    4 out of 5 stars Historic Ragtime.......2001-03-31

Charles Thompson was a contemporary of Jelly Roll Morton and James P. Johnson, and was one of the leading figues of the second generation of St. Louis ragtime pianists.

This album, made up of live recordings from the early 1960s, finds Thompson in reasonable form, playing some of his best known pieces plus a few standards. His powers had declined a little from his 1948-49 American Music recordings, but he was still able to play in an entertaining fashion. Many of the performances are rather short, but these are historic recordings by a little known but important figue in ragtime.

Delmark is to be commended for this release: let's hope they re-issue the rest of the Euphonic back catalogue. Anyone interested in ragtime and early jazz should consider buying this CD.

    Album Description

Originally released in November 1983, this Top 20 album was Toyah's last album for the indie label Safari before signing to CBS. Featuring the hit singles 'Rebel Run' and The Vow', this CD issue adds the big non-album hit 'Be Loud, Be Proud (Be Heard)' for the first time. The remaining bonus tracks were singles b-sides, and all appear on the CD for the first time. Annotated by an acknowledged Toyah authority. Edsel. 2005.

5 out of 5 stars The third in the trilogy. Toyah's undeserved commercial decline.......2006-08-27

After Toyah's 1981 album, 'Anthem', made her a household name in the UK, she returned with a bold and exciting album 'The Changeling'. Though it charted in the UK Top 10, and the one single released from the album achieved a modest chart placing, the tide was turning for Toyah's brief taste of commercial fame. 1983 saw the release of the final album with long time collaborator Joel Bogen, resulting in the excellent album 'Love Is The Law'. Sadly, the public interest was dwindling, and the album soon faded into obscurity, though remained a fan favorite over the years. The reason for the relative commercial failure certainly had nothing to do with quality of song writing. If anything, 'Love Is The Law' was more pop than 'The Changeling', and maybe even 'Anthem'.

There were two singles released from 'Love Is The Law'. The first was the very poppy and keyboard-heavy "Rebel Run". Though the song achieved a modest chart placing, I view it as the weakest song on the album. The far superior follow up single, "The Vow", is a beautiful ballad that had "hit" written all over it, though it only managed a brief, low chart placing.
The rest of the album continues with a combination of pop, "Time is ours", ballads, "Martian Cowboy", and gothic influence, "Rebel of love" and "I Explode", all succeeding very well.

Fans petitioned for a long time to get Connoisseur Collection, then reverting back to the original name, Safari, to release 'Love Is The Law' on CD. Safari did not see the demand, and felt their reissue sales of 'Anthem' and 'The Changeling' were not enough to warrant this reissue. Thankfully, Edsel came in to fill that void by licensing 'Love Is The Law' for release.

In keeping with the spirit of the previous reissues, 'Love Is The Law' contains 5 bonus tracks from period single A and B sides, all of which are great songs.

The CD was drawn completely from master tapes, though a couple of minor glitches are present. The first is that "I Explode" and "Rebel of love" are supposed to cut together, though on the CD "I Explode" ends abruptly with a nasty click, followed by a couple seconds of silence before "Rebel of love". Also, there is a minor bit of sound cut from the beginning of "Time is ours". Lastly, the first five songs seem to have excessive tape hiss and a bit too much treble. Again, these are very minor issues with an otherwise very satisfying release.

The CD booklet contains all of the lyrics and lots or rare period photos, as well as detailed liner notes - some supplied by Toyah herself.

'Love Is The Law' was the end of Toyah's partnership with co-writer Joel Bogen. Unfortunately, it spelled the end of the best of her music. While Toyah has managed to create some amazing material over the years with other collaborators, no particular album ever satisfied to the same level as the Safari-era recordings. Toyah without Joel is like Siouxsie without Severin - only half as good.

4 out of 5 stars A very good Toyah album (more like 3 1/2 stars).......2005-12-31

The original Love is the Law consists of the first 10 tracks on this CD, with the additional tracks being bonus materials. This album parallels Anthem, with a mixture of truly marvelous mid-slow tempo pieces (Broken Diamonds, and the astounding Martian Cowboy (with its sci-fi romantic leanings)) and harder stuff like Rebel Run. The production on LITL lacks some of the multi-layering and quirky Toyah-isms of previous outings, leaning more toward pop-rock (with drum machine backgrounds). The Vow ends the original LITL, a lovely lush throwback ballad that has some of the old magic back.

So, what's missing? Toyah's intensity and inventiveness isn't up to her previous releases. The cover art makes her look rather manish.

In Summary: If you want a more mellow outing and are generally a Toyah fan, you'll probably like this, too.

5 out of 5 stars Really good group.......2005-06-30

This is a refreshing pop/rock/drama group, hi energy, good music, good lyrics.

5 out of 5 stars The Album that should have made them known in your suburb.......2005-09-21

If you were to play a few albums defining American New Wave in the 1980's LOVE IS THE LAW could be the definitive one.
The cover itself is beautiful and verrry cool.
"Love Is The Law" is one of the 80's should-have-been-biggest songs. It's soo damn infectious!
"Rattle My Bones" was recently re-recorded by the group for a Target ad and it's not hard to gauge why.
It's one of their catchiest numbers as well as get your attention from the beginning.
"Monster Man", "Perfect Communist" and "Rainy Day" are Ferryesque
      new wave classics.
Buy this album if only for the title track, "Rainy Day" and "Perfect Communist".
The Suburbs deserve to mentioned in the same breath as The Replacements, Prince and Husker Du when mentioning
      Minneapolis' finest!

