Time Out New York
"Hula...can sway like its name would suggest, with a hard to dislike surf guitar sound and sweet harmonies"

Product Description
A perfect pairing with albums from Low, Galaxie 500, Luna, or Chris Isaak.

"Hula just might be the best New York rock band you've never heard of. With the range of Yo La Tengo and the dreaminess of a David Lynch score, they've formed a loyal-at times downright evangelistic-following over the last year." - New York Press

"All of these songs sound like they could have been from a soundtrack of a modern remake of Badlands, or some cooler version of David Lynch's Wild at Heart. Below all this reverb and quiet, however, Hula doesn't forget to throw in the hook. And it's the hook that gets you singing along with these little nightmares and fantasies." - Satellite

"Hula is one of the freshest and most exciting newer NYC bands. They transmit big love from a big heart reminiscent of Galaxie 500 and Low, and the most melodic braids of Sonic Youth." - The Village Voice

5 out of 5 stars Real, hardcore hula.......2003-10-14

Traditional hula, drumming and chants, from one of Waimei's premier modern folk ensembles... Might be a little raw and inaccessible for the casual Hawaiian music fan, but great for the hardcore traditional revivalists.

Though he earned earliest acclaim as a blues traditionalist, Taj Mahal is no purist. Instead, he's an eclectic artist who finds common spirit with the blues in a multicultural array of styles. This album's acoustic arrangements lace the ukuleles, slack and steel guitars of Hawaii (where Taj lived for 15 years) with the airier strains of flute and saxophone and the lilt of the African kalimba. Within this follow-up to 1998's Sacred Island, the music island-hops from the Pacific to the Caribbean, as a blend of reggae and calypso influences highlight "Great Big Boat," "King Edward's Throne," and "African Herbsman." Taj and his Hula Blues band additionally apply their transformational power to a sinuously propulsive rendition of Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower," as well as providing syncopated renewal for traditionals "Black Jack Davy" and "Stagger Lee" plus Mississippi John Hurt's "My Creole Bell." Straying furthest from bedrock blues, the lovely Hawaiian balladry of "Moonlight Lady" shimmers like moonbeams dancing across the ocean ripples. --Don McLeese

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The wistful blues.......2003-10-02

Has Taj Mahal lost it? One might think so after a superficial listen to his latest outing. Closer attending renders a different conclusion.

It's all about the vibe, here--one that, apparently, not everyone can get on board with. How can you have the blues on Hawaii? Or in the Caribbean? Simple. Not everyone is a plantation owner or scuba-diving tourist guide. Read V. S. Naipaul's great book, The Middle Passage, and find out what it means to be a "client culture."

Yes, there's a kind of inanity in much of the lyrics (although a good portion of them are traditional). Yes, this is miles from Mississippi John Hurt (although it contains one of his tunes), let alone Cory Bell or even Muddy Waters.

But you know what? Taj Mahal still works his magic here: The trademark vocal gruffness, esp. manifesting itself at the end of "Blackjack Davey" (easy to see where Captain Beefheart got his basic approach from), the raw edge of his electro-acoustic guitar (which has pretty much replaced his National Steel guitar), the loosy-goosy ensemble playing--all of which is perfectly suited to the island-blues vibe he's evoking here.

I, for one, celebrate this nifty transformation of the blues into an island key. And if you've got big ears, I think you will too.

1 out of 5 stars What a waste.......2003-09-09

I've played it through three times and am going to junk it.
It's [bad] - incredibly repetitive lyrics.
Whatever happened to the real Taj Mahal?
This is the last time I ever pay any attention to a magazine music reviewer. I would definitely like to have my money back.

4 out of 5 stars Island Taj.......2003-07-29

I've been a Taj Mahal fan for over two decades now, and the man never ceases to amaze me with his variety, artistry and creativity. My first initiation to Taj was through his early standard acoustic blues covers and originals, then I followed along as he tried his hand at blues-infused African rhythms, Reggae, Pop, Soul and duets with diverse musicians such as Toumani Diabate and Ry Cooder. This time around Taj combines blues with Hawaiian music and the results are stunning. From the great Hawaiian blues rendition of Dylan's 'All Along the Watchtower', to the hauntingly beautiful Taj Mahal original 'Moonlight Lady', this is some incredible music. There are also some interesting blues standards here given new life with Hawaiian blues flavor, such as Mississippi John Hurt's "My Creole Bell' and the blues standard "Stagger Lee". Overall, this is a very impressive new release by one of blues music's true living legends, Taj Mahal. Highly recommended for fans of Taj, lovers of Hawaiian folk music, or fans of blues music everywhere.

