Product Description
APOGEE shows the solo works of Arne SCHÄFER, the talented leader and singer of German band VERSUS X. Apart from this collective experience, hes also written numerous tracks, a selection of which is included on "The Border Of Awareness" (1994). He shows there his obvious talents as multi-instrumentalist and as exceptional guitarist. Created by a brilliant composer, this CD reveals an incredible musical culture, that also includes German folk, jazz, Progressive rock, contemporary music and hard-rock. The five long tracks included on "Sisyphos" (1998) show a complex, sophisticated, contrasted and sometimes tortured art with expressive vocal lines, in a spirit close to Peter HAMMILLs. He particularly likes long themes with various changes, with magnified and refined sub-themes thanks to the large instrumental choice (Energetic electric guitar, delicate acoustic guitar, technique keyboards parts
). The five tracks of "The Garden Of Delights" (2003) develop an ambitious and complex symphonic rock that also shows a truly personal meditation about the human race, the conscience and the perception. Those 70 minutes of music blossom with musical structures and sophisticated themes. The atmospheres are thus varied, from the airy acoustic to the furious electric style, all of this wrapped into spacious keyboards lines, and with a few subtle dissonances. Not to be missed !

If you're looking to label this music as one sort or another--classical, jazz, bluegrass--you're bound to get into trouble. The two Quartets at work here--the Turtle Island String Quartet and the Ying Quartet--are innovators, blending absolutely classical training with a love of experimentation, improvisation, and an ear for unusual textures. The CD begins with a cool, swinging, true jazz classic ("Yearnin'") for the full octet and ends with a version of John Lennon's "Because" which captures the piece's melancholy in just the right manner. Along the way, an original work by the Turtle Island cellist, "Julie-O," discovers the darker and more virtuosic reaches of the pair of cellos. Darius Milhaud's "La Creation du Monde," a 1923 piece that explored the combination of European classical music and jazz, gets a new arrangement, and another original piece, "Variations on an Unoriginal Theme," pits one quartet against the other in a friendly competition that touches on R&B and Samba. This is a unique CD--entertaining and original. --Robert Levine
Customer Reviews:
There's a giant in the room.......2006-03-03
This is a just a great album to listen to. Weird and wonderful music, executed with joy and precision. There's a lot of power in this music, but it's delivered with such frivolous confidence that you barely notice there's a giant in the room. And as an added bonus, the album is sonically extremely pleasing. This recording has fantastic presence and ambience. A definite buy.
great for dinner parties .......2006-02-22
A great album - similar to the modern music composed by the Kronos Quartet, but more jazzy and upbeat. Every piece on this album is different and interesting- yet closer listening one can hear the themes that tie them all together. I've given this album to 5 people over the holidays - to both classical music lovers and those who never owned a string-quartet CD - and all have really enjoyed it.
A cross-over hit that refuses to compromise itself!.......2006-02-10
OK, I admit I bought this CD because they were nominated for a Grammy (which they just won). It has quickly become one of my favorite discs. It's amazing what these performers can do with their instruments. I really enjoy "Yearnin'," and although I'm always skeptical about Beatles arrangements, the lush harmonies of "Because" lend themselves well to a classical/jazz interpretation. Our family is a big fan of the Yings, and we hope to hear more from this wonderful quartet!
a truly great recording.......2005-07-23
as a founding member of this group, I want to say that this current lineup (with 2 of the original members) is one of the most versatile and powerful lineups for this band ever. And this recording is in many ways the best ever, technically and musically. Anyone who is interested in the TISQ, or string music of any kind, should buy this CD immediately!

