5 out of 5 stars One of the best video game soundtracks out there........2007-07-02

This may be one of the best video game soundtracks out there. It even has the mall music from the game. Only thing I didn't get was that Gone Guru wasn't on this soundtrack. Every other song is but that one. Ah well. Good soundtrack anyway.

Some look into the face of American popular culture and see the deep dark abyss of lowest-common-denominator commercialism. Tokyo duo Pizzicato Five, however, peer stateside and see the sparkling disco-ball inferno of souped-up drag-race hyper-enthusiasm, a kitschy retro-futurist youthquake, and a high-fashion, heavy-plastic glob of fun. The ever-changing group masterminded by Warhol-wannabe Yasuharu Konishi and fronted by Twiggy-disciple Maki Nomiya has borrowed, sampled, and stolen its way through an irresistible melange of Esquivel's bossa nova cocktail swing ("Rock and Roll"), Bacharach's jazz pop ("Fortune Cookie"), chewy psychedelic bubblegum ("Strawberry Sleighride"), cartoonish Jackson Five Motown ("Happy Sad"), and Dee-Lite's frenetic disco house music ("The Night Is Still Young"). --Roni Sarig

4 out of 5 stars I'm feelin' so happy sad.......2005-05-05

Never can it be said that Pizzicato Five doesn't have fun with their music. In "The Sound of Music," this Japanese band revels in glitzy sound and poppy melodies. Dancey, sparkly, plastic, sugary and enchantingly earnest, this is kitschy pop at its most entertaining.

After a brief intro with children singing about how they love "P. 5, oh yes we do," the band launches into the thoroughly danceable (and ill-named) "Rock'n'Roll," an infectious little song that would be maddening if it weren't so much fun, and so darn cute.

To judge from "Sound of Music," Pizzicato Five seem to be cheerfully cannibalizing various popular American music periods: There's a disco tune, a bit of bossa nova, bouncy funk, jazz, dance, and bubblegum pop that refuses to be serious about anything. A few -- like the conversation-filled "Groupie" -- are somewhat less charming, but it's hard not to be charmed by the repeated sentiment of "If I were a groupie..."

Pizzicato Five made music for years before "Sound of Music" started to capture American listeners. It's amazing that these guys didn't get attention before that. Rather than the wild experiments of Cornelius and Buffalo Daughter, Pizzicato Five are out to enjoy themselves (okay, they experiment once or twice). And they do so with great gusto -- the entire album sounds like a party where nobody cares what's cool, only what's fun.

Perhaps one of the most entertaining things about "Sound of Music" is that the band does absolutely nothing halfway. If the music is jazz, it drips jazz from every note. If it's dance, the tempo is mad. If they inject weird sound effects, it sounds like a haunted house. Synth, keyboard, wild drums and samples add to the fun, colorful maelstrom.

For anyone who doesn't speak Japanese: Most of the lyrics won't make any sense at all, despite the odd English word ("groovy!") thrown in. "Happy Sad" is one of the exceptions, with a the upbeat question "shoop-e-doop-e-doop/happy sad/are you feelin'/are you feelin' bad?/Happy sad..."

Pizzicato Five enchants in "The Sound of Music," a delightfully unpretentious album that tries out just about every variety of pop there is. The hills are alive!

4 out of 5 stars good Pi 5 release.......2003-06-17

I like this album for listening in the car when I am driving. There are some slow parts on this one that I wish that weren't there ^mainly rock and roll^.

My favorites on here are The Night is Still Young; Happy Sad; CDJ; Peace Music (actually St. Etienne Remix); Strawberry Sleighride; and Airplace. The biggest problem that friends have with this CD is the fact that there are only a few English songs on here. I reccomend that you get Happy End of the World if you want an Pizzicato Five release with english on it. For those of you who do like to listen to Japanese music, this one is a good one for the collection. Although I won't say that it is a must have.

5 out of 5 stars Your friends will think you're weird..........2002-07-27

...if they're anything like mine. Peer pressure notwithstanding, Pizzicato Five have a great sound, and some of these tracks really are excellent. Rock n' Roll and Strawberry Sleighride specifically, are some of the most pleasant and mellow tracks I've come across in a long time, and I listen to pretty much anything from Classical to Rock.
Twiggy Twiggy attracted me to the P-5, and this CD has made me a fan of the band. Their sound is both unique and classic mainstream at the same time (reminds me of USSR-era Russian pop music), that not everyone might like or understand. But then again, just because a band is widely accepted, doesn't mean they're worth their salt - just look at N-sync.

4 out of 5 stars One of the best P-5 CD's.......2002-01-05

There are some songs that remind me of my dysfunctional self. I love it. Just remember that before you buy that the CD is mostly Japanese.

3 out of 5 stars Only for the P Fi collector.......2001-11-05

I liked the album, don't get me wrong. But if this had been the first Pizzicato Five album I had heard, I would've never purchased more. All in all, not as good as 5th release or Happy End of the World (the only two I have for comparison).