5 out of 5 stars This is great stuff!.......2003-07-06

We were in Kauai for Christmas 2001 and they have kiosks which sell mostly Hawaiian music (slack key, etc) I spotted a Taj Mahal alblum on display and the clerk told me he lived on the island. I had not heard from Taj since the late 60's in San Francisco and was pleased to see he was still around. The clerk demo'ed a German release of this alblum and his Sacred Island alblum. I was blown away. It was the sound track for our two week vacation. My 86 year old father was with us and he loved it too. Sadly, he passed away shortly after our return. I still listen to these two often and remember our time there. Last Monday Taj was at Humphrey's in San Diego and we saw him there. After the show when only a dozen or so people were remaining, he came out and chatted with us. He is so pleasant and unpretentious and talented.

2 out of 5 stars This cd gives the blues..........2003-07-05

This cd gives the blues, but not in the way intended. This is a disappointing cd from a musician who has produced many great works. The music draws from Hawaiian music, but not enough. What comes out is a water down version mixed with a dash of R&B.
The band is not much better in concert. I recently saw them at the Fillmore in SF. They appear to be very good musician, but there is no spark. All the energy was coming from Taj. He had three ukulele players, and this could have been a great opportunity to show mainlanders what a great ukulele musician can do with four strings. But, these musician only played rhythm and mostly the three chords all ukulele students learn in the first lesson, G, F and A. My son and I, the next night, went to a concert of hawaiian music which was excellent by Amy Gillion, Willie K and Makana.
I advise getting Taj Mahal with the Phantom Band or earlier material. If you want hawaiian music visit the international music section at Amazon.com and try some of the musician listed above, or others such as Ohta-San, Sistah Robi, Iz, or many of the excellent slack key guitarist.

After decades as a bluesman, Taj Mahal has earned his place in the pantheon of American music. But this takes him to a slightly different place: Hawaii, where he made his home for a number of years. He's always had a relaxed approach to music, and the Islands must have been a perfect fit for him. But Mahal has also had a long interest in the music of the Caribbean, so it's interesting to hear him adapt Toots's ska classic, "Monkey Man," to his style, on the tropically flavored "Coconut Man." Whatever he tackles, however, the blues is at the basis of everything he does; it's part of his soul now. But there are, as he shows, as many ways to approach the blues as there are bluesmen. His experience and innovation have made Mahal one of the great second (or possibly third) generation blues figures. It's nice to know he hasn't stopped pushing the envelope. --Chris Nickson

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good mix of the blues and hawaiian sounds.......2006-03-11

Taj's island outing is an interesting and relaxing experiment. I've had this cd for awhile and it has turned into an old standby of sorts. One of those cds that never completely blows me away but never dissapoints. It works well on a nice spring day. If you like that island vibe then check out Sacred Island.

I'd even recommend this to Buffet Parrot heads who want a change of pace.

4 out of 5 stars Taj in Charleston.......2005-02-09

Nice to see Taj Mahal in "The Zone". Caught up to him Charleston, SC recently and he did a cut from this album. While the show was great, we could stand to see some NEW stuff from a blues legend. Go Taj!

4 out of 5 stars Nice laidback feel.......2004-02-01

This is an album to listen to when you're just chillin on the couch on a Sunday afternoon - definitely laidback. Taj Mahal combines his blues with a Hawaiian feel. Most of the time it's pretty successful.

The first track is very Tom Waitsish and is among the best on the album. The title track, an instrumental, is as laidback and lazy as it gets. It almost sounds like a lost Billy Vaughan classic. "No Na Mamo" is an interesting song sung in Hawaiian, and it contrasts sharply with the following tune "Mailbox Blues" which is definitely the bluesiest song on the album. The album closes with another instrumental "Kanikapila" which is more upbeat than the title track and is complete with Taj Mahal's yelps and laughs.

Overall, it's a pretty good album that needs to be played while daydreaming about the islands.

