Developed under the guidance of physician Fred Schwartz, the Transitions recordings serve both to enhance the miracle of childbirth and to aid infant sleep. Looking to reduce the stress of parents and infant children, musicians Joe and Burt Wolff worked with Dr. Schwartz to combine digital samples of actual womb sounds, barely discernable female vocals, and the soft wash of other atmospheric sounds. Recommended by childbirth educators and infant-development specialists for its relaxing effect, Transitions has been clinically proven to stimulate the blood oxygen levels of premature infants in critical care. Hypnotic and sweet - a great pick for nighttime.......2006-09-21
The swoosh-swooshing heartbeat/womb sounds are pleasant and gentle; they are also mixed fairly well with the music so that it doesn't sound overly womb-y or barely womb-y. They are also mostly on one channel, so if you want to increase or decrease the swooshing to taste, and your system allows for it, you can adjust the balance to this end.
I put this one on every night as I nurse my baby down (don't let anyone tell you "never nurse your baby to sleep" - that is what nursing is FOR, like, duh!) and half the time I fall asleep too, just from relaxing to the soothing sounds.
The CD is consistent all the way through - what you hear in the first five minutes is what you're going to hear for the next hour, so no need to worry about "getting into the groove" and then having it totally change on you. But if you ARE looking for something that has several different sounds, or a variety of music, this is probably not the one for you.
I wish I had had this one during labor, too. Highly recommend. (And please don't listen to the reviewer who referenced "Secrets of the Baby Whisperer" - that is an AWFUL book.)

Does any DJ listen to more music than John Digweed? Hard to say, but the fact that Diggers is known to go through all the music he receives, personally, may have something to do with why he has--perhaps wisely--elected to release a single Transitions disc twice a year (instead of the two-disc compilations that seem to be the norm for other DJs). Not only does this give listeners a snapshot of his ever-evolving mixes, it allows him to capitalize on the fact that, as one of the biggest names in the business, he has access to all sorts of exclusives and upfront tracks, such as Guy Gerber's remix of "Dana," a glowing spellbinder that has yet to be released. On its heels comes Antena's portentous "Camino del Sol (Joakim Mix)," which promises an inescapable hook from the first appearance of its chunky synths, itself followed by the ultra-refined shadow play of Williams's "The Shivering (Pitch and Hold in Camera Obscura Remix)." Digweed obviously understands better than anyone that the impact of each track is largely determined by how it relates to all the others. As always, his programming can leave listeners dumbfounded; tracks like David K's off-kilter minimal trip "Boul de Nerf" may lead to some initial head-scratching. But then there is that rule of thumb that never fails with Digweed: "listen again." --Brent KallmerAlbum Description
Following the success of the first in John Digweed's Transitions series, one of the most acclaimed albums of this legendary DJ's career, Digweed returns with the eagerly anticipated second volume. Taking the inspiration from his worldwide sets and globally syndicated radio show, this single disc is full of seamless segues and driving bass lines - a current glimpse of John at his masterful best. His standing as a world-renowned DJ has enabled him to include several tracks that are exclusively available on this album prior to their full single release. Amongst these are Guy Gerber's atmospheric mix of Chaim EP - `Dana', David K's trippy masterpiece `Boul de Nerf' and two tracks by G-Stylz (aka Bruce Aisher). Digweed has long been a force in the studio, and his production acumen is highlighted here, as he turns in subtle, exclusive edits throughout the album. As with Vol.1, it is his flawless mixing and programming that Digweed brings to this project, creating a mix that offers new interpretations, improving with each listen as it shifts from 124 to a 129 bpm finale across it's 70 minutes.

Sacrifices Groove For Trippiness.......2007-07-08
In the end, the tracks I really liked on the album and the tracks that I thought were mediocre didn't change a whole lot from my first impression. The set starts off with four good tracks. Track 3, Chaim EP's "Dana" (Guy Gerber Mix) is an excellent track, and my personal favorite on the album. Bonus points for Digweed getting his hands on that one and commercially premiering it on this compilation.
So what's my problem with this album? It starves for a little more groove and a lot less...creepiness! Too many tracks (i.e. track 10, Dirk Technic's "I Love You" (Smallboy Remix)) could easily be background music for some horror/sci-fi B-Movie that was filmed in the 70's or 80's. Yes, this makes the album a hell of lot more trippy, but it is so overly done throughout the entire set that it gets tiresome after awhile.
3.5/5 stars.

