Product Description
Signed to Peter Gabriel's PRE label, Sizer Barker sound like a British more tuneful Beck, a joyful Lou Reed, a beat up Bowie, and Moby meets Coldplay. With songs and lyrics, inspired by life, love and random words and phrases from magazines. They display the pop sensibility that seems inbred for Liverpudlians ever since the Four became Fab. '..this is a strange and wonderful band. The only thing that youre sure of is that it sounds brilliant.' - NME, 'A superb 40 minute set proves the album is to be no one-off.' Sizer Barkers sound is a wonderful, idiosyncratic thing.' - The Guardian, 'Rolling, caressing melody brushed with keyboard electronica, tender guitars, languid male vocals and an intangible melancholy..its warm and comforting as teatime casserole.' - Time Out. EMI. 2004.
Enter Sizer Barker... quirky yet melodic, lush yet simple, retro yet modern, light yet dark, aloof yet present.... this British pop band shows that some folks still know how to craft good tunes. It's all there, tight harmonies, guitar hooks to die for... hailing from Liverpool (is it something in the water there?) songwriter and singer Carl Brown sounds to me like a cross between John Lennon and Elvis Costello and he seems to be just as tuneful, (I almost have to stop myself from trying to turn the CD over to play side B a' la my fav LPs) But don't get me wrong, this is no Beatles wanna-be-band. Although the melodic sensibility and playfulness are there in spades, there's still a uniqe stamp, and you'll find yourself waking up with a tune in your head. If you've forgotten how you felt before you burned out on "Rubber Soul" or "Sgt. Pepper" give this a try, meanwhile I'll be getting by with a little help from my friends, Sizer Barker. (...now if only radio programmers would get a clue)
P.S. For a taste, the entire album is streaming on the band's web site, though in sufficent enough Lo-Fi to entice you to buy the record, you can tell it's immaculately produced. (You need a DSL connection to listen in) Hopefully, this record will soon become more availiable stateside. Go to http://prerecords.co.uk/sizerbarker/