Customer Reviews:
Agitation Free - 'Second' (Spalax).......2004-12-21
Originally came out in 1973,this was the band's second effort.Just as good as their later-day archive release 'At The Cliffs...'(see my review).I now have every one of Agitation Free's discs and the only one I dislike is the 'Other Sides Of...' because it's just way too jazzy. One of the first factors that a listener should pick up on while hearing 'Second' is that Agitation makes FULL use of combining middle eastern-like rhythms with some over-the-top electronic wizardry to create their OWN sound of what kraut/cosmic rock should be.The keyboard work by Michael Hoenig is superb as it IS with all Agitation records. All seven tracks are fantastically trippin',but I thought I'd at least mention "First Communications",the somewhat moody "A Quiet Walk" and the mid tempo "Haunted Island" will have the new owner of this CD playing it often. Also, the tunes "Laila,Pt.1" and "Laila,Pt.2" carry their weight rather well.Another must-have in the krautrock field. Will appeal to fans of Ash Ra Tempel,Cluster,Tangerine Dream and Faust.Highly recommended.
No agitation.......2003-02-26
Agitation Free's name typifies this entire record. From the opening track,"First Communication," to the beautiful "In the Silence of the Morning Sunrise," 2nd is AF's masterpiece. Unlike most of the other German groups of the time, Agitation Free fused electronics with middle eastern rhythms and melodies. Quite original for the time and still sounds fresh even now in the 21st century. The group's synthesist/keyboardist,Michael Hoening, would later tmove to the U.S. where he now composes music for film and television. If you like Tangerine Dream, Ash Ra Tempel, Klaus Schulze, etc., you should own this disc. An unacknowledged classic and slightly recommended over the group's first release, Malesch.

Customer Reviews:
This album is a mystical masterpiece and demonstrates the diversity of the troupe LA NEF!!!!.......2007-02-11
I have 4 of their albums, including "The Garden of Earthly Delights". I found this album to be more "mystically enchanting" than their other works. Typically, the album is presented as a themed play sung or played in about 17 acted scenes or "tracks". THE GARDEN* however, is more instrumental than say "Music for Joan the Mad", and, definately more mystical than "Le Monsignor".
I HIGHLY recommend you collect ALL OF LA NEF'S WORKS. This album is unique and isn't comparative to any of La Nef's other work. It stands out soley from all the rest and your collection wouldn't be complete without it. Although I prefer "Joan the Mad" and "The Quest for the Holy Grail" over this album (soley because I love the storylines), I'm very satisfied with my collection and happy I bought it.
My testimony of this troupe is -- BUY EVERYTHING THEY PRODUCE...THEY'RE THAT GOOD! Each album is a book. Each scene or "track" is creative, entertaining and thoroughly nourishing to the soul. If you haven't gone Mideval....JUST LISTEN TO THIS.
a journey into the lightness of dark.......2003-11-25
This album offers an eclectic display of medieval music. We get pieces from the Cathar, French, Spanish, Andalusian &Sephardic traditions - yet the tunes blend easily - just like the bizarre beings in the famous triptych by H. Bosch melt into a fascinating whole. The Bosch painting is intensely personal, as each viewer picks out the details, patterns and configurations that speak to her.... and the same is true with this collection of 14th & 15th century music presented by La Nef, the sextet founded in 1991 by Sylvain Bergeron. the pieces are all played with medieval instruments (including lute, oud, the vielle, psaltery and santur); La Nef adapted a few pieces to address modern sensibilities, yet the adaptations ring true to me; perhaps this is what the Cathars really wanted?! I have listened to this CD many times and will listen to it again. And again. Recommended.

i don't think anybody who really appreciates music would look down on this album. it's really something that will stick with you over the years. it's hard to put it into any one musical category. it's a meshed instrumental of jungle beats, drum and bass, scratches, voice dubs, and various other samples. if you can say that you like atleast two music styles, then you'll appreciate this album. the sounds will motivate you, wind you down, or inspire you to sit back and disect with a smoke. the artist used a full pallet of paint to create this.
beats 2 blaze 2.......2004-03-23
Amazing. You can't find anything else like this anywhere. Reminding a bit of DJ Shadow but totally different sample sources. A little bit too psychadelic for my taste but it's a work of hip hop art.

