Although she's not averse to doing new material (she appeared in William Finn's Falsettoland, for instance, and let's not forget that brilliant bomb called Nick and Nora), Faith Prince is a living embodiment of Broadway's golden age. From her star-making turn as Miss Adelaide in the 1992 revival of Guys and Dolls to superb performances in the recent revivals of Little Me and The King and I, Prince always is perfectly attuned to classic material. In this short-lived revival of the 1956 musical Bells Are Ringing (directed by Tina Landau, whose previous musical-directing experience was on Floyd Collins), the singer reprises a role created by Judy Holliday and once again proves her versatility. The duet with Marc Kadisch on "Just in Time" is particularly delicious, doing full justice to that beloved song. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars 1956 recording still wins over 2001.......2006-08-11

I have always loved the 1956 Original Broadway Cast recording. The orchestrations and singers' musical talent and vocal inflections are brilliant. I was thrilled to see that there was a 2001 revival of this play, and looked forward to hearing the score captured with 2001 recording technology. Unfortunately, where the 1956 cast and orchestra shine, the 2001 version is completely without a soul. The 2001 orchestra sounds as though it must have been one of those "orchestra machines" they are using now in some productions-- there is no warmth or artistic interpretation to the music-- just notes being mechanically played off a page (or computer code I guess).

I also didn't understand, as I did in the Broadway Cast recording, why the female lead would have any attraction for the male lead. In the 2001 recording, answering-service girl Ella Peterson works for Jeff Moss's answering service. The short amount of dialog during the song (changed from the 1950's wording) sounds like he is having her cover for him while he juggles his various girlfriends. He sounds patronizing in his delivery. Then she sings a song about how she's fallen in love with this guy? Then later when pursuing her, he just sounds needy and annoyingly shrill instead of the genuine and confident interpretation by Sydney Chaplin in the 1956 recording.

If you want the soundtrack to this wonderful play, I recommend the Original 1956 Cast Recording with Judy Holliday and Sydney Chaplin (more genuine then the movie's Dean Martin in my opinion) playing the two leads. After hearing the 2001 version, the 1956 CD sounds surprisingly rich and stereophonic.

4 out of 5 stars a fine revival.......2003-01-04

BELLS ARE RINGING was brought back to Broadway in 2001, in an ill-fated revival that only lasted a couple of months due to lukewarm notices.

Tony-winner Faith Prince (GUYS AND DOLLS) gives her all in the lead role of hopeless romantic Ella Peterson. The role is virtually owned by the late Judy Holliday, who starred in the original Broadway run and later the under-rated movie version. Prince gives us a fresh new look at Ella, with glowing readings of "It's a Perfect Relationship", "Just in Time" and the still-delicious "The Party's Over".

Marc Kudisch, in the decidedly-wooden role of Jeff Moss, sings wonderfully in his songs including the frenetic "I Met a Girl" and "Long Before I Knew You".

This cast also includes Beth Fowler as Sue and Martin Moran as Sandor, who share the comical duet "Salzburg".

Most of the criticism in this revival was aimed at Tina Landau's direction, and the age of the book which seemed too old-fashioned for 'modern' theatregoers. Still, a great musical and a great recording for fans.

Highly-recommended

3 out of 5 stars Good only if you saw the show........2002-07-18

I loved the revival of the musical. It's classic! It's so funny and charming and unpretentious. But unfortuneately this album displays the musical as dull and lifeless. Faith Prince comes off as overplayed and "kitschy" and Mark Kudisch comes off as bored. When I saw the show neither seemed that way at all. The song "I'm Going Back" brought the house down on Broadway, but I often skip that track when I listen to the cd, I'm sorry to say. Luckily, the big hit from the show "The Party's Over" is still as beautiful as the first time it was written-- and Thank God. It's a good play... a good cast... and has good music! It just comes off as very poor and dull...

