For all his tattoos and bulked-up frat-boy persona, singer Bradley Nowell had real soul, which made his fatal heroin overdose even more tragic. There's more to this Long Beach, California, trio's debut, released shortly after Nowell's death in 1996, than white suburban punks imitating Jamaican ska music. The band comes up with great songs, notably the catchy MTV hit "What I Got"; spooky dub-reggae undertones, produced by the Butthole Surfers' Paul Leary, to go with the snappy horns; and surprisingly progressive lyrics that attack sexism and other social ills, especially on "Wrong Way." Like the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Fishbone, obvious forebears, Sublime become slightly tiresome after 17 songs, but the band is great in short doses. --Steve KnopperCustomer Reviews:
Good, but It's pretty overrated.......2007-07-17
Despite the hyperbole, Sublime still is a good album, just overrated. Nothing especially horrible (besides the pointless Ballad of Johnny Butt and the bland Get Ready), just the songs miss the mark. IT also has most of their hits, and those songs lost their originaltly for me a long time ago (though they aren't fully outplayed, but What I Got was never great). I didn't think the music wasn't as complelling, the feel good alternantive that made 40 Oz. To Freedom a joy to listen is sorely lacking in Sublime. The music just isn't as memorable.
On the plus side, the songs aren't horrible, and Bradely Nowell's voice was significantly better, and he can really sing. His singing is best on this album.
Basically, my review was short, but I'm kind of out of things to say, guess that's my point. Now please click not helpful votes and bring down my ranking (ranking is pointless and stupid).

Are you kidding me, what's with this main amazon review?.......2007-05-29
Steve Knoppe is a moron. To begin with, I don't think any real Sublime fan would refer to Bradley Nowell as a "frat boy". "Imitating Jamaican ska music"???? Yea, I don't see how there's "more to this Long Beach, California trio" than that, because that's not what they're doing at all. And wow bro, you really must've gone through this cd heavily if you were able to pick out Wrong Way and What I got! I actually never caught those before, I was too busy listening to the songs everyone in the world knows like Seed and Burritos. "Sublime become slightly tiresome after 17 songs, but the band is great in short doses"... dude, your review became tiresome the second I realized you didn't know what you were talking about.. which was pretty quickly. Who gets tired of Sublime or listens to them in short doses??? I'm done ranting, someone please change this idiots review and get a true fan or someone who has at least listened to the record to review it.

A classic slice of 90's ska punk.......2007-05-01
Recommended tracks: Wrong way, April 29, 1992, Santeria, jailhouse, under my voodoo, what i got reprise
In my opinion this is the best sublime album, the best 90's rock album, and one of the best albums ever........2007-02-28
I still consider this to be their best musical statement. I feel this album truly is "All Killer, no filler" to quote a sum 41 album (don't crucify me please) and every song really stands out on its own. I think a lot of it does have to do with their newfound production on a major label. Ska music is fun, but their isn't much to it in most senses. Bradley's vocals stick out on all his albums, but until this album I found the music to be, well... not as good as his vocals. Crappy production. This album produced by Paul Leary and a team of other producers really brings out the music of Brad, Bud, and especially Eric. Listen to "Let's go Get Stoned" and then check out "Wrong Way" ... no comparison. Wrong Way just explodes out the door. As does every other track. From Paddle Out to Burritos every track is different. Pawn Shop is the only song of its length I listen to. I am ADD to the fullest and that slow simple rhythym keeps me from changing to another track somehow.
I think Heroin does have a lot to do with it. Obvously Brad was hooked on it for a large part of the production of this album and this album shows both sides of its effects. He stated that he was experimenting with the drug to bring him greatness and well... maybe it did. Wrong Way, What I Got, and all the "ska" songs they did sound better than anything they did in the past. So maybe it did help him grow musically. But listen to Garden Grove, Burritos, Under My Voodoo, etc. and you get the feel of the other side of the drug. Robbin' The Hood was the beginning of his experimentation and a lot of those songs are pretty dark and creepy(Steppin' Razor anyone?) but by the time this album dropped in 1996 they were making pretty foreboding music.
It kills me Bradley dies in 1996. I would rather have seen him live than any other other tragic musician like Hendrix, Cobain, etc. It literally crushes me that we only have 3 albums' worth of material. But this album is them at their best. It is the ONLY album I won where I listen to every single song without skipping. No other album comes close. I am a notorious song skipper. This album just has a feel... I can't explain.
Sublime's sound is totally unique. No one ever has, and ever will sound like them. You know this album already, if you haven't heard it in a while buy it. Millions of people already have.

