Editorial Reviews

Product Description
Leigh Williams is a technically brilliant guitarist. His debut solo CD, Absolute Zero, is an instrumental tour de force. If you love fast and flashy guitar playing, then you’ll definitely love this album. Every track puts Williams’ playing front and center for your listening pleasure. You can’t help but sit spellbound as he flies all over the fretboard. Williams’ back-up band is nothing less than stellar. This isn’t surprising since they’re all from Steve Vai’s band: Virgil Donati plays drums while Mike Keneally handles the various keyboards and Phillip Bynoe lays down the wonderful bass parts. Produced by Neil Citron. Rock Empire. 2005.

Album Description

Absolute Zero, the spirited collaboration between Enrique James (bass) and keyboards/vocalist Aislinn Quinn, is a post Canterbury (Soft Machine, Hatfields, Caravan) mixed with Rock In Opposition (Henry Cow, Art Bears, Universe Zero) suffused with Teutonic precision and obsessive repetition. Joined by drummer Pip Pyle (late of alternative super groups Deliver, Gong, Hatfield, North, and National Health) Crashing Icons offers a full album of what New England Performer called "Epic, enthralling, edgy, twisted, and unique" music.

5 out of 5 stars Musica Sin Cadenas.......2003-12-15

5 out of 5 stars The return of "heavy" music.......2003-12-14

It's hard to describe this music, but I'll try. Hard driven, supersonic (but not speed metal garbage), political, angry, mature, smart, incredibly complex, musician's music in every sense of the word (more complex than most "classical" music, except maybe Xenakis), wall of sound, henry cow and gong are pussies music, in your face for not caring about anything, directed and controlled with moments of freeflowing and uncountable rhythms. Finally here is something worth listening to. You may not like it at first listen but you'll love it after two. Deep lyrics and thoughtful concepts (but I don't think it's a concept album--hmmm, maybe I need to listen again to make sure of that). The bass playing is just ungodly--I've never heard a bass this thunderous and at the same time complex--Enrique Jardines is a freak of nature. Pip Pyle has been awakened from his slumber and discovered that he still is a fantastic drummer, he just needed someone to kick him in the ass. Now he's kicking back--and taking his anger out on his poor old kit. His best drumming ever, and that's saying a lot considering his career. Playing like this he'd better be the best drummer of the year in any drumming magazine. Aislinn seems to weave in and out like a tornado that keeps going back and forth over the same town. Sometimes she's there singing in her oddly compelling and very awakened voice, sometimes she attacks with her keyboards. All in all this may be the best truly cutting-edge album in the last couple of years. Based on their history you should see the followup to this one in about 2013. Now I'm gonna go and celebrate a great CD release by listening over and over until my neighbor yells at me. Oh yeah, if you play drums, bass, or keys this is THE must have album of the year because even if you don't like it, you'll learn a whole lot from it. The cool fold out poster is fantastic too.

5 out of 5 stars Music is a Revolution.......2003-12-13

According to Absolute Zero, 'Music is a Revolution', and the band has sought to champion the cause of forward thinking ideas and sounds through their unique brand of controlled mayhem. While sharing similar ideals with the original Rock in Opposition movement, Absolute Zero's music stands as a reactionary force to the overwhelmingly stagnant state of most music today. Drawing from a pool of influences, the band combines the complexity of 20th Century Classical music composition and improvisational freedom of Jazz without losing sight of the radical elements born from the birth of rock and roll. Imagine the dissonance of Henry Cow filtered through a postmodern aggressiveness.

Repetitive and distorted bass lines and forceful percussion (courtesy of Canterbury legend Pip Pyle, who you've never heard like this before) underscore an almost Koenji Hyakkei-esque Zeuhl element at times, while abstract vocal and keyboard melodies dance through dissonant passages, providing a lighter balance to the overpowering rhythmic force. A unique use of modern technology, sounds are processed to biting, industrial timbres that accentuate the immediacy of the music, with the occasional blast of trumpet and tinny, spiky digital keys. The extended length of the songs is the perfect breeding ground for the dark and foreboding passages that slowly simmer and explode, bent on exploring a new direction.

Absolute Zero's uncompromising vision has unfortunately never allowed the release of their music to come to complete fruition. Nearly ten years in the making, Crashing Icons is a triumph of individual thinking and free spirit yearning for a chance of free expression, and this artistic tension shines through the music.

