Album Description
Errol Morris' adroitly assembled documentary film "The Fog of War" examines the career of Robert S. McNamara-- United States Secretary of Defense during the Kennedy and Johnson Administrations and whose tenure includes the Vietnam War and the Cuban Missile Crises. Combining excerpts from 26 hours of interviews with McNamara, archival footage, filmed recreations, as well as newly declassified White House recordings Morris' filmmaking illuminates a national past that ominously parallels the contemporary political present. Morris reveals what previous biographies failed to investigatethe relationship between McNamara and the infamous United States General Curtis LeMay and their involvement in the firebombing of Tokyoalong with 67 other Japanese citiesin 1945. Errol Morris states "The easy thing to say would be McNamara is a bad guy, he did all these bad things...the story is more complex and far more interesting than I imagined. The disturbing thing is that this was a man with real ethical dimension who did something terrible."
As with music previously contributed to Morris' films, Philip Glass' score to "The Fog of War" effortlessly supports and enhances the film. The music, at times lyrical and at other times intense, deepens the horrifying images of war, highlighting the ambiguities of McNamara's characterand the consequences of his actions. Glass' music reinforces Morris' effort to understand the difficult ethical questions about governing and power raised by "The Fog of War".
Album Description

Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2006-08-09
Intriguing historical account of MacNamara- what he was thinking, what he did not say during two administrations involved in the Viet Name war. Use of film footage and Philip Glass' eerie and ominous soundtrack further developed the power of this film.
The film was great, but the score made it outstanding. .......2004-08-05
Ever thought about what it would be like to watch a film with no muscial score? I have and I did for this documentary. Believe me when I write this, there's no way this film would have been as good without Glass' melodic brutality looming in the background.
Glass does something wonderful with this score; he gives war, uncertainty, doubt and fear a musical element, an audible personality that captures each bomb, burnt building and ominous threat in complete perfection, leaving your ears and your mind in a state of disbelief and amazement, thinking to yourself, "Wow, that music fits this segment like a glove."
The Thin Blue Line score made me an instant Glass fan but this score made me borderline Glass fanatic.
In my opinion, he surpasses Carter Burwell in the category of most unflinching film composer.......by a long shot.
A Great Soundtrack for a Great Film.......2004-05-24
Errol Morris is the best documentary film maker ever and The Fog of War is his crowning achievement. The film explores the complexity of war and how it evolves. There is no political bias or agenda here...just plain truth and facts. Great work. Equal to the task is Phillip Glass's soundtrack. The music is haunting and eerie.
ANOTHER GREAT GLASS SCORE!.......2004-03-31
I'll keep this review short, just like the length of the pieces on the CD. This is yet another great score by Glass, and superbly recorded as well. Glass uses his classic strings and percussion to great effect and oftentimes great surprise as well.
This score has more variety than Glass's score for another Morris film, "The Thin Blue Line". By the way, will "The Thin Blue Line" ever get released on DVD?
The pieces are all short ones, which makes it an easier listen for Glass newbies I would imagine, but I would have preferred a few longer pieces- all the short pieces make it sound like "Glass fragments"- on some pieces once Glass gets going he has to come to a stop.
Still, I wholeheartedly recommend this wonderful CD!
Glass' dramatic score is Fog's 'secret sauce'.......2004-03-22
If you've seen Errol Morris' "The Fog of War," you know that a big part of what makes the movie click is Phillip Glass' outstanding soundtrack. Morris and Glass have worked together before and it shows. Morris' imagery (the falling dominos, the accelerating list of Japanese cities, JFK's slow-blinking visage before TV cameras) appears to be literally lifted off the screen into 3-D by the strength of Glass' score. I don't think you'll find another movie (certainly no other documentary) where the words, images and music mesh with such dramatic effect.

Good listening.......2000-06-11
For years I listened to the theme music on Inspector Morse and wondered what it was. Now that Amazon makes it easy to track such things down, I know. These three albums (volumes 1, 2, and 3) combine Barrington Pheloung's wonderful theme and background music with Morse's favorites (be warned, we get into some opera here). The three volumes provide an excellent evening of classical music.

Charlie As Queen.......2007-06-26
"Guitar Hero" is worth the price of this album. It's " Ziggy Stardust" with more schmoltz, awesome guitar work and the amazing vocals that make Charlie unique. Like Queen, you always know who it is when your hearing Charlie. Take a chance on this album, as obscure as the band has become there may truly be no second chance for "NO SECOND CHANCE."
Charlie's Best Work.......2006-06-30
Charlie's finest work brings their musical and lyrical talents together to create an entire album that is enjoyable from start to finish. With the exception of a couple good songs from "Fight Dirty" this is the frst and last great album from Charlie showcasing their rock n roll roots and awesome talents.

