5 out of 5 stars My first Durutti Column purchase..this one is a keeper..........2005-03-26

Wow. Someone Else's Party just showed up on my doorstep today. I was captured by Requiem for Mother on Radio Paradise and bought this album on a whim (I trust RP's judgement immensely)...I am VERY happy...I can tell this is going to be one that just keeps spinning and spinning. I am new to Durutti Column/Vini Reilly but can tell that I will be listening to all I can find - this music just completely defies categorization...somebody called it offbeat and trippy - which definitely apply. The guitar playing is just sublime and masterful...and unlike ANYTHING I've heard come out of a chunk of wood and some steel strings before...classical, flamenco, rock influences all around, but blended with clearly virtuoso talent. Wow. This one is special.

5 out of 5 stars Best album I've bought in a year........2004-02-20

I've always enjoyed Durutti Column's music but this album blew my socks off. It's offbeat and pleasant and very trippy. Most of all it is UNIQUE. If you love synth sounds, ambient, darkwave, trance or acid jazz but are sick of Enigma clones or Goth retreads then you owe it to yourself to check this out. Unlike many of the newer bands who sound like they were mixed in a shoebox, TDC is lushly produced and there's not a filler cut on the album. "Blue" sounds like Hendrix sailing on opium... "No More Hurt" has an uptempto club beat with intricate guitar riffs... my fave is "Woman," an addictive tapestry of psychedelic dub. Another stand-out is "Spanish Lament" which incorporates a sampled version of Rebekah Del Rio's vocal extravaganza from David Lynch's "Mulholland Drive" (remember that blessedly warped operatic stage performance?) The worst that can be said for TDC is that some of their riffs are "redundant" (in the same way that David Lynch's or Fellini's soundtracks were) and if you're looking for dancey groove tracks this is definitely not for you. It also is not very Orbity-spacy, more acoustic and lyrical. If you're a Moby or Eno fan, put this at the top of your list. And if you've never heard Durutti before, get ready for a breakthrough.

4 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2004-01-27

Over the years, the name "Durutti Column" has popped up from time to time, but for whatever reason, I never went any further than to recognize the name. I was listening to KCRW "Best of 2003" recently, and among a lot of good stuff was an awesome song with incredible twin guitar interplay and a killer groove. As it turned out, it was "No more hurt" from this CD. After spinning it only a few times, I'm here to tell you this is, indeed one of the best CDs of 2003, and if any of their other CDs even comes close to the quality of this one, this will be the beginning of my Durutti Column collection. If you need any reference points, think Peter Gabriel mixed with "the wind cries Mary" style Jimi Hendrix. I went to pollstar to see if they might be on the road, and they weren't, but interestingly, pollstar cross referenced David Bowie, Bryan Ferry, The Cure and Radiohead. Durutti Column doesn't sound just like any one of these artists, but it's fair to lump them into this genre....whatever genre this is. Get this CD now.

4 out of 5 stars A unique sound.......2003-09-20

    Album Description

Recorded on an 8-track Porta-studio this lovely record coaxes opulent atmospherics out of wierd, homemade sounds. Bass drums made from thumping a book, vocal samples from south America set to Dancehall beats, this inventiveness adds to the richness of Vini Reilly's fantastic guitar sounds & the most personal lyrics of his career. "This is the 1st album that I actually think is worth putting out in the world" -Mr. Vini Reilly

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars (Another) Return of the Durutti Column.......2003-04-28

Most exciting record ever from this group.

A cohesive sound, mixing the best bits from all the previous 24 years worth of albums and singles into a contemporary, hip, current and organic update to the sound. Picking up where Rebellion was only half right, this new effort sees the most singing ever on any album from this group, with Vini picking up most of the load.

What you get are fresh rhythms and drumbeats, signature Vini layered guitar riffs and solid, gloomy lyrics from Mr. Reilly like never before.

When Vini is not singing, as in the amped instant favorites "Spanish Lament" and "Drinking Time," guest singers/samples deliver to a new level of quality and emotion not sustained on most records from the band.

Strange samples on "Woman" again move in directions only hinted at on "Rebellion." The track would have made it to the final cut as part of Moby's "Play," with its edgy beats, crisp bass and acid-tinged vocal samples as well as its crispy attention to the record scratch detail.

In the end, the tracks that really impress are "Requiem for My Mother" and "Goodbye." As the album is dedicated to Vini's mom, he clearly means business, as we are made to feel what he feels, bittersweet, about the the passing of his mother, whom he clearly misses dearly. We hear her on an answering machine and we hear brilliant words sung out about her in a style that Nick Cave would admire and as would no doubt Vini's mother.

It seems simplistic -- but the combination of more vocal tracks, better rhythms throughout and inspiring subject matter -- bring about a whole new level of expression. This from a band whose albums are essentially all '4-5's out of 5' since 1979.

This is the one I've always been waiting for...

      4 out of 5 stars A Nice Album..........2003-04-21

...which continues the epic work from Vini Reilly. Taken individually, DC's work seems like a stanza from a much larger composition. But, when placed together with Reilly's earlier albums (First 4, Domo Arigato, Guitar + Other Machines), Someone Else's Party really shines, in particular the title track. Reilly plays his guitar like no other (save perhaps Johnny Marr), and the production crew has been held-over from the Rebellion sessions.

If you're new to DC, I would suggest Domo Arigato or Sex and Death before SEP, but it would be a nice addition to any collection.