For once, believe the hype.......2007-05-16
This album is the best-reviewed album of 2007. This says alot about the music press and the music world in general...it is rare/nonexistent to see an album from the still rather obscure (I use that word lightly) genre of ambient techno be rated "best album of the year".
As for the album itself, do believe the hype. This album is both listenable and interesting when it comes to hearing what The Field (Axel Willner) can do with the deceptively simpleton beats and bleeps. The album is trance-inducing and well worth your attention.
simple or subtle?.......2007-05-05
Stunning minimal dance debut.......2007-04-16
From Here We Go Sublime is yet another release on the Kompakt label that is nonetheless completely stunning, and for reasons mentioned above, it's difficult to explain why. The debut release from Sweden's Axel Willner, it drifts somewhere between minimal dance music and repetitive ambience, with beats that clomp along fast enough to fuel movement, but with enough ethereal qualities that you could simply put it on and trip out on the couch with it easily enough as well. Essentially, it's trance music of the highest quality, veering completely leftward of the cheeseball Global Underground crowd, and falling somewhere between the work of Kaito (also on the Kompakt label) and Wolfgang Voigt (aka Gas).
Willner actually has a few things in common with micro-sample sculptor Akufen, but instead of trying to wow you with his cutting ability and a frantic hand, he has pulled out hundreds of little heavily melodic snippets and stutters and scatters them across gorgeous expanses, building tracks slowly and letting them peak subtlety. The release opens with "Over The Ice," a single that was released last year to great acclaim, and for good reason. The piece is a perfect introduction to his sound, with micro samples of vocals that flutter over a relentless 4/4 thump, building basslines, and all kinds of subtle spacial effects.
With ten songs running nearly exactly an hour in length, it's also a remarkably consistent release. "Good Things End" is constructed as many other tracks on the release, with jittery vocals samples over a rambling, rolling beat and some sudden bursts of tweaked noise. Even though the aforementioned "Over The Ice" got his foot in the door, there are actually a slew of tracks on From Here We Go Sublime that are even better. "Everday" is a perfect example, again building with spiraling upward beats and slippery programming while bright, overlapping vocal samples push things higher and higher until the stunning ending.
At ten minutes "The Deal" is the longest track on the album, but doesn't feel a bit weary as it pushes forward with devastating low-end bass and sprays of overdriven noise. It's the closest thing to Gas (who was supposedly one of his biggest musical inspirations) on the release, and manages to sound both hazy and clear as day at the same time. An outstanding debut, From Here We Go Sublime is yet another excellent album from the Kompakt this label and a release that has gotten some of the most play of anything I've heard this year. If you like minimal electronic music at all, you must seek it out.

