The ROCKIN' STARTS HERE!!.......2004-04-04

This album is the starting point for a shift in style from
their earlier psychedelic stuff to down-home rock! The year is 1970, the Quo had grown their hair long, did away with the acid dippy reverb effects to their music and opted for a harder, twin guitar driven blues approach. And what a catchy batch of songs these are too! After the traditional 12 bar opening of 'Spinning Wheel Blues', you'd think all the band did was mellow down. But no!! Here comes 'Daughter' with a menacing
lead guitar lick and a gritty rythm guitar backing ensemble which then became their signature thrash_a_boogie style! "daughter cant you answer for yoursellllf?" screams the vocals and you cant help but to start swaying to the groove! (april) spring summer and wednesdays" is another gritty dish of seventies hard rock! with a very cool start _ stop power chording style and a tongue in cheek clever chorus> but the absolute standout track on this album is "is it really me" talk about a mean seventies hard rock tune! perfect sountrack song to some grimy long haired bellbottomed gearhead souping up the engine to his nineteen seventy gran torino in his garage as his daisy duked honey is handing him tools and sharing a beer>> aah this is a must get! the perfect new beginning to the quo saga!

a great cd just got better.......2003-12-27

this newest version of the album is now even better than the domestic release of 4 years ago. It has far more bonus tracks.
I kept my us version because it has a few different bonus tracks.
but inspite of that fact , I had to buy this disc for the great bbc tracks and other bonus tracks. ma kellys greasy spoon- was always a great disc. with songs of blues driven intensity mixed with psych rock influences. the most important fact is that this disc is alot of fun as well as a great rockin

feast. I dare anyone to listen to " shy fly" and not crack a huge smile!. quo is still at it today, thankfully rockin on in great cds like heavy traffic. but this is where they significantly changed their style and went on to become the boogie monster group that so many millions love all over the world.

Unsung Psechedelic Gem.......2003-05-26

I have been a fan of (Italian prog-rock outfit) Le Orme for many years, but never realized that they, like many of their British counterparts, also had Beat beginnings. "Ad Gloriam" was really quite a lovely surprise for me. It has some pretty catchy pop tunes clothed in the incense and kaleidoscopic accouterments of the day. Although I have heard many refer to a Traffic influence, I really don't hear it. I think they have more of a Zombies, or a Moody Blues feel in spots, without being too derivative.
There is everything from weird sound effects and exoctic instrumentation, to spoken word interludes, and there is even a track with a little girl reciting a poem to a delicate backdrop of flute and harpsichord. All in Italian, and all highly enjoyable. In sum, a very fun record, and quite different from their power trio prog of the 70's. I highly recommend it. The Akarma reissue is housed in a neat mini-lp gatefold sleeve, with the original artwork, and has 2 bonus tracks.
