Album Description

Ocean Avenue is the major label debut album from the five-piece Yellowcard. Produced by Neal Avron (Everclear, New Found Glory), the album sees the band update the popular SoCal pop-punk sound with help from classically trained violinist Sean Mackin.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Okay, I suppose..........2007-03-23

I don't know, this CD just didn't really do it for me. The chord progressions for many of the songs aren't that great. That's not the case for "Way Away", "Ocean Avenue", "Only One", "One Year, Six Months" and a few other very listenable songs on this album. But it's not really worth it to buy the whole album, in my opinion. I guess I could see this being more appealing to some other people, you know, the scream-my-heart-out kind, who don't really need music, they just need a way to vent their anger. Of course, as the afore mentioned songs will prove, there IS some real music on this album. Just not as much as I think Yellowcard is capable of.

5 out of 5 stars great cd.......2006-10-19

this is their best cd so far. im sure their music is just going to get better!! good album, buy the cd!

1 out of 5 stars I don't get it.......2006-10-16

A pop rock band with a violin? I'm sorry, I just don't get it. It's not like the band sucks, they're good musicians if you're into that poppy sound, but the violin just confuses me. There's a time and place for violin in rock music, with an ensemble arrangement for example, but not solo. IMHO.

5 out of 5 stars They finally got somewhere.......2006-07-15

Ocean Avenue did wonders for YC. They finally got onto the radio after about 7 years of working their @$$es off. And this album does not dissapoint. It has everything a good band needs to make it big. And compared to their first albums, "Midget Tossing", and "Where We Stand", this album is proof that any band can go from struggling to famous if they try.

5 out of 5 stars The second best CD I've ever bought.......2006-06-14

The best is lights and sounds. This CD has some of the best drums not in Metallica or Rush I have ever heard. The violin is the best outside of Led Zeppelin (think Kashmir) or Frank Zappa. The best songs, the ones my band is doing, would be the first three and Life of a salesman. other notables include Miles Apart, Empty Apartment, and Back Home. the rest of the songs aren't bad, they're just a little slow and soft.

After several recordings of American popular music, Te Kanawa has become a very effective crooner, phrasing with heretofore missing panache. The easy, jazzy Riddle-like arrangements are bouncy and appealing. But after 15 selections, the mysterious dissatisfaction of eating Chinese food and feeling hungry an hour later remains. Tunick writes in his program notes that "the waltz ballads ... are poignant and moving, but never stray into sentimentality." But why not? A little mushiness would serve this recording well, and also contribute to a desperately lacking variety of interpretation. Still, the voice is consistently gorgeous; it would just be nice to distinguish the happy songs from the sad. --Barbara Eisner Bayer

5 out of 5 stars Irving Berlin at his best.......2007-06-26

Kiri's glorious voice interprets Irving Berlin masterpieces beautifully with expression and respect for these American favorites.

5 out of 5 stars Get's my vote!.......2004-04-03

OK. Full disclosure: I'm one of those helpless souls who is just madly in love with the sounds that emanate from Dame Kiri Te Kanawa's vocal chords. I suppose there are many artists who can interpret Irving Berlin's songs with more, what's the word, authenticity?

And I've heard many of them, and I love their work.

But Kiri Te Kanawa is different. She was given one of the most beautiful instruments in the history of sound recordings. Thank God the recording companies figured out what they had and put her in front of a microphone early and often.

We have had a rare opportunity to experience a great artist from almost the start of her career clear through to what now must be it's final stages.

I, for one, feel privileged.

Thank you, Dame Kiri. The world is a little better place because of you.

5 out of 5 stars Jazzy and Beautiful.......2002-09-01

This album exemplifies Kiri's amazing, vast dose of talent for musical interpretation. Though I tend to enjoy mostly classical music, this album has opened doors to a wonderful world of classical-jazz, which I find quite beautiful! Perhaps for some, it is an aquired taste...yet I was hooked the moment I heard track one...and have since become quite the "modern Kiri" fan!~Brava once again~

5 out of 5 stars I love it!.......2002-05-14

If you like Irving Berlin and Kiri Te Kanawa you'll probably enjoy this album as much as I do!

I can imagine Nick and Nora Charles listening to this at one of Nick's favorite dives! It will transport you to a sophisticated time and place that may have never existed except in literature and debutante coming out parties.

Gatsby would have loved it, and surely would have invited Kiri to all his parties!

1 out of 5 stars Simply Dreadful.......2001-01-17

Just terrible! Although her voice has mellowed and is quite beautiful, Ms Te Kanawa has absolutely no instinct or feel for this distinctly American music. She's just lost in her own peculiar Kiwi wonderland. She is not aided but what have to be some of the worst arrangements of this music ever recorded.

Her version of "What'll I do" alone earns her a place on the top ten list of abominable recordings of American music.

    Album Description

Ocean Avenue is the sound of a young band flexing its imaginative muscle and emerging from behind the one-sound-fits-all sonic shadow of Green Day to produce a singularly distinctive collection of songs. Sure, the album's opening salvo 'Way Away' is straight out of the SoCal punk rock playbook, but by the shimmering intro to 'Only One' it's increasingly obvious that there's more on offer here than one-dimensional posturing. It's not that Yellowcard are any slouches in the sonic thrash department, as evidenced by the breathless rush of 'Twentythree'--it's just that they're not afraid to let their strong lyrics and musical smarts speak for them as much as their twentysomething stamina. This Asia exclusive includes a bonus AVCD that includes videos for 'Ocean Avenue', 'Only One', 'Walk Away' plus 2 live from the Electric Factory of 'Ocean Avenue' and 'Only One' with the audio AOL sessions of 'Empty Apartment' & 'View From Heaven' and 'Miles Apart' (live at the Electric Factory). 4 out of 5 stars Historic Ragtime.......2001-03-31

Charles Thompson was a contemporary of Jelly Roll Morton and James P. Johnson, and was one of the leading figues of the second generation of St. Louis ragtime pianists.

This album, made up of live recordings from the early 1960s, finds Thompson in reasonable form, playing some of his best known pieces plus a few standards. His powers had declined a little from his 1948-49 American Music recordings, but he was still able to play in an entertaining fashion. Many of the performances are rather short, but these are historic recordings by a little known but important figue in ragtime.

Delmark is to be commended for this release: let's hope they re-issue the rest of the Euphonic back catalogue. Anyone interested in ragtime and early jazz should consider buying this CD.

Quality music at a great price, this collection features 20 tracks including 'How Deep Is The Ocean', 'No Strings', 'Puttin' On The Ritz' & 'Heatwave'. The Swingles have, unusually, incorporated electric keyboards, horns and drums into their usually acappella approach, resulting in some thoroughly modern interpretations of Berlin's classics. Customer Reviews:

    2 out of 5 stars Doesn't work for me........2006-05-04

I LOVE the Swingle Singers. The first time I heard them sing Bach back in the 60's I was driving a car and I was so blown away that I had to pull off the road. And I LOVE Irving Berlin's music; his message is simple and direct and tuneful. And therein lies the rub. To me, the jazz vocal styles, the contemporary harmonies and the whimsical utterances of the Swingle Singers go together with Irving Berlin's music like oil and water; they just don't mix. The words and melodies are those of Irving Berlin but the end result isn't Irving Berlin. Admittedly this is one man's opinion, and others might take great pleasure in the Swingle Singers' unfailing virtuosity and inventiveness. But if you anticipate the straighforward tunes and emotional directness in Berlin's music, you are apt to be disappointed.

NOT recorded by the London Phil as advertised. Light-weight arrangements by light-weight International Orchestra. Not worth the small price.