Ska music has been deeply ingrained in the punk rock culture since the Clash adopted their rude boy stance near the end of the British punk invasion and the 2-Tone label put ska on the map. Suddenly, punks stopped kicking the crap out of each other long enough to dance. The debut release by Orange County, California's Sublime is a positively infectious record that marries varied styles of dub, reggae, rap, sampling, scratching, and badass dancehall ska with old-school punk overtones. Musicianship on this record is exceptionally tight, featuring Brad Nowell's innovative guitar work and bright, soulful voice. Packed with 40 oz. of rock (21 tracks) including the ultimate pot-smoking anthem "Smoke Two Joints" and the novelty hit "Date Rape." --Gail WorleyCustomer Reviews:
If I had to take but one CD to an island..........2007-06-12
Sublime was one of the greatest bands of the ninties, if not the greatest ska band of all time.
Truly fantastic, timeless music.......2007-05-19
The variety of music from all out punk, to ska/reggae is fun and all are technically good. Bud and Eric keep the beat going and Brad (RIP!) comes through with some tasty riffs. When I purchased this album I was in grammar school and Sublime was just starting to get on the air. This is my benchmark album to this day. Honestly, I am huge fan of all their work and the self titled album is great. This album however just has soul. No other way to describe it. Be it cruising in my car or kicking back a couple of beers with my friends this album is often played and warmly receipted by everyone.
For anyone who does not own it or is on the fence; worry not. This album is great. I would go through my personal favorites on the album but, I think at some point and time nearly every song was my number one. Now over a decade later the songs I loved are still awesome and the songs I liked I love.
A must buy!!!
Talk about music.......2007-04-11
Yeah, this is ________ music, and that's all. It has a lot for an album. Soul, rebellion, funkiness, rythem, alot. This is one of the best albums I have ever heard in a long time. Not as much as Bloodhound Gang, but this actually _________ exceeded my epectations (Cake failed bigtime).
There is not a bad song on this album, just a couple average songs and a crappy song. THe last track is kind of weak, New Trash more like noise (good thing it's only a minute long), and the Hope cover is _______ compared to the great song from The Descendants. Everything else gets two thumbs up.
OF course though, the musicans are what makes this band _______ awesome. Bud Gaugh's drumming plays second to Bradley Nowell in the music. Bradely Nowell is self explainitory, and his voice is awesome. He can actually sing. Eric has got to be one of the msot underrated bassist yet. Listen to his bass guitar on Date Rape.
If you don't have this album, check it out now. I just discovered it and I can't stop listening to it. Sorry, no new Bloodhound Gang either.
ANd cool cover.

Thank fans for this completist's dream: they petitioned the remaining members of the Sublime, a decade after Bradley Nowell's death by misadventure, to disgorge this collection of rarities, outtakes, and unreleased material. While a little overwhelming in its sheer volume, it deftly illustrates what a compelling shape-shifter Nowell was, even during his most discombobulated and boozy moments. Those unvarnished moments are captured here--taken from backstage parties, live radio shows, and their very first demos--along with some of the bands' more formed moments, whether sharing a stage with Gwen Stefani or being remixed by Long Beach crony Snoop Dogg before he became Top Dogg. Whether channeling the acerbic and fearless sound of Bad Brains (H.R. appears here on a cover of his "Shame in Dem Game"), duplicating the vocal idiosyncrasies and guitar angst of Jimi Hendrix on a song like "Voodoo (Part 2)," or inhabiting the righteous ire of "Catch a Fire" Bob Marley, this collection is a sonic history of a band in the process of becoming one the more seminal purveyors of ska punk, and multiplatinum artists as a result. An evolutionary history, really, this exhaustive collection includes some rather revelatory film footage, including an impish MTV interview prior to their Warped Tour appearance and another one conducted in tandem with Washington, D.C., hardcore avatars Minor Threat. --Jaan UhelszkiCustomer Reviews:

Long Beach garage kings Sublime rode the cresting wave of late-'80s/early-'90s Cali punk to a well-received 1996 major-label debut whose success was overshadowed by tragedy: frontman Brad Nowell died of a heroin overdose just a month before its release. This 1994 album was their freshman indie outing and the record that largely secured their ticket to the majors. Instead of building on the energetic, if formulaic, punk-reggae fusion of their 1992 40 Oz. to Freedom (with its sometimes awkward, too-dumb-to-be-ironic lyrical bent), Robbin' displays a Nowell whose slow evolution as a songwriter is more than compensated by an eager plundering of old-school rap influences and ska beats. It's a record that moves the band beyond often-stultifying punk clichés to a true musical adventure whose buoyant sense of discovery is almost palpable, and one that proves that their '96 big-label breakthrough was no accident. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

There are quite a few songs on the disc so even if you don't love the dubs or other random bits you have an an excellent record on your hands.
Maybe it does take a few listens to get into it, (I admit when I initially hated it,) it's one of those records you might be unimpressed by only to pick up a year later and think its the greatest disc ever (personal story lol) but I guess the best records are the ones that grow on you.
Oh yea and I do listen to the cd regularly but I also would say that if you are new to sublime you should buy the self-titled first, then 40 oz, then robbin the hood, then if your still a fan everything else you can get your hands on.
If your already a sublime fan, BUY THIS ALREADY!

