5 out of 5 stars Excellent Album.......2007-03-08

I first heard of Some By Seas when I read on obscuresound.com this album is rated as among the top ten albums in 2006. I listened to a few sample tracks and I instantly fell in love with the music. So I bought this album. I was not disappointed. There is no single weak track in this album. Of all the 13 tracks, every one is thoroughly enjoyable. I would certainly rate it among my top ten 2006 albums as well.

1 out of 5 stars insincere.......2007-01-05

i just can't stand listening to a vocalist who i don't believe. this guy's sound is so laboriously cynical, it haunts my dreams. yes, the lyrics are unconventional in structure, but for what purpose? i'll add a proper review later, but i just wanted to take this albums score down while i still had the chance.

Some By Sea's sound is unlike any other. It goes beyond the fatal pop frame that many bands fall victim to, and into another level of music completely. This is accomplished through a diverse and superbly incorporated variety of instruments including the violin, cello, and trumpet, to name a few. Each song contains soaring multilayered instrumentations that showcase the talent of the group and blend harmoniously with the lead singer Chris DuBray. The female accompaniment of Rachel Bowman in multiple songs creates an even more distinct and complex melody. At first, the usage of such deep instrumentation may not appeal the listener, but after paying deep attention, I came to love ALL of the songs. Honestly, each song has their own charm, whether it be through heartwrenching vocals, soul striking musicianship, excellent lyrics, or in many cases, an unforgettable combination of the three.

An Introduction: You Can't Just Walk Away From Someone Who Is Leaning On You - To those who might say that's just way to long for a song title, I'd have to say HECK YEAH. But that's pretty much my only complaint with this album, and its a negligible one for shure. This song is an oddity that might leave the first-time listener a bit perplexed, but it does in fact set up the rest of the album with a nice display of vocals. It only gets better from here, baby.

A Night Without A Cineplex - The only song on the album with a violin accompaniment, the spiraling serenades that weave in and out periodically are superbly harmonized with the equally skillful guitar work.

This Song is Not About You, So Don't Ask - Another long name, the song is dreamy and countrylike, a combination I'd never thought possible with a cello and guitar. It may seem odd, but this union is incredibly beautiful, especially during the solo in the beginning and latter part of the song too.

One More Day Goes By - This song was initially one of my least favorites for its breezy and seemingly unimaginative flow. But a couple more listens and I was drawn into the chorus and the unique synth sound that distinguishes itself from all the rest. And the breeziness? Not so bad after all.

The Things We All Carry Around - I'm assuming this is the album's signature song, and rightfully so. With organic layering and a sound oh so death cab-esque, it is a great listen; however it's not necessarily in sync with the rest of the album. Nonetheless, the solo is absolutely AMAZING at first listen, the lyrics are superb, and overall it's probably the easiest way to immerse yourself in Some By Sea.

The Beginning of the World Often Comes - A morose piano and cello driven opening, the rest of the song actually did not interest me much. But the true appeal of this song is its epic and unforgettable grand finale, complete with an auxiliary choir.

The Saddest Christmas - Another slow one, the jingling bells and guitar conjure up images of an actual field of wintry wonder. As such, it is probably the most fitting melody for the song that it is, and leaves a sense of haunting beauty and elegiac awe within the listener.

Look What I Made Without Your Getting In the Way - Probably the poppiest use of a cello ever, this song's chorus and jovial tempo are deliciously addictive. The line "When you can't stop making out with all of your friends" is bound to get stuck in your head, and the addition of the cheery usage of cello and trumpet just exemplifies Some By Sea's talent.

Fables (Kentucky Social) - Rachel's voice becomes most prominent in this folky pop song, where her backing vocals harmonizing concurrently with DuBray's is just beautiful. It's a shame her voice didn't surface as much as in this song, because even the small phrases she chants throughout various other add an ethereal quality that, as always, complements their sound.

Darling, Here's the Best Part- At first, the song may seem innocent, morose, and gloomy, but ensuing DuBray's "you send me away"s ,the electric guitar makes a grandiose appearance, soaring in tandem with the cello to create a violent harmony.

