About the Artist
Heidi Saperstein rode the new millenium in as a solo performer, having spent the previous decade in bands whose makeup was predominantly female before such aggregations became commonplace. Five of those latter years were spent in Shiva Speedway. Heidi's original guitar contribution to this edgy rock band blossomed into additional duties as its songwriter and featured singer. Their album Psychic City came out in 1999 on Rainbow Quartz Records.

Even "solo" Heidi rarely goes it totally alone. Numerous other musical guests embellish her 2001 Kimchee Records debut, The Devil I Once Knew, and its follow-up, 2004's Zara, including TW Walsh of Pedro the Lion, Daniel Coughlin (Thalia Zedek band, Come), and Duke Levine (Mary Chapin Carpenter band). And upon Zara's release Heidi will once again be touring with a full band. There's an earthy brazenness of sentiment in Heidi's work, achieved in the mix of her "knowing" voice and downbeat guitar explorations, but she just as effortlessly takes flight in irresistable vocal reaches and harmonies. Both a challenge and an embrace, the music of Heidi Saperstein is never less than enthralling.

Three years after The Devil I Once Knew, her Kimchee Records debut, Boston indie-rocker Heidi Saperstein brings ten new and relentlessly melodic songs to the table on Zara, making the most accessible music of her career. Lyrically dark and emotionally compelling, Zara utilizes lush production techniques and an expansive array of instruments (multi-guitars, piano, organ, trumpet, cello, percussion, etc.) to illuminate the intricate arrangements of what are nonetheless very catchy tracks. Heidi's vocals are multi-tracked and center-stage. Their effect has been favorably compared to that of PJ Harvey and Kristen Hersh, and here even a hint of Kate Bush-like vocalese is suggested in a song like "I (Heart) You." But Heidi's voice, mature and self-possessed, is most assuredly a distinctive one. On Zara she displays a songwriting gift to match it that bears sturdy fruit on every one of its memorable songs.

I'm not a music expert.......2005-08-25

I don't know too much about music. I own over 700 cds, but I don't play music and I don't have much experience with this music. My only point of reference was the ninth symphony, seeing as every other piece in this box set was new to me. It sounds fine, nothing wrong with it as far as I can see.

Now, here's what you'll get in this box set, seeing as Amazon does not give it a description. 40 cds! no joke, you get 40 cds in this box set. It features:

As far as I can tell, the only things missing are The Spectre's Bride and Jacobin. Seeing as it is 40 cds, i have not had an opportunity to listen to it, however what i have heard i have been quite satisfied with.

not too bad.......2004-02-19

For the price, you can't go wrong.

*I had purchased an abundance of the "Favorites" collection some were better than others. This one was not too bad compared to the others, but not the best one.
I was kind of perturbed when some same tracks on this CD were on another CD, and visa versa.

A well-produced classical variety album.......2003-10-13

This album could have easily been filled with selections just from Bach, Mozart, Vivaldi, and Beethoven, but thankfully the record producers chose some deeper cuts. Though the above mentioned greats are prominently featured (and rightly so), Grieg and Offenbach are welcome additions.

Like all the "25 _____ Favorites" albums I've listened to, the pieces are well-chosen, expertly performed, and excellently produced with sharp, clear sound. The album's variety is welcome as well, giving the listener 70+ minutes of a changing but continuous audio landscape.

There's not much here that will knock the socks off a classical purist, but that's part of its appeal. The pieces are good enough to satisfy the more refined classical music palate but accessible enough for those less-experienced in concertos. 25 CONCERTO FAVORITES comes recommended to those seeking a well-produced and pleasant classical variety album.

Great Concertos from Baroque to Romantic Era.......2000-08-16

The excerpts from 25 concertos range from the Baroque to Romantic Periods. They are all masterfully performed by virtuoso musicians (example: Brendel is the pianist in the last track, the Beethoven Emperor piano concerto). The violinists are skillful and well-known artists. Concerto music by Baroque legends such as Torelli and Bach. Mozart and Haydn's music is marvelous to hear. We have Mozart's piano concerto movements and flute concertos. Finally, in the Romantic field, Brahms, Mendelsshon and Tchaikovsky. This an affordable price for a cd that contains such excellent music.

Still inspiring.......2006-06-09

Even though the album isn't composed of the exact music from the show, it still gives you the same sense of awe that you experienced while watching the show. And much of the cd's music is based loosely on the music from the show, so you will recognise most of the tracks. I am especially delighted with this album because my favorite song from the show (that plays while one of the creatures is carrying the illuminated balloon) is featured in three of the tracks :)

If you REALLY want the exact music from the show, there is an exclusive soundtrack that includes these tracks plus six live recordings from the show (though it costs much more). I can't tell you where online to find it because Amazon will get angry, but I'm sure if you're determined you can find it. ;)

Not as expected..........2005-12-06

I gave this two stars because I felt sorry for Violaine Corradi. This is definetely not the Corradi I was expecting. If you want to listen to his better works, listen to Dralion! Varekai is not what I expected from a Cirque CD. I'm very disappointed.

Not exaclty expected, but good nonetheless........2005-10-26

This CD is amazing.

Some people are angry that it doesn't have all of the tracks from the show, but none of the Cirque Du Soleil CDs do! This album was a departure from Cirque tradition, though, because it was the first CD to be released under the CIRQUE MUSIQUE label...they tried more the idea of the show, instead of the show itself. The CD and the show are two different entities, but they are both ones that I love very much!

