Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Mod Soul to Groovy Bubblegum Pop and all the rest too !.......2005-06-27

This is a great package and an example of an English band putting out a good soul sound.
This band was one of the first multi racial bands on the scene in England in the fantasic sixties.
The Foundations were the first to have a hit with the timeless and untouchable "Baby Now That I've Found You" in 1967 and that song paved the way for them and others too.
The Foundations were an unusually large group on the scene with 8 members and were also equally unusual with their ethnic make up and a range in age from 19 to 38 .
Four West Indians , three White Londoners and A Sri Lankan .
This diversity contributed to the sound that they made.

Clem Curtis who 38 years later is still going strong has now got a new record single released in 2005 "Stuck In A Wind Up" bw "Move Over Daddy" with Lord Large ..... and yes it's him ! and he was the original lead singer who sang on hits "Baby Now That I've Found You" , "Back On My Feet Again" .
At the suggestion of Sammy Davis JR left the group in 1968 to go solo and he was replaced by a slightly more poppier sounding Colin Young who sang on the smash hit "Build Me Up Buttercup" and "In The Bad Bad OLd Days"

This 3 x CD set contains just about the whole output of the band in the sixties and into the seventies.
CD#1 is all of the debut album "FROM THE FOUNDATIONS" and some other hits and extra songs.
CD#2 is all of their "DIGGING THE FOUNDATIONS" album
with some singles from 1969 and 1970.
CD#3 has Clem Curtis solo tracks , 2 songs from Colin Young / New Foundations and all of the live album "ROCKING THE FOUNDATIONS".

There are some interesting and unexpected surprises on this album.
Those who expect the Motown Soul sound or Pop Soul will be surprised when they hear "New Direction" and "Till Night Brought Day" which are edging on Psychedelia !
Or the Canned Heat Blues Rock sound of "I'm Gonna Be A Rich Man" or a real Down an' Funky instrumental "In The Beginning"

There is a lot to be said for this complitation which has some great soul contained in the three discs it has.
Another interesting thing is the songs that were written by its members. They have an appeal of their own.
The Trombone player Eric Allendale turned out to be a very good song writer and his efforts "Solomon Grundy" and "I Can Feel It" are excellent examples.

The band broke up in 1971 and some members carried on , most obvious were Clem Curtis who came back and formed another Foundations group , Colin Young with a rival Foundations (The New Foundations) and Allan Warner in the Progressive Rock Group Pluto.
This album gives a good serve up on the band in their time as the top soul group in Great Britain.

My picks on the album are "Baby Now That I've Found You" , "Come On Back To Me", "Mr Personality Man" , "Its All right" , "Why Did You Cry" , "Baby I Couldn't See" and "I've Never Found a Girl (To Love Me Like You Do)".
Actually I love the whole album as it is just so good and fun to listen and move to .

5 out of 5 stars Best Place To Spend Your Cash On Early "Quo".......2004-08-01

There must be nearly a dozen Status Quo cd albums featuring these songs from the earliest incarnation of the band ( there's "Early Years", "Psychedelic Years", "Singles Collection", "Down The Dustpipe", "Technicolor Dreams" to name only a few). However, none of the previously mentioned sets are as complete and sound as good as this digitally remastered 60 plus song set. The sonic pleasure of hearing Status Quo morph from a psychedelic, "flower power" band on the beginning of disc one into a kick-@ss, rock n' roll, boogie monster by the end of disc three can not be understated.
This 3 disc set is essential for any Status Quo fan, even if you have similar releases on cd (like me). Sure many of the tracks are already on "Ma Kelly's" & "Dog Of Two Head", but for 20 bucks and three cds so what! Again, to here the transformation of the band over these 3 discs is well worth the cash.
For anyone who has yet to add any Status Quo cds to their collection (shame on you), this is the set to purchase for a retrospective of their early years. If you can afford it, add "Piledriver" & "Hello" to your shopping cart too.
You'll be hooked and end up working your way down the Status Quo Discography on future purchases.

5 out of 5 stars Skimpy liner notes, otherwise.............2004-05-08

Every once in a while you read about ROCK music groups (other than the inevitable Rolling Stones) who have withstood the test of time and have maintained a fairly consistant musical output(AND fanbase!)for 35+ years. A few great ones to mention from good 'ol England are JETHRO TULL, MOODY BLUES, PRETTY THINGS, WISHBONE ASH, URIAH HEEP and in the case here: STATUS QUO.
For the cost of one cd you get a box set of 3 cd's....over 3 and a half hours of music!!!...the complete PYE catalog output.
The only drawback for those that care are the skimpy liner notes. You do get an 11 page cd insert with pix but only about 3 long paragraphs of text, not much I'll admit.
However it's the music that matters eh? How many times do you read the liner notes anyway? What you do get is 63 tracks of mostly psychedelic pop/then hard boogie blues rock. In regards to STATUS QUO the only "off-setting" thing they did at the end of the 60's and early 1970's is completely drop their initial psychedelica and virtually overnight change their sound to usher into the early 1970's. So of 3 cds you get @ 2 cds of vintage 1960's psychedelic and then wham! pow! bam! it's 1 cds worth of ground stomping "boogie blues rock & roll" baby!
Of course if you were playing this all start to finish the different sound might disrupt your "flow" and mess with your head (better change dem drugs, bud), but what the heck? This package is a great deal for the money. Pristine.Primo.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great early Quo.......2005-01-01

This excellent three-disc set perfectly shows the Quo's transition from psychedelic pop of the late 60s to the hard blues and boogie rock that would take them into the 70s and all the way up to the present day. Personally, I like the early Status Quo better, and there's plenty of rarities here for like-minded fans, lots of tracks by the earlier incarnations of the group, Traffic Jam and the Spectres.

There's also enough of the boogie rock here, as well, with disc three totally dedicated to their harder rocking stuff, and disc two bridging the gap.

This is the perfect anthology of Status Quo if you want an overview of their early career, with good liner notes and pictures and a well-presented package. Most people have a definate preference over which version of the band they prefer, though, so if the psychedelia is your thing you might just want to go for the two-disc repackaging of Picturesque Matchstickable Messages instead of getting lumbered with the early 70s stuff, and vice versa for the 70s fans.

Overall, though, an excellent anthology for those who like all parts of the Quo, and an interesting document of their early times.