One of the last documents we will see from the great Bradley Nowell........2006-01-16
But it doesn't matter now, does it?
Listening to this cd is the musical equivalent of hanging out at a laid back party, having a beer and a b**g-hit, chillin' with your buddies and groovin' to some sweet music brought to you courtesy Bradley Nowell, one of the greater songwriters of the last twenty years. While it's incredibly rich on atmosphere, Brad doesn't exactly nail it in every song. A lot of the time it sounds as though he's already had more to drink or smoke than you have, but hey, again, it doesn't matter, because these last few records from Sublime will serve as the final documents of a superbly brilliant songwriter, the likes of which we won't see again for some time.
Nowell wrote from the heart and he sang his heart at every step. Few singers have shown themselves to be as emotionally direct or as honest as he had been. He wasn't overly preoccupied with finger pointing or rooting out hypocrites as lesser songwriters are apt to do. He was genuine, and he wasn't afraid to wear it on his sleeve, flaws and all.
Bye, Brad.

"GOLD" SUBLIME.......2007-01-17
I love it! I never get tired of it, and the jacket has a quick biography of the band members, so you learn while you listen.
It's Sublime.......2006-11-10
The reasons I love Sublime music are much more complex than that. I'm not even a stoner anymore! I just love the rhythms and the wide mix of styles. I was introduced to Sublime by my then teen son, who may or may not have been smoking two joints in the morning, night and afternoon, it has not been positively proven.
My favorite song is hard to tell, because there are so many different styles of music here. For pure listening pleasure I like 'Pawn shop'. Bass riffs and a rhythm and blues beat. I love 'Jailhouse' too. At the time I first heard this music, it was "date rape" that my son played for me. I had to admit that this was a positive message song, as well as being terribly funny. I really do love all of the songs on this cd set. There aren't any that I skip over to get to the next song. I admit you can finally have your fill after a few days of exclusive Sublime listening, but hey, nobody else but the Beatles can last for that long in the player before a change.
A great beat and fun to dance to, I give it a 98.
Peace and love to Sublime fans everywhere and most especially to the Bradley Nowell family.

However if you are the other type of fan and are only familiar with the radio hits like What I Got and Santeria, then you should definitly check out this release. It features many great tracks from their first three albums plus one from their 4th release which was a rarities album. Chances are that if you've liked what you have heard before you will enjoy the tracks you haven't as well, and hopefully this music will turn you on to them and make you as big a fan of thier music as I am.
And as mentioned in an earlier review if you go to http://www.sublimearchive.com/home.php you will find a wealth of live and rare Sublime tracks for you downloading pleasure that are 100% free. And down worry, the remaining members of the Sublime family fully support this site and it is totally legal. also featured are many other great bands like Slightly Stoopid and The Ziggens which you should check out. Most posthumous albums are shrouded in a sense of morbid nostalgia and grim curiosity. In Sublime's case, there was also some cruel irony to contend with: the California nuevo-punk outfit's promising self-titled major-label debut and commercial breakout was released barely a month after frontman Brad Nowell's death from a heroin overdose--and their de facto demise. But such was the Long Beach band's longtime following that raiding the vaults, however sparse, was inevitable. Released 18 months after Nowell's death, Second Hand Smoke more than lived up to its title, cobbling together a collection of outtakes from their debut and padding them out with (sometimes multiple) remixes of old tracks like "Doin' Time," "April 29," and the Gwen Stefani duet, "Saw Red." There's a standout cover of Bob Marley's "Trenchtown Rock," but a lot of the rest feels like the incomplete discards and second (or third) choices they obviously were. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

If I had a van I'd probably be playing this album in it. I kid you not, Stand By Your Van has been in my '04 Taurus' CD player for the last 5 months. That's staying power music isn't supposed to have.
There's something magical about this album. I think it has something to do with the band in general. Sublime was a real band. They were underproduced until their final album, and a lot of the stuff they recorded came straight out of their living room. The problem with that is that their earlier stuff had pretty crappy production. It felt like the music was on plastic. And a lot of their later songs, although good, sounded a bit overproduced.
Stand By Your Van is a perfect blend of good production with that authentic sound you can only get live. Bradley Nowell is drunk, the crowd is singing, a lot of the songs have improved parts. I think this is Sublime at their best. Particularly, the first 8 songs on the album - the flow is amazing, and the live sound tops each and every studio recording.
I'm not the biggest Sublime fan. But I can roll to this album anyday. If you want to hear Sublime, get this.

