled 54-40. Give the boys from North of the border a listen, you will like what you hear.