1 out of 5 stars Be Warned.......2005-07-16

This is the most painfull listen I have ever experienced. I want anyone who may be thinking about buying this CD to know that the Korean Horn sample is played repeatedly for the entire duration of the track. This music reminds me of how I feel when my thought process is at it worst.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best albums ever.......2005-06-21

I would put this in my top 10 (maybe my top 5?) albums of all time. Certainly, my favorite Otomo Yoshihide album. For half the album, you just hear this wailing flute-ish middle-eastern sounding sample that pulses between the two speakers. You fall into a trance. Then, at the halfway mark, all these instruments come in and it's like nothing you've ever heard. I once heard a story that I'm pretty sure is wrong:

After this performance the band decided to break up because they thought they could never play anything as good as that again.

This is probably not true, but you'd think it was from the music.

This is the first of his albums I've listened to, but still my favorite. If you like Miles Electric, NoWave/Noise, freejazz, I.D.M., experimental or other odd music, YOU WILL LIke this.

Ornette Coleman and Lightning Bolt got married, and this was their child.

5 out of 5 stars Full Stop.......2005-02-01

Can't think of a more sustained period of tension in any piece of music than the opening "duck call" samples. You know the storm's coming. There's the odd thunder-crack of turntable wreckage as the air thickens and thickens. Heaven and hell break loose. Staggering stuff.

Feels like drinking lava and mercury for 40 minutes. Through a straw.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2004-01-27

I would agree with the other reviewer that this is simply one of the greatest pieces of music ever. A review can really not justly describe the strange yet awe-inspiring piece of music that is Consume Red. Even if you do not usually delve into experimental music, this will convert you into the wonderful musical world of Otomo Yoshihide and others.

5 out of 5 stars WOW........1998-06-17

The best album of the year, of the decade, of ever. The sample of Korean horn player Kim Suk Chul is awe-inspiring, and Ground Zero constucts an epic-length piece around this ear-shattering sound.

    5 out of 5 stars Beautiful stuff.......2001-06-24

This is as jazzy as I've heard Otomo Yoshihide get. Nevermind that a couple of the tracks are by Dolphy -- this reminds me more of Ornette Coleman circa 1968, passionate, dark, and challenging. Some other reviewer makes a glib remark to the effect of "What's that noise;" he's referring to Sachiko M. of Ground Zero, who provides a sine wave drone on a few of the compositions. Admittedly, the high pitched tones stand out a little too much on the first cut, seem more of a distraction than a compliment -- but I guess Otomo wasn't fully prepared to leave the realm of noise entirely behind him here. It's a great disc anyhow; fans of Ground-Zero will love it, but also fans of more "conventional" free jazz. Tsugami Kenta, on alto sax, and Kikuchi Naruyoshi, on tenor sax, are the predominant players here; Otomo's guitar and samplings are more a matter of background support. I assume this is the same Kikuchi who provides the big Ayleresque sounds on GROUND ZERO PLAYS STANDARDS -- which is essential stuff from Otomo, if you don't know it. FLUTTER will make any fans of avant jazz happy.

4 out of 5 stars Dolphy with inner ear disturbance.......2001-05-31

Mingus and Dolphy arrangements, but...what's that noise? Is that the refrigerator? Did somebody forget to turn down their hearing aid? Assymetric jazz + piercing electronic jabber = ?

5 out of 5 stars Pretty Little Lily Can Dance No More.......2004-07-01

      13 minutes of pure gold!

Sure, $30 does seem a little steep for such a short album (it is a single), but the songs are well worth it.

The song titles are as follows:

      1. Pretty Little Lilly Can Dance No More - 2:20
      2. Daddy Goes Out Jail - 3:18
      3. Oh! Baby - 2:16
      4. Space Rock-Part 1 - 5:27

The 5.6.7.8's have a great vintage rock and roll sound that incorporates adorable Japanese vocals. The musicianship is great, recreating catchy '50's style jukebox rock with fun to sing a long backing vocals.

The first track kind of reminded me of The Who in their earlier years, where "Daddy Goes Out Jail" is more of a boogie song that you'd kick your socks off and dance along to. The third song slows things down just a little bit while the singer croons out a love song. The last tune doesn't have any words, but some wicked organ playing.

The package design is beautiful and reads mostly in Japanese.

At first, I was dssappointed that it was such a short disc for what I paid, but it's one of those albums that you can just stick on repeat for over an hour and not want to listen to anything else.

Overall, I highly recommend these songs, but try to see if you can find them on a full length rather than dishing out the dough for this one.

4 out of 5 stars We Got A Good Thing Going.......2003-10-31

Too many revues have likened the 5.6.7.8's to a cross between the Shags and, I dunno, some second-tier punk band. The 5.6.7.8's are better than that. What the they really sound like, in their song selection and delivery, is the old tapes of the pre-Beatlemania Beatles playing at Hamburg nightclubs.

Like everybody else in the U.S. I first came across the 5.6.7.8's in KILL BILL and thought they were fascinating. Their mastery of the English language is questionable and the drumming on this record is lightyears behind that in the film, but they know how to chug on this package of flat out rockers.

"Pretty Little Lily Can Dance No More" (pronounced on this version 'pwiddy canna danza nawmowa') barrels along like gangbusters, and "Daddy Goes Out Jail" has a nice Carl Perkins-like guitar solo. "Oh! Baby" tries to sound smooth but ends up kicking some tail and "Space Rock" is a flat-out ripoff of the old Stones instrumental "2120 South Michigan Avenue."

Good stuff which can only be played LOUD!
