French pop concern Headphone is essentially the work of Jean Michel Pires (who hits the drum for Bed, Bosco, Married Monk) who drafts in other musicians according to their talents and the nature of the project. (Marc Sens, Benoit Burello from Bed, Nicolas Courret from Eiffel) Works 1998-200- mix live electronic sounds with a rock ethic and more than a splash of improvisation. The route the band follows is into a world of different texture (avant rock-jazz-blues rock) where song structure is implied rather than constructed. Using horn, vibraphone, trombone, guitar and organ, Headphone floats over the unpredictable geography of the songs below the band, which brings into mind the desolation of Talk Talk, the warmth of A small good thing, and the uneasy psychedelism of Can. Built in three years, Works 1998-200- is a sophisticated album , without a trace of pretension. An understated treasure.