Under the Cyclone - A raw, furious extravaganza complete with a hugely catchy chanting-like chorus and a luscious guitar dissonance. The lyrics on this song are also extremely well written.

Only One Bullet - Oh my. A title quite short for any Some By Sea song, but with a time of 12:21, this is obviously the longest and most epic demonstration of Some By Sea's talent. Lacing vocals are relatively short in comparison to the standout instrumental solos, and this song truly shines on all levels. But I will admit, it might be a bit too long...

I'm sorry, I just can't say enough good stuff `bout this album. Some By Sea's evolution from their earlier work is exemplary in this latest opus that'll never leave your cd player. Their sound is too orchestral to be pop, too catchy to be folk, too diverse to be indie - it's all too Some By Sea.

Did you read all that?

5 out of 5 stars No Sophomore Slump.......2006-04-17

I've been a die-hard Some By Sea fan for a few years now. I'm their selp-appointed numero uno actually; sure I don't make it to every show, but a guy's got to work to buy all those CDs and T-Shirts, huh? I skipped school to get this record the minute it came out, actually.

And what a disc this is. Some By Sea is playing rock and roll the way it's supposed to be. This is orchestral pop at its finest; soaring violins, deep cellos, and damn! that's a trumpet in the background! Some By Sea is slowly expanding their horizons, the doe-eyed lonely love songs of their debut album "Get Off the Ground if You're Scared" have given way to upbeat rock 'n roll extravaganzas such as "Look at What I Made Without Your Heart Getting in the Way" and "Under the Cyclone". One of the most standout tracks (and most obvious showcase of Some By Sea's growth) is the 12 minute closer "Only One Bullet", which delivers huge guitar solos by guitar guru David by Sea and one of the best lyrical couplets in the last few years by any band: "When I get back from London/I think I'll write a song about how I've never actually been to London...".

Chris by Sea's vocals on this album are reaching new heights, exploring more aural territory. His lyrics are still tongue-in-cheek, love-stricken, heart-on-sleeve. His writing is completely different than that of pop lyrics today. He writes like they did in the good ole' times of Dylan, Lennon, Bowie, Young... No more Baby, baby, one liners, but full, complete sentences and paragraphs! Perfect prose set to gorgeous music.

Everyone who worked on this album deserves huge rounds of applause. This is a triumphant album, a welcome, shining star in today's counter-culture. Thank you Some By Sea for the music that you have brought to the world. You are single handedly fixing the dying music industry.

I beg anyone who reads this to pick this album up immediately. YOU NEED THIS ALBUM. Some By Sea will change your life. It changed mine.

And if you have the chance, get to a show. Some By Sea is currently on tour around the US. They are lovely people; very kind, very nice. They are happy to talk with any fans about their work. Get their autograph while you're at it too, in a few years Chris, David, Daniel, Rachel, and Tom by Sea will be as big as John, Paul, George, and Ringo.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great cd.......2006-03-15

The fact that this cd is 70+ minutes long as still managers to never become repetitive or 'jammy,' says a lot about the musicianship and creativity of the five members of the band. SBS takes the idea of orchestral pop outside of the cute and/or kitschy (a la Belle and Sebastian) and instead creates a uniquely lush and complicated pop sound, a sound that really doesn't, well, sound like anything else.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Possibly the best album this millenium.......2005-01-07

Lawrence is a true original. This album has some of the funniest, most genuinely eccentric pop you'll ever hear BUT also has some incredibly poignant heartbreaking moments. She Tore It Up And Walked Away distils a whole world of heartbreak into aprox. 1 minute 40 seconds using just 30 or so words and a sad simple melody. Mrs. Back-to-Front And The Bull Ring Thing will confuse you, Hip Op (an unlikely knees up tribute to the Queen Mum) will make you giggle and smile. If you loved Lawrence's band FELT you might hate this but I hope you will love it because I think it is a remarkable and very pure album.

