Possibly the kitschiest band of the '80s (as Joy Division was for the '70s), Tears for Fears turned out a small treasury of well-crafted songs during their heyday and helped to define a genre that everybody recognizes, but nobody can name. "John Hughes movie pop" comes close, but somebody should find something more apt. Tears Fall Down collects all their best and adds a scattering of good album cuts. The original albums will still hold some delights after this, but they won't be required listening. If you want more Tears for Fears, check out their strong, though underappreciated, later work like 1996's Saturnine Martial & Lunatic. --Gavin McNettAlbum Description

DEFINING AN ERA!.......2007-07-20
with the initial wave of hits coming from "the hurting" the group went on to record their era-defining album in 1984 with "songs from the big chair" which (un)fortunately gave them worldwide recognition, number 1 hits, and international awards. the group has deinitely arrived.
however, in 1989, with high expectations generated by their second album, "the seeds of love" - their last album for the decade, was not able to generate the same euphoria as did the first two albums.
inevitably separating in 1993, roland orzabal and curt smith went on solo directions, with roland retaining the group's name. (between the two solo albums, i can say that it is curt's album that sounded better, as i am reminded of TFF's sound.)
for this greatest hits album, it seemed lacking in some tracks as it only included all the commercial hits and was not even arranged chronologically, not even digitally remastered.
the album could have included a few more hits such as the hurting, the working hour or badman's song.
whatever may have happened to TFF (they reunited two years ago with "everybody loves a happy ending") they were able to define an era with their music.
and until now, fans could not get enough of the group's released collections. for initiates, catch TFF much more by acquiring the following: the hurting (1999 remastered), songs from the big chair (1999 remastered), the seeds of love (1999 remastered), saturnine, martial and lunatic (1999), elemental (roland solo, 1993), soul on board (curt's solo album, 1993) and the deluxe limited edition of "songs from the big chair" for all the remixes, rarities and other goodies you need.
SHOUT! SHOUT! TEARS FOR FEARS 4EVER!!!.......2007-05-06
Awesome CD.......2007-03-22
The music is distinct, they don't sound like any other band.
No tears for Tears For Fears!.......2006-04-24
Their crisp pop/rock hippy-ish tunes and stadium rockers cemented the band's position on the charts and their status in rock history.
Although many consider Tears For Fears a nostalgic act that was begging to vanish away; their classics cannot be denied: the Beatlesque Sowing The Seeds Of Love, the anthemic mega hit Everybody Wants To Rule The World, the mellow Woman In Chains, the stadium rockers and fan favorites Shout and Head Over Heals, the elusive Laid So Low (Tears Roll Down), and the groovy Mothers Talk.
Even though the band are not as big as they used to be, shed no tears for Tears For Fears, their best 80's music is timeless and it's all here on Tears Roll Down.

Sloppy, misleading re-release.......2005-05-12
As for the remixes on Disc 2, it is shameful and misleading to even refer to a few of these tracks as "remixes." The "US Dance Mix" of "Laid So Low (Tears Roll Down)", for example, is not a remix at all but simply the original demo/b-side "Tears Roll Down" from the Seeds of Love era. Also, the versions of "Head Over Heels" and "Sowing the Seeds of Love" are so similar to the versions on Disc 1 as to make them virtually indistinguishable. The record company is clearly trying to trick buyers into thinking they're getting unique, different remixes when, in reality, they're not. It's major false advertising.
A few of the other remixes are interesting, however. The "Skylark Remix" of "Shout" is amusing, but too long at over 9 minutes. Ditto for the "Beat of the Drum Mix" of "Mothers Talk." The two most interesting and worthwhile mixes come from Jakatta (or "Jakkatta," depending on which spelling you choose from the sloppy track listing). The Jakatta mix of "Shout" contains a lovely, jazzy piano intro that is classic Tears for Fears, and the Jakatta mix of "Woman in Chains" also adds some interesting electronic and acoustic flourishes, although it would be impossible to top the original version of the song.
All in all, this collection is a waste of money. With a few minor exceptions, the remixes are laughable, and the aforementioned SHOUT: THE VERY BEST OF TEARS FOR FEARS compilation is a better-sounding, more expansive collection of the band's greatest hits.
At Least Update The Mastering!.......2005-03-26
On a more positive note, it's nice to have a disc of bonus remixes. Some of the tracks really shine in terms of the mastering quality, mainly those new mixes exclusive to this collection. However, tracks like "Pale Shelter (New Extended Version)" sound flat and dull in comparison to the more modern mastering job on the latter remixes. "Head Over Heels" sounds like a major step down coming after the new remix of "Change." It's like the producer of this compilation just threw tracks onto a disc without any care to the overall mastering level. Again, Universal is slacking!
One of the highlights here, nonetheless, is "Mad World (Afterlife Remix)." The song is taken down a notch in comparison to the original 1983 album version and given a more mellow production (probably inspired by the the Michael Andrews | Gary Jules 2003 UK #1 remake). It sounds great. The new remix of "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" is a bit shaky in the intro but makes up for it with the pounding beat joining in, making it a club highlight for '05.
Despite the major flaws in mastering, it's nice to have for the number of good remixes here. But, if you are worried about mastering you may wish to skip this compilation until Universal can properly put a Tears For Fears product together.

Excellent Remastering On DVD | Fair Remastering On CD.......2005-03-26
The DVD, on the other hand, is excellent! It features not only a remastered soundtrack but also DTS 5.1 audio (which I haven't had the chance to experience yet). Nonetheless, the original stereo mix sounds fantastic. I'm just wondering why Univeral didn't bother to apply this same mix to the CD versions. I guess they just wanted to take the cheap way out yet again.
Overall, I'll be generous and give it a solid 3-star rating, mainly for the DVD. I just wish more care was given to the audio on the CDs. Perhaps on the next reissue?