4 out of 5 stars More great sounds from an accomplished artist.......2002-06-11

It's not every day you get to experience a new sound from an old friend. Sacred Island by Taj Mahal and the Hula Blues Band is the kind of CD that you want to play again and again. It's catchy rhythyms fused by Tajs love of Hawaiian Music blended together for upbeat arrangements.
Outstanding cuts include "Cocunut Man", "Sacred Island" and the traditional blues offering "Mailbox Blues". Not a bad song in the bunch and the only reason I gave it 4 stars was that it didn't have more tracks. An excellent effort from a master of blues. Stretch out in your favorite lounge chair, grab a cool one and let your mind drift away with Taj Mahal at the wheel

5 out of 5 stars Wow...........loose and easy.......2000-08-19

5 out of 5 stars Almost Perfect!.......2004-08-07

I love this album. There is only one thing about it I don't like. The song "Red, Red Wine" has absolutely nothing to do with luaus, Hawaii, Polynesia or anything tropical. I don't know why they chose to put that on the CD instead of the Hawaii 5-0 Theme Song, Hawaiian Hula Eyes, (Put the Lime in the) Coconut, Day-O (Banana Boat Song), Wipe Out, Limbo Rock, any surfing song or any other song that would be more appropriate. However, all the other songs are wonderful and fitting. It has classics like Aloha Oe, Don Ho's Tiny Bubbles, Elvis' Blue Hawaii and Bali Hai (from the movie "South Pacific"). There are also other well known songs such as Lovely Hula Hands, the Hawaiian War Chant and the Hukilau song. My daughter even recognized a song (Hilo March); she said it's the song they play on SpongeBob Square Pants. Besides those 8, there are another 9 great songs, as well, on this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Shake the Rafters!.......2004-02-26

If you have ever played in a big band (and I have for over thirty years), you will want to listen to track eleven before you listen to another note on this CD. I guarantee that however many times you played "In the Mood", you never heard it like this.

The Big Kahuna slows the tempo WAAAY down, finds chords and passages between the notes that Glenn Miller never thought of and creates a musical mood that will have your honey melting into your arms. Oh yeah, it's THAT kind of good.

Put this CD in your Bose and crank it up.

By the way, a "humuhumu-nukunuku-a-pua-a" is the unofficial Hawaiian state fish, aka, a trigger fish. [See track 12.]

5 out of 5 stars Makes you shake your hula hips.......2002-08-01

"Shake Those Hula Hips" is one of the most orginal albums released in my lifetime. Matt Catingub and his remarkable big band blend the powerful brass of swing, swinging rythym of wartime Hawaii, and soulful lyrics of lounge together and the sound produced is fantastic. You feel as though you're in a dance hall near Pearl Harbor in 1945. The best tracks are "Shake Those Hula Hips" and "My Little Grass Shack". The former, a unique composition by Catingub, is reinforced by his intruiging and powerful vocals. Several of the tracks also include Rosemary Clooney's distinctive voice, which sadly, will never be heard again. "Shake Those Hula Hips" is a must have for any fan of the music genres listed above.

5 out of 5 stars KAHUNA CONQUERS HAWAII.......2002-04-28

Just as he did on his previous CD, HAWAIIAN SWING and with Rosemary Clooney on her album SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY, Da Big Kahuna (Matt Catingub) and his Copa Cat Pack take some familiar songs like "It Don't Mean A Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)" and some lesser known classics like "Ain't No Big Thing"--he shakes and stirs them up with Hawaiian tunes such as "The Princess Poo-poo-ly Has Plenty Papaya" (No, I am NOT making that title up!) adds in a bit of Rosemary Clooney on "And The Angels Sing" and her daughter in law, Debbie Boone, on the Poo-poo-ly number--and comes up with a Big Band a la Hawaii sound that is unbeatable.

Ever wonder what a Big Band would sound like wailing on the theme from "I Dream of Jeannie?" OK, how about "Hawaii Five-O?" The answer is: they sound terrific. So does Da Big Kahuna's arrangement of Peggy Lee's "Fever" and an upbeat version, instead of Sinatra's introspective arrangement, of "It Was A Very Good Year."

Trust me: This album will put a smile on your face. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

        5 out of 5 stars Swingin' haha!!.......2001-06-22

BIG KAHUNA and the Copa Cat Pack is BACK with Shake Those Hula Hips, an album that shakes and stirs the flavors of big band swing, Hawaiian songs, TV themes, Las Vegas lounge, and full-strength party music into a big, tasty, mightily swinging, musical Mai Tai. An artful arranger, masterful saxophonist, hip crooner and animated bandleader, the BIG KAHUNA (aka Matt Catingub) packs fun and excitement into each and every swinging note.

This time around, BIG KAHUNA and the Copa Cat Pack put an indelible swinging stamp on the Duke Ellington classic "It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing), Johnny Mercer's "And The Angels Sing (featuring Rosemary Clooney)" as well as rousing timeless anthems like "Tequila," "Hawaii Five-O" and "Princess Poo-Poo-Ly Has Plenty Papaya (featuring Debby Boone)". So spin this CD, put on your favorite Hawaiian shirt, grab a Mai Tai, and join the par-tay! It's time to Shake Those Hula Hips!