5 out of 5 stars Brave, Brilliant and Bold Bubblegum Pop.......2003-10-24

Lawrence started off as leader of possibly the most iconic and enigmatic English indie band Felt. Go-Kart Mozart is the polar opposite of everything Felt were but I think it is here and not Felt that Lawrence has made his great masterpiece. This is a trully absurd album but there is something very moving here. You get a feeling Lawrence is really opening his heart to you here and not censoring his unique world view. Here is a Song, Plead With The Man and She Tore It Up and Walked Away are melodic treasures.
This album will be written off as joke by some who embrace other popsters still putting on their best totally phoney and forced "I'm a serious artist" stance. Want a real serious artist, one not frightened of using humour in his work? Look no further than Lawrence.

5 out of 5 stars I'm a sailor boy..........2002-03-06

being a fan of Felt and Denim...i picked this cd up. "We're Selfish And Lazy.." is a good song and one of my favs on here. "Here Is A Song" has some good synthesisers. "Sailor Boy" is a song about... jail...but it is a funny song. "City Synthesis" & "Plug-In City" sound the same and they sound like Laurence is beating up a synthesiser. "drinkin um bongo" is only 40 seconds long. "mrs. back to front" is a childrens story told by a chipmunk voice and has Laurence cussing and has a song about The Bull Ring Shopping Center. "hip op" is about a hip surgery on the queen...anyways pick this up if you like Felt,Denim, or just plain weird music. bye.

5 out of 5 stars BRILLIANT!!! Pefect psychotic satiric pop! Lawrence is nutz!.......2000-03-18

Go-Kart Mozart is Lawrence's NEW band sounds ALOT like DENIM.. If you like DENIM, you'll love this!!! Now I love Felt but this is different... MUCH different! But still, It's a perfect and tight album. From the cool electronic instrumentals to the wild and cool and hilarious songs "We're Selfish, Lazy and Greedy", "Hip Op", "Plead With The Man", "Drinkin Um Bongo", and "Sailor Boy".. "Drinking Um Bongo" is only 45 seconds!!!! "Sailor Boy" is about s-o-d-o-m-y in jail! "Hip Op"is NOT about hip-hop.. It's about the Queen mum having a hip operation! "Depleted Soul" is hardcore techno! Lawrence uses many different styles and genres (like Denim) .. From techno, to lounge, to pop, to rock.. There's a whole song devoted to WENDY JAMES, the lead singer to Transvision Vamp... Momus even loves it and speakes very highly of it on his website. This is an EXCELLENT ALBUM!!! All Lawrence fans MUST get it!

1 out of 5 stars A Joke at 30 Minutes.......2000-03-03

Buyer Beware: This 16-track CD clocks in at 30 minutes. Most of the tracks are 45-60 seconds of noise and nonsense. This is the latest CD from "Lawrence." Fans will know that he helmed Felt in the '80s and Denim in the '90s--which are two awesome, underrated bands. I looked forward to this CD and was stopped dead in my tracks by the affront to buyers that it represents. If you've read any UK music mags of late, you'll know that "Lawrence" whinges endlessly about how neglected Felt and Denim were in their day. He's right, particularly with Denim, which somehow missed the whole Britpop boat. So, instead of delivering a show-stopper, he delivers this middle finger to his fans. Rest assured, I've emailed his site in the UK to let him know that his Stateside fan base is dwindling at a rapid rate. Save your money and pick up "Denim on Ice" or Felt's "Absolute Classic Masterpieces." Let "Lawrence" spin around on his Go-Kart by himself.

4 out of 5 stars Stripped down Mice Parade.......2005-02-18

The warmth and immediacy of the lo-fi recordings Adam Pierce and his German female counterpart Doro Tachler are perhaps the strongest points of this Igloo recording. Mice Parade fans will recognize Pierce's contribution to the compositions, as thoughtful percussion, vibes and samba-inflected acoustic guitars appear throughout. One can tell this is a Mice Parade-related disc, however it is very stripped down, and has a feel to it as if it was recorded in someone's shabbily-finished and warm basement late at night in the winter, if that makes any sense. Lots of Pierce's trademark repetitive, evolving sound textures. Also, the packaging for this CD is some of the neatest and most unique I've ever seen. People who are into design might want to buy this disc just for that reason.