Varekai CD.......2005-08-15

Varekai is a Touring Show of Cirque du Soleil. It is a great show and the music hits your soul deeply. The lead female singer, Zara Tellander, hits great notes that reach out and go deeply into your soul. Cirque du Soleil always find singers who have great voices. Most songs are in an imaginary language. Trying to interpret one is difficult. Just let yourself go as you listen to it and let the music take your soul for a ride.

Dear God there are some idiots on this earth..........2005-08-13

No, this is not the music from the live show, Varekai, but much of it is used somewhere throughout the show, perhaps in a slight variation or in different lengths. Regardless of whether or not it is the soundtrack to the show, it's still beautiful. If the people who claim to "love" the show actually knew anything about Cirque du Soleil Musique in general they would know that most of the show music they sell on CD is not an actual soundtrack. I know at least that the Quidam, Varekai, La Nouba, Alegria, and Dralion CDs are this way. But check the boutique at www.cirquedusoleil.com, because they have released new editions of some that contain bonus live tracks recorded directly from the shows. They also have a Mystere: LIVE CD that is the music from a live production of Mystere. For those of you that say that the singers on stage in Varekai and the singers on the CD are the same? I hate to inform you that had you watched the reality show Cirque du Soleil: Fire Within, you would also know that this is not true. Leading up to Varekai's opening night they had a male singer from somewhere in eastern Europe and they let him go relatively soon before the show debuted and replaced him with another. And if you knew anything about showbusiness in general you would know that even if the original on-stage male singer for Varekai had been the same as the singer on the CD, he's probably been replaced by now, as Varkai's been touring for a few years.

Great cello playing.......2005-02-13

These are the very best recordings ever made by Zara Nelsova. This is great cello playing: total control and musicianship. Some of this stuff hasn't been available for 30-40 years, like the Beethoven sonatas, the Dvorak with Krips, the Lalo, and others. It also has some amazing pieces by Bloch, including her best recording of Schelomo, Voice in the Wilderness, and Jewish Life with the composer at the piano. The sound is good, mono, but still high quality. One drawback is that you can often Nelsova's fingers hitting the fingerboard. The intensity and personality really comes through though, and I can't recommend this collection of outstanding cello playing highly enough.

Greatest piece of Jewish Music =s Handel's Messiah.......2005-03-02

This is a great recording of one of the greatest pieces of religious music, not just for Jews but for Christians alike. Only one recording better: Bernstein's classic recording on vinyl with his New York Symphony and the late great Leonard Warren, sadly not available on CD, (so far as I know). (Pray for Bernstein's CD availability, then demand it, from the powers that be!) [Yes, this recording is a little better than the South African recording, I have all three!]

A set rich with history and fine performances.......2003-12-23

Once upon a time, there was an orchestra who was to burst on the international scene but, who was before it, quite a good ensemble under their affable leader, Walter Susskind. The St. Louis Symphony, which realized incredible heights with Slatkin at the helm, here gives fine performances, showing once again that Slatkin didn't have to start at ground zero.

The cello concerto is given a thoughtful, not-playing-to-the-crowd performance. A wonderful change from all the hysterics that are often brought in to the piece. Silent Woods is a wonderful, contemplative piece that is worth knowing, and here is the perfect opportunity.

The violin concerto is given a fine performance, although Ricci is not in his prime. Despite that, he is still a great musician, and it shows. The Romanze is in the same mold as Silent Woods. You should really get to know it!

The piano concerto, kind of a goofy piece from Dvorak's pen, is still very enjoyable. Here it is given a performance by one of its biggest advocates. While others may quibble and say his other performances are better, this performance is quite fine in all aspects.

Well-engineered discs, too. These were originally recorded by the Vox folks. Definitely a bargain and worth every penny...IMHO!

Glenn Gould's playing is so treasured that CD publishers have been looking for anything of his they can find. These treasures, dredged from the CBC archives and Gould's own collection, offer some fresh material. The Beethoven trios, broadcast in 1954, don't sound great, but they are fine performances and show Gould as a fine chamber music collaborator. The piano pieces, from 1952, sound somewhat better and are played straightforwardly, without the eccentric ideas that crept into Gould's playing later in his career. This disc is probably for Gould fans only, but it should delight them. --Leslie Gerber

EARLY GOULD...THE ONLY RECORDING OF BEETHOVEN'S OP. 101..........2006-06-04

Gould's early work is remarkable. He already had his exquisite timing; moreover, his digital dexterity was absolutely miraculous: he played things as he did because HE COULD do it. None of the great pianists really had GG's gift.

Now, with Beethoven I've long been exclusively a Kempff fan. Kempff had great control and expression, plus he had a real insight into Beethoven's musical architechtonics. Gould has been damned for his vibrant Mozart and his peculiar Beethoven. But I have to say that I prefer GG's Mozart to anybody else's; plus, now I'm getting the vision of his Beethoven.

GG's recordings of Beethoven's late sonatas were done early in his career. Here, the Op. 101 was done in 1952 prior to his great Goldberg's recording of 1955. This is the only performance of GG's B's Op. 101 available. The wonderful Opp. 109-11 were done in 1956. They're incredible, and now I actually prefer them to Kempff's readings.

This is real art.

Excellent, obscure works.......2002-10-28

Levina's piano concerto is an outstanding piece, taut and brooding. It's not clear to this writer why it is not performed more. The short Poem for Viola and Piano is eerie and beautiful, and the Makarova symphony is good, too. Justification that the "unknowns" produced some sublime work. A pity that these composers are overlooked in favor of the conventional repertoire of Soviet music.