4 out of 5 stars Have "Faith" in These Bells.......2002-06-29

Let's face it..."Bells Are Ringing" is hardly a substantive Broadway classic. It's theme is dated, as are its notions of the male/female relationship, and many of its references remain staunchly in the 1950s conventionailty of its genesis. But you know what? These shortcomings are equally some of this shows definite charms. "Bells..." is a quintessential example of the Broadway musical's prime years of the 50s and 60s. It's light, entertaining, funny, hummable, and just plain fun. There's none of the "sterm-and-drang" that would come post-Viet Nam. This new recording, quite frankly, is a vast improvement over the original for one simple reason: the two leads can actually sing. Judy Holliday was a marvel of an actress, and this show was tailored to her abilities, but her raspy voice actually detracted from the cleverness of these songs. And Sidney Chaplin, poor soul, was a hapless singer even at the best of times. This time out, Faith Prince reinvents the role as her own and displays both the musical and comedic flair that make her such a unique presence on the legit stage. If only she received more roles of this stature. Can somebody please tailor a new vehicle worthy of her talents? Mark Kudisch brings a pleasing baritone and an effortless energy to his role, and the two play off one another beautifully on this recording. Although some of these songs have dated somewhat, it's still a thrill to hear them delivered as if they were just composed. Of course, "Just in Time" and "The Party's Over" have justifiable reputations, but there are more goodies behind the hits. "It's a Perfect Relationship", "Hello, Hello There", "Drop a Name" and I'm Going Back" are all lively and delicious musical cotton candy, funny and fun to hear with these performers. What makes this CD so good is that it's one of the best produced original cast recordings in years. The singers sound like they're right next to you, adding to the intimacy and personable nature of their characters. There's none of the bobast and canyon-like distance so typical of the post-Lloyd Webber age. Here, you feel like you're listening to a couple of old chums and you're just aching for them to find each other. Of course, you know they will, but their musical journey is still a hoot. This "Bells Are Ringing" is a simple, direct, joyously ebullient lark from start to finish. It's a great addition to any Broadway collection, and a reminder of why those simple musical-comedy shows were such a treat in their heydey. Enjoy.

1 out of 5 stars SORRY, WRONG NUMBER!.......2002-01-25

Ringing? More like clunking. Way back in '56, Comden and Green sat down and wrote a musical for their chum Judy Holliday. With Jule Stein's help, this trio concocted the classic Bells Are Ringing---a musical marvel about a telephone answering service in New York City. The original recording---recently reissued with bonus tracks by Sony Legacy---is also a classic, and belongs in every show music library. This recording of the recently deceased Broadway revival does not. The music and lyrics are still wonderful and moving and funny, but star Faith Prince is cloying and charmless. Sorry, wrong number.

5 out of 5 stars "this is what Jazz is all about ~ Gerry Mulligan".......2003-06-13

Concord Jazz takes us, the listener back to May 9, 1995 with some of the best jazz around at that time or any other with "Midas Touch:Live in Berlin", featuring Gerry Mulligan. With Mulligan are some high on the list musicians as side men Ted Rosenthal (piano), Dean Johnson (bass), Ron Vincent (drums) ~ and for a very special treat we have Dave Brubeck joining Mulligan in a rare duet outing of "THESE FOOLISH THINGS", two classic guys with jazz running through their veins. Entire album is Mulligan through and through with "WALLFLOWER", "MIDAS LIVES", "NOBLESSE" and "WALKIN' SHOES", one of my all time favorite tunes by the man himself. They'll never be another, but we have labels like Concord Jazz to keep jazz alive and well!

5 out of 5 stars The Best of the Best.......2003-04-16

GERRY MULLIGAN What else can I say. Gerry is such a fine musician that we just come to expect the very best from him and he never lets us down. I love the way he plays that bari. With the smoothness and finese of an alto. His tone is magnificent and I have never heard him play out of tune. No easy task for any sax man. Buy it. You won`t be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars Just When I Thought I Had Hear Gerry's Best.......2003-04-07

This is a wonderful album. Ted Rosenthal on piano is amazing and Gerry had something new going until the very end. The interplay between Gerry and his trio is what you would expect from old friends playing for themselves and the audience is eating it up. What a thrilling final gift from Gerry Mulligan and what a sad world it is that he is gone. If you have ever loved Gerry's work, don't hesitate to buy this one. If you have never heard his work, you are in for a treat -- and you will soon be addicted. Go for the Village Vanguard big band album next.

5 out of 5 stars missing gerry.......2003-04-01

When Gerry Mulligan died several years ago I felt deeply sad and I felt I had lost an older brother. Mulligan was an arranger, composer, and most of all a fabulous musician. The way he cradled that huge baritone sax, which is the size, seemingly of one of those Alpine yodel horns, and created a sound so full and sweet and swinging was and is beautiful, beautiful babe. It is hard to create a sound as beautiful and instantly recognizable as Tommy Dorsey's gorgeous trombone. Gerry did it, just loved to play and played everything from Dixieland to bob with everyone from Astor Piazzolla to Ben Webster. This recording has marvellous sound, marvellous choice of material, marvellous musicianship. We miss you Gerry.

Midas Touch was one of many bands who adopted a strong early Metallica sound into their music, releasing one album during the height of thrash popularity. They disappeared soon after, with vocalist Patrik Wiren eventually appearing in the much different Misery Loves Co.. All in all this is possible one of the worst thrash albums i've ever heard. But seeing how I got it out of a bargain bin for 3$ im happy. Jot this down somewhere, You may just find it in a bin yourself!