5 out of 5 stars True artists are not easy to cage in........2003-12-10

An Absolute masterwork:
On the big scale, Art History teaches us how evolution in artistic terms is propelled from small circles of vilified artists offering often neglected products, to mass generalization of their new viewpoint. During this process, of course, many of the new proposals will be forgotten, but on the whole, this new approach will be accepted, because basically it reflects a more suitable vision of the world for that time being. Last century brought in a new factor in this evolution, which is the transformation of art in a marketed business, and the extended use of art/media as the near-perfect tool for control and guidance of the people's trends and even moral values, which have turned the romantic approach to art as a liberating tool into a commonly accepted alienating experience. But true artists are not easy to cage in, so sometimes we are thrilled to discover brilliance trying to wake up from the matrix and share with us their iluminating experience.
In contemporay musical terms (and of course taking into consideration all classical revolutions -dodecafonism, bruitism, serialization, microtonal or polyrythmic composition, jazz and free jazz, etc) and regarding popular music, this was attempted during the late sixties when some musicians broke all rules present at that age and started composing songs which avoided the common formula (3 minutes, love theme lyrics in the English idiom, repetitive verse-chorus structure etc) in such a way that -later- they were called progressive. Of course, after a while. it degenerated as well into another formulaic overused scheme, and again artists, aware of all that, tried to break the carcass so the substance could be delivered.
One of them is Chris Cutler, a truly original drummer who had played with the canterburian band Henry Cow and many other multitalented combos. He eventually set in motion the Rock In Opposition movement with the intention of creating a friendly entourage for musicians with a non-compromising creative itch.
Rock In Opposition (RiO) is just the negative of New Age. When new Age tries to put you to sleep, RiO will shake your neurons in the same way as The Catcher In The Rye could relate to Harry Potter's stories. Bands in the RiO school will never be high in any top list because it is not music to please your senses (even if you can find in it many uttermost sublime experiences of pure beauty) Bands like Henry Cow, Etron Fou, Samla's, Univers Zero, Miriodor, 5UU's, Forever Einstein, Sotos, Rascal Reporters are in my opinion true treasures because with the freedom they show in their work they prove to us all that -still- there are some spaces where that freedom can exist and be shared, which is basically to give us all some relieving hope when facing the actual music scene.
So there is Absolute Zero, a trio of unhumanly skilled musicians who have been one way or another fighting the beast for 20 years (and the beast is all that prevented them from releasing their first album earlier) It is a real pleasure for me to be able to show my admiration to Enrique Jardines (you have not heard a bass like this) Aislinn Quinn (keyboards, vocals) and the formidable Pip Pyle (of Canterbury fame) for what they have accomplished on this album. To describe the music here is as difficult as reviewing Jorge Luis Borges books, the simple reason being that everything is there. Four long tracks make the cd, and the only non-misleading hint I can give you is the topic Chaos under Control. Power and beauty. Thunderous zeulish bass, voice used as an instrument, themes ever changing, electronic bits with intention. Grotesque and fantastic constructions substitute each other along mind-blowing, full of unexpected beatings and breaks, often atonal drumming by the truly amazing Pip Pyle. Enrique's bass guitar is one of the two most diversely changing instruments on "Crashing Icons" along with Aislinn's vocals. Many times you won't even think it is a bass, and it makes me think Robert Fripp should hire him for KC, being his 6-stringed instrument much better and creatively different that the (Chapman) Stick.
Music here is strong, powerful, beautiful and liberating. I just can't recommend this record enough. If you are interested in Rock or Jazz, Electronic, Progressive, or just in good music let this wonderful crystallization of talent, creativity and freedom cheer your soul.

5 out of 5 stars close and intelligent attention to detail - compositional.......2003-12-10

ABSOLUTE ZERO: Crashing Icons
Based in Miami, this is a very interesting American band, ploughing its own furrow - whose accent is what they call 'prog' over there, but whose language is more complex by far. Pip Pyle adds a seasoned sophistication - in fact I think this is a great environment for him, he shines - but the whole ensemble is way past the foothills and keeping the oxygen packs handy. An excellent first CD, in a style that, features densely composed, layered, slightly post 5UU-school music - with some sung parts, high level rock/abstract improvisation. virtuoso playing and excellent clean, powerful production. In fact close and intelligent attention to detail - compositional, performative and sonic - is its hallmark. These are long-considered, sustained pieces. A fine debut .

Album Description

Gear Magazine's TOP 100 hottest people, places, and things on the planet in 2001! A pack of New Order fanatics from Long Island, New York, My Favorite's sterling debut LP, Love At Absolute Zero, filtered love, youth and longing through a pulsing synthesizer heart, achieving a warmth and immediacy their inspirations lacked.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Definately "my favorite".......2006-11-03

I recommend this CD, its very catchy and you can listen to it over and over. I drove from Delaware to Arizona and listened to it at least a handful of times. Never got tired of it! Normally not into this type of music, but I enjoyed it a lot. VERY reasonably priced as well! Get a lot of bang for the buck. =)

5 out of 5 stars The best CD in years...........2004-01-20

This is one amazing piece of work. Can you seriously say you are hearing anything better than "Absolute Zero" or "Absolute Beginners Again" on the radio these days? This band takes what was good about 80s music to a whole new level. Sure there are numerous New Wave influences here, but this CD is a testament to the fact that My Favorite have a style all their own. What's most impressive about this CD, a virtual rarity these days even among the most popular artists, is that there is not one bad, or even mediocre track included. This is simply a superb collection of songs that one can listen to over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars Good stuff despite weird production.......2003-12-02

Although the album sounds strange (hissy highs but in a muffled kind of way), the songs shine through here. Absolute Beginners Again, Informers, The Truth About Lake Ronkonkoma, all excellent. Not a big fan of Party Crashers. Question: who out there is better, Mr. Negative review?