4 out of 5 stars I saw the Suburbs back in1985..........2005-08-07

at the student union in Iowa City, Iowa. I was in the 8th grade and it was my first concert. I have seen a lot of concerts since then, but none of them echoed so loudly as that show. 'Love is the Law' is okay. Its kind of simple stuff. But some of that simple stuff is really great. The funny thing is, the best Suburbs album was their last one that came out in '86. I can't find that one anywhere.

5 out of 5 stars A true classic... available again!!!.......2004-03-16

Back in the early 80s, this gem found its way into the vinyl racks for about, oh..... five minutes! Then Mercury dumped the band. They made one more album and imploded. I saw the Suburbs live twice. The first time was as an opening act for Iggy Pop at a small club in Madison, Wisconsin. The second time was as they were winding their way back thru the west at a little bar in Greeley, Colorado. Both shows were fine, but what I will always remember the band for is a post-gig discussion I had with a kind and personable Blaine John Chaney, and one of the finest rock records ever recorded: LOVE IS THE LAW. Everything came together on this album. The band is hot. The tunes are great. The production is supurb. This album is easily one of the finest examples of American music in the 80s. It's a great thrill to find out it has been released on CD. I can now retire my worn out vinyl.

      4 out of 5 stars Heck, it's a great album.......2003-09-20

But if you're reading this review, you probably didn't get here by accident. Several great songs on here that you won't find on the compilations and 'best of' albums, like 'crazy job' and 'hell a'.

      5 out of 5 stars A Must Have.......2003-02-25

This album was my favorite when I was probably 5 years old. I always made my Dad listen to it. I found it on vinyl recently and gave it a listen. I remembered every song! It is one of the albums that you can listen to every song without skipping any. Very solid, and personally my favorite of all of their albums.

              1 out of 5 stars Terrible!!!!.......2007-07-03

I don't know of any band in the industrial scene who is more flip floppy than Mentalo & The Fixer. When this band makes a good album it's really good, and when they make a bad album it's really, really, bad. This album...sucks!! It really, really, really sucks. Don't bother.

5 out of 5 stars It Does Not Keep Account of the Injury - Love is the Law.......2004-01-17

Mentallo and the Fixer are one of those bands that are unpredictable in their own right. Sometimes they drop albums that seem to be the penultimate creation and sometimes they drop albums that simply don't want to sink into the skin. When I first found one of their creations I was overcome with it, finding the a song on a Metropolis sampler and then needing to go out and claim one of their works, and that's actually lead to the acquisition of a range of experiences. And that's because they like to experiment, making strange creations that they can be proud of, and not really adopting any formula other than the creation of electronica. I've actually acquired quite a few of their albums because of that fact, too, supporting them as they explore the little fixations that occupy them at the time because they like to poke and prod and try on different fits while trying to get the audio combinations right.

I think the best way to describe Love is the Law is to call it "the art of structure noise" because it feeds on so many types of sounds swirling in the fog of electronics. Sometimes that means that the beat is layered in a distorted sonic abyss, pushing out an undercurrent of electronica and heavy-hitting noise, and other times it reminds me of a sonic curtain being dropped on my ears that is drenched in feedback and sampled loops. It has its critics, too, saying that some of it is uninspired and that it perhaps drew from a few places on its way to inspiration. I agree that I can hear some bands in what they made, too, with Frontline Assembly coming to mind for "the Thousand Points of Light (Track 6) and Skinny Puppy sticking out on "Exit" (track 5). Still, its so much more than the generic copycat label those comparisons seem to imply. Some of the songs within it are truly odd combinations of feedback and bongos, industrial creations and drum n bass aftereffects, not to mention a little voxing here and there just to keep the topics fresh. I personally liked the sound of bagpipes and a heavy beat mingling on "Vessel" (Track 2), and I enjoyed the beat as it was picking up momentum and building up in the formation of Novacaine (Track 4). There were also the somewhat trippy sounds that built through "Zealot" (Track 10) and continued into "Truth be Told" (Track 11). And that's really only an attempt at describing what is combined into only the musical components of the songs. The vocals are pretty good, too, with almost every piece voxed except for one or two.

If you're thinking of picking up Mentallo and the Fixer, you'll either love it or you'll hate it. I've rarely met someone standing on the middle grounds of fandom, and with good reason. Still, I think that giving this a chance will allow you to see the complexity in it, and giving it a few spins will allow it to grow on you. You can always listen to samples provided here to make that step, too, or you can go to Metropolis and pick up a little sonic combo meal to see if they fit you.

4 out of 5 stars Last? but not Least!.......2000-05-19

After Mentallo's last release, Algorythum, alot of people were angry and dissapointed, stating how it was dull, slow, and uninspired. Well, I personally loved Algorythum, and I love 'Love is the Law' as well, and I think alot of Mentallo's fans will like it, for this album goes back to what mentallo fans know and love. This album for the most part is very hard and beat oriented. The rhythms and noise foundations take a front seat to the melody. Like every Mentallo release there is unique melodic structures that weave in and out of the soundscape, and this release is no different. There are alot of cool effects on this release, a lot of sound panning to bring the weird noises on this album to the forefront. Gary Dassing achieved a balance between old familiar mentallo song structures with new ones. The best examples of this are songs like Vessel, Lawless, and Novacaine. Songs that should appeal to old fans are songs like Consequential, Murderers Among Us, Exit, and the Thousand Points of Light. All very good trax! One of my personal favorites on this album is the title track which serves as the album closer. This song is simply an amazing, powerfully written song! This album really runs the whole spectrum of what Mentallo's music is known for, while introducing new elements. Will this be the last release for Mentallo? I don't know, but never say never! If it is, it will be a good closure to a long and prosperous career. Mentallo & the Fixer's impact on the industrial scene is unquestionable, may they go down in industrial history! Love is the Law!
