Editorial Reviews
The Muffin Men are widely acknowledged as being the keepers of the Frank Zappa flame and in fact have performed with various ex members of Franks band The Mothers Of Invention on numerous occasions. The man who was responsible for forming the band was Rod Gilliard who had first heard the music of Frank Zappa in the late sixties. Rod was so struck by what he heard that he decided to take up the guitar and learn a few chords. Ten years later and Rod found himself in Music College and in the great style of Frank Zappa managed to ruffle a few feathers and upset almost everyone in attendance by performing Stravinsky's Petruska and The Rite Of Spring with a rock band. Suitably impressed with the outcome of this and a growing desire throughout the eighties to play the music of Frank Zappa live culminated in his decision to stage a tribute to the man to celebrate his 50th birthday in 1990 and as a result of the two hour long show The Muffin Men were born. It is fair to say however that the band were actually formed before the term "Tribute Band" was coined and whilst the band pay tribute to Frank Zappa's music they are more than just another tribute band playing their own arrangements of Frank Zappa's music rather than performing it note for note. They also mange to throw in a few Captain Beefheart tunes for good measure as well.
The band also has a link with Frank Zappa's band The Mothers Of Invention and on occasion has performed alongside members of the original Mothers Of Invention. Ike Wills and more frequently the self-proclaimed "Indian Of The Group" Jimmy Carl Black have performed alongside the Muffin Men to wildly enthusiastic audiences. Jimmy Carl Black first appeared with the band in 1993 and has almost become a full time member through his numerous appearances with the band at live concerts.