The celebratory spirit behind tribute albums doesn't suit every subject. More than a single swaggering rock star has come off as limp and self-loving, and thoughtful chanteuses have gone sappy or sour--which is why saluting the California garage punks of Sublime makes a lot of sense. For one thing, it's nearly impossible to screw up the collapsed band's sunny, to-hell-with-it vibe--its music is a mood encapsulated--and for another, any artist cool enough to take on one of its songs knows instinctively to embrace the ska sensibility and not skimp on energy. What we get with Look at All the Love, is a party with all the right props. No Doubt was an obvious choice and, on the disc's only live track, "DJ's," Gwen Stefani turns in a mid-speed sway-and-bobber; Jack Johnson chills on "Badfish/Boss DJ"; G. Love goes for funk-rock broke with "Greatest Hits"; and the artful Greyboy Allstars send "Doin Time" to jazz school. A single caveat: Hipsters who followed Sublime in its mid-90s heyday and have since had kids should order tiny earplugs with their copies. Fishbone does an admirable job with "Date Rape," but it's still as profane as ever. --Tammy La GorceAlbum Description
"An impressively diverse cast of musicians from a wide range of genres [show] just how much Sublime's music transcends classification ... nothing short of stellar." - ALL MUSIC GUIDE"Deliciously eclectic." - CMJ
"A tribute to Sublime as big as Bradley Nowell's heart and as expansive as the band's musical vision." - OC WEEKLY
The evening of October 24, 2005 was one very special night in music. The Music Box at Fonda Theater played host to Look at All the Love We Found: A Tribute to Sublime LIVE, a benefit concert to honor and celebrate the legacy of one of most influential bands of the nineties as well as to raise funds for those in need. Artists like Los Lobos, Unwritten Law, Ozomatli, Blackalicious, Fishbone, and The Ziggens came together for one night only to put on a show for the ages. And, to top it off, many of the artists from the evening (as well as some surprise special guests) teamed up to belt out Sublime classics in the ultimate jam session. Now, everyone can relive that magical night with this special CD+DVD combo!
The audio CD contains never-before-heard covers of Sublime hits and fan favorites, from a brand-new studio recording of "Ebin" by The Banned with Chuck D (Public Enemy) to a rockin' live version of Fishbone's "Date Rape." These incredible tracks were not featured on the Look at All the Love We Found CD, and can only be found here!
The DVD features include a performance of "Pawn Shop" with original Sublime member Bud Gaugh on drums, a music video for Fishbone's version of "Date Rape," and backstage interviews with Los Lobos, MURS, Unwritten Law, and more. It also includes an in-depth photo slideshow and a behind-the-scenes look at the all-star jam rehearsal that included Stephen Perkins (Jane's Addiction), Ikey Owens (The Mars Volta), Eric Wilson (Sublime), and many more.

Great mix or Genres.......2007-06-18
Nice sentiment - poor execution.......2006-02-25
If you are a true sublime you'll want to hear this.......2005-12-21
Notable tracks are Jack Johnson's version of Badfish/Boss DJ and Abstract Rude's Waiting for my Ruca. Los Lobos did a great job on Pawn Shop as well.
Decidedly Good.......2005-10-21
The only reason that it's not a 5 is because of the track by No Doubt. Jesus christ I got about 5 seconds into it before I skipped to the next track. What where they thinking?
an albom for the true sublime fans.......2005-10-12
to the fans: this is basically an album of interpretations. each artist shows the listener why sublime is cool to them. it is fun to hear the individual spins each band puts on classic sublime joints. i loved pennywise doing "same in the end". also Los Lobos comes hard on "Pawn Shop".G-Love has a very cool take on one of the most underrated sublime songs "greatest hits". jack johnson comes with a typical jack johnson output, which isnt anything bad.the best is the Ziggens cover of "Paddle Out". the ziggens and sublime; 'nuf said.
overall this album isnt for people who want to hear a sublime cd. those people should all go buy "40 oz." and go kill themselves. its for those who want to hear others tell why they love sublime in song, and pay their respects to the masters of eclectic urban music.im sure bradley is smiling down on those who do.