Picking up where its predecessor left off, Transitions 2 is the finely tuned collaboration of Dr. Fred Schwartz, the Wolff brothers, and the hypnotic harmonies of vocalist Susan Marriott. These soothing frequencies may well rival the mythological music of the spheres as tone upon tone spirals, warms, and rings a message of profound well-being. Although formulated for the maximum benefit of laboring mothers and their most precious cargo, the Transitions series magically eases busy minds and restless spirits of adults and children of all ages. The second volume is effective as a sleep and meditation aid and is also a wonderful accompaniment for massage, yoga, or a still moment for finding one's center. A nourishing gift to yourself or another loved one, these holistically healthy discs provide welcome companionship to all who desire peace. --Paige La GroneProduct Description

This 2006 Hellcat debut from Boston's acclaimed ska septet places the band on a growing list of "new traditionalists", bands like the Aggrolites and the Slackers that bridge the gap between 60's reggae, soul, and blues and modern approaches, with touches of jazz and country. While sharing the stage with heavy hitters like The Toasters, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, The Street Dogs, Reel Big Fish, and The Skatalites, Westbound Train have forged their own sound, where highly danceable ska arrangements and rock steady beats are in ample supply.Customer Reviews:

The third in the unofficial series that began with 1999's Decks, EFX & 909, Richie Hawtin's Transitions is another scramble of minimalist techno and cutting-edge audio technology, delivered with the DJ's usual masterly touch. As one might expect from the title, the record is part of Hawtin's continuing assault on the notion of songs as individual entities. From beginning to end, Transitions toys with the whole idea of beginnings and endings. Hundreds of samples dissolve like bits of spice in a thick, sticky stew as Hawtin makes use of the latest studio innovations that have come along since 2001's DE9: Closer to the Edit. To that end, if possible, listen to this record in full 5.1 Surround Sound. Hawtin has always had a flair for ambience; it's one of the things that have allowed him to get away with his aggressively sparse approach. Here, the ambience is woven into the record's texture so deeply, it can only be fully appreciated via full immersion. Even with a fancy stereo system, Transitions may feel a little chilly to the uninitiated. Blips and tiny pieces of melody echo through a chasm of cold, mostly empty space. Set aside some time for it, though, in a darkened room with a glass of good Cabernet, and you'll get the idea. Also note: The package includes both a "shortened"74-minute cd mix, as well as a 96-minute DVD version. --Matthew CookeCustomer Reviews:

Customer Reviews:
It's about time for Freddie to get his dues........2007-03-11
I am so pleased for the man, and am more pleased with this CD. It is very much a Freddie Jackson album but perfectly moulded - probably cleverly - to today's more transient, and fickle, ear. This is not to say that it's a sop to the hoodie wearing bling crowd - far from it. Beau and Charlie Huggins are in the driving seat and artists such as Marc Nelson and the evergreen and all too silent Paul Laurence also have input. I was impressed with Marc's 1991 set "I Want You" which contained some real corkers, and he has spun his magic onto Freddie here and now in 2006.
I have four killers on here - all absolutely essential, but to be fair there isn't really a bad or unlistenable track on the album. My first star pick is the delightful bubbler, "Hold On Me", which is unashamedly 2006 but has more roots in classic R&B than many other songs. Freddie is atop of his form on these types of cuts; delivery is effortless and soulful, rich and plaintive. The addictive rhythm and the synth and keys all transform this into a very moreish morsel indeed.
"Can't Get My Flow" leaped out at me from the word go. It is a classic Paul Laurence midtempo number and I am so pleased that these two giants are together again. Whenever Freddie and Paul collaborate magic is sure to be the result. I cannot recommend this track enough, but I only wished that Paul had more input on this album - better still release another solo set. It's been 17 years since "Underexposed" and don't I know it.
The best ballad by far on here for my money is the AWESOME "More Than Friends" which is a Marc Nelson number. This song is a wonderful track, albeit very similar to a few other songs. Imagine the lovechild of Demetrius Perry's "Another World" and Al B. Sure!'s "Night And Day" and there you have "More Than Friends. This song is very much its own entity, though, but the comparison should get you excited anyway!
Another monster tune is Freddie's cover of Asaph Womack's "Heaven". He has taken an already great song and has sent it to the stars. This type of groove is perfect for Freddie and is one I would like to hear more of. The album ends on a very poignant and emotional tribute to the late, great and wholly irreplaceable Luther Vandross. I seriously miss this man and its obvious Freddie does too. For me it is important that artists such as Freddie continue doing what they do as I fear that I don't see any new talents on the horizon that could seriously be compared to either. Today's ephemeral anti-culture has seen to that, along with the scheming and penny-pinching record companies who want nothing but a quick buck and then move onto the next foul-mouthed rapper or clone.
There is also a second disc which is a limited edition DVD which features many of Freddie's videos. These are all the bonafide videos - "Rock Me Tonight", "Tasty Love", "He'll Never Love You (Like I Do)", and "Rub Up Against You" - and they're all on here. I'm not into music videos at all, but these are nice to have nonetheless. It certainly makes this a very satisfying and worthwhile purchase. This album and what it has achieved should be celebrated and given as much exposure as possible. It's in all our interests to do this.