5 out of 5 stars GREAT SOUND QUALITY AND FULL VERSIONS.......2004-04-02

The sound quality of this compilation CD is great compared to all others out there for Midnight Star. The extended versions of all the songs are included which also adds to the CD's appeal. These days, it's hard to find a good compilation CD with full length versions in high quality sound. However, I wish they would have used the original album version of Freak-a-zoid (instead of or in addition to the re-mixed version) since it is 8:00 minutes itself thereby qualifying as an extended version. The song Midas Touch in it's extended version here (which I hadn't heard before) offers so much more than the single and was very nicely done with a gerat break beat about half way through.

5 out of 5 stars Great collection........2003-05-05

This is a great collection of some of my favorite Midnight Star songs. This is a much better collection that the domestic 'best of' CD since it contains all the full length jams.

3 out of 5 stars Disregard the earlier reviews of this album........2005-02-15

The information provided by both the professional and customer reviewers for this album does not pertain to this specific title. Although I recommend Distant Light instead of this title, this one features the vocals of Allan Clarke in a similar vein and context to two albums that appeared a few years earlier: the aforementioned Distant Light and Romany.

Clarke's vocal work here is admirable; the group itself appears to have shed its Top Pop radio persona (although The Air That I Breathe did do well on the charts), and offer a more mature and thoughtful collection of tunes.

3 out of 5 stars Hollies made many albums called "Hollies".......2003-08-19

The Hollies made numerous albums titled "Hollies" or "The Hollies".First there was "The Hollies"(their 3rd UK album from 1965,presently availableon EMI/UK CD with both the mono & stereo album on one CD),then there was the 1973 album "Hollies"(including the hit "The Air That I Breathe",available on both U.S. EPIC & UK EMI CD's),then there was a 1985 British L.P. compilation "The Hollies" on EMI/Music For Pleasure(including 1964-66 hits + previously unreleased tracks "Little Bitty Pretty One","Zip a Dee Doo Dah" and a rendition of "Poison Ivy" which is different than the one on the group's Australian debut album). This EMI/MFP compilation later turned up on CD in Australia on EMI 432005-2.However,the CD pictured here on Amazon's website is a 1988 UK EMI/Compacts For Pleasure budget priced CD-only compilation whose unique feature is an accidentally released, rejected, previously unreleased take of the group's 1963 UK single "Searchin'",in which lead singer Allan Clarke growls the lead vocal(as if trying to sound black),and when Graham Nash takes lead vocal on the middle eight of this old Coasters hit,he accidentally sings "Sherlock Holmes and old Sam Sneed...and old Blackie",instead of the correct "Sherlock Holmes and old Sam Spade and old Boston Blackie".As a rarity for avid fans,it warrants Amazon's ... asking price...if they can find it for you.

          5 out of 5 stars Hollies 1974.......2002-12-07

I read the other reviews of this item, and I'm totally lost. I had this on original vinyl and absolutely LOVED it, and some of the tracks mentioned in the first review did NOT exist on the original LP, which was correctly issued in 1974. I consider this LP to be one of the best the Hollies ever did, as it showcased the musical style they developed far better than most of their previous work, which sometimes included covers of other persons' material. True, it's not the stuff one may expect, if they consistantly think of the Hollies as doing only songs like Stop, Stop, Stop, or Carrie Anne, but I doubt anyone could honestly say this LP/CD is not one of their best.

          4 out of 5 stars You're Both Wrong.......2002-10-02

This is neither a reunion LP or a reissue of the 1965 album/ This is compilation CD based on a 1987 cassette release on tyHour of Pleasure series. I have it, the cover matches the picture and the track list set forth above is accurate. Don't be misled.

Kusically. it's a mixed back of singles, B-sides, album cuts and EP tracks, with a few cignificant hits and a bunch of early covers. A real smorgasbord.

When, oh when will someone come out with a definitive box set for this group? The three disc set is out of print, and you have to find what you can where you can in a piecemeal fashion...like this.

5 out of 5 stars Pop power from 1974.......2001-09-10

Amazon's review is wrong; this 1974 LP often gets confused with their 1965 LP, mainly because they are both simply titled "Hollies". This one is the band's reunion LP with Allan Clarke, and is one of their best from the '70s, with delightful tunes such "Falling Calling" and "Down on the Run", both featuring harmonica. Why this LP only generated one hit, "The Air that I Breathe" is a mystery; everything here is equally commercial-sounding. Unfortunately, the happy atmosphere here was short-lived, as the albums that followed were workmanlike affairs, with a general lack of musical direction. No matter; The Hollies are one of the great pop bands, and this is one of their best moments.