Customer Reviews:
a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-02-22
The great flowering of English music during the Renaissance faded in the early 17th century, and, apart from Henry Purcell ((1659-1695), there were no native composers of international stature for almost three hundred years. During the first part of Purcell's career, he composed mainly for the church, but his last ten years were largely devoted to theater music. However, only 'Dido and Aeneas' can be counted an opera, although he wrote five 'semioperas'. These embody many features of the court masque, and the problems of staging for modern audiences mean that England's finest dramatic composer is known,'Dido' apart, largely by his songs, anthems and instrumental music.
'Semi opera' was the term first coined by the English music theorist Roger North to describe the hybrid form, "half-music and half-drama" that flourished in England in the late 17th century. The first of these :'The Prophetess or the History of the Dioclesian' was first performed at London's Dorset Garden Theater in 1690. It tells the story of the rise of the Roman legionary Diocles to become Emperor. It is based on an earlier play by John Fletcher and Phillip Messinger. The adaptaton of the original play inself into a 'semi-opera' consisted of inserting songs and instrumental pieces into the drama at appropriate points.
It is not so unusual to include the music of Handel (1685-1759) on a recording with Purcell, for the English, for the most part, have always considered him, at the least a successor to Purcell, and at the most, actually an Englishman. However, before he ever tread on English soil, Handel had already become a composer of note, and was acquainted with many diverse musical styles. While in Rome around 1707, he composed several cantatas for his patron, the Marchese Francesco Maria Ruspoli. 'Il duello amaroso', dating from August 1708, was probably one of these works. It depicts the 'battle' between the nymph Amarilli and the shepherd Daliso, who attempts in vain to win back the heart of his unfaithful beloved. The cantata, with its sequence of introductory sonata, recitatives, brief 'da capo' arias and duet finale, shows impressively how Handel managed to make the Italian vocal style entirely his own,
This recording made in 1993, is just wonderfully performed! The cantata sung by Michael Chance and Nancy Argenta was extraordinary; each of them showed their usual excellent singing skills; that is beautiful sonorous tone quality, correct emotional investment in their respective roles, flawless diction and it left the listener wishing that the composition was longer!!!! The Dioclesian, mostly instrumental, was performed very well with a nice 'Purcellian lilt' when required, and the tempi just so correct; but one would expect that from Gottfried Von Der Goltz. I am so glad that this disc became available thru the Amazon marketplace, for I would have hated to have missed it.

a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-05-27
The music of Jones, Dowland and and Hume often expressed the pressures of public opinion and changing fashions as well as their highly individual natures. Hume set out to prove that the Gamba could outdo the lute in every respect. Dowland asks why no one has come forth to defend the venerable name of the lute. Jone's specialty was rather the light air and the colourful image. However, at this safe distance of time, we can enjoy the musical diversity of a very creative period without having to take sides in the arguments. Tragicomedia does an excellent job with all of their selections both as soloists and accompanists to two of the best countertenors known to my ears:Michael Chance and David Cordier. Their voices compliment each other in every way both dictionally and tonally; although Cordier has a higher tesitura while Chance is closer to an alto range. Their duets are superbly performed as well as their solos. I especially liked Chance's "Ite Caldi Sospiri" by Jones. This album is truly A Musicall Dreame!!!!

a voice teacher and early music fan.......2005-12-21
Throughout history the lute has been used to accompany the human voice. The art of the lute ayre, like so many English cultural activities,is an eclectic one, for there are many iinfluences in its evolution. These elements basically are: Classical and Bardic recitation, Italian improvisation, and French declamatory metrical forms. The many and varied type selections on this recording testify to all of these characteristics. Some of the composers included are: Campion,Ford,Holborne,Danyel and of course, John Dowland. This disc showcases 2 great musicians who become one in performance. It is as if they could read each others' minds. The perfectly beautiful voice of Chance, who is in his element when he performs songs from this era, complements the technique and sensitivity of Wilson's lute playing. The songs themselves are very entertaining and run the gamut of human emotions. The title song: Sypres Curtain of the Night has to be one of Campion's best! Buy it if you want to sit back and experience an hour of pure pleasure!