John Digweed has kept busy in recent years, with everything from remix records (like last year's Fabric 20 release) and Podcasts to collaborative projects with his Bedrock partner Nick Muir. Transitions is taken from his globally syndicated radio show of the same name, and is just the first in a promised series of discs. Digger's expansive approach to dance music has led him down both light (the Northern Exposure collaborations with Sasha) and dark (Global Underground: Los Angeles) paths, and while Transitions can be sparse, it's mostly an up trip. The beats are exceedingly solid when they kick in, scattered with the DJ's usual patience and dance floor sense. A welcome melodicism floats in and out of the mix, as Popnonname's "On The Run" winds around a kind hook while Rocco's "Roots 4 Acid" goes for theatrics. There's an airy feel to the record, mostly in the texture and tinges of electro on tracks like On Spec's "Knights of Columbus" with its wiry little bassline grabber. It could use a bit more variation; the thing ends just when the vibe really starts to settle in. A 2-cd set may have worked better, but that's more quibble than criticism. Enjoy. - Matthew CookeAlbum Description
John Digweed, along with DJ partner Sasha, made dance music history with the 1995 release of Mix Collection on the Renaissance label. This album is widely considered to be the first DJ mix album ever commercially released, and it set the standard for every DJ mix album that was to follow. 10 years later, John Digweed now returns to Renaissance with the release of Transitions. With the title taken from his globally syndicated radio show, the single disc project will be released as two volumes each year, a showcase of John's inimitable sound and flawless mixing which has established him as one of the world's most innovative DJs, firmly lodged amongst the upper echelons of the A-list. The album features the exclusive new Digweed track "Warung Beach."Customer Reviews:
THE Definition of "Give It a Chance"-ness.......2006-12-31
I had little else to listen to at the time, and began spinning this one on a constant basis on the mundane trips I had to make, daily, in my car. Before long, I found myself actually HEARING the album... and I have to say it is my most-played Digweed album that I own out of probably eight, including several of his GU sets. GU:Sydney is the only set of his I play more often than this mix CD.
The original problem was expectations not being met. I really had not thrown myself into this 'minimalist techy-dub-house' thing yet, and was expecting one of those wildly dark, haunting and progressive rides Digweed indefatiguably provides his listeners, and what I got was something that required - *gasp* - patience. But the real beauty of this album lies WITHIN its minimalism, and I believe only an artist as truly talented as Digweed could make sense of this quandary. He did, with flying colors.
Cruising, Feelin', On The Run and Torch are fine tracks, plain and simple. They've get terribly subtle grooves, neat turntablist tricks and infections basslines. But if the first four tracks are infectious, the REAL epidemic breaks out with the fifth track, Tigerskin's 'Neontrance' which masterfully mixes into Catwash's 'Plastic Rubberband' which is my favorite song on the entire CD along with Knights of Columbus, Warung Beach and Gebrunn Gebrunn. The keys to this album's brilliance are the GREAT(!) basslines and the transitional subtleties [perhaps the reason behind the Series' title]: They are SO masterfully crafted that the reason I initially disliked this album is because I simply MISSED them entirely!
I often liken the best of progressive trance to electronic classic music; music with so many variabilities, different themes coinciding and playing against one another. The oddity about this album is that I can liken it to classical music, but due to the LACK of such thickly lain-on musical soundscapes. It is wholly pleasurable, funky and eclectic music that only someone who really stands the test of giving an album a chance will appreciate. Trust me, they will thank their personal Gods for granting them said patience - I know I have.
They say the bad thing about first impressions is that you only get one. Fine; my first impression of this gem was terrible. After putting some aural effort into this mix, however, I cannot put it down.
*I am verrrry eagerly awaiting Transitions - Vol. 2 which will be released in the U.S. in 27 days. I have a bootlegged version of the entire CD already, and will say this: it is on par with Transitions, Vol. 1. I will be supporting this superbly odd Mix series by purchasing the upcoming album retail.

Silky smooth..........2006-10-12
It's got an electronic, tech-y feel but what is remarkable about the whole affair is how moving it is, perhaps not so much dance floor movement but the kind of movement that stirs you awake. There is a reason that Digweed's name stands out in the field of electronica and this mix is a perfect example of that. He knows what moves people and how to deliver and he succeeds here. The whole mix is fluid. Though there are some lulls it's the kind that leaves the listener waiting for him to drop the bomb.
I haven't been this excited about a mix since Nick Warren's "Shanghai" or Hernan Cattaneo's "Sequential" (both stellar in their own right). A new sound, a different direction and current. Don't miss out.