Great!.......2007-07-15
Good stuff! I'll certainly be sad to see this band go; honestly they're the only surviving band still holding any interest for me after starting to listen to metal in my teens. I picked up Ethereal Mirror by accident, was surprised by the doom-y grooves, got their debut, liked that a lot also and then sort of drifted off to other types of music later after hearing the Carnival Bizzare. But what a swansong this is! The band's a settin and a rockin'..the guitars are heavy as anything and the production work is quite, quite good. You can sense the band having a good time with their songs. I don't really hear any of the 'tough guy' attitude that one reviewer inferred. Just good music. And the closing number: who was the last band doing something akin to that..Rush maybe? I personally really liked their last experiment; I like jazz and also happened to hear the last song after seeing Transformers in the theatre, so I'm a little biased maybe (try it, trust me!) But this album is so worth getting--like Deicide's debut, you can listen to the whole thing and continue to be thoroughly entertained all through. Good work lads!
.......2006-06-04
Some good rocking moments here and there (especially on "North Berwick Witch Trials" and "Oro the Manslayer"), but other than that Cathedral's style of Sabbath-isms combined with a sort of Southern Hard Rock groove can easily grow tired. "The Garden" also has its moments and strives to be different, but at 27 minutes long, it is just too long and sounds like an experiment gone wrong. Listening to some parts of this record reminded me of the funny tough-guy attitude brought by bands like Crowbar, which does not surprise considering who the producer is here. Cathedral rocks hard, but not in a way to maintain someone's interest for more than 5 minutes.
Phuck Me Runnin.......2006-05-06
Holy mother of god is this album heavy the bass is more brutal than the guitar and the guitar is very very brutal.Yea thats it phuckin buy it!
PLEASE DONT GO!!!!.......2006-03-09
This album is seriously catchy - and it better not be a swansong. I mean if metal wasn't underground then this would be grammy award stuff (eek what a thought - a metal planet where pop was underground arrrgghhh!) The highlights for me are North Berwick Witch Trials and Corpsecyle - these guys are so tight - playing better than ever. It is soooo much better than endtyme - Try driving your car and listening to this rippin music without speeding - I dare you!
Witchcraft spreading all around this Christian land....
This better not be the end..........2006-03-06
I've heard rumors flying that this might be the last Cathedral record. Say it ain't so, boys! But hell, the album's been out for months now, and still only one review? For whatever reason, these guys have never achieved the elevated status in the doom community that they deserve. Maybe their fate is to be that of Trouble or St. Vitus, ignored in their prime and elevated in retrospect.
Anyway, on to the record. If it is to be their swansong, Dorrian and Co. are going out on a high note indeed. This album is a synthesis of their last 2 records--the brutal doom sludge of Endtyme meets the more varied darkness of The VIIth Coming. These songs sound raw as all hell, and Dorrian is downright menacing, spewing his vocals with a vitriol that might even win back some of his fans from the old Napalm Death days. He juxtaposes this with his more melodic, Lemmy-meets-Ozzy vocals stylings to great effect.
As to the band...well, these guys are on fire. The rhythm section is throbbing with sludge and swing. Easily the best performance to date from drummer Brian Dixon. Bassist Leo Smee rumbles in the best Geezer fashion, and guitarist/riffbrain Gary Jennings is fericious, wearing his Iommi on his sleeve in most of his leads, but throwing in more dissonance, more darkness, more frenzy. As to the riffs, the songs have a blunt trauma aggression that I've never heard out of these guys before. Enough great ideas for 3 albums by a lesser band.
The music is disjointed as usual; weird changes and key-shifts abound, a tendency that probably has more to with Cathedral's absence from Electric Wizard/Kyuss/Sleep level adoration within the doom/stoner genre than anything else. These guys might in the end be too damn progressive for their own good. While they have all the girth and swing of the best of the post-Sabbath bands, they don't do to much of the stoner drone. Methinks they might have derailed a few too many good trips for fans of the genre...
All told, a great album, worthy of comparison to classics like The Ethereal Mirror and Forest of Equlibrium. And if it is to be the end, then why not go out with a 28-minute title track the closes the album and serves as a one-stop compendium of all the different styles, ideas, and feels Cathedral have incorporated into their crazy, heavy, absurd music through the years? I for one will lament their passing--for my money, there has not been a more innovative metal band to be found in the last 10 years. They picked up where Sabbath left off, before metal got hijacked and turned in a calisthentic workout of who can shred the fastest, scream the loudest, growl the lowest, and be more absent of anything resembling the dark blues/jazz/groove origins of the form. The world of metal is a better place for them. Too bad the community at large isn't going to realize it for another 10 years.