1 out of 5 stars They try soooooo hard..........2003-11-15

It must be tough to be branded New Wave revivalists when you can't even convincingly demonstrate that you have the slightest grasp on the genre. Sure, this record is stuffed with 80s references, both musical and lyrical, but they only go as far as evoking images and moods of John Hughes films. From sappy lyrics about parties and party dresses, right down to the trying *way* too hard to be 80s album title. In short, they the have substance of an 80s party band, yet they're too wimpy and sentimental to play at any party, making for a pretty large style over substance ratio. They really should've just put a photo of Molly Ringwald on the cover to drive the point home.

At any rate, the music and melodies only occasionally hint at New Wave, as one can hear on the title track and the pretty, synth-based, moody ballad "You Belong With Us." But they tend to empahsize the wrong sounds, and as a result, they often come off as a third rate 90s indie pop band. They *try* to incorporate a vague 80s influence, but sound like they only just discovered it through soundtracks to John Hughes films. And perhaps more importantly (and more detrimental to the record), they *play* the songs like a 90s indie pop band, eschewing (or completely oblivious to) the subtlety, atmosphere and melodic sense that better New Wave bands demonstrated so effortlessly.

Particularly irksome is the male vocalist's fake English accent. Don't get me wrong, English accents sound beautiful to my ears, but only when the person singing is English! Perhaps he was vaguely aware of their inability to convincingly plunder 80s music, and he adopted the fake accent to make up for it. Either way, it just plain smacks of poseurdom. The female vocalist actually has a pleasing, lovely voice, and they would've been wise to hand the mic over to her full time.

Clearly there are much worse bands, guilty of far greater crimes against humanity. In the grand scheme of things, My Favorite are pretty innocuous. I suppose what bothers me so much about them is how their fans throw out comparisons to brilliant 80s bands like New Order, the Cure, the Smiths, etc., when My Favorite absolutely pales when compared to these bands. They don't even come close. Maybe to all the indie kids who were too young to experience any 80s music beyond the John Hughes film soundtracks their older sisters were playing, this stuff might seem like a fairly accurate throwback. But to people with a much firmer grasp on the genre, the comparisons are heinously weak, and the substance-free music is of very little consequence.

5 out of 5 stars The best post millenial New Wave band.......2003-11-06

I've been a fan of My Favorite for years, having done sound for them way back in the mid-90's at a little dump of a bar on Lond Island. They blew me away back then, and they continue to impress me today, with this surprising comeback after years of hearing absolutely zero (:)) about them! This full length (certainly not their first, but first official I suppose) is an impressive blend of new wave synths, dark lyrics about suburban angst and an overall emotive feel...

Much more polished then their (nearly impossible to find) "The Day the World Turned Blue" full length and "Briton Riot Tape" first demo, "Love At Absolute Zero" will appeal to any fan of New Order, The Smiths, The The, or newer acts such as Belle & Sebastian (less acoustic), The Sea & Cake, etc. Don't forget to pick up their 3 new EP's as well, or simply get "The Happiest Days Of Our Lives", which includes all three EP's plus a disc of remixes... you WON'T be disappointed... these guys write amazing songs with equally amazing lyrics, and capture suburban life like no other band around today. Not to be missed...

Okay so I never thought many people would amount to anything coming out of GIA but you guys have blown my mind. And those of you in the band not from GIA, I solute you on your talents. Watch out anyone who likes Everclear, Silverchair, or anything along those lines... here you come! I really hope you guys can make it big.Your sound proves that it is possible for small bands, like mine, to get somewhere. Hella yeah!

5 out of 5 stars These guys TOTALLY rock!!.......2001-06-16

I saw these guys at a concert, and I can tell you they are AWESOME!! It is some of the best music I have ever heard. Keep it up guys!

3 out of 5 stars Who Knew Vermonters Could Thrash?.......2001-03-29

My sole problem with this band is that, at least judging by the insert photos (which were probably taken a year or two ago), its members are younger and even cuter than that archetypal flash-in-the-pan band Hansen. Especially that drummer dude--what's with that? He's more adorable than a young Gary Coleman and that kid from "Jerry Maguire" put together. Anyway, someday VERY soon these guys are gonna grow up and find that they have to reinvent themselves completely.

In the meantime, though, they have a pretty good thing going. They are loud, brash, together, and very much in tune. The tunes are uniformly good, but "Hold Me Under" was my favorite. Not bad for a bunch of cow-town teenagers, nuh?

Apparently they will need a new name, though, since there is already a band named "Absolute Zero" listed on Amazon which plays "Latin-influenced Smooth Jazz" (blech!). My suggestion for the boys from Vermont is "Spastic Pants." Or how about simply "Holstein"? (Maybe it sounds too much like Hansen.) Anyway, give this disc a well deserved listen, and if you have any ideas for a new moniker maybe you can include it in your review too.
